Some of my party had amazing dishes and others did not. Many complained that one taco was good but their second one was not. As for me, I had a chalupa and thought it was pretty tasty definitely add the spicy salsa with it. It's a bit pricey, but flavor (depending on your dish) is worth. read more

Man... really had issues coming here. Not sure if they had a fill in crew or what. The girl taking the orders didn't speak English so I tried Spanish, but the problem was she also didn't know how to work the iPad. Also she had no idea what was on the menu. Half the items came out wrong we ate some anyway and tried to send one back to get it corrected and received some kick back, but eventually got it corrected. Not sure how, but lunch cost me $70 . The food truck scene is on fire in Kauai. Chalupas didn't disappoint. I ordered the tostada and loved several aspects of the dish. The slaw was great, the fish was fresh and well seasoned and the tortilla was homemade and delicious. My one slight negative evaluation was the pinto beans. Lacked a little bit of flavor/salt. We found Chalupas on a recommendation from a local. We were told the best fish tacos she'd ever had were from here! We both agree!!! We actually ate here 3 times during our vacation. The first time we both ordered Ahi tuna tacos. Some of the freshest fish have ever had. Each plate had 2 tacos and some tortilla chips. The chips themselves come out of a bag. They're not bad, but not fresh made. They were extremely useful in picking up any of the taco filling that ended up on the plate. You will not want to miss a single morsel! The Ahi tacos had a wonderful wasabi sauce, it added a kick and wasn't overpowering. On our return visits we had the Barbacoa burrito and Carne Asada tacos. Both were excellent! The Barbacoa beef melts in your mouth. The burritos are huge, so you may want to share. Of course after you take a bite, you might just tell your friend to back off and get his own! If you find yourself anywhere on Kauai, go to Chalupas!!!! Miguel's cooking is worth the trip. Remember to go hungry! read more

Pricey for what you get. I got tacos and the meat seemed old like it had been in the warmer for days on end. Very basic taco, not much to the imagination. Let me start off by saying that I'm Mexican-American and grew up in a urban area of Orange County, Ca. Mexican food has been a staple for me over the last 30 years. So if anyone knows about Mexican food, it would be me. Anyways, after 3 weeks of looking for a decent mexican meal in Kauai we stumbled across Chalupa, which is a catering truck located behind the Old Koloa Town. We decided to give this place a try... and could have not been happier. The service was amazing, the menu was simple and most importantly the food was DELICIOUS!! I had the super carnitas burrito and my mom had the carde asada burrito. BOTH items were very tasty. They reminded us of our favorite local place... but not as greasy and super fresh. Alright, my first review since moving to Kauai will be this place. It is certainly very deserving of a great review, regardless of what has been posted by some others previously. You suckers will get my thoughts on your reviews in a moment, but not before I give my thoughts on the wonderful food. I have eaten here a few times, and I must say, I crave the food. I have enjoyed the Shrimp Diablo Tacos, and the Carnitas, as well as the Ahi Tacos today, on different occasions. It has always been spectacular. Anyone who has read my previous reviews may know what a fan I am of authentic Mexican food, carnitas in particular, and my adoration of where it comes from: hole in the wall places that double as apartments, trucks, coolers on skateboards at Grateful Dead concerts. (Actually, the where has hardly been in my reviews, and I just dated myself). I do know the difference between a poor and amazing taco truck though, and this one is gold. The ahi was very fresh, as it should be, and I don't know how he did it, but it was seared in such a way that it would seem fully cooked to a finicky fish eater, but still so tender and uncooked in the middle for those of us who like ahi as it should be, blatantly raw. I have never had the best of both worlds like that. Even great chefs simply searing the meat, touching it momentarily to the hot surface, do not get the tender and succulent results he got out of the fish that was served in my taco. And that is just how it was cooked. The wasabi sauce that complimented it was astounding. It would not offend the most cowardly of non-spicy eating people, but it was still delightful to a heat seeking fiend like myself. The man in the truck is a balancing master, I say, ready to juggle on a unicycle upon a tightrope, as far as food is concerned. He can make everyone happy except cheapskates and people who know that he buys chips from the same store they do (oops, I was saving harsh comments for later.) Maybe he should be sorry he's not Chevy's with an employee devoted to fresh hot chips? His salsas are each unique, the hot, mild, and chipotle. What amazes me is less the scale of heat, than the unique flavor that each one of the salsas provide. $ .75 for a shot-glass of salsa? Sign me up, it's that good. Each is distinctive, and the habenero is by favorite. For some reason, habeneros and the salsa they make is better than on the mainland. In the kitchens I have worked in in California, the habanero pepper is often regarded as flavorless heat, but in Koloa, the pepper has found it's home. It has a wonderful fruity quality; it is hot, but you just want to keep eating the sweet, fruity, vibrant goodness. Anyways, his salsa is home made, in fact on my second visit, perhaps from the previous Yelpers, the guy warned me that his chips were from Costco, but that his salsa was made fresh. Really, this guy is trying to make a living out of a truck, making his salsa by hand with ingredients that cost him money that he is not buying in bulk, and you want it for free? Do you think his rent is free? In the beans....do I taste epazote? 99.99% of people who are not from Mexico do not know what I'm talking about. Often called Mexican Oregano, it has a very distinctive taste, but if that is what he is using, he is doing it with subtlety and finesse. If it is something else he is using, let me just say that the beans are delicious, and I want to know what it is. To me that is a mark of excellence, to make what is often considered the standard fare taste amazing. There are far too many places which would cook a steak perfectly and serve it with soggy vegetables, for example. This guy takes pride in all that he serves, I can taste it. Now to all you who posted negative reviews: Docking someone stars because they are not as cheap as you want them to be means you are a chump. Yeah, I've done it too over like $10 beers or something, but not because I didn't get something for free. Value is important, but get a sense of where you are, and who the person is who is serving you. $ .75 for a cup of home made salsa? Or $8 beer at a theme park? This is a person, who fed you. Fed you like his mother fed him, with love. You can taste when someone cooks with the heart, and I know it is there and it's real. Upset because he runs credit cards from his mobile phone? At least he takes your card. Are your really complaining because he messages or e-mails you a receipt? Complaining on Yelp? Not tech savvy enough to figure out how to claim a work-lunch on your tax return from a roadside taco stand? Please. Morons who eat great food and don't know it and gripe about sneeze guards and the way a person hangs their signs have many places that will do a splendid job of pandering to their high standard of culinary sophistication. I recommend Hometown Buffet, they are quite filling, and the sneeze guards quite clear the top of the plate. read more

