The little shop that could. To my surprise, I have never reviewed the bakery that has been a part of my life for over 30 years. A tiny Puerto Rican bakery named after the islands iconic mini-frog that sings it's name. In the corner of a strip center on the corner of Waters and Manhattan, this tiny place does a ton of business. While there are a couple small tables inside and outside, the majority of their business is take-out. The menu is more extensive than one would think. The highlights being breakfast, a great variety of sandwiches and cuban toasts, a long list of natural fruit juices and smoothies and the assortment of traditional baked confections and pastries. The surprise is, it's all so good. I used to visit quite often many years ago for my cafe con leche and something to eat. Nowadays, I drop in for some goodies when I visit my son who lives nearby. The pricing is very pocket friendly. Today, it was to satisfy my wifes craving for alcapurrias, an island delicacy that few places make well. It is a deep fried, savory meat filled fritter made with a pasty dough that can be a combination of ground up green plantain or green banana mixed with ground yuca or yautia which are root vegtables. A family favorite. I got myself a Media Noche which is a smaller version of a cuban sandwich on sweet egg bread. There are 3 choices of bread...cuban, pan sobao or grinder sized egg bread. All good. The center has it's own parking and the place is very busy during meal times. They are very quick though, very organized and the counter girls fast, accurate and efficient. Expect to be called "Mi Amor" or "Cariño" during your purchase, it's an endearing habit. Like when a server at a diner calls you honey or sweetheart. If you want a place to grab some grub for breakfast or lunch that never disappoints, fills your belly and gets you on your way quick, then this is the spot for you. This is a great little gem. We had the breakfast toast "sandwiches". Inexpensive and very good. They did mess up on my wife's by putting on the wrong cheese selection. Instead of taking ownership they just said that the cheese was right (white cheese vs Swiss). Anyway, that aside food was good. We bought some pastries and croquettas to go. They have 2 small tables inside and a few outside in case you want to stay and eat. The music was a little loud inside so having a conversation was difficult. The staff member at the counter was friendly and attentive. Overall I gave them 4 stars because of the food and value. Next time I go I will write another review and address any shortfalls from this trip. read more

So disappointing service. We ordered a Quinceañera cake from this bakery, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. When we picked up the cake, the staff (Liz) asked if we were traveling far. After we mentioned we were heading to Fletcher, she exchanged a concerned look with another employee. That should have been our first red flag. The cake was placed in our SUV in a very basic cake box. We drove cautiously and slowly, but halfway through our trip the cake collapsed. When we tried to recover it, the entire structure fell apart. This was a three-tier cake with absolutely no internal support--something any professional bakery should know is essential for safe transport. When we returned to the bakery to ask for help, the staff told us there was nothing they could do (with attitude) because the "decorator" was unavailable. Instead of offering a solution they simply gave us her number. We called multiple times, but she never answered. For such an important occasion, this was not only a failure in craftsmanship but also in customer service. The lack of support and the lack of accountability from the bakery left us with a ruined cake and a very frustrating experience. We were not looking for a free cake, we were looking for a bit of help, even an offer of another cake we could buy as this was for a Quinceañera! We went to a different bakery to get a second cake, and when we showed them pictures of the ruined one, they not only helped us but also mentioned that a cake of that size should have had internal support. Edit: A TEXT was received from the staff stating this was OUR fault because we didn't requested delivery service and how they had never had an issue like this with their other cakes... Sorry but the only things I could eat were the bread, lettuce, tomato, ham and pork. The chicken was something out of a can that seemed to have gone bad. The queso flan is not made right. See picture for soup like texture with chunks of cream cheese. Seriously I love the service but without good food, good service will only go so far. This is a modest Uruguayan bakery serving up some delectable treats. The baked goods aren't the only sweet thing there, the ladies that work there are so nice and cordial. The bakery is housed between a few other ethnic outlets. Parking can be a bit chaotic at times but I have never not found a spot in the afternoon. There are plenty of breads, pastries, and sweet confections to choose from. I like that you can take home a loaf or two of bread and some individual-sized flans. There are also some specialty items and well as baking supplies. In addition, there are hot food items for sale such as sandwiches and sides which I have not tried. There is a hot box with empanadas and other small handheld foods as well. I find the prices to be very reasonable. Their alfajores are my jam. I think I am addicted. Sandwiches to snacks, coffee to fruit smoothies el Coqui was singing my song. We shared a tripleta sandwich. They don't call it a tripleta for no reason-- it's big. It's full of meat, lettuce and tomato. She toasted and gently pressed it to perfection. El papá rellena was as Big as a baseball and well worth the carbs. Found this place through looking for a bakery that was close to work. They open early so very convenient since I have to be at work at 7:30am. Walked in around 7:15 and no wait. Greeted quickly and made it out quick spending only $5 for 3 yummy pastries. They not only have pasty but also have sandwiches and breakfast items, croquettes and so many other things. You can tell that the items are baked fresh daily. The croissant I got for myself was stuffed with cream cheese. The pastry was so soft and flaky and wasn't overloaded with the cream cheese. This is a great little authentic Latin bakery! They have everything's from guava and cheese pastries to tres leches cake and even flan! The lady working at the counter is super nice and packages everything well. It's located in a pretty nondescript strip mall that may seem a bit sketch but look engine that and give this place a try. I wasn't planning on stopping by here today, but the place I wanted to go to was closed. So I was really glad this place was open. The treats I had were so fresh and tasty! I enjoyed my tres leches cake but the guava pastry and coconut flan were phenomenal. She had even included a spoon in my to go order though I didn't ask for one which I thought was nice. This is a 50-50. The Cuban was fresh, but for Tampa I found it to be quite pedestrian and forgettable. The bread was fresh, meat, cheese and toppings were meager. Basically it was mostly bread. Okay before you say it, yes I like my Cubans cold, not pressed...hold the boo's. It is a plain, basic Cuban, like so many in Tampa, on a scale of 1-10, I would give it a basic 5, making it just a plain Jane. I am really disappointed to have discovered this location, only to be let down. I need to add that as Cuban's go in Tampa, it was on the high price side, for what you get. On the plus side I think the bakery must be great. I bought a Cuban version of a US eclair. Golly Miss Molly was this delicious. Flaky fresh puff pastry filled with thick and full bodied vanilla cream, topped with a nice layer of yummy dark chocolate. It was fashioned to look like a spiral. Gorgeous to look at and even better to eat. I will be back for the bakery, but I will leave sandwiches to other locations in Tampa. Bottom line definitely go to the bakery, but not for lunch. What's a girl to do? The task of finding a perfect Cuban is an difficult task to undertake, but somebody has to do it. read more
