The restaurant is small in a little shopping center which I almost passed.The menu is smaller than I expected but has a nice variety of items I've never tried. My friend got the goulash and I had the Turkish steak sandwich. Everything was well seasoned and fresh. My bread was tough and my meal didnt come with any sides which was a downfall but the food itself was good . I will be back to try more items and maybe the coffee. read more

I am so excited to have "discovered" this restaurant. The food was excellent, from the perfectly seasoned chicken paprikash to the crunchy veggies in the feta salad. Nothing elaborate inside with cheap chairs, minimal decorations, a small bar, but the food was a delight! Sanitizer at the door, staff was nice and wore masks. We tried the meat burek and cheese burek (technically we ordered spinach and cheese but i didn't realize it until I opened our takeout box at home) with the roasted red pepper sauce aka ajvar on the side. The puff pastry was a bit burned but still flakey and buttery, and I was surprised with how much we loved the sweet but subtle cheese filling. The meat was crumbley but not too dry with herbed flavor. The ajvar they made should be sold by the bucket! Robust roasted flavors with garlic and a rich brilliant red color. My husband isn't a saucy guy but he polished off that side of ajvar! Would definitely go back to try other items, and I would recommend eating there for something different. read more

Thur night at 6pm, not busy at all. Small, cozy and quiet. Sat right down and were taken care of promptly by very friendly staff. Wow! Amazing Eastern European food. The Hungarian Goulash was terrific and the chicken kebab with grilled vegetables was so very flavorful. The fried cheese appetizer was yummy. I love feta and fried feta is just over the top. My wife and I went early for lunch at this small, delightful nearly hidden restaurant. It's a delicious combination of various Balkan cuisine. Many of the items will look unfamiliar to you on the menu. It seems exotic but, to an American palate, it will be just right. You can't beat the combination of fantastic bread, perfectly seasoned meat and accompanying sides. I had the Balkan Schnitzel which was a huge, perfectly cooked portion on top of their homemade bread. It was divine. My wife had the traditional cevapi (basically little sausages inside of the bread). We split the Spartak torte for dessert and I also had a Turkish coffee... Jet fuel! I love it. If I lived closer, I would eat here weekly. The wait staff and owner are very patient and they explain things very well. Please try this wonderful place soon and often. read more

This review comes more as a place-holder, I think, because I cannot honestly claim I've had the best this place has to offer having only ordered takeout. The flavors are solid, but coming in styrofoam boxes, things get a tad damp, often as not, and I was particularly disappointed that the apple pastry was cold and soggy. Two trips this week and have another planned for next. Salad, fried Turkish cheese, and the grilled platter with potatoes were all delicious. Every piece of meat (chicken, steak, two different kinds of sausage, and veal) and the veggies were all grilled to perfection and beautifully seasoned. My spouse and I ordered delivery from Balkan Restaurant while staying at the nearby Embassy Suites for a business meeting. Short story: DELICIOUS. More details: We ordered several appetizers (falafel, fried cheese, burek with spinach and cheese) and the grilled platter with a side of cabbage salad to share. Everything was well seasoned and well cooked. The spinach burek in particular was marvelous. The grilled platter included a ton of food, and the various meats and veggies were all cooked just right. The only disappointing item was the falafel; I think it lost its crunch during the delivery process. Otherwise, we were totally satisfied. My last review was rather brief but I wanted to update it by saying that I continue to wholeheartedly endorse this restaurant. The food is impeccable. The wine and beer selections are impeccable. The people are absolutely lovely - they remember their customers and their preferences. It feels like you were having dinner with your friend from Eastern Europe and their grandmother is cooking. Tried out Balkan with a LivingSocial deal and been meaning to with its location on Patterson nearby my house. The space is pretty small with some TVs and a bar toward the back. Tables are standard, a little wobbly at times. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about all of the dishes. We started with a meat pastry, which was one of the best pastries I've ever had. The bread they serve too is light and fluffy with a nice dipping sauce that I couldn't stop eating! I ordered the mixed kebobs with chicken and beef and the portion was generous! It was served with cabbage salad and grilled veggies, both of which I enjoyed more than I thought. My husband got the goulash, which he enjoyed too but he really wanted my kebobs more. We tried the Burke (pastry) with spinach and cheese, and it was really delicious. And more bready than puff pastry, but great crisp outside and delicious filling. We also have the special appetizer, which was the Ajvar with feta cheese. Sort of a dip/ spread with peppers and eggplant and a healthy amount of feta. Served with their delicious Lepinja bread. The Hungarian goulash was absolutely fantastic, with a terrific depth of flavor and tremendously tender chunks of beef. I did not try my friend's schnitzel, though she said it was delicious. The cabbage salad was out of this world, and we could've eaten tons more of that, and the fries were far beyond our expectations. Would definitely recommend, though do note that they no longer sell alcohol. So if you're going thinking you will enjoy some wine with your meal, make sure you have it with you. Got a Groupon voucher and we ordered sandwiches on that super fresh and yummy bread they have. Mine was an agnus beef with grilled veggies that they serve only at lunchtme. I swear it tasted like filet mignon. They even made it a perfect medium rare like I ordered. The zucchini and onions and peppers with it were also wonderful!! I wish they served beer, since that would have been a perfect accompaniment. Instead I ordered a delicious tea with lemon. I was trying to keep from putting sugar in it and it tasted great without any sugar at all. My friend got what looked like a giant hamburger on that same roll/bread. He loved it. We both ordered dessert. I had the new layered torte and he had the apple strudel. Neither was worth the calories or money. Their strudel is still soggy, like in my old review. read more

