Lose your ATTITUDE, dude! This place is a block and half from my apartment, and some foodies were telling me about it, so I had to try it. I had breakfast there twice in the first two weeks they opened, and I liked it. The miller was gracious, and the food was fine. The oatmeal was very good, but I have to say that by the second time I ordered it, I got tired of the really gluey texture and fatty taste. The bread was tasty the first time too, but then I took a loaf home and over time, it tasted too heavy and like German bread for me, Having been born and raised in France and used to lighter bread, it was not going to become my daily bread, even though I liked the idea that the bread had fresh ingredients, and thought the idea of milling your own was CUTE (although this used to be quite common). The fourth time I went, I got a delicious pumpkin pie. I have to say it was the best pumpkin pie I have ever had. However, here is where BM falls on its face... First, I ordered a pie, and the cashier gives me a slice. Okay, no problem. Then I am given a pie in a box that is about to fall open. So, I kindly ask the person who put it in the box if they could wrap the box with twine. She asks me three questions along the lines, of why do I need twine, can't I carry the box by putting my hand under the box for support, and am I giving it to someone as a present...? (So, something as simple as giving a customer a properly boxed pie becomes an inquisition!) So, she puts the twine on, but loosely, totally defeating the purpose of twine. So, I ask her if she can put it on a bit tighter, and she says something to me. So, I say, frankly, I'm surprised that this is a bakery and you don't know how to put twine around a box. So, the "baker" owner takes to re-wrapping the twine around the box, and I am given a box smothered in some baking stuff. Since, by now I've waited 15 minutes for this snafu, I walk away muttering something under my breath to myself (like, "Incroyable!".) So, I have my receipt sent to my email, and when I get it I see that it asks for feedback, which I give.... To my surprise I get a response from the "miller" owner accusing me of having been rude to his wife and employee, telling me that I need to be more patient in the future. First and foremost, I'd say, BM needs to work on its customer service, and to learn that the customer is always right. It's nice to play "baker and miller," and try to pass off something that was quite common (baking pies using fresh wholesome ingredients) as a novelty, but please learn how to treat your customers with respect, and get off of your high horse. Bakers have been wrapping boxes with twine for decades for a reason. Maybe you'll learn once too many customers have dropped their pies on Western Avenue. PS: BM's cinnamon rolls are grainy and quite a disappointment - if you're in the neighborhood, please visit Cafe Selmarie which has some of the best pies and cakes that are commonly found in American bakeries, and where you won't get attitude. read more

I cannot understand how this place was a James Beard finalist... I ordered takeout with them through caviar, so maybe the experience is different in house but honestly your care of your customers food should translate whether it's take out or in house dining. I ordered biscuits and gravy, a grits bowl, and a hand pie. My order came sans hand pie, and a shitty/flimsy cardboard container that was soggy and exploded everywhere in the bag. The biscuits which were supposed to be two, were actually one torn in half, and they were tossed in with gravy, all soggy. With my grits, they had broken my eggs and tried to hide it by putting all the other ingredients on top. It's too bad because the flavored were great but it was such a mess I could barely stomach any of it. I had read great reviews on this place so I did stop when I was in the city. I was very disappointed. I got a loaf of the danish seeded bread and it was raw in the middle. I had lived in Europe several years so I was looking forward to a dense European bread. This was wet and raw inside--beyond wet--it was uncooked dough. It was awful, not to mention tasteless. I also got a sourdough baguette which was not sour and while the shape of a baguette it was very dense--not a French baguette at all. So two misses on the bread. I am not sure where the pictures on the site were taken but the baked goods I saw in the shop were pretty pitiful and not even remotely appetizing in appearance-- I think the place needs some attention--a good cleaning and General sprucing up of how they display the baked goods--and cook the bread long enough to make sure it is not raw-- it was very unappetizing and I had to throw it out sad to say. read more

