I have been coming to the Bagel Cafe for many years. Not long ago, the business moved to a smaller space on the main street. The prices have always been high, and the eggs have always been microwaved and rubbery. But the combination of the new smaller space, smaller menu, fewer baked goods selection, and more difficult parking has turned me off from this place. Today, the cafe charged me over twelve dollars for one plain bagel with butter and one Udi's gluten free bagel with butter. The staff acknowledged that the Udi's was "quite an upcharge", which is an understatement. A 5-pack of Udi's gf bagels in Shaws (a Maine supermarket) is about $7.50. For $12, I could have bought a pack of Udi's, a stick of butter, and at least one fresh bakery bagel from a grocery store or local baker... and not been asked to tip the counter staff 20% read more

Stopped here for a small snack! Inside is a cute little cafe with decent amount of seating. Very relaxed environment! I ordered the lox bagel and loved it. Vegan be careful! We had breakfast there with our family. There were six of us. Two of us had coffee which we mixed 1/2 Dark Harbor and 1/2 French Roast which we enjoyed with some almond milk. Toasted Rye (was actually pumpernickle) Bagel with hummus, Sprouts, Pickled Red Onion had to be remade because it got cut with a knife that left a cream cheese smear on vegan order Toasted Whole Wheat Italian Seasonings Bagel with Tofutti (R), Tomato, Red Onion, and Sprouts The bagels are smaller and harder than New York bagels. This might be a Maine style thing. They were tasty despite being small. I was hungry so I had two, which I generally don't do. It's a popular and busy place. They ran out of salt bagels before I could order one. The grandchildren split the last one with an order placed at 8:30am. It's definitely a "get there early if you want a wider selection kind of place." I would go back again but would be very careful to make sure they cleaned their knife before cutting the bagel sandwhich to assure I wasn't getting unwanted dairy in my food. Having to have 2 orders remade due to sloppy kitchen practices is not reassuring that they respect their Vegan customers. read more

Oh boy. Finally made it in here, avoiding the summer rush. I adored the old place. Yes, the bagels are really really good ( and I lived a block from H & H Bagels in NY). They're tasty, crunchy, squishy soooo good. So stick to those. Had a hankering for a pastrami sandwich today and thought I'd give it a go. Also got a chicken salad on white bread. What is it about some Maine places, where they put a little schmear on the front of the bread and the back is left completely empty! The pastrami was fat, leathery and I guess old. I chewed on one little piece for ages it was so tough. There was hardly any meat but who needs it when it tastes like that. The chicken salad was a little bitty schmear like a bit of butter. Why so ungenerous??? Geez. Get rid of that patrami! I won't even mention... oh why not, the 30 minute wait when there was hardly anyone in there. It also seems dirty already, the whole place. The inefficiency in this place is staggering. Even with no line, you can expect to wait at least 30 mins for whatever you order, and be told that it will be just 5 minutes. Employees are standing stuck half the time not sure what to do, moving bagels back and forth, answering the phone and just running around. So unbelievably frustrating when i specifically asked before ordering if there are any unexpected delays and was told it should just be a few minutes. This fairly large cafe was pretty busy on a Saturday morning in late September. We ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel and an Italian, both with cream cheese and toasted plus a single coffee, at the counter. Bagel Cafe has soft, delicious bagels, friendly service, and excellent COVID-era standards. I love their customizable egg and cheeses, Dill Bagel with Tofutti, and hummus sandwiches. They also offer amazing coffee! One thing I'd really love to see is more plant-based protein (a veggie sausage for breakfast sandwiches or vegan chick'n tenders for a sandwich). If you don't have half of your bagels and spreads available, why even bother being open? While Maine has reduced restrictions and 90% of dining places have returned to full capacity, I don't understand why there are places like this that remain on full lockdown. I ordered the blueberry bagel which was not available, so I switched to cinnamon raisin, fine. I asked for honey walnut toffuti with it and paid. A few minutes later, I was informed they don't have the spread I ordered. Like what? Why are you even open? Also, they cook egg in a microwave. That is just gross. I wish I asked for a refund, and supported a different breakfast place that is actually open and is helping the small Camden economy than this half open, microwave-cooking place. read more

Well, this place really deserves better than 3 stars, but the assembly line style paying process is incredibly inefficient and really tainted an otherwise great breakfast experience. You order and are supposed to pay when you pick up your food. So there is some dead time while you're hungry and then you want to eat when your food comes and you have to wait in line. I was here the Sunday before Labor Day and it only exacerbated the above problem. The staff are all very friendly and the place is very cute, but the service is pretty slow and I noticed a couple of food safety things that made me a bit nervous. The cashier had gloves on, but didn't change them when receiving cash or making change before touching bagels to set aside for toasting or other things behind the counter. She did use a disposable paper to help grab the bagel, but we all know they don't cover your entire hand when grabbing a bagel or opening a brown paper bag with the same hands you handled money with. I also noticed someone making the bagels grabbed some spices from the "self serve" station to use that are open to the public while making bagel sandwiches behind the counter. Paying $9 for a sandwich only to find a huge portion of sauerkraut on one side of the sandwich. The Reuben sandwich is delicious but I'll never order again. We went twice during our stay in Camden because our Inn offered free breakfast there. They have a limited breakfast sandwich menu. I think bacon was the only meat option. Both visits were in the morning. None of the staff were friendly and no one smiled. The bagel selection was limited as well. If you're used to the bagel selection in most NYC places, or even chains like Panera or Einstein....this place was pretty limited. No "everything bagels" and NO Blueberry!!! This is Maine! How can you have NO blueberry bagels? The bagels we tried were kind of dry, and didn't have the right amount of chewiness to them. We also tried 3 different kinds of muffins. Lemon, Blueberry & cranberry. They didn't taste fresh either. The insides were moist & tasted pretty good. However, the outside was hard, dry and tasted stale.