Balkan. Is. Awesome. Near Patterson and Parham, it is hidden away right next to a papa johns. You could easily drive by this place and not see it. It doesn't look like that big of a place from the outside but it does have a decent amount of seating. There is a bar towards the back of the restaurant that you can sit at as well. Service is friendly and can recommend dishes if you have trouble deciding what you want. The bread they serve is really good. If you don't mind trying new stuff, you'll have lots of choices. But if you want to play it safe, the gyro is excellent. The fried cheese is also great. I ordered it to split with my friend who I later found out doesn't eat cheese... oh well more for me. If you go for lunch get the shish kebab sandwich. One of the best things they have on the menu. Definitely recommend that you give this place a shot. read more

I had never tried this even though it was like a walking distance from where I live. Was reading some reviews on yelp the other day and saw this one had got some good reviews so though of trying it now. Well, the reviews didn't lie and the restaurant food is pretty amazing. The restaurant is very small but still maintains some good ambiance. They don't have a big menu....very limited to choose from. But I guess all in the menu should be good. I tried the Kebab platter and some fried cheese (Akii or something...don't rememebr the exact name) and both were amazing. The Balkan potatoes that came as a side was the best of all. Please try this side for sure. Will definitely recommend to friends and will not be on my regular to go list as well. :) read more

The imaginatively named Balkan Restaurant is probably my favorite restaurant in the West End. First and foremost, the food is delicious. If you've never had Balkan food (and I hadn't before I came here), it's hearty, heavy, seasoned but not spicy, and very meat-centric. The chicken paprikash and the Hungarian goulash are my favorites, but I've never been disappointed with anything I've gotten here. The portions are reasonable -- satisfying but not too much. There's a pretty good selection of Eastern European beers, and the prices aren't too bad at all. The decor is pleasant if not terribly striking, and the service is alway fast and friendly -- I've come here on my lunch break a couple times and gotten back before my hour was up. My only complaints (and I'll readily acknowledge these are minor and nit-picky) are the boring name and the fact that some of the food and most of the beer are not Balkan per se: Hungary isn't part of the Balkans, and neither are some of the countries where the beer comes from (Poland and Ukraine for example). See? Minor and nit-picky. Honestly though, I'm glad I can get food and beer from this part of the world in Richmond. And I'm glad the far West End has such a distinctive restaurant. read more

I met up with a friend yesterday for lunch at the Balkan Restaurant because he had a groupon. He had been here a couple times before (including one earlier this week already) and this was my first time at the establishment. The restaurant size is fairly large and the decor was simple. My friend and I decided to split a dinner entree, the mixed meat platter with french fries. Although our food took a while to come out, our portion size was huge: our meat platter came out with sausage links, chicken, beef, a decent side of veggies, fries, and a side of their bread. We had to ask for the cream cheese side that should come with the bread but it was worth the wait. The meats were all well seasoned, our fries were extremely crispy, and the bread was nice and warm. After stuffing our faces, we still had left overs to take home! I was extremely impressed with the food that as soon as I got home I bought a groupon to the restaurant and I can't wait to go back! First you need to know this is a small family-run place so don't be so picky about the level of service. The prices are ok and the food is mostly good. Went here for dinner with my co-workers. Everything we ordered was delicious. We ordered a lot of food between the four of us. My favorite was the Spinach Burek. Hand stretched puff pastry filled with your choice of meat, cheese, or spinach and cheese. I had the Hungarian Goulash. The meat was tender and the sauce had a nice spice with a slight sweetness to it. The bread called Lepinja was soft and chewy. Service was a little slow but the restaurant was busy and they were working hard. The owner did catch up though and came out to greet us before we left and explained that they were short staffed that day. My friend and I made the trek out Patterson for dinner. We started with the fried cheese. I had goulash; she had the stuffed cabbage rolls. I was most impressed, though, by the lepinja, which was chewy but light. I completely abandoned my manners to dip the bread in my goulash. I am giving three stars instead of four because everything was perfectly adequate, and the service was very good, but I did not think the food was especially remarkable. The goulash did not taste any different to me than a decent beef stew. The mashed potatoes accompanying the goulash were just mashed potatoes, nothing special. The best thing about the fried cheese was the avjar, a blend of red peppers and eggplant. We had the apple dessert and it was good, but again, nothing remarkable: puff pastry with soft apples and a nutty filling.
