Spent $15 on 2 breakfast sandwiches and when we asked the woman who rang us up how that could be she went through this whole big display to show us how our breakfast really should have cost $17and that she was actually helping us. This bagel joint is one of the better one I've been to and I looove mah bagels! The biggest thing that sets this bagel shop apart from other bagel slingers in town is that Fratelli's BAKES their bagels instead of boiling them. If you never knew that bagels could be made differently well now you know! Boiled bagels are usually smaller, very tough on the outside and the inside isn't very fluffy. That ain't the case here though! You get big big pumped up bagels that looks like they're gonna fly away! Very good! Around the corner from the counter is a nice seating area with about 10 tables. Outdoor seating when the weather is nice also! Now you might laugh at me for pointing this out but it something you don't think about until your already sitting down. They place napkins, salt & pepper and ketchup on the table! Score!! They offer a self serve coffee area and a self serve soup area as well. The two stars I docked: They don't take cards. It's kind of REALLY annoying and they don't have an ATM either! What the heck? I know lots of delis and bagel stores usually stick to just cash but they always at least have an ATM. The food can get a little pricey. I just get a buttered bagel and a drink and it's usually around $3-$4. My friend gets an egg sandwich with the works and a drink and it's usually upwards of $10 - $12. That's kind of a big deal! This morning I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and stood there for a half an hour while people before me got called with large orders. Several people pointed out to the employees that I had been waiting a very long time, no one said anything and ignored them. I tried talking to them a couple of times, shouting after a while but still being ignored. No one did anything or asked me what I was waiting on. I was going to be late for work but they finally asked me what I was waiting on after several attempts to talk to them from me and strangers over the course of that half hour. Finally they made my bagel, no apology no discount or anything. If I were running the place I wouldn't have charged for the bagel, but hospitality is dead. At least an apology, jeeze. This morning (on a busy bagel store Sunday), my daughter reminded me that we were hosting her team's pregame lunch!!! What? 28 starving girls were due to arrive in 2 hours?!!! I knew no one else to call but David at Bagels Express! Despite having a line out the door, he and his staff put together my order of bagels, sandwiches and assorted spreads. He also sliced my bagels, arranged everything in beautiful Easter themed wraps on trays! It tasted fantastic as usual also! My family has been coming to this bagel shop for years, so I was really surprised to read some of the "meh" reviews written here. I LOVE the bagels here. When I lived in Boston, I had my mom bring up 2 dozen from this shop every time she visited. I stored the bagels in my freezer so I could enjoy them as long as possible. Whether my roommates were annoyed that I took up all the freezer space or not, I didn't care haha. My little sister now does the same because she lives in Chicago, so yes, my family LOVES the bagels here. They are so big and fluffy - if you get a good batch that just came out of the oven, you can forego adding cream cheese. The bagel itself should satisfy the bagel-shaped hole in your stomach. I've never had an issue with service here like other people have mentioned, but I do agree that the coffee here is lacking. Lastly, order a dozen bagels, you get one for free. AMAZING Bagels, sandwiches, wraps, coffee, potato salad and service! Though Bagel Express is kinda out of the way from my apartment I do LOVE what they do here! They close early, I think 3 pm daily so get there for breakfast or lunch. Friendly, personable staff who clearly know their regulars. I've have a variety of sandwiches here and haven't had any bad experiences. They give you a reward card that they mark off for every breakfast or lunch sandwich you buy and you get a free sandwich when it's filled. I have three different ones because I kept forgetting them and the guy pleasantly offered to consolidate them for me the next time I come in. I will definitely come back here and recommend this to anyone who likes bagels. read more

Came here recently and left unsatisfied. I asked for a toasted cream cheese bagel to go and two chocolate chip bagels. Given that I was the only person in the store (it was 2pm on a Saturday), I expected the order to be processed quickly. I should've known something was wrong however, when they handed me my bag less than a minute later. Unless they toast bagels over an open pit of fire, there is simply no way to achieve that type of speed. My instincts were right. Upon opening the bag in my car moments later, I found that, not only was my bagel untoasted, but the two chocolate chips were actually blueberries. At that point I was late for an appointment and didn't want to deal with waiting any longer. I went in and swapped the blueberries for chocolate chips and went on my way. Make no mistake... the bagels are amazing--there is no disputing that. If you simply want the best bagels in the area, this is still the place to go. The bacon egg and cheese sandwich comes with a juice or coffee yet the owners son continually fails to offer it. The bald dude who is a server needs to learn some basic customer service- he is very rude. The eggs are often over cooked, bacon not fresh, and usually can't tell the cheese was put on because it melted. I have not visited this establishment for two years, vowing never to come here after several negative experiences. However, I have needed a breakfast along the way to work and I decided to give them another chance. In terms of service, it was extremely quick but could still work on being less grumpy. Previous visits used to be negative due to rudeness, so this was giving flashbacks. In terms of quality, the food is good. I had a cinnamon raison bagel with cream cheese here one day and a turkey egg and cheese on a sunflower bagel the next day. I still don't get a friendly vibe from this place, so I wouldn't consider this my go-to place. I was a huge fan of One if Buy Bagel. When I found out it was being reopened by Fratelli's I was excited. I'm a big fan of Fratelli's in Stony Brook but their weak point has always been breakfast. Well unfortunately they have brought the same sub-par egg sandwiches and coffee to the One if Buy Bagel location. On the upside the bagels have not changed. I always loved One if Buy Bagels; not because they are traditional Jewish bagels (which they're not), but because they are huge, fluffy, and make the perfect vehicle for 2 eggs, bacon, cheese, and SPKHS (Salt, Pepper, Ketchup, Hot Sauce). Unfortunately my Fratelli's egg sandwiches have been weak compared to other local delis which may have set the bar fairly high. On top of my eggs I expect a handful of bacon with an ample pile of melted cheese acting like meat glue. At Fratelli's I get two meager bacon slices and a single slice of American. The price is also fairly expensive, but very close to Strathmore up the street. Last I was there we ordered a toasted bagel with cream cheese, buttered bagel, large coffee and Snapple and it came out to ~$10, should have been more like $7. 