I was so thrilled when I saw that Clinton was getting a Mexican food joint! We have plentyyy of pizza/chinese/sandwich places, but we NEEDED something different. This past weekend, I spilt an order of beef nachos and an order of steak nachos with some friends and they were super yummy with HUGE portions. The chips were excellent. Last night, we decided to order dinner from here and we were equally impressed. My husband enjoyed the spicy chicken SOL salad a ton - he was still raving about it this morning. I had the "For the Birds" burrito and it was filling and delicious. Everything was very fresh and tasty. We will definitely be ordering from here again. This place is a near-exact knock-off of Surf Taco on the Jersey shore (it's a small chain with locations in Belmar, Red Bank, and Point Pleasant), right down to the surf videos playing in large-screen TVs, the copied decor, and similar menus. That being said, the food was not good. I had two tacos- fish taco and salmon taco. The fish taco was so so salty it was nearly inedible and the fish was maybe not so fresh. In the salmon taco, the salmon was super over cooked. Even the sour cream on the side somehow tasted not that great?? The weirdest part of this experience is that they were unable to tell us if the black beans were vegetarian or not (ie, not cooked in animal fat). Isn't this something that they should know? Change your expectations before going. This is not a restaurant, it is an indoor west coast taco truck with seating. Very much in the Burger King mode, there are no seating people, and no wait staff. Every menu item is separate; there are no dinner meals or combination plates. Place your order up front, pay for it, take a number sign and find a place to sit. The tables are huge neo-industrial wood laminate slabs, and you sit on a bar stool height bare metal chair several feet off the ground, like a little kid at the holidays. They bring you the food, but you have to pick up your plastic tableware and napkins up front, along with filling your cup from the "flavor shot" soda dispenser. No salt or pepper was visible, but they had a whole tray of Cholulla sauce bottles over in one corner. Take everything to your bare table, and be nice and bus the table and throw out the trash when you're done eating. I had the baja taco and the fish taco, and a bottle of Bai fruit water to drink. $13 total, and I went home starving. Each item comes in a paper lined basket with a handful of "fresh" unsalted taco chips. Don't expect any salsa or queso at the table; this is not a Mexican restaurant. If you want salsa you have to pay for it, either by the "half quart" or from their salsa 'n chip bar item. The tacos are very flavorful, full of shredded cabbage, mango bits, cilantro and some sauce. Maybe. In theory they came with meat, but I doubt if the Baja taco had as many as 2 tiny shrimp, their habanero sauce was either tasteless or absent, and the fish taco might have had a whole teaspoon of fish bits. Maybe less. It looks like a generous portion, mostly fruit and herbs and lettuce/cabbage, but then you realize they are using the smallest tortilla ever made. Too small to be useful, so small it's difficult to dig it out of the bottom of the basket; you'll be eating most of your taco off the chips or with a fork. For $3 more than a $5.25 taco, she had the Baja burrito. It was massive, at least 4 times the food volume of their taco. Although it was poorly wrapped, and fell apart at the first bite, it was crammed with tasty bits and at least 6 nice sized shrimp. As a petite woman, it was about all she could eat. I paid extra so she could have a "side" of sour cream, which was about a tablespoon in one of those dinky plastic cups. How generous. I ate the rest of her chips in desperation. Go for the burritos. The tacos are a total let down if you actually want something to eat. Tasty but microscopic, they are highly expensive for what you get. The place is clean, and freshly painted. But it seems more like children playing restaurant than an actual restaurant. First class food court food, in a food court setting. Not a restaurant. Adjust your expectations ahead of time, and you'll be Ok. I give this place 6 months at most. read more

