Bagel Tyme is a Merced essential. The Merced food scene is an interesting one. There are a few places in this town that businesses in bigger cities like San Francisco can't hold a candle to. Bagel Tyme is one of these. There just aren't bagels out there that are better than bagel tyme outside of New York City. I have eaten a lot of bagels in a lot of cities and Bagel Tyme remains my favorite. The pesto bagel with one of their flavored cream cheeses is the best, and they've got great coffee as well. Bageltyme. With a "y." So fresh and edgy! Normally the word "time" is spelled with an "i!" Generally I only venture to Bageltyme when I wake up before noon, since they close at 2, which is tragic. As someone that works from home, this doesn't really help me contribute to BTy's success. I would like to purchase more bagels, since I am the sort that eats bagels, but then I can't because they're closed by the time I'm craving them. Also, they tend to run out of various types of bagels often, most notably some cynnamon [sic] one. This doesn't affect me since I'm a playn [sic] and poppy seed kinda guy, but styll [sic], it makes it hard to come here with others that prefer that type of bagel. I find this strange because there's no advantage to cooking fewer of the bagels that you need, unless you're trying to create a buzz or a sense of urgency, but then it's not like you're selling those bagels for more money than other bagels to compensate for the losses. Strange. Otherwise, though, the bagels are tasty, and they employ many young women of an age where old people will happily frequent the establishment to spend more time with said young women, which can only be good for business. I've been to Bagel Tyme this week twice. The first time I went I was a surprised that the girl who helped me didn't use gloves and handled my food and money without washing her hands in between. Since I paid over $7 for my sandwich I chose to eat it and hoped employees wash hands after using the restroom at least. The second time I went it was a different girl who helped me and she bagged half a dozen bagels for me with her bare hands then used the register. I looked around for a rating and it was conspicuously missing. The bagels were okay and I would leave 3 stars for them but the unsanitary way food is handled here disgusts me and I'm leaving 1 star. Both times I've been to the store I've had two different servers and neither one of them wore gloves or washed hands. It's gross. read more

Finance and I came here for brunch. I ordered the club sandwich over the phone and we sat down to eat while we waited for our smoothies. Halfway through my bagel I realized there was no bacon. When I asked I was told they ran out. That was it. Would've been nice if we were told before paying. The smoothie and bagel were decent. I came here with a friend for a quick breakfast. And I was shocked that the price for a bagel was so expensive and to even add some cream cheese was a whole extra dollar. Yes I enjoyed the bagels. That's pretty much it. All the while I thought to myself, " Why couldn't I have made this on my own?" For so much cheaper I would've gone to Raley's and toasted my own bagels and chose my own cream. Yes this a good place to bring your friends to chill and pass the time, but that's about it. Great bagels, BUT they always run out of the cranberry ones when I get there, probably because I wake up late, so be there early! I love their bagels, but the cream cheese is my main incentive for coming here, and trust me, I am a very picky cream cheese eater. Every time I go it's clear that it's fresh and it tastes absolutely splendid. Plus they have small containers so that I can buy multiple flavors and they won't go bad so quickly. Bagel Tyme has always been my go to spot when I feel like having a cinnamon sugar bagel with strawberry cream cheese or breakfast bagels in general and even their coffee. However, I always thought there would be hope for every next visit and that is the service. There could be multiple occasions where there are hardly any people and it takes very long for a bagel. There could be bagels already made, in the basket and such but for some reason the wait is longer than necessary and it's ridiculous. It always depends on who's in the front but there are times where I go and they're pretty nice but there some where they're just rude. That's my only flaw but nonetheless their bagels never fail to hit the spot. Hope they can change their service. Edit : Another thing is I always have trouble when trying to call in ahead of time. I've been going to this place for the past year, and my roommates and I absolutely love it. It has a really small, cafe like setting with friendly service, and a small coffee bar. My favorite bagels are between the pesto and loaded baked potato with sundried tomato cream cheese, delish! Their drinks are also really good too, I frequently enjoy a carmelatto. Be sure to get there early, because sometimes their bagels sell out before closing. New to Merced and this is one of the first places I tried with a friend that helped me move. GREAT place for bagels with some cream cheese and their house coffee and I will definitely be back for just that only. Did try the breakfast sandwich and honestly was shocked and let down by how poor it was. I think I expected it to be more home cooked since it's a small shop. When I make breakfast sandwiches at home they are warm, melted cheese, fresh eggs, all the goodness. My bagel was toasted separately and that's about it for the "warmness". It was made with a frozen egg patty(microwaved I think), cold ham and a sliced piece of cheese just out of the package. I had two bites and was over it. Spent almost $5 for it too :( I think that's what made me the unhappiest. Def Wouldn't go for any of the sandwiches, just the bagels. read more