I had high hopes for this place after seeing a few friends check in and Instagram their food. But I was just...disappointed. I ordered off the menu and paid and sat down, then I was called to the counter and told that what I ordered wasn't actually on the menu...okaaaay, then what did I just read/order/pay for? So, they told me they could make something similar (a salad). So they did...but they served a salad on a plate, and it was so sparse, like 4 leaves and a few pieces of vegetables, and I was under the impression that it came with a side of pie, it did not. The hell did I just pay $7+ dollars for? Also had their fresh squeezed OJ and it was meh. How do you screw up OJ? I'm sure I ordered wrong and should have stuck with the bakery items. But with so many bakeries in the area that have been around for decades, I spared myself the disappointment and $$ and moved on. read more

Food is delicious, albeit pricey. Breakfast for one: Ploughmans Plate with soft egg, bread, mixed greens, sausage patty and iced coffee should not cost $17, however yummy it is. Homemade jams and butters are a homey touch, along with the toasters on the tables. Now, the really bad part: rude, rude service! Customers are not greeted at the door. The cashier at the counter greeted us with an abrupt, "I'm not ready for you yet' and a few minutes later a curt "Yes!?" Additionally, I did not see one staff member utter a single pleasantry. Tables were piled with dirty dishes. Someone burnt something in the kitchen and no one made an effort to apologize for the billowing smoke or smell. I really hope the owner takes notice of this, because really good food is easy to ignore when you don't feel welcome. read more

first of all, i've been coming here for ages. i feel as though the millers have given up on their business. they leave the restaurant's livelihood up to just about anybody that they can hire. i have spoken with numerous employees at the shop - you know, just regular chitchat - and it never seems as though any of them are particularly happy with their jobs. i rarely see the millers in shop and they clearly do not care about the quality of their products any longer. the "hot" food is served consistently quite the opposite (ice cold). i have always wanted to like the place - they have often played great music, and it's pseudo-cozy on the patio...but at any given point of my experiences with this restaurant - -have had a lox plate that tasted rancid. -stepped in 10 minutes after they opened to learn that they only had coffee to sell. -and i have even been stung by a bee on the patio (which i understand is not necessarily their fault, but does add a little insult to injury). but seriously, if you sit outside, you WILL see the bees. -been given one tiny (cold) biscuit in a dish called "biscuitS and gravy" in lukewarm gravy. -had one of their housemate butters that was clearly spoiled. the only good thing is the chocolate caramel cookie. that's why i kept coming back. but they don't make that anymore, last time i checked. you can go if you want, but i'd strongly advise against it. read more

This little shop is fan-flippin-tastic! The people are so friendly and the food is great! The prices here are a little on the high side but the offerings are of such high quality, I really feel that it's worth the money. I think we obsess over prices a little too much. If you want quality, be prepared to pay for it. If you don't like it, there's a BK on Lawrence that you might prefer. They are milling their own flour, rolling their own oats, probably squeezing the juice and it totally shows in the end product. The oatmeal is just killer! I don't like oatmeal at most places but I was curious to try Baker Millers because they were rolling their own oats. It's got great texture and the dollop of cream, jam and pool of milk come together so perfectly. I don't know if it's the best oatmeal around but it's gotta be up there. The coffee was great too (2 Sparrow iirc) so don't skip it! The neighborhood has really embraced this little shop and the energy in the shop is buzzin' with positive vibes. Come early to snag a seat or be prepared to wait for a table, stand at the window counter or sit with strangers. Sitting with strangers might not be such a bad idea, you can steal some of their food and I bet it'll be delicious. read more