I wanted to like this place. It's new in town and it would be great to have more options in a small town. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. It has the feel of a fast food chain, but it's not. Maybe the atmosphere is that of a typical beach surfer place, but this is not a beach-surfer town. It felt cafeteria-like and out of sync with the area. The food itself was dry and uninspired. We had a plate of nachos, which was small, and nothing more than a warm pile of chips with beans, cheese and sliced jalapenos, drizzled with sour cream. The Mexican beef tacos were tiny and dry with no toppings other than diced yellow onion and chopped cilantro. We asked for water and were given 4 oz plastic cups to fill at the fountain. My companion said Taco Bell is better than this (and we don't like fast food). I'm afraid I have to agree with him. There are way better Mexican options just a few miles away. I had dinner at Baja last night because I wanted to see for myself if it lived up to the hype I've been hearing...and it does. As previous reviewers mentioned, this is a quick casual restaurant - order at the counter, get a number and someone brings your food to your table in plastic baskets. Knowing that, the food was very fresh and flavorful. The burritos are large and left us all feeling well-fed, although they are messy and required a knife and fork. We had the Surf and Turf burrito, chicken taco and beef burrito - everyone enjoyed their choices. The service was quick - less than 10 mins to get our food. We brought a couple of beers with us and enjoyed the meal with our kids. The decor is fun and lively and the space is well designed. I would highly recommend Baja if your looking for a quick, tasty, inexpensive meal. I can't wait until they start offering takeout and delivery! read more

Tried the surf and turf bowl. Uninspired. Reasonable portion for the price but lacks any wow factor in taste. Shrimp cooked properly but the steak overdone.Excellent ambiance, though a little colder than I'd like on the thermostat setting. Salsa bar is helpful to give some flavor but not enough to zing the taste buds into dreamland. Overall it's like Chipotle without the recipe to get them a reputation beyond Clinton. What a little gem! Stumbled upon this place while extremely hangry. Doing a mostly paleo diet so needed a salad or burrito bowl. Ended up choosing the buffalo salad which was delicious - best I've ever had! Got the dressing on the side which literally wasn't needed. Adding avocado was a great touch, and the combo of chicken and shrimp was . The salsa bar was a fun add on as well. The few chips I allowed myself were so good with the tomatillo/chipotle salsa. Updating my review to tell y'all that the açaí bowls are great, and takeout is quick and courteous. Also updating to attest to the fact that this does not have the charm of a high school cafeteria, for what it's worth! This place is replete with hand-painted beams, colorful ceiling drapes??, and a beautiful octopus mural. I mean, the octopus is even holding various pseudo-Mexican food offerings... perhaps even the type of pseudo-Mexican food that a reasonable person would expect to find in New Jersey. Like several of the other reviewers, I really wanted to like this place. A good burrito / taco place in Clinton would be awesome but unfortunately the food at Baja Burrito is average at best. I ate there twice, the first time I had two Meathead Tacos and the second time I had Nolan's Blackened Cajun Chicken Taco. Convenient parking right in front. The interior and the entire ordering process is straight out of Surf Taco, which is cool because I love Surf Taco. Order at the counter and they give you a number to take to your table. Surfing videos playing on the TV. Both visits, the staff were very friendly. Food comes out quick. Don't order chips, you get enough with your Tacos. Tried all three of the salsas at the salsa bar. They were all bland, almost watered down, and even the one labeled as spicy had no kick at all. The tacos are big, generous portions of meat and toppings. The ground beef in the Meathead tacos is bland and I just was not feeling the chicken in Nolan's taco. Considering the amount of food they give you, the place is fairly priced. read more

This place is new in town so we stopped in to try it for lunch. The menu is large with interesting tacos/burritos/bowls. I had a fish taco and a side of guac and chips. The fish taco was good, but the fish to cabbage ratio was off: too much cabbage & not enough fish. It was topped with a fresh slice of avocado and some fresh pineapple, but overall it was dry and could have used more sauce. My husband had a Meathead's taco and a Wing Man's taco, and he said both were good, but he enjoyed the large chunks of spicy chicken in the Wing Man's. The side guac and chips were both good, but average. We will return to try the burritos, but felt the price for the tacos was too expensive at a range of $4.25-$5.50 for 1 taco & a small side of chips. read more

