I really enjoy the tacos here. The fish tacos are absolutely amazing and they def put Fuzzy's fish tacos to shame. I don't know if its the sauce, the meaty fish, or the fixins...but its good! The prices are great and the portions serve justice. The margaritas are such a kicker. I had a mango BABY(smaller glass) margarita and it still had me feeling super friendly! I'm usually the type that can contain myself but I cut myself off after ONE drink! Def check out the drink specials and margaritas! The restrooms are interesting too! Well this used to be out favorite bar/restaurant to come to even driving out of our way to come here at least once per week, sometimes more. Food was great and couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. The staff was great and funky and they knew us by name and really made the place what it was. Too bad they all decided to change the staff and management style of the place when everything was going perfect. We really miss the vibe and wish they didn't Change the recipe when things were going right. ***Update*** Went back to give it a try again after the staffing has had time to settle in. This place was absolutely great when they first opened...unfortunately, they have gone a bit downhill in the past couple of years. Their tacos are still really good, but they have raised prices and eliminated several of the best items from their menu recently. I would have ranked at least 4, if not 5 stars in the first year they were open, but competition in the area plus the dropping of some menu items and the raising of prices dropped it to a 3 (still really good tacos though). The Averno burger (basically a plain burger covered in habenero and Oaxaca cheese) and the best Cuban Sandwich around have been eliminated and the tacos are now about $4 apiece. That is definitely not expensive if you are only having one or two, but considering they have just doubled the price over the past couple of years and not made any changes to the tacos has just put us off a bit. We still go there...but just less frequently (I mean, where else can you get a great-tasting calamari taco? nowhere). It is a decent place to watch the game or have a few cold beers, but there is more competition in that area over the past couple of years and Funky Baja's is just a slightly better alternative than the majority. Been a while since I've been here and things different. Seems cleaned up and aesthetics better but worse where it counts. The guacamole had a lot more kick so I OK with but my wife hated. The normally quick tacos took 20 min to get there and crappy lettuce in the lettuce wrap (it fell apart). Our waitress was really occupied with something other than checking on us so had empty tea glass, ran out of chips and couldn't pay to leave. It a shame, I used to love this place. read more

Labor Day lunch! It's a pretty chill atmosphere. It's not too loud nor too packed. There's music playing in the background, TVs set up around the restaurant, and a lot of cool items hung up on the walls. There's also outdoor seating. All of the food we got was okay... The only thing my boyfriend didn't like was the rice the used in his Mistico burrito, but the steak and shrimp made up for it. I had the Psych burrito and I thought it was great. The briskrt in it was tender and juicy and all of the flavors worked out great together. Now, onto the bacon cheeseburger, I felt like it was somewhat overpriced... $6.50. It doesn't mention the fries were an extra $2. $8.50 for burger and fries is around what you'd normally pay at certain bars and restaurants, however there are other places where you can get both for a couple bucks cheaper. Overall thoughts on the burger was okay, the patty was a bit dry and not as juicy (probably due to it being thick and they really had to cook it through). The onion rings and so cal fries were bomb dot com! It's a bar type atmosphere and the bar type appetizers are great. If you're looking for a chill little bar in the area with great appetizers, then this is the place to go. If you're looking for actual entrees to eat, well that all depends on what you want... If you want burritos and tacos, I say go for it. If you're looking for a gourmet type burger, I'd probably say there are better places out there. Keep calm and have fun eating. read more

Went today, Tuesday, for the last time... When I got my bill... I found out that they no longer have $2 Tacos on Tuesdays, all tacos are $3.50 all the time (instead of $3) and the tacos are a bit smaller to boot. ...that they now charge $3 for 1/2 cup of black beans and 1/2 cup of rice, used to be $2 ...that they charge you for chips & salsa, plus the queso when you request queso, so the $3 for a cup of queso on the menu, is really $5.50. ...so they've ruined the nice little place to eat a cheap, but good meal with the DH and friends on Tuesdays. It went from $15-$18 (for 2) with tip to $30-$34, I'd rather go somewhere else, less dark inside, for that. read more