So I was really anxious to order the grits/they have had great reviews so I had to try them. I understand that this is a new restaurant so I am willing to cut them some slack, BUT. I was there at 11am ish and there were a couple of people there for coffee, etc. I ordered the grits. After quite awhile I got the dish--in fact the cook/owner? apologized that it took too long, thanked me for my patience and said he gave me a little more. The problem, IT WAS NOT HOT, NOT EVEN WARM. Then, the tomatoes appeared to be canned stewed tomatoes-and they must have come right from the refrigerator because they were COLD. The greens/kale? were nothing to write home about. My opinion, they have a ways to go before I will go back but I wish them luck. I am always routing for the independent.....Also, a lady--probably an owner with a bandana around her head was very nonchalant--to me, if I were an owner I would show some acknowledgement towards your customers--NOTHING. Maybe they have let their success at Bang Bang has gone to their head??? read more

I used to love that place and my husband and I used to come almost every week end for breakfast/brunch. They used to serve a great sausage (ploughman's bf) and great oatmeal. I am not against changes when it's for the better but I have to say I don't understand the changes they have made the past year. The butter and jam bar is gone and so are the toasters, less choice of baked goods and breads and above all what disappoints me is the change in quality of the food. Use to be simple but good products. Now I keep trying and trying again hoping I just went there in a bad day but everything I tasted disappointed me. Too salty, too bland, too cooked... I really don't understand the "sample" dishes by the counter. It's not attractive and it makes the place look cheap. I was excited when they announced thematic they are revamping and teaming up with more people to add new additions to the menu but really I don't get it. I was happy to have a place like BM in my neighbourhood but I unfortunately stopped going a while ago. Please stop displaying food at the counter in cheap cartoon boxes and bring back the old "farm to table" feeling. Simpler is better. read more

Tried a cinnamon roll which was fantastic, and bought a whole apple cranberry pie. The pie had an extremely off flavor and was inedible. I still cannot decide what the flavor was, but it was seriously awful. Considering the high price for the pie, we were really looking forward to it. In the end, no one touched it. We love this place. Everything we've had there is delicious, and all other restaurant versions we've tried pale in comparison. The biscuits and gravy are delicious. No I'm not joking, like died and gone to heaven. The oatmeal is a staple that is fantastic every time we order it, and I love the grits. Baker Miller is a game changer, making it seem like bakeries that don't grind their own grains aren't really contenders. I've haven't yet had the chance to eat the entire menu yet (give me time--it's brief so totally within the realm of possibility) but the items I've tried are completely off the charts, well made and distinguished by the textural integrity and superior flavor that stone-ground grains/flours bring to the party. Normally I can pass on cinnamon rolls (Cinnabon? Nah!) but the buzz about these has been pretty insistent that they set the new standard--and they absolutely do. The little crunchy nubbins of grain somehow make it seem that a cinnamon roll, if not exactly virtuous, at least is not a puffy, processed waste of stomach space. These things are seriously delicious, especially in the early morning hours when they are still warm. The savory hand pies--hold on awesome! It seems like they switch up the ingredients. I had local sausage and Cheddar cheese, great foils to the natural sweetness of the blissful whole grain pastry. Goodly amounts of course salt and pepper on top are simply perfect. For take home, I bought a container of stone-ground grits, a beautiful mix of three different types of corn, including dent and flint varieties. Get out the way Quaker grits--there's no room for so-so when Baker Miller is an option. Flat-out fabulous, a major leap forward in terms of quality. The owners used to own Bang Bang Pie and this is the next step in their evolution toward ongoing excellence. The integrity they bring to grain-based foods has no equal in Chicago. This is a unique story. Me and a few friends ate Thai in the area on Saturday night and decided to hang out on a bench right outside Baker. It was about 8pm and it was closed, but the owner had just gotten there and was in the process of moving to their new location. Partially joking, I asked if he had any pastries stashed away. Low and behold, rather than laugh it off, the owner asked if we would like a cinnamon roll. I jumped at the chance. So we thought we would get a sample on a toothpick, but no, he brought out a full humongous cinnamon roll in a plastic container. It was huge. He then actually went back in and got us napkins! We offered to pay, but he said no. He talked to us and was just down to Earth. I'm sure he had so many other things to do. The cinnamon roll was dense and delish! In an age where there is so much competition, but seems like so little customer service, the owner's actions and kindness were truly a fresh of breath air! So, amazing customer service when there was no need for it and excellent quality! Thank you so very much! I wish you the best at your new location and DO plan to visit. read more

