We all think the idea of a horror theme cafe is super cool, but one of us is a huge horror buff--like Edgar Allen Poe is her soulmate. When It finally became TUESDAY, we loaded the three of us into the car for the drive. We had an itinerary for the whole day, with a couple of planned stops along the way. The idea was to arrive at Roxy's right at our lunchtime for an icecream and espresso desert, which would be new for us. We got there quite a bit early, and met with the very nice owner, she's very engaging with her customers. It was still early for lunch, so with our spare time we went on a little walk. After spending most of our time at an awesome park, we return to Roxy's for lunch as promised. That's when we found out about our ice cream and espresso experience. Online claims she has like 12 flavors. To us this meant an array of flavors to complement an espresso--she had four basic flavors. Ok, we didn't get our Ice cream and espresso experience. I still got a strawberry shake with my lunch, which was good and made me happy! The menu is where the horror theme shines a little. The food names like the Frankenstein Chicken sandwhich, and other items like Buffy's Garlic Burger, remind you of the fun potential of this place. I got the Frankenstein. Now, for a tiny little kitchen, using all re-invented prepackaged stuff, it wasn't bad--good actually. By re-invented I mean, she takes like frozen chicken pieces, and stews or simmers them in her secret sauce (which she doesn't share, keeps secret) to make some pretty tasty stuff. She does the same kind of thing with the frozen beef patties that she buys. My other half said the burger she got was not smashed in house, but in no way did it seem like store bought frozen patties. So, thumbs up to that idea. Now I wish I could be as enthusiastic about the whole scene, but it was not at all what we were hoping for after researching it. Don't get me wrong, there is horror movie pics, and decor on the entrance walls, and some in the adjecent, small dining room. What's supposed to be horror focused, and could be with some effort, looks given up on, with a crystals and novelty shop now being the main focus. That whole back shop is pretty cool though, and has some unique stuff, but is in pretty much disarray. I mean, this makes me feel a little sad, cuz the woman who owns/runs the shop is very nice. She's friendly and talkative, but we noticed a lot of distractions while she was trying to run the business. It's a great idea, but It seems she just can't keep up. The place is dirty. The bathrooms looked and smelled like they rarely get a good cleaning. All in all--it just doesn't live up to its name or hype. Please go there and check it out for yourself. If the horror doesn't creep all over you, maybe finding some cool stuff in the shop, welcoming service, and a tasty bite will be a great visit for you. 4* for reminding me that food doesn't have to be top-quality to be gourmet, and simply because it's cute, but that's not what I was there for, I was there for spooky music and dark theme. The barista was super nice about it, apologized and handed me my original cinnamon-based hot drink and it was really good. She even made it half sweet, as I had requested. So why only three stars? Well, it was the conversation I had to listen to while I waited on my coffee being made. These are the little things people, and a lot of times companies don't understand that it can really make a difference in a customer experience. The conversation pretty much went like this: "She is such a bleep, I bleeping hate her, she's such a bleeping gossip. What the bleep was she thinking? " Something like that. You get the picture. Now I'm all about a well placed cuss word..but it was awkward for the full 8 minutes I had to sit there. It was easy to hear...no straining, and they didn't hold back because I was sitting there and a guy standing up in the back saw me sitting at the window in my car. I didn't want to make eye contact, I felt like I was intruding on their space. But, I'm just a coffee camel, looking for my coffee mate in a pretty desolate desert for coffee. I mostly avoided it because how hyped up it was to me being the most trendy place in rexburg. But thanks to my wife we tried it, they were doing a special where it was only $5 a cup... which made it super busy. We waited in line for about an hour, they were really good at having heaters for everyone outside and were really on top of customer service. Definitely don't make the same mistake I made and wait 4 years to try it... if you do you'll regret it.
