    Bagel with.....?

Could they spare the butter? Or did they run out? Must have been low on cream cheese too. I have lived 2 minutes from this spot for 15 years and it has been, eh, decent enough but last few trips had me wishing I took the time to go to Utopia Bagels instead. Like NO butter on a bagel with butter and barely enough any cream cheese on my kid's bagel either - $6.00 (!) for 2 bagels (didn't ask for "light" and they didn't even have toast them) & I had to put stuff on at home myself. It takes A LOT to make me write a review for anything but at these prices, the slow and cruddy service and horrible product had to speak up - DO BETTER!

I stopped in to get some NY bagels before hopping on the road back to FL. I have not had bagels from here for close to 20 years! I used to hang out in Bayside all the time but as I became older, I was nit in the area so much. There is a better place in the area, that is closer to my parents', that I have been going to all this time instead. This lag time I visited, I was in the plaza to ship something and was headed back to FL right after. I was home for almost 2 months and did not have the chance to order bagels to bring back to FL so Bagel Club was the stop this time. I went on a weekday afternoon and it was dead. Upon walking in, I noticed the refrigerators filled with drinks and bagel toppings. Some which made me smile because I realized they were only sold in NYC and made more sad I had to go back to FL. I was greeted and offered help but not right away or without distractions. There were three kids behind the counter. I ordered a dozen bagels to go, which were a mix of everything, cinnamon raisin, and sesame. I also ordered an everything bagel toasted with lite cream cheese to eat with my slice of pizza before we hopped on the road. It took longer than I expected but not horrible. Holy crap the prices were high here! The bagel was good, but not as good as my usual spot. Still way better than any shit they call NY bagels in FL of course!

The young man taking the order got everything I ordered correct on the first try, the food is great and the service is fast. Great place to order out or sit down for breakfast, gives me an old school feel, where all client are familiar with the employees. Great service.

This is a horrible $8.70 overpriced 2 pieces of bacon with 2 cold slices of American cheese on a stale roll.

This was probably my WORST breakfast experience in my entire life as a New Yorker. I asked how much a bacon egg n cheese was n they told me $8.70, which I think is ridiculous because standout places like Pardon My Sub charge $6.50 or Dom's Deli in New Hyde Park charge $5.95 (and both places give a packed sandwich that is very filling and can even be shared by 2 people). I ordered simply bacon and cheese on a roll. They not only still charged an absurd price of $8.70 but it was simply 2 small pieces of bacon, 2 very cold, unmelted slices of American cheese on a stale roll. HORRIBLE FOOD. HORRIBLE PRICES. HORRIBLE SERVICE. I wish I would have checked before I left because I NEVER would have paid nearly $9 for the garbage they served. On top of it the man that packed it does not know how to wrap a sandwich in the paper because when I reached to take it out of the bag it unraveled and half the "sandwich" fell out.

The promise of that sandwich was delivered in the chicken cutlet with vodka sauce & mozzarella and layered with salty, meaty prosciutto. Mmm-Mm, what a great sandwich. As tasty as the sandwich was, it is on the pricey side, so I'm not going to be doing an $18 sandwich every day of the week, even though one hero could feed 2 people. I know I'll be back soon enough, though.

( https://www.instagram.com/p/DQF8Gzekcks/ ). It is a shame because, besides myself, I know a few people that aren't in the neighborhood that travel regularly to G&L. Also its surprising because every time I go the place is pretty packed and occasionally there is a wait. What's also a shame, for me, is that on my recent visit my friend ordered the Steamed Seafood in Lemongrass and this is perhaps the top, or one of the top dishes on the menu. The seafood flavors and balances the slightly spicy lemongrass broth making this a crave worthy bowl. I ordered something out of my wheelhouse - the Coconut Spicy Lemongrass Soup, which on online order menu states its a popular dish. I couldn't see why this dish is so popular because I find other items on the menu superior. They make a tasty pho (especially when paired with a marrow bone). Their sandwiches are well made - I enjoy the different fish ones. I think their Vietnamese coffee could use some work - it is blander than other versions I had tried. Don't be too sad and maybe feel a little optimistic because owner Petra Rickman has a great track record opening interesting, in demand restaurants (This one and Taco Azul have been longtime go-tos in Whitestone). Additionally G&L has a 2nd location with the same menu in Manhattan, which unfortunately for a Queens boy like myself is a bridge too far and a congestion pricing too high for me to make the trek.

The menu has very detailed, almost elevated descriptions that make everything sound spectacular, but in practice the flavors don't quite come through, especially the sauces, which are barely noticeable. Our server was flexible when we asked to swap the potato chips for fries on the kids' grilled cheese meal, which we appreciated. However, we were then charged $1.40 for a side of ranch for the fries. I understand they have a range of specialty sauces and dips that are clearly priced on the menu, but that still felt steep for ranch. They also offer a combo option to add fries for $5, but the portion doesn't really feel aligned with the price. The steak sandwich itself was surprisingly tender, even though it looked like it might be tough. That said, I couldn't taste the roasted red pepper sauce, and the "sweet onion jam" turned out to just be caramelized onions. My mother actually ended up picking them out because she doesn't eat onions. (she won't eat onions that she can see) The buffalo cauliflower was tasty, but could have been crispier. The "serves two" description also felt a bit generous given the small portion. I also ordered a brisket sandwich to go with fries. The coleslaw sounded great on the menu, but in reality the flavors didn't stand out, no real hint of jalapeño, just a fairly standard slaw. Overall, the food descriptions felt more impressive than the actual execution, though the to-go fries portion was more generous, which was a nice surprise. Would I go back? I'm not sure. Maybe for a casual visit with a few beers and fries with an assortment of dipping sauces...I am a sucker for those.
