This is a local spot my boyfriend comes to with his family so he bought me here for a date night. Food couldn't have been better! We got there pretty late and they still chose to seat us without a problem. In respect of their time we ordered our appetizers (fried calamari) yum, (baked goat cheese) yum, our entrees & our drinks as soon as our waitress came up just so staff didn't stay late bc of us. There were also other patrons there btw. I had the chicken limon, it was ahhh mazing. Boyfriend had the chicken parm, also good. Drinks were good also. Over 12 years later I got dragged to this place again having blanked it from my memory. It's frozen in time. Same meh service, same horrible food. I got the lake perch special. It was without a doubt the worst fried fish entree I have ever had in my lifetime. Soggy, tasteless breading over a tiny overcooked piece of fish that I seriously doubt was perch. Balagio is one of my favorite restaurants. We always sit at the bar because we love Christy and her excellent service and attentiveness. Food is consistently good with generous portions. Tonight I had the stuffed dates for an appetizer and butternut squash ravioli for my entree. Both were on the weekly special menu. The bacon-wrapped dates were stuffed with a whole almond and covered in a blue cheese sauce. They were on a spring mix salad. Great mix of sweet and savory. The ravioli were cooked perfectly. Hadn't been here in a while. But it has always been a preset solid restaurant. My daughter's school has a agreement with the restaurant that every Wednesday any students that eats lunch or dinner here they donate a certain percentage to the school. It's called " no cook Wednesday " Anyway...the restaurant is huge with plenty of parking. We were sat down right away. Our server Lori was very good. All of the appetizers were amazing and the entrees were just as amazing! I forgot to take pics of the appetizers. We order the baked goat cheese and it was delicious. Eggplant Parmesan was very good. We started out with Marci's Great Customer Service, the smiles were genuine and the professionalism was golden!!!! Our Hors d'oeurves were exceptional, we tried the Roasted Lemon Crusted Shrimp which was seasoned so well, those plump buttery lemon kissed treats brought instant smiles of approval to the table. The Calamari had just the right crisp coating, it settled on your tongue like a perfect pillow, it wasnt chewy or over cooked, in fact I could kiss the cook for getting this 100% right!!! We love our Calamari!!! We had to restrain ourselves with the warm toasty bread and Oil to save room for the main course. But first soup and salad, the Hubby had the Chicken Rice soup which was fresh and we believed it was homemade! The salad had little treasures of cherry tomato, garbanzo beans and cucumber nestled in the spring mix with house Italian Dressing and sprinkles of Parmesan !!!! Ok finally the main event, the Hubby had Country Style Rigatoni, which was filed with Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, tomatoes, and red peppers blended with a lip smacking good Garlic Cream Sauce!!!! Today was a birthday celebration for hubby even though the weather was terrible! We decided to go to Balagio because it was close. What a nice, cozy, and quaint restaurant. We were greeted and seated by the window. We had a very nice waitress and the wine and beer were delish. We ordered the meat lasagna with the Caesar salad and my husband ordered the meatloaf which was a Thursday special. Our meals were excellent. Everything was hot, fresh, and flavorful. It's been years since I've been here. It's hubby's special day, and I made reservations. First, I'm not a huge Italian cuisine fan. However, what's nice about Balagio is there is something for every palette. For an appetizer, I sampled a slice of hot bread with shrimp in garlic lemon sauce. Delicious! I sipped a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and enjoyed the jovial atmosphere. Our server, Angela, was delightful! She was efficient and friendly and seemed to genuinely love her job. Her enthusiasm was contagious. I couldn't help but smile every time she approached our table. I ordered the grilled salmon and pear salad. Both items were good, but the salad needed more pizzazz! I know that sounds strange but it just didn't taste special. I probably could have made it at home. I was expecting something a bit fancier considering the ambiance of the restaurant. Anyway, I didn't order dessert. Instead, I ordered another glass of wine while watching my husband enjoy his meal. Delicious! We shared the Goat Cheese Appetizer which has a great richness with a perfect marinara and the surprise of black olives. The Panko Shrimp was super crunchy and delightful. I had the Pappardelle Ragu which was really meaty, and the pasta was perfect. I had to stop a quarter way through because I was very interested in a Crème Brûlée, which did not NEED whipped cream but I enjoyed anyway. Husband had a Chocolate Mousse Cake that was outstanding. Where we live in Colorado the Italian food often comes with a thick sweet tomato sauce that has entirely turned us off of trying any more local places. Visiting family in Chicago we asked for a good Italian restaurant with the proper tomato sauce. They suggested Balagio and it totally hit the mark. We started with the calamari and eggplant. The calamari had nice big pieces of squid and the sauce was light and a perfect pairing. The eggplant was also good enough that I would order that and garlic bread next time for my whole meal. For my main I opted for the cavatelli pasta and the hubs went with a piece of lasagna. Both were very very good. My pasta was light yet chewy and I asked for marinara over the bolognase. The lasagna was rich and meaty and again covered in a perfect representation of proper tomato sauce. Rounding out the meal was a huge plate of garlic bread. I feel badly about giving such a low review, but my experience at Balagio has not been great. Mostly, because there isn't much to justify the overpriced menu items. The decoration is pretty spot-on. The restaurant manages to appear classy, tasteful, and a little more "fancy" than I'm used to. The fact they serve you bread with olive oil is a nice touch, but it's hard to explain why that feels fancier than normal. Maybe it just feels fancier than Red Lobster's cheddar biscuits because it requires more affirmative effort on your part to squeeze out the oil, then soak it up with the bread. But the overall feel of the place is that they are attempting to overcharge you because they are expensive. One of those self-fulfilling prophecies; that they are expensive because they are expensive. I got a New York strip steak, which is one of their most expensive menu items. ... It was fine? There was nothing wrong with it, but there was no reason for the price-gouging. Also, because of the "fancy" decor, it can make you feel uncomfortable to go there on a casual date night. In the back of your mind you wonder if you should have dressed up more, even if it is just you and your date in a mostly empty restaurant. read more

The cocktails were decent and a hostess Mikayla was very attentive and kept checking on our table. She was great. Toward the Merle of the meal we started feeling rushed, staff kept asking us if they pack our food to go, and frantically filling our water, I hope it wasn't something I said.
