We loved our 2-night stay here at Ballard Inn! There are currently 2 'hotels' in downtown Ballard: Ballard Inn & Hotel Ballard across the street. Both are in the heart of bustling Ballard Ave, where most of the restaurants, cafes, boutiques and bars are located. Ballard Inn is a small historic building, nicely repurposed to a hotel. Not all the rooms have a private bathroom; I phoned ahead to make sure we had our own! Our room had an exterior door directly to street access on Vernon. The room was nicely-appointed, clean & we felt safe. The cost included unlimited access to the beautiful Olympic Athletic Club, located across the street at the (substantially!) more expensive new Hotel Ballard. Air conditioning. we don't need any air conditioning! 1902 elegance unbesmirched by a window AC unit (probably not allowed by the historical society) we paid quite a bit more not to have our bathroom be down the hall. 201 was a Very elegant corner room up an unreasonable number of stairs. This is not for everyone... but if you want to go back in time this place will do it for you. I did have to laugh at the 1902 Elegance with 21st century amenities as it points out. the ice machine is located at hotel Ballard. another hotel a block away on the second floor of that hotel so you would only have to climb down 40 stairs across the street, walk up a block another hotel and go to the second floor to get some ice. ;-) I liked it though. coffee maker in the room. no breakfast provided, parking's 25 bucks. read more

Absolutely loved staying in this historic gem. Lovely room right in the middle of everything. Nice small lobby off the street to sit and visit with other guests and observed everything going on right outside the door. Our room had a bathroom in the room, but I believe some rooms had to use the bathroom down the hall. This morning we woke to the most amazing farmers market right outside our window. Lots of happy people out enjoying the sun with their baby strollers and dogs in tow. Highlight of our time here in Ballard. read more

The room was lovely, but the internet was broken. When I asked them to fix it they couldn't. They wouldn't offer compensation. As a clinician I needed a secure place for telehealth, and this was very disruptive. Who doesn't offer a compensation when a key amenity isn't offered? read more

People doing drugs to the point that the smell permeated into our room. We complained, and asked to be moved. They said they couldn't move us because other rooms available were more expensive and security didn't do anything. We checked out at 10pm to get another hotel and were denied a refund for that night. Stay at your own risk. If they had refunded our last night, in which we didn't even stay, then I wouldn't have to leave this review. :( read more

Check in at Hotel Ballard. Ballard Inn is the smaller partner. There's no normal front desk. But service is great when you figure that out. Free parking in a garage under Hotel Ballard, which is super cool in Seattle. Ballard Inn is small and darling. I got a large room with private bath. Just call and talk to someone so you know what you're getting. The decor and bedding are gorgeous. Yeah, there's street noise. You're in a super cool neighborhood so just go out! We saw a show at Tractor Tavern then stayed over here and went to brunch. It was charming and a great price. No, the 1900s building in Seattle does not have A/C. Seriously. read more

I wanted very much to like this hotel. Location is ideal but as others have commented, it is INCREDIBLY NOISY on a good night. On a bad night, when the room next door is occupied by a group of very drunk and disorderly young people, it is difficult to feel safe let alone sleep. Between 10pm and 1:30am on my first night at the Inn, I was kept awake by loud yelling and stomping and arguing outside my door and in their room. I called the front desk three times asking that they manage the situation. I did hear the night manager come over twice asking the guests to keep the noise down. On my last call around 1am, I was told the police were being called. I know this was probably an isolated event, but it was not handled well by the staff. No one reached out to me the next day to ask how I was, or to address the situation. I gave them one more day and then after no contact, I went to the Hotel Ballard desk to speak with management. When I explained to the young woman I am the guest in the room next door, she got a look of knowing on her face and told me they were expecting me to say something. When the manager did come out, I told her about my experience and asked for a discount on my stay. She replied they did everything they were required to do, which was evict the guests and never allow them back, and she was under no obligation to make it up to me. She denied my request. I worked in the service/hospitality industry for a long, long time and even if something was not necessarily my fault, I always made sure my clients left happy. A gesture of 20% off my bill (about $50) would have gone a long way to show me they care about their guests' experience and they take responsibility to make sure it is a positive one. A small discount would have extended good will and would have been the right thing to do. Instead I was dismissed and made to feel as if it was insulting of me to ask for such a thing. Poorly handled Ballard Inn. Very unprofessional. I can not recommend this as a reliable place to stay. read more