We have been regulars of Funky since the day it has opened. I had my high school graduation party at the origin BAJA on 377 12 years ago. Funky is our favorite location because the staff is PHENOMENAL. We are regulars here and come at least once a week, as do my parents. The food is phenomenal and the margaritas are unparalleled. The staff is what keeps us coming. They are like family and know our faces and know our names and family. This is by far our favorite place and has become our friends favorite place. this was our first time to eat at this location, we normally go to the Watauga location. the food was amazing, the only problem was that the waitress was not wearing a mask, when she attended to our order. and even when she brought our food and when she brought me the bill. Even though this place has every appearance of a mediocre strip-shop restaurant, I'm here to tell you that Funky Baja stands above the rest. Every time I have visited, the staff has been so quick and friendly, and the delicious salsa is fresh roasted (although it's not free with your meal). I am also positively certain that anyone from this area that has eaten at Baja's will tell you they FIEND for the deadly good murdaritas. And the Funky variety of Baja's actually plays decent music when there's not a game going on... and by 'decent music' I mean non-poptart garbage. I have ordered mostly all of their $3 Freakin' Tacos, the grilled Fishman and El Campeon are in my top picks, BUT I have to say I will never order them again... only because I have converted to the cult of the El Martinete. With the meal, you get four tacos with your choice of 4 proteins (in any variety). My boyfriend and I ordered two carnitas and two brisket tacos to share and the portions of meat were plentiful enough to satisfy us both. The carnitas were absolutely mouth-watering! Out there last Tuesday with a friend for dinner--super loud environment so don't go if you're hoping to have a private conversation. Food was not nearly as impressive as I was hoping for--I tried 3 different tacos and felt kind of 'meh' about all of them. Saving them from a lower star rating--service was super attentive and quick--plus I mentioned what a sucky day I was having to the waitress when ordering and I"m pretty sure they gave me double the booze in margarita at no cost. Not good. Don't trust the reviews. If you're from So-Cal, you will be disappointed. We got the chips and salsa and the chips were swimming in grease at the bottom of the dish. The salsa was alright, but could use more flavor. We tried both the grilled and fried fish tacos. The grilled were okay, but just okay. The fried fish was mostly breading with a little fish in the middle. We also had the steak and shrimp burrito. It was mostly just rice and tortilla. The shrimp are baby shrimp and the few bits of steak were all chopped up and almost nonexistent. Even the avocado was tiny. Maybe one thin slice? We will not be back. read more

This is a great place to grab a drink and socialize with friends or just go to have lunch or dinner. The bar is usually pretty crowded, especially on game nights, so get there early. Its more of a sports bar type feel, it does get loud. Their queso is fabulous! Their tacos are sooo amazing. I can't remember the name of the 3 I've tried but they were very tasty. Pretty casual place. They have peanuts near the door that you eat and throw the shells on the floor. It's not a dirty place though. I always have a great time when I go. We used to frequent this little spot quite often. Their food was always tasty. Service was always a little lacking, but hey, it's a dive-bar, what do you expect? We went last weekend and got the same things as usual, So-Cal Fries, 2 Fishman Tacos, and a Taco Salad. Their Carne Asada was a joke this time. It tasted as if it had been microwaved and they usually serve us with a couple little plates, but not this time. We had to fend for ourselves. They didn't use Mexican Crema, they used Sour Cream instead and there's a huge difference. Thumbs down for the So-Cal Fries that used to ROCK. The wife's salad had the same, bland carne asada in it and she didn't finish it because of the lack of flavor. My fishman tacos were about the same flavor-wise, but they were definitely smaller than they used to be. All totaled, our bill was higher and the food was much much worse and smaller portions. I loved the choice of margaritas, such as the cucumber and the jalapeño. The drinks are large and tasty. The only issue I had was that I think the food has changed a bit since we first tried it last fall. The So-Cal Fries were good enough, but not as good as last time. The cheese seemed different. The wings didn't have much sauce on them either, and although they were habanero-mango, they were still sort of bland. I'll still go back, because the drinks and tacos are great! read more