So, just returned from my second visit to Kauai earlier this week, and ended up eating at Chalupa's three times during out ten day visit. To be completely honest, I was crushed when we first arrived back on Kauai and discovered that my favorite fish taco place of ALL TIME (Al Pastor) was closed for the entire time we were on the island. Honestly, I had been dreaming about their fresh fish tacos for weeks. Luckily, after trying a few other fish taco trucks in Kauai, and being very disappointed, we happened upon Chalupa's - their fresh fish tacos are absolutely amazing. Ordered the chicken chipotle burrito, the flavor of the chicken was really good however for the price the burrito is mostly just rice. The rice is definitely what fills up the burrito with a little scoop of beans and a few shreds of lettuce. The salsa was no where to be seen, definitely not worth paying 8 plus dollars for just rice. A two because I felt it was unsanitary. The food was decent. The quesadilla was tasty overall, the chalupas (fish) were just okay but the fish was not fishy which is great but it lacked flavor. The carnitas burrito was ok too, I have had much better. The salsa was gross and the chips were underdone and very few were given which was fine since it wasnt tasty. The main issue is the gross wild chickens all over the tables that had not been cleaned ever. Just felt very unsanitary and I am not a germaphobe or anything. Best to take this good to go if you even bother but I would rather eat somewhere else. read more

The order: 1 beef chimichanga, plain, no sour cream, guacamole or salsa. 1 order fish tacos, flour tortillas, no salsa The result: 1 chimichanga, fully loaded 1 order fish tacos, corn tortillas. The guy working the counter of the truck seemed to have a big attitude with any changes made to the order and then still messed them up. Really, it's not that hard guys. $24 for a chimichanga and 2 tacos. Way expensive, even for Hawaii and a food truck most of all. read more

4 tacos and a can of Pepsi = $20. Really? I get that food is even more expensive in Hawaii than it is in the Bay Area, but this is extreme. And the food was not even that good. I watched him scoop the chips from a huge Kirkland brand bag and could not distinguish the taste between the red and the chipotle sauce (maybe the chipotle one tasted less like from a can? even though the signage does profess that "everything is fresh". . . ) The chiptole chicken was really just so so and the barbacoa beef tasted more boiled than anything.