Our second stay here when visiting family that lives in Ballard, and each time we opted for a room with a private bath. The upstairs rooms are lovely but small, and I just do not like trotting down the hall for a bathroom and shower. The historic building has been lovingly restored, rooms are clean and tastefully decorated, with free wifi. The best part is the location. Dozens of restaurants within a block, shops and a Sunday farmers market on Ballard St. make for a nice stay in the area while costing much less than its sister hotel half a block away. read more

This boutique hotel is highly overrated. At around $250 a night it's way over priced for what it is. There is no reception at the actual location. You have to walk a short distance to the Ballard Hotel to check in. Only a few rooms have their own bathroom. The rest have to share a bathroom with other guests. I was careful to rent a room with a bathroom on the second floor to avoid the incessant street noise, but when I arrived I was informed my room on the second floor had a water leak. Three days later it was still not fixed. I had no choice but to take a room on the street level. This neighborhood is busy with bars and restaurants, so street noise is a big problem. It filters into the bottom floor rooms until about 1am. If that isn't bad enough delivery trucks start making noise at about 6am. My TV didn't get a third of the channels it was supposed to get. Needless to say I will not be staying here ever again. It ruined my trip to Seattle. read more

What a cool place! The customer service was top notch. Check-in isn't until 3pm, but I had a wedding at 4pm I needed to be ready for on my arrival day. The Ballard Inn staff were so helpful and accommodating. They agreed to call me as soon as my room was available and promised to make sure I was able to get dressed and ready for the event if, if per chance, I couldn't get in early. I was able to check in early with ample time to get dolled-up for the big affair. The entire property, including the shared "powder rooms" and showers are remarkably clean and tidy. The room was small, but space was utilized well, and it felt very much like some of the boutique hotels I've booked in Europe. The bed and bedding were very clean and comfortable. Down comforter and pillows and crisp clean white sheets. They will deliver a mini fridge to your room if you wish and fresh towels, water and makeup remover were always sent to my room within minutes of me asking. It was a little hot and no A/C made it difficult to do my hair and makeup during peak afternoon temperatures. It was very comfortable through the mornings and evenings when temps dropped, however. If you're sensitive to heat - this could get uncomfortable in the Summer. This is in a very busy part of town, so it might be a bit noisy for some. Earplugs are provided, but city noise is something I'm used to and I slept like a baby with the windows wide open. Note that the showers are indeed shared. I was really nervous about this, but it ended up being no issue at all. There are enough facilities available on each floor where I never had to wait to walk across the hall and use the restroom. Clean bath robes are provided to each guest and there was a nice big mirror and table in my room. There's really only two places to stay in this part of town - so if Luxury is what you crave - you'll be happier at The Hotel Ballard up the street. The Ballard Inn went above and beyond my expectations, however, and I will happily stay there again. read more

