I was intrigued by the catchy name and just had to visit this place. I went after work and figured in the evening I would be able to find a parking spot. I was so wrong! Sweet Buns is located in a very busy plaza and you definitely have to keep your eyes open for a spot. After I parked the car and walked in the bakery, I was pleasantly surprised by the layout. The bakery was clean and very inviting. It's not like a traditional bakery where you have to wait for an associate to assist you. It is a self service bakery. The only time you have to interact with an associate is if you have a question, need to place an order for a special item to be made or ready to checkout. I definitely was like a kid in a candy store and grabbed up the treats they had left in the glass casing. Unfortunately, I can't remember the specific names of the bakery items but I can guarantee everything was delicious!!! If you're in need of a delicious, airy and tasty treat- you should definitely give this place a chance (just bring your eagle eye game for a parking spot). read more

The sponge cake, cheesecake and mouse( I have had the coffee) are delicious but service is absolutely a fail. Not sure what it is I feel as if I am bothering them when giving order. This place is like stepping into straight into china! Such a beautiful and amazing experience! Every single bun us a work of art! You'll have a hard time choosing just one, so I suggest you get several! I have never seen a place like this in Florida and it rivals the best bakeries of California! The buns are so beautiful you almost don't want to eat them, emphasis on the 'almost' :) I had the butter white bun first, and it is so soft and delicious, the craisin (raisin?) on top was the perfect amount of tart to accent the sweet buttery cream and bread. I'm a sucker for cream! We also had the Japanese cheesecake which is by far the best I've had in Florida! I am from St. Petersburg and I made the drive up here just for the bakery and it was definitely worth it! You definitely need to try it, there's just no place like it! It's very clean and safe as well, I felt very comfortable having a coffee a quick bun bite before heading back on the road, if I could give it 10 stars I could! This is a welcome to Tampa from a native New Yorker who just returned from Chinatown in New York! I found out from Yelp friend that this newly opened a bakery is here close to USF,Right next to chicken salad chick on fowler avenue. I drove over and of course my mission was to try all of the butter buns. I purchased the very large with dried cranberry as well as the coconut covered butter bun, onion tart, cheese and egg tart, ham and cheese tart. The butter buns are large enough to split sweet creamy butter filling in a fluffy bread! This is authentic serve yourself grab a tray grab a pair of tongs walk around take as many pastries as you can put it on the tray bring the tray and the tongs to the front counter pay the lady. Easy convenient quick perfect for students plenty of seating plenty of electrical cords plug-in charger phone charger computer what a great place! They also serve hot food of course I had a order of dumpling soup to take away it was as expected very good and welcome when we have some cool weather here in Tampa Florida. Pricing is absolutely reasonable most of the buns are between two and four dollars and it is plenty for a quick snack or a small meal. I love some Asian styles buns. I find that the bakery items aren't as sugary as the American/European counterpart. These buns are light, soft and not to sweet. This was a perfect stop to get something I knew wouldn't hurt my tummy or teeth after eating. When visiting the Chinese grocer I always pick up a custard bun. But this place takes it to a whole other level. They do have the normal custard bun but they also have so many other options. The concept of diy serving and tray with thongs to pick up the pastry was different and nice. I would have to say their custard bun was wayyyyyy better than the fortune star custard bun I find in most Asian markets locally. I really enjoyed the custard, taro, coconut bun I had. Today is my mom's birthday , she wants a cake from this bakery and my house is really far from this store, thats why I called them by phone to order ahead. Then I had to drive like 1 hour and when I get there, They just said 'sr, ur order hasn't been maker yet cuz we need you to pay first to finish your order?!?!?' WTH, ok, I can understand why they had to charge money first but why they dont just call back to my number to tell me instead of canceling my order. And I did ask them to make a cake for my mom right at that time, but they tell me they out of the durian to make that cake .They even asked me if I want to get the 8 small pieces instead, how can I bring a cake which is cut into 8 pieces already to my mom birthday? Been waiting for an asian bakery to open up with in the area. I'm originally from Atlanta, GA so we have lots of these around and I missed the bake goodies. Sweet Buns reminds me of some of those places I used to visit when i lived in Atlanta. They have a variety of breads and pastry for those that have a craving for sweets and even savory items. Besides the bake goodies, it looks like they also have hot meals to order. I never ordered the hot meals; only grab and go with the bake goods. Keep in mind this is an Asian Bakery so the pastries are not super sweet which is great and the textures are nice and fluffy. If you go in the morning around 10 am, you'll have a variety to choose from, but if you go later in the day, most of the items are gone. So make sure you plan a head because this place have been a hot place with high demands! read more