Seemed like a cool little restaurant; reminded me a lot of Fuzzy's tacos. When we went there we had no idea they owned Baja Tacos, which is one of our favorite local places. We were in a hurry, so we sat at the bar. Service was decent, though we had to flag the bartender down a few times. The margaritas were good, but not as strong as at Baja's! We ordered chips, salsa and queso. The salsa and chips were good, I wasn't a fan of the queso. Seemed like they used processed cheese. It was taco tuesday, so they had a special on tacos; we ordered a few. The el campeon (brisket, cheese, avocado, onions & poblanos), the el santo (chicken, cilantro & queso fresco) and el cobarde (orange marinated pork, cotija cheese, cilantro, avocado & pickled habanero red onions). The el campeon was good, great flavor, the el santo would have been better flavored like the el cobarde. The chicken was a little bland. Overall the place was not bad, but it wasn't anything special either. If we are in the area again, we may stop in again. read more

We used to come here all the time until one night about a year ago, we couldn't get waited on, so I stood up, walked to the bar by the order register and was going to order my drink and ask for a waiter. This is when I saw something disgusting. Several waiters were pouring shots and shooting them. One young girl giggled, turned and took a shot straight from the bottle, as if no one could see her! Bad? Yup! But, worst was when they capped the bottle that had just been mouthed on, and touched by several probably grubby hands...and STUCK IT IN THE ICE MACHINE THEY USE FOR CUSTOMER DRINKS!!!!!! Yup the employees personal tequila bottle cooler. I was so grossed out. I told my husband what just happened and he wanted to leave. We used to frequent the more upscale location in Southlake a lot but this made us stop going to any locations. The reason is I called Southlake, because they knew us by name, and told the manager and he said he'd investigate and get back to us. Never happened. Fast forward..a year later it was later at night and we were hungry. So we thought ok, we used to love Funkys, so one more chance to see if they cleaned up the act. We walk in at 9:30. Not greeted at all. Stand around like dummies. See someone sweeping, several tables are filled with patrons, patrons at the bar etc. I ask if we just seat ourselves. He looks up and says AHHH man! we're closed. Closed? What time do you close I ask? 10pm, but we decided to close early tonight. Wow. So I call the manager from my phone and a girl answers. When I asked for the manager she laughed and hung up on me. I call back and for the next 8 minutes she would pick up and hang up, but my phone didn't disconnect..so I'd wait, she'd pick up again giggle and hang up. I'd yell LET me speak to a manager! and she'd hang up. Warning....do not come here. Spoke to manager the next day and she had nothing but excuses for her staff, phone lines have been screwy, we were dead so we closed early, and our staff is awesome and most here for years(all I could think of was tequila scene). Management is killing this place and OWNERS OF BAJA if you read this, Keller folks don't put up with crappy service long...wonder why your business is much slower then it used to be? Keller is a great city to live in, but the restaurant offerings have needed some growth for a long time. We are up and coming though, with some relatively new places that are getting good reviews, this place being one of them. I am happy to note that this place is a refreshing improvement on the restaurant scene in the city. First off, I couldn't believe how busy the place was, being that it's in a strip mall, and I struggled to find a parking space on a Wednesday night. I walked in, and thought I was at some trendy place in Southlake or Dallas. There were people everywhere, at the bar, all the tables were full, and I had to wait in line. So far, so good. We were given a table within a few minutes. The wait staff were friendly. I love the Luche Libre (Mexican wrestler) theme on the walls and the menus. My boys and I loved the Nacho Libre movie, so we were right at home. The place kind of has a Mexican cantina / beach party vibe that is fun. I had the fried fish and pulled pork tacos. They were really good. The food prices are reasonable here. The beer is cold. The atmosphere is fun. What else could ya want? Go there! read more