I've been twice and had 2 different burritos, both chicken. In both cases the burritos are short and chubby. The chicken seemed fresh and nice chunks of chicken. The burrito maker needs to make them tighter, so when you pick them up they don't fall apart. Definitely happy this isn't another pizza joint. Keep up the good work! read more

Friendly service. Lots of seating for a group (we had 13). Parking was limited but menu was not. Could add a bit more spice to the food. Salsa was ok, not great. Only a few chips per plate, so order a side to eat with salsa. read more

Baja Burrito was excellent and exactly what we expected. My husband said "I would go back in a heartbeat". He had two different tacos and I had the Bubba Shrimp Bowl. It was excellent and oh so yummy. This was our first time there but we will certainly be back. We've eaten in several times as well as get delivery from here on several occasions. When we get the food delivered, they will often skimp on some portions. One time our salad was made with roughly 2 leafs of romaine, the next time my burrito bowl was 1/4 full. This place is classified as Mexican on Facebook, Google and Yelp. But when you get there, they tell you they're not Mexican food but in fact, they are "coastal cooking," what ever that means. Everything is a small up charge ie: sour cream. If you want Mexican, go to High Bridge to Casa Maya. Great service, great food. reasonably priced. This is a trendy type wannabe Mexican place that charges above average prices for average food. We've been here about 2-3 times and were never impressed or thought of coming back after the last time. We started going here during the first days of their soft opening, and after only a month after opening its doors I can happily say Baja Burrito Co keeps getting better! The regulars know how it works, but if you're new or passing through town, here's the lowdown: there is a lot on the menu, but take your time. Order at the counter, where the staff will then give you a number to take wit( you to your table. Grab your drink at the self-serve fountain, along with your napkins and hot sauce (so many to choose from!) and find a seat. While you're waiting, you'll be entertained by the surfer videos. Soon, one of the staff will bring your food to you while it's still piping hot. Enjoy! After only one month, the friendly staff has found its rhythm; the food is fresh, delicious, and as ordered; and the "to go" option is super helpful on those crazy nights when our family is running. Fast, yummy, and at a reasonable price point. Also, as someone with a gluten allergy, I can confidently say I can eat several things on the menu with no issue! Love, love, love this place! The best restaurant in Clinton hands down! I eat here once a week and have yet to try something that I would not deem absolutely delicious. Food so good it haunts me, and that is not a figure of speech as I often find myself waking up in the middle of the night, sweating buckets, just dreaming of sinking my teeth into one of their delicious black bird burritos. I'm fact the only complaint I could truly make of this restaurant is that it isn't open late enough to fulfill these cravings when I wake from those dream. Highly recommend! read more

When they opened it was great great food great portions now they charge a lot for small amount for instance surf and turf bowl used to be larger now they downsized the bowl but kept the same price as well as the burritos are so small now compared to what they used to be. Guac and chips listed at market price?!? For the one spoonful I paid for I could of made my own guac at home total RIP OFF won't be visiting again food wasn't as great as previous visits read more

Tacos For Gringos. This place is anything but a Mexican restaurant. I have never before experienced flavorless unseasoned monstrosities disguised as tacos. A piece of unseasoned salmon, slapped on two ungrilled corn tortillas pineapple shredded lettuce and a piece of avocado. People: you have to put salt and pepper on stuff you cook. There's this thing called a lime??? Mexicans tend to use them a lot. Give them a try. There's something called a tomatillo? They're good too. And there's a thing called a tomato. You will love them. Better yet, hire some Mexicans to rewrite your menu and then let them cook the food because you have no business being in a kitchen. NEVER going back here. YUK. read more

The food is pretty good but they kill you when you need to add an ingredient to a dish. You can take off 2 or 3 ingredients, like without the chicken and cheese and and then add one, like beans, and they will add as much $2 to the cost read more