This place had only opened a month ago, but i have been here so many times! I have tried their location in Gainesville and I was so excited when I first heard about this bakery opening in Tampa. I would definitely recommend coming early in the day, seeing as they stop restocking the bakery items after a certain time. Sweet Buns is a bakery with an interesting concept: you are able to walk around with a tray and pick your bakery items via tongs, and you just go to the front and check out, just as if you were at a grocery store. They have different stuff everyday and the prices are fairly cheap so you should never be afraid of trying something new! I highly recommend the pineapple buns, egg tarts, or the red bean buns. They also have food for people who want to sit down and grub. I haven't tried any yet, but I will definitely be updating my review as soon as I do. The bakery itself is fairly clean and well-managed. I have never had a single problem when I came here. The bakery is located in a plaza with many stores like Winn-Dixie, Bobacup, and Tijuana Flats. Sweet Buns is a new bakery, owned by Yummy House I believe, that has happened open up in the USF area. It's located in the Winn Dixie Plaza so there is plenty of parking. The concept here is, you grab a tray, place a wax sheet on top, grab some tongs, and then start picking away at all the fresh baked goods they have in their display cases. They have a pretty good selection of savory and sweet baked goods. Pick from egg tarts, taro buns, milk buns, sponge cakes, and other various bakery products. You can also pick from hot dog buns, pork buns, ham buns. You really do have a lot of options! They even have packaged sweets and breads as well. Cookies, Japanese cheese cakes, and other sweets can be found on the shelves or on top of the cases. Really can't go wrong if you're looking for something a little different. You then take your tray to the register and they package all you goodies for you. I have to admit, the checkout process was kind of slow as they are packaging things in bags. So if you have multiple products, I think their biggest bag only holds like 2 items. Boxes would probably be a better choice to speed this up just a bit. All in all, if you're looking for some new sweet and savory baked goods, then come and check Sweet Buns out! read more

I love this place! It's the only bakery I know in Tampa area where I could get Cantonese style buns and cakes. My family comes here every week. The pastries and cakes are made fresh there and are sooo delicious. The pastries are fluffy, moist, and lightly sweetened. The price of the pastries is reasonable. The bakery also sells Hong Kong style milk tea for $5(the cost is pricey). The tea is rich and flavorful. read more

And when we ask for paying our items in 2 bills, she has no patients with us and said just one talk with me, but actually we're not talking together. Having spent a few months last year in China, my kids were thrilled to walk into this new bakery in Tampa. They could not stop saying that this reminded them of the bakery in Tianjin. I was so excited to see Sweet Buns open because I love Asian style bakeries. What I had was good, but I don't know if I was there on the wrong day but the selection was meh. There was almost no sweet options and almost all of what they had was either pork or cheese. If I had to make a suggestion I would say defiantly add more sweet options. Love this place, the baked goods are priced well and reminds me of when I lived on Argyle in Chicago. If you know, you know. My favorite bun is the oreo and cream. It's not too sweet it's more buttery. I was surprised how good it was toasted in the toaster oven. Also the best part about this place is their milk pudding. It's the creamiest pudding I've had yet. Lightly fried, and good amount of filling. 9 Last was a red bean croissant. Not my thing, but still was super soft and seemingly well-made. More of a personal preference, so can't fault them on that.
