My son and I stopped by Balboa subs to grab a quick lunch. He had a minimum day at school and got to pick where we eat. So he decided on Balboa Subs. What a great choice he made. We ordered the pastrami and boy did it hit the spot. The meat was plentiful, the bread was amazingly fresh and the size was more than what the two of us could eat. So we were going off roading on a Sunday, and on the way decided we needed to get something to eat- and what's better to take for a lunch on the hill than sandwiches? We were passing through the valley and so I pulled up Yelp to search for sandwiches, and when a bunch of places popped up I thought this was going to be easy. It wasn't, because apparently people in the valley don't eat sandwiches on Sundays... I started with the closest shops that had good ratings and one after another they were closed!!! Seriously I went through at least 10 sandwich places around 1pm on a Sunday until I found this place! I'm not mad about it though because Balboa Sub shop was pretty good! It's a really tiny shop at the end of a strip mall that's away from the street so even with gps we had a little trouble seeing it. When you walk in the first thing you notice is it really smells like a nice sub shop- not like a Subway where it smells like weird chemical bread. The subs are reasonably priced and there was a good variety, however, ask if there is more to the menu because there was an electronic add showing more than the paper menu. The taste was clean and fresh. The meat tasted fresh and not stored out all day. The topping also tasted clean and fresh not hard and dry like some places. I think what really tied it together was the bread! It was really nice bread with good texture. The only knock I have on this place was the hot sauce. Thankfully I got mine on the side but my buddy had it put on his sandwich. When we got to the top of the mountain it was absolutely freezing and our plan to have sandwiches on the side of the mountain faded and we hid in the truck to eat our lunch. However as soon as we opened or sandwiches my buddies was such a mess of hot sauce we had to eat outside freezing in the cold because the hot sauce dripped everywhere. This hole in the wall place serves some pretty good sandwiches. It's def a mom and pop joint with a homemade taste that is much better than your average chain sandwich shop. The guy behind the counter is pretty cool and makes the subs to your order. Price is pretty comparable to other places and service is pretty quick except during lunch/rush hours. Only reason why it doesn't get a full five stars (4.5) is I'd like a little more meat in the sub, but that doesn't take away the great taste. Parking in the immediate lot in front of the shop can be a tad tedious as its a little narrow so I'd recommending parking in the joined lot with Rite Aide and take a few more steps over the concrete median. read more

Just had the BBQ Brisket and the Tri Tip sandwiches, which are only available on Saturdays. The meat was smoked in the parking lot (?!?). My car nearly plowed into the smoker when I parked ;-) In both cases, the meat was very tender, lean and extremely tasty. The Tri Tip in particular was the best I've ever had anywhere at any price. The brisket was not smothered in BBQ sauce as is usually the case (just marinated?), but I really liked it as well. Was not allowed to take my electric scooter inside for a take out order. If this establishment was a Michelin starred restaurant or even a sit-down restaurant, I would not have complained at my denial of services. No other sandwich shop has ever refused me for taking my small electric scooter inside. My review is for the potential customer, not the owner. I've had chained bikes stolen in the area. I could not leave my electric scooter outside safely, and the owner was simply rude by my account. HE COULD HAVE EASILY ASKED ME TO CARRY IT INSTEAD. What if I had been a wheelchair user who had ridden in from outside? You have to mop the floor everyday in either scenario. Lazy owners who do not wish to keep tidy is what is wrong with America; Now, I reiterate, the food is probably really good, but I'll never know. My coworker just told me about this spot and I did not bring lunch today so, WTH, let me try this place out and its literally a shake of a lambs tail from my job. I called and placed my order, bacon, turkey and swiss small sub and the guys that answered said it will be ready in 10mins and he asked if I wanted it spicey and I said no but got it on the side. My sub was amazing, lotsa turkey and nice crispy piece of bacon and you can taste the mustard and tomatoes and swiss come through. It was delish and for a small sub, it was pretty BIG! The whole deal, sandwich, chips and can of soda = $10 bucks. I ate half the sub and tried to save the other half but ended up eating the rest a 1/2 hr later. What the HELL???? I went in here looking to contract with a place for 75 sandwiches every weekend for the next 6 weeks, and if it works out, the same arrangement every spring. It was lunch time, and I was the ONLY person in there, (?) so, I figured the guy (who oddly didn't smile, or even say hello when I came in, just stared at me with his pen & pad), had a minute to talk. I asked two questions about the menu, and the kind of meat they used, because it's for a kids sports team, that are very health conscious, and this guy was so UNBELIEVABLY RUDE AND CONDESCENDING, that I couldn't't take it, and walked out! .......My only question is WHY?????? And HOW he has ANY customers at ALL??? VERY strange behavior, from a man who said who was the owner!! People should really be careful who they are mean to, cuz' this could have been a nice little gig for him, in addition to a possible NEW group of customers! I was far from home in Northridge looking for what I thought would be a liquor store but, unfortunately, turned out to be a bar in this mini mall on Balboa. I turn to get in my car, and spot Balboa Subs, the last in a line of half a dozen businesses and not the most attractive exterior sign. Just a small little shop. But I'm a sucker for submarine sandos so I decided to stick my head inside this small restaurant. Inside? Not much to look at. A half dozen tables, a TV showing That 70s Show which I found amusing because I directed a film starring the actor who plays "Red" on the show, and BALBOA SUBMARINES on the wall. But there was a couple that had been there before and they just ordered and it sounded good and the menu looked good. Funny, because I wasn't particularly hungry, but when the one lovely young and cute girl with all the tattoos, purplish hair and braces smiled and explained some local favorites, I figured, let's give it a go. Chantal, fast, hardworking and organized, let me substitute hard salami into my sandwich for ham for only $1 and I left with my lunch and dinner, a 10" turkey and salami and cheese sando, cut in half, one for each meal. Damn, those sandwich halves were tasty! I respected that the sandwich was layered up well, not overly sogged or dressed, and came with a really zingy hot sauce on the side. I'm a filmmaker and work all around town and I tried my damndest to save the second sandwich for dinner but I kept nibbling on it throughout the day. I'm telling you, I want to steal this little sandwicher princess Chantal from there and get her her own sub shop closer to me here in Hollywood!
