The owner and his mother are absolutely lovely people. I brought my pearl necklace in to be repaired/restrung. It was done with beautiful precision, all the while educating me on pearls and the different types, shapes, clarity, etc. The owner had me photograph and go over the amount of pearls on the string to avoid any confusion upon pick up. The store is well organized and the process was explained perfectly. The shop itself has a variety of jewelry, new and antique. It's located in downtown Sierra Madre in our charming little shopping corner. It's hard to find honest, good jewelers with an eye for detail these days. He's replaced a couple of quartz watch batteries for me, which, every time, I think, that's a little much for the part and labor," but I don't kind supporting a local small business. The grind is when I first went in there, the son went on and on about what a fanatic watch guy he was. A couple years later I brought him an old quartz watch that would've cost more to fix than it was worth (couple hundred bucks) and he turned down the job. Because it's a deeply sentimental piece I ended up getting it fixed elsewhere. The reveal, however, and why I won't be going back, is when I took that watch elsewhere for repair is that he'd pulled the battery he'd replaced the year before and the caseback was loose. I had a Rolex submariner that I've owned since 2003. A few years ago it stopped and I visited Berg. He opened my watch in front of me and the internals parts were bad. I literally saw "dust" but it was grinded parts. Basically I was forcing my watch to wind when I should have visited a jeweler to diagnose why my watch wouldn't hold a wind. Basically Berg rebuilt my rolex and it cost me $2k which was my fault for 2 reasons, never serviced my Rolex since 2003 and should have visited a watch smith as soon as the problem showed up. Fast forward 2 years later, my watch stopped WINDING again SO I went to see Berg immediately. He opened my watch and he couldn't really tell what was wrong so he took my watch to take it apart. Bottomline, he spent a few hrs of his own time taking apart my watch and fixed it without charging me. Berg and his mom are hard working business owners! I hope everyone gives Berg a try. Berj is a true craftsman. I went to him on a friends recommendation. Our ten year wedding anniversary is coming up and my wife wants an exact copy of the diamond band I gave to her when we got married. After I showed Berj the ring he told me that he can make one exactly like it and his quote was more than fair. I had to leave my wife's original ring with him and he told me that it will take about four weeks top make the ring but he would call me in about two weeks with an update. I was on a business trip and the diamond in my (vintage, family heirloom) engagement ring fell out of the setting. Thankfully, I was able to find it. When I returned, I relied on Yelp reviews to help me find a solid jeweler in the area and was led to Berj. He quoted a fair price and even discovered some damage to the diamond where the prongs had worn out. He was able to reset it, hide the damaged parts with new prongs and event refurbished the worn Milgrain detailing (which I didn't even know existed prior to bringing it in). Beyond that, he gave me a quick history lesson about the origin of the band and the diamond. Today, I brought in another ring to be cleaned and re-shaped (it was bent from wear) and to have a ring guard put on my engagement ring. I dropped both off and the work was done in about an hour and for a more than fair price. It's clear the Berj is passionate about his work and that he and the rest of the staff at Baldwin Jewelers pride themselves on great customer service. The employees here are very relaxed and will show you everything and are very patient and will answer all your questions. Be aware that once you're in there, you'll want to buy everything! They have a few nice cases in the center of the store with really unique stones and jewelry. My stepmom bought a rare turquoise ring called Crazy Horse Turquoise from Arizona. Took my Rolex in due to a lost bezel. I was told that pictures of serial number had to be emailed to Rolex to obtain the part. Upon review of the crystal, the crystal was not damaged. Today while having my Rolex looked at Bobs Watches in Westminster, the bezel was deemed an aftermarket accessory, not Rolex, as represented. Upon further review the bezel did not fit the watch and the crystal was chipped in multiple places due to incorrect installation and non Rolex parts being used. Keep in mind, U was charged almost $500 for a $20 reproduction part. Absolutely disgusted. I am a resident of Sierra Madre and have your voicemails, my debit card transaction. Ring a bell now?? I am calling BS on you. You even claimed that my watch needed a $500 service or it would start damaging the pieces. Thank god i did not let you touch it. So much for being an authorized repair place for Rolex. STAY AWAY. Im actually going to touch base with Rolex to let them know. Would never send anyone to you. Will make sure that I spread the word. So, you claim you never serviced my watch? I now have it in writing and can go to Chase, right next door to you, and tell them you placed a false charge in my account. Are you really serious? Just admit that you dont know what the heck you are doing and move on. But expect a chargeback based on your own comment. You must be charging peoples cards for services not rendered. I only gave them one star because that is the lowest rating. Zero would be generous. I went in to have some jewelry appraised. I had NOT noticed the sign stating that he bought gold. He started by instantly insulting and criticizing the quality of my jewelry, then offered to buy it, generously. He needed gold and I needed the money, so he was doing me a favor. He also told me that gold prices had dropped by 33% in the last week and were continuing to fall. I looked it up online later - it was a lie. One of the pieces was European, stamped 750 Italy, indicating it was 18k. He claimed he had never seen the mark, shaking his head trying to indicate it was a worthless piece. Any jeweler should know that stamp!!! Italy is famous for it's gold jewelry. I told him it was 18k Italian gold. He told me my class ring was filled with concrete and also told me my other pieces were filled with other metals ,etc. He offered me about $250 for a full lot of jewelry. I later received a higher offer ($260) for just ONE of the pieces, more than he offered for all of it. Very high pressure, too, so I got myself out of there. Update - He offered me $252 or $232 for 11 grams of 18k gold, and 12 grams of 14k gold. He offered me $48 for 5 oz of 99.9% silver, which is worth about $28 per oz ($140) gross, indicating a 66% discount. I was offered $360-$384 just for the 11 grams of 18k gold this morning (25% discount - much more appropriate). DON'T SELL YOUR JEWELRY TO THIS GUY!!! read more