2 egg sandwiches and 2 Snapple's will cost about $13-$14 which is IMO too expensive. There seems to be a common problem these days of establishments charging lunch prices for breakfast. The staff at Fratelli's is nice and friendly, so I always give them the benefit of the doubt but leave somewhat unsatisfied. I will return for lunch but will pass on breakfast. read more

Now, I don't have much else to compare against; no history with the location or other spots bearing the name ... so as a stand-alone location, I was pleased. You will never be treated more poorly as a customer anywhere else. If there was an award for the worst customer service this place would take the gold by far. I've been here several times out of convenience and every single time without fail the man at the register talks to me like I'm stupid, he is incredibly rude and unprofessional. He has to be the most miserable a-hole I have ever met. He may be the owner which says even more for the business. To make matters even worse I got a tub of plain cream cheese from there that had MOLD on the top, owner did not care. The prices are HIGH and the quality is subpar, for those prices I better have decent customer service at the least. Not only that but the prices are inconsistent (never in the favor of the customer) if I'm paying $1.50 for a plain bagel with nothing on it one day, give it a week and it'll be $1.75 which seems like a small difference but most bagel places charge $1 most for a single bagel. There are no deals if you get a dozen or a half dozen and the bagels do not taste fresh. I worked at a bagel store for years and despite how I felt about being there, not once was I snappy or rude with a customer and I didn't even own the place. About a year ago I walked in and I was polite but quiet, not exactly happy given i just found out my grandma died. Rather than just being left alone the man at the counter proceeded to say in a snarky tone "Smile, you're young your life's not that bad." Mind you this man has no clue who I am or my life, and that my grandma literally just died. I went in again recently with family and the woman at the counter yelled at us as she was taking our orders... because we weren't speaking fast enough. Whenever I go here I feel like I'm in the Seinfeld episode "The Soup Nazi." These people obviously don't care about how they treat their customers. I have continued to go to this place every once in a while because of it's close proximity to the university. Last time I was in there the guy at the register was rude and accused me of stealing, and I will never step foot in that place again. It's also still the same overpriced sub-par bagels with sub-par coffee. I was standing at the register and my total was something like $2.18. I put 2 dollars on the counter and said, "Let me see if I have the change." While I was doing this he swept up my $2 and was talking to another customer while doing something in the drawer. I ended up not having the change so I put another dollar down on the counter and said, "Sorry, I actually don't have the change." He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "This is $1. Your total is $2.18." I told him I just gave him $2 and this was the third dollar because I didn't have the change. He proceeded to tell me that no, I did not give him two dollars and challenged me to look in my wallet and see how many ones I had to see if I really did take out three. The line was obviously stopped at this point while this guy is making a scene, which was extremely embarrassing. I looked around to see if someone could vouch for me, but of course nobody was paying attention to what had happened. Anyway, I didn't have any more ones because I had given them all to him, and I explained very politely that I had already paid. A few more comments were exchanged, and finally he said very rudely, "Alright ma'am, whatever you say," took my third dollar, and slammed the drawer shut and walked away. First of all, this guy is making a huge deal over TWO DOLLARS. I think he swept up my $2 thinking it was from a previous order because the place was pretty busy or maybe he just didn't remember because things were moving so quickly. Anyone who has worked at a register or in customer service knows that if there is a misunderstanding with possible fault of the employee that the employee should give the customer the benefit of the doubt. Again, we are talking about TWO DOLLARS. What terrible service. Secondly, that place has freaking 25 cameras and I wish so badly I challenged him to go back and take a look at the tape to see that he was wrong. I hope he eventually did. You live in NY you have millions of bagel places to choose from, some about a 1/2 mile from this place. The bagel recipe is not on point with bagels locally. You want a softer, airy, yet chewy Bagel with a little crunch on the exterior. These bagels are like dense loaves of bread that have something missing and i cannot put my finger on it exactly whats wrong. They are HUGE, but not good. Everyone else around this place makes better tasting bagels, and they all seem to have the same recipe, but for whatever reason this place didn't get the recipe, and started making Dunkin Donut style bagels, which remind me of Thomas' Bagels you can get at the grocery. I do love the owner who is a genuine, good decent human being, always polite and attentive as is his staff. Coffee is good too. Just fix the monster bagels, they can be just as big and taste good. maybe its lack of salt in the recipe? whatever it is they are not NY Bagels read more