I found this place through desperation, during a last minute trip to Seattle. No hotel rooms avaialble due to a confluence of events, so a quick search revealed this place had free rooms. Found out that the place had only been open a week or two when I checked in. The location is in a cool, but a bit out of the way part of Seattle. Ballard is a great pocket of the city and a fun place to hangout and eat (it's literally across the street from Bastille) When I arrived, no one was at the front desk, and the door was locked. The receptionist had just stepped out for a second to help another guest. She apologies as the staff was not fully hired. No probs. The decor of the place is kind of throwback modern. the building is old, but the furnishings are kind of classic in design, but more quirky in appearance. think faux zebra skin on a chair, for example. I think it works, given Ballard's character. Room I stayed in was a bigger room, on the second floor, with its own private bathroom, and a king sized bed. Flat panel screen, etc. Not a massive room, but not crowded. Everyihing was refinished, repainted, or new funiture. Still smelled like new paint actually. I could see people might having issues with this room, since it faces Ballard Ave and it can get noisy in the evening weekends. Also, most of the rooms do not have their own bathroom. There are bathrooms that are shared (lockable though, single occupancy :-) throughout the hotel, and that may not fly with folks. I also don't think this woudl be a good family hotel. The location is killer, and that's it's biggest appeal. I almost wish there was a bar or bistro in the lobby, or nextdoor, but there are ample options in the area. Not sure what it would be like if it got very busy or crowded. there are no elevators as far as I can tell, and the rooms seem close together. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay. read more

First off there are two qualifications for me when it comes to hotels. 1. A comfortable bed and 2. A nice shower. Ballard Inn met both of these qualifications but went above and beyond them as well. I'm not one of those people that needs a King sized bed and food delivered to my room every morning. When I travel I'm there to see the sites not lounge around in my hotel room. My partner and I stayed in one of the Inn's "Full" rooms which included a dresser, a full sized bed, and a TV. The full bath was right across the hall from us and even though the inn was FULL TO THE BRIM the four nights we were there I NEVER had trouble getting into the bathroom. If you have an emergency there are two half baths as well. If you're squeamish about people seeing you walk to and from your room I don't know what to tell you other than you never would have survived the dorms at my old university. The bathrooms were very well maintained. In fact we never had cleanliness issues our entire stay. As to the TV I used it twice. Once to watch the news in the morning our second day there and the last night to watch 'House' while we fell asleep. It was a little complicated to use but then again my repertoire with televisions is Netflix. I could care less about the TV service since I try to spend as much time in the city I'm visiting as possible. The Aesthetic of the Inn was what really nailed it for me. The place looks fantastic and reminded me of my childhood traveling through bed and breakfasts in Europe with my family. The neighborhood is spot on. In fact we spent one of our four days just exploring Ballard! The Matador and Bitteroot are fantastic restaurants. There are also some great locally owned shops and a fantastic movie theater all within walking distance. The bus ride to downtown is a quick hope onto the D line (get an orca card if you're visiting Seattle, for real what's the point in driving in a city with fantastic public transit?) For the price and location this place blows it out of the water. Did I mention the free coffee and apples every morning? The service is fantastic and helpful and though we didn't use it the athletic club next door is free to use for guests. The "pricey" rating on this is a bit deceptive I think since it REALLY depends on which type of room you reserve. If you're someone who needs everything handed to you on a silver platter this place is not for you. If you are a seasoned traveler who knows what kind of price gets you what kind of experience Ballard Inn will meet, if not exceed, your expectations. I've stayed here twice but will not do so again. The location of the hotel is good but the hotel itself needs updating. It's expensive (for what you get) which is a tiny room that needs a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting and a good cleaning. The walls are paper thin and most rooms have shared bathrooms so the guests hear every door closing, toilet flushing and person walking/talking/coughing in the hallways. The street noise is also very loud. There is no person at the front desk (there really isn't a front desk) so you have to walk over to the Hotel Ballard to check in. Not ideal to have to drag your luggage to another hotel late at night in the rain just to check in. I called from the "lobby" phone to see if someone would come over to check me in but I was rudely told "no". The bathrooms (down the hall) are clean but very dated. If this hotel had good rates I might feel differently but you can stay in Seattle for less money and get much nicer/cleaner/friendlier accommodations with at least some amenities. read more

