I came with a Gilt City voucher, so quality may have been compromised because I was using a deal instead of paying full-price for services. HAIR COLOR / BALAYAGE: Gretchen They cut my hair bluntly before coloring, knowing that I wanted a good couple of inches cut off my hair. I was glad that I was going to be keeping most of the color on my tips. To start, I brought pictures to make sure that the hair color I wanted could be achieved. I had asked for more highlights in the front that was sewn in towards the back gradually, and an ombre that went from darker up top to lighter on bottom. I wanted to get to a really light brown/blonde, since I already had highlights, and she said "she couldn't get that light." My friends have gone to high-end salons where stylists were able to oblige when they asked for black to light blonde. If you cannot reach this color, you are probably not that great of a colorist. Also, she put so many streaks in front that were really blunt, with basically no highlights in the back. CUT: Marcus He was so friendly. So calm. Such a great voice. I thought everything was going great with my haircut while he was snipping away. But I didn't really realize how he cut my hair until I showered the next day. The cut was unbelievably blunt, with layers that were literally staircases. I asked for subtle layers that framed my face, but instead the cut was very jagged. I couldn't tell what my hair looked like right after I left the salon because they had immediately styled my hair upon blow drying my hair. Although I thought I liked it, I realized that they covered up their mistakes by curling my hair and making my hair look better than it actually was. read more

I got my haircut here by Bruno. He was a lovely guy, and I can't fault him on friendliness; But I actually cried afterwards with what he did to my hair. I am writing this review only because every time I look in the mirror I am reminded by what a mistake it was to come here. This is, hands down, the worst haircut I have ever had. I started by telling him how much I love my long hair and I just wanted the dead ends gone, and a bit more to frame my face. He told me he would cut off 3 inches tops. I said just to make sure the crispy ends were gone (he took this as cut more?? I am not sure but maybe this is where I went wrong...). Then he decided to give me layers, which I was fine with a little. Suddenly he was chopping ridiculous, 6 inch+ pieces of hair. I asked what he was doing and he told me I obviously didn't understand layers and the length coming off didn't count because it was layering. I didn't want ridiculous layers. I wanted to wear my hair forward hanging down past my chest or have it hang gracefully down my back. Now it looks like I took scissors to it in random spots and doesn't even reach the top of my bra. Not only is my hair no longer long and beautiful, I look at best like a school girl and at worst like a bland, tasteless librarian. My hair is ruined and I have spent the last 2 weeks researching ways to make it grow faster. I even went and got it Brazilian treated to try and cover up the fact that the layers completely didn't match my wavy hair. The guy that did that commented on how uneven my hair is in the back - one side has layers an inch or so shorter than the other. The worst part is it ended with him trying to schedule me a second appointment to come back in a few months. I tried to be friendly and told him I'd figure out my schedule, but mostly I just wasn't even sure what to think of my hair. It was only later that I realized how much damage he has done and how much was ruined. If you are coming for highlights, I cannot comment. But I truly wish I could ask for my money back. read more

If you're looking to brighten up your look with some highlights, it's time to acquaint yourself with the increasingly popular balayage highlight technique. I have been a friend and client of Nancy Braun since the late 90's so I am always nervous to have color done with anyone else. That's until I met Kristina. Amazing, just amazing. She like Nancy creates beautiful and natural but stunningly noticeable color using the balayage technique. Balayage, which is also called "hair painting," creates the most natural-looking results because the colorist paints on the highlights by hand, and can scatter them throughout your hair in a more truly "sunkissed" and haphazard pattern. In my opinion, when using foils, you work row by row, which makes the highlight pattern look very linear and grid-like. With balayage, you have more flexibility on where you want to place the highlights so the resulting pattern can look more natural. It also has another added benefit: Longer lasting results. The grow out at the roots isn't as obvious, you can wait a litter longer before getting a touch up. Final piece of advice, which I was not aware of... It takes 72 hours for the cuticle of your hair to close after its been opened during a coloring process, so try to wait that long before shampooing. You can rinse and condition your hair, but don't wash it with shampoo. Use a dry shampoo if needed. Okay! Lastly I must mention, Marcus! He cut my hair several days before my balayage with Kristina and I have to say he is a hair genius and I've known a few. He understood exactly what I wanted but made suggestions that worked for my hair type. The cut was the basis for this beautiful color and I'm thrilled (and a bit picky about my hair)....overall, 5 *****! read more

Here's the bottom line--Nancy Braun is the owner and has been coloring my hair for over 10 years. She rocks! People are always asking where I get my hair done. I first heard about her from a publicist who repped a lot of celebrities whose hair she did that I liked, which I don't need to name because the bottom line is she is the best. She recently opened her own salon on Civic Center Drive and it's beautiful. It's modern and chic yet you feel like you're getting your hair done at home. Her fellow employees, Sasha--an amazing hairstylist and Kristina--another amazing colorist, also are the best at what they do. So, this has been a long overdue review. This is now my second visit to Gretchen here at Balayage and I couldn't be happier with my hair color!! Being blonde, I feel like I don't trust a lot of stylists with my highlights and now I am done with the full foils. I am a convert to a true 'Balayage babe' because it's just looks so natural. I can also go longer in between vista, which is great because I tend to be low-maintenance and it saves me money. On the day of my appointment I was a nervous wreck and not really knowing what I wanted to do or to expect. And I am someone who has been living in LA for many years, NY prior to that, and have spent some serious money trying many salons and many stylists. Not only is he an OCD girl's dream in his meticulousness with the scissors, but he loves what he does and understands hair in such a way that you can't help but leave his chair looking and feeling amazing. This first time customer is hooked! I've been getting highlights for years at a different salon and was craving a change. Kristina welcomed me once I arrived and I begun to tell her what I was looking for. She recommended balayage and she walked me through the entire process. I love Balayage by Nancy Braun! The staff is so friendly and talented and Nancy is so sweet and personable! I've been going to Gretchen for years and I LOVE her!! Gretchen is a professional and she's absolutely amazing with color! I recommend all of my friends to her, regardless of their hair type or color because she knows what she's doing and I TRUST HER! Unlike many colorists, walking into the salon you may not be sure exactly how you're going to walk out and whether or not you'll be happy with it, but with Gretchen I am always ecstatic about my color. I always leave happier than when I came in. Whether you know exactly what you want, you're not completely sure how describe what you want, or you don't know what you want but you know you need a change to your color, Gretchen nails it! The first time I sat in her chair, I told her, "I don't know what to do with it, but please make it look good." She gave me ombre underneath and highlights on top and I can't tell you how many compliments I got! Another time I came in and told her I needed my blonde to be bright, but very natural. I didn't want too much blonde and I wanted dimension. She nailed it again. I am natural blonde, but always need maintenance to keep it looking vibrant and healthy.