If you're looking for bland this is not your place. They say Sweet and Savory right on their logo coffee mugs. Had very tasty savory grits with home made chicken sausage. Not sure but I think I heard chickens in the back laying the eggs. Everything is fresh. The carrot cake muffin was just the right amount of natural sweetness, expected the cream cheese icing but that would have made this otherwise vegan dish something else. Baker Miller is very German in terms of ingredients and food choices. You never know what is going to be at the bakery that day, which is sometimes a good thing, but not here. The deserts, atmosphere, and overall food just isn't memorable. You can do better in Chicago, not worth a special trip. read more

Went for a weekday lunch. A friend had recommended it and we thought his enthusiastic review a bit over the top. BOY, WERE WE WRONG. After today's lunch, add me to the WILDLY enthusiastic supporters. The décor could best be described as vintage eccentric, which gives it a warm buzz and lived-in feel. And the food, wow, really blew us away. My friend had the breakfast biscuit and I had the ploughman's platter. What impressed us so was the attention to detail and quality of EVERY single item on the plates. The bread and biscuits that taste like grand ma's, a heavenly bacon, buttery greens in a very light dressing, sausages that tasted right from the farm etc. etc. This is how nature intended for food to taste! WELL DONE!!! Then there are the jams and butters. Each a triumph in themselves. Baker Miller catered our July wedding in Logan Square, and they did an outstanding job. We were going for a Southern style menu, and Dave and Megan delivered in magnificent style. We had a buffet including grits, four styles of pork, biscuits with honey butter, a corn and tomato salad, a greens salad with strawberries, as well as amazing chocolate chip cookies and peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Many of our guests provided feedback that it was the best wedding meal they had ever had. Thank you very much, Dave and Megan. What a great little place! Do not expect fancy, and the seating is a bit strange. However...you will get wonderful, fresh & healthy foot that is SO good. My son & I went because they make the bread themselves. They mill thr grain, make the bakery goods, the jams, jellies & butters. The servings are good sized & filling. And, there is a toaster on every table! Seriously! You roast your own. I got the baked oatmeal & toast bar. He got the biscuit & gravy with candied bacon & a blueberry ll was delicious! He also got coffee & I got a very large cup of mint tea. I had pumpkin butter, plum Jim, bluegetty jam " strawberry jam. All freshly made. Not too sweet, either. I have heard such good things about this restaurant but I was so disappointed in my experience. We arrived on a Sunday around 8:30am with a party of 5. I ordered the oatmeal and they were out. I am not sure how they were out of oatmeal when they just had opened. I also ordered a latte. Our order came out and no latte. Why? because they don't serve lattes, which is fine but then tell me that when I order. The service was bad. The lady that took our order was just there. Didn't apologize for being out of oatmeal, didn't try to recommend another dish, didn't tell us that they don't serve lattes. We sat outside and had to bring the highchair out back. Which again, not a big deal but the highchair had strawberry jam all over it and it got all over our nice friend's (who carried the high chair) white pants! I ordered yogurt that was just a container of yogurt from the store. The freshly squeezed orange juice is just orange juice from Marianos (we saw the bottles as we were leaving). came here with a friend for some coffee and pie. i walked in, and went through their farm-to-table menu. i ended up getting a poached egg on grits with greens and sausage. i appreciated the presentation, but the taste wasn't there for me. even the ambiance felt off. i loved the fact that it's near lincoln square and that i wouldn't have to drive out to wicker or chicago ave for good pie, because their pie was delicious. but if not for pie, i think i'll still choose other spots that offer that cozy feel that i love. read more