Came in after hitting a few golf balls on a Tuesday about 7:00 with a friend. It was hoppin already but only had to wait 5 minutes. The chips and hot sauce are great. I consider myself a hot sauce aficionado, and this sauce is one of the best I have had in a while. I got the dos caras and the el santo. The dos caras was pretty good though the shrimp needs to be grilled more and seasoned a bit more. The el santo was meh. The chipotle shredded chicken was disappointing. My friend got the el campeon and pretty much made me jealous the entire meal, so thats what im getting next time. Now our server really turned me off. I understand it gets busy but the dude had no personality and started to run a little behind when i wanted another shiner. I just like being served by people who like their job, pretty sure this guy (Champo or something like that) didnt want to be there. My husband and I found this Gem a year ago when we moved to Keller and now we go there weekly. We love the atmosphere and the food. The bartenders are the best (shout out to Sam and Ferris)! Everything we have tried there is very tasty. A couple of my favorites are the El Campeon taco, the Espanto taco, and Issa's Queso (with brisket). Oh and I cannot forget my favorite, the Skinny Margarita's. Most places where you order a skinny margarita they suck, but not at Funky. They are just as tasty as the regular margaritas. Be aware though, it is part of the Baja brand so the margaritas pack a punch! This is a great place to get together with friends, have happy hour, or just go out and watch the games. It's been 3 years since I moved back to SoCal from Keller, but Funky Baja was one of my favorite places to go, and I was quite a regular when I was living there. I recently went back while visiting my sons and wanted to check it out to see if it was still as good as what I remember. I had heard they had made some management changes and there were a lot of mixed reviews. We went in on Tuesday, 6/14 for Taco Tuesday, since that was always our ritual. I remember they used to have $2 tacos on Tuesdays, and I was a bit disappointed they went up to $3 each, and they actually got smaller than before. I have to say, they still were the best tacos around, as I would definitely classify them as "gourmet tacos" rather than your simple meat, onions and cilantro, and hot salsa type street tacos. Great taste! Our server's name I believe was Dustin and he said he had only been there for a few months. He did a great job in getting us our food and beers in a timely fashion. In the past I would have given this restaurant a 4. We have frequented Funky's since they opened. They make a tasty taco, and serve a great margarita. I'm going to guess 1-1 /12 years ago something changed. The food, drinks and kitchen were still great and fast, but the food servers became increasingly rude and inattentive. Tonight, we were actually treated to an extremely rude food server that argued with us 3 times. I let the manager know, she said she would talk to him, but didn't believe me when I said there had been a negative change to the wait staff. Result is me, my friends and family will not return. I hope others will do the same. Oh, and they did away with the laminated sheet menu, and have small stand-up ones on the table that were very difficult to read. We had to use a flashlight, as did other people and still couldn't read the beer list. I think they will survive due to the lack of restaurants in this area. read more

After years of loving their food...I am unbelievably disappointed in the quality and flavor. I don't know if it's under new ownership in the last year, but I won't go back. I ordered food for my office, hamburgers, fries, 3 dif kinda of tacos, chips, queso and salsa. EVERYTHING was different from before and it was not good. Queso tasted like Frito Lay out of jar, salsa also tasted like it was out of a jar. The slaw on the fish tacos was shredded cabbage, the beer battered fish had no flavor. My family and I recently went to Funky on a Wednesday night. The staff must have been too busy to acknowledge us because we stood awkwardly inside the doorway for almost 10 minutes without so much as a "hello" from anyone. Just a side note: there used to be a hostess all the time, and now there isn't even a hostess stand... which is pretty confusing after well over a year of coming here consistently and being seated by a hostess. We were eventually "greeted" by an older, Hispanic woman who asked us "how many?" in a very unfriendly way. She seemed totally uninterested in helping us and not happy (would a fake smile been too much to ask?). We've been here loads of times but have never had an issue communicating where we wanted to sit and how many we had coming. She couldn't understand us and we had to talk to a server to clarify - something that seemed to make her even more grouchy because she was mumbling something in Spanish under her breath. We finally sat down and our female server, who was super friendly (sorry I can't remember her name!), made up for the not-so-nice hostess. We didn't have any issues until our food came out. We ordered wings since we always get wings on Mondays and have fallen in love with them! We asked for naked with no breading and they came out twice with breading even after we watched our server speak to the guys in the kitchen about them. My husband asked the server if we could speak with a manager about it because the wings took so long to cook that by the third round of them (which came out right), the rest of our table was completely done with their food. She said she would send her over and we watched her speak with the same woman who sat us... That's the manager?! You can understand our surprise. She seemed upset and argumentative with our server, but went to the computer. Its unfortunate that she never came to our table to talk about the situation. She just took the wings off, which we were grateful for, but left our server to apologize to us over and over. It wasn't handled appropriately or professionally. There is a lack of attention to detail with this manager/hostess. After a year and half of coming here, we will not be coming back. The food and the rest of the staff are generally great but this new manager who we've never seen before obviously doesn't care about customer satisfaction or just plain being a nice person. The waitstaff is always friendly and attentive making it very welcoming and overall a fun place to be.