I've been coming here for years and absolutely love it. It's locally owned which is a plus. It's very clean and always decorated to fit the season/holiday. Even the aprons they wear match the occasion. So cute! The environment is relaxed with indoor & outdoor seating. Service is impeccable and wait time is reasonable, even when they are super busy. what ever happened to the bagel shop? I thought this a while back. I used to love the big corporate one, and the little corner ones. Well, going to this place makes me ask again. Simple bagel and coffee for just a few bucks, some desserty pastries, some juices... but the types of bagels are plenty! bialy, salt, cinnamon, garlic, egg... oh and there is a variety of cream cheeses to choose from too. You can get real extravagant, like I did, and get a bagel with lox, onion, capers, cream cheese, and tomatoes for about 7 bucks. At the high end the place is still highly affordable. Bageltyme is a local business that has been around for about 20 years and must have a steady clientelle because it is nestled away in a pocket of a very busy Merced intersection (near MHS) yet you don't see it and forget it. I know. I frequent it about every 4 years. This time around, I know I will be frequenting it more frequently. It is a simple shop with comfortable feel, and simple food for a nice price. The only drawbacks are not alot of seating and they only take cash. Fine, teach me to be more economical with my finances while providing me great food. I like it. In the last 10 years or so, if you ever said to your self "Self, I miss the bagel shop!" then you should go to Bageltyme. If you just like simple selection that will satisfy, go to Bageltyme. Bagel Tyme knows what they are doing when it comes to bagels. Everything we ordered was fresh, from the bagels, to the shmears to the fruits and veggies as toppings. I was in a sweet mood, and ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with honey butter and bananas, showing that you don't have to stick to the menu when it comes to customized orders. The space inside was small, and pretty packed on a Friday morning, so it could be a little difficulty to use this place as a work space. I really wanted to give Bagel Tyme more then two stars. Maybe today was an off day because I have in the past had really great Bagels from them. Today however was not the case. I ordered two chicken salad bagels, the bagels were both plain. The order was to go. The service was friendly and the wait wasn't too long. But, the bagels when we got then home to eat were so hard that I had to cut mine with a steak knife. Seriously. The chicken salad was skimpy. Pretty disappointing. I'm not going to give up on Bagel Tyme just yet. I'm willing to give them one more try because as I mentioned earlier, I have in the past gotten really good food from them. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way through town. They had a great lunch crowd there. I'm always happy to see small businesses doing well. The staff was super friendly, and our food arrived quick. My husband had the breakfast egg and bacon sandwich. He loved it. I love bagels. I love independent bagel shops. This one was middling. Was in Merced for the run up to my wedding and came here a couple times for breakfast. First time was a Saturday morning and they were so very busy. Ordered two bagels with cream cheese and a hot chocolate. I was a little offended when the cashier questioned the validity of my $2 bills. First by looking for a watermark (they don't have any), then by putting them under some kind of black light type scanner, then running a counterfeit detection pen over them. Maybe it was the biker gear I was wearing, it does tend to put people off. Waited about 30 minutes for my very simple order. The bagels and hot chocolate were very good though. Worth coming back for. Came back the next day. Sunday morning. Same order. Same biker gear. Dead restaurant. Although, they tried to charge me two dollars more for the same order. I think they just plain need a better front of house staff. Good food though. As I said, worth coming back for. This place has a very interesting selection of bagels. I ordered a dozen, and what I think is their hand made cream cheese. I ordered before 7am so most of the bagels were still in stock and they were fresh. The bagels are rich in flavor and same with the cream cheese. The only negative thing I can say is that they do not accept credit cards. Luckily I had cash with me otherwise I would have been out of luck. I'd return.