The Ballard Inn is the sister to the much more fancy (and expensive!) Ballard Hotel down the street. Most of the Inns rooms share a bath and are located in a renovated former boarding house. At least 3 rooms have private baths, 2 of them accessed seperately from a side street. The Inn is located in the heart of the vibrant and hip Ballard restaurant district. There are more bars, restaurants and chic shops than you can shake a stick at. A)l within a few block radius. Ballard Avenue also host a weekly Sunday farmers and craft market. The rooms are an interesting mix of modern convenience and antique furnishings. Comfortable and snug. You have access to the athletic club across the street for those who can't miss a day away from the gym. If you are looking for reasonably priced, comfortable lodgings in the heart of the Ballard entertainment district, this is the place. read more

I really appreciated how polite and accommodating the staff were during my stay. This is a very old, but, beautiful historic building so expect the creaks and squeaks that come with. Overall, I had everything I needed and the room itself, although small, was comfortable. Bathroom is communal, but, clean and the shower was nice. The negative was not realizing the inn was going to be unstaffed and the pictures online were a bit misleading. Amenities were provided across the street at the Hotel Ballard which is where the staff work out of. Had I known in advance, I would have much preferred to stay at the hotel is all. They do lock the place up at night, but, being completely alone there as a girl who isn't from the city was too much anxiety for me. Absolutely delightful quaint hotel in the heart of Old Ballard. From here, all the shops and restaurants are an easy walk. The front desk staff were first-rate, being extremely helpful in getting our heater going, refilling the fresh water bottles, providing coffee, and even loaning us an iPhone charger! When my wife and I first looked into staying here, I was very apprehensive about the shared bathrooms. I had in mind dormitory-style bathrooms where anyone can walk in at any time. In reality, they are similar to a restroom at a restaurant, where you lock the door behind you for complete privacy. In addition, there are enough bathrooms on each floor that overcrowding is never an issue. One of the first things you see when you check in are a set of earplugs next to the bed. Yes, it's an old, historic building with limited sound insulation, and voices outside do get loud at night. However, with earplugs in, my wife and I had no problem sleeping at night. We would definitely stay here again when we visit Ballard. read more

The good, bad and ugly.... Remember this is a 1902 hotel and includes some of that yesteryear charm. Built before you, your parents and in many cases your grandparents were alive. It lacks some modern conveniences your probably used to. These include AC, complete room silence and in some cases your own bathroom. The reviews I've read don't quite do this place justice. I stay in hotels roughly 2 weeks a month and you always get what you pay for, always. This hotel is a tremendous value for your wallet. It's not a discount hotel with questionable linens and shady people hanging out. But there are some pros and cons, you decide. ***Room noise: It's just part of being in the city and you get more of it from a historical building. They provide ear plugs to aide as most hotels in the city do. You will hear road noise and sometimes people walking in the halls. Because they are old wood floors and not some cheap veneer, occasionally a squeak. But that's just part of that old charm. In the end if you need absolute silence, can't function with earl plugs, this isn't the place for you. The bathroom situation.... I called just to ask for this review. There are 4 rooms with a bathroom included. The rest of them SHARE a bathroom. The cost different being $30-$40 a night so plan ahead if this is a deal breaker. I've stayed in both and its different the first time you have to run down the hall in the middle of the night. Several robes are hanging by the door so no need to pack one. Remember, this is how hotels used to be. Sometimes we are in love with an idea more than the experience. Personally I'll stay here again, I love the charm of this one. I'm tired of staying in a hotels where they all look the same. Where the only difference for many is a continental breakfast that includes preheated bacon and a yellow cooked substance that should resemble "eggs." If this property isn't your taste and you need the newer amenities don't forget they have a sister property. It is more expensive but includes AC, your own bathroom and of course room silence. ***Both hotels have access a wonderful gym facility, not a room with a crappy treadmill and multi-position weight unit, but a gym facility. read more

I loved so many things about this place - the history, the neighborhood, the charm, the friendliness, but if you're the least bit squeamish about sharing a bathroom you will want to make sure to book the King Room with the private bathroom - I enjoyed my stay, but each time I went into the bathrooms on my floor, they were dirty. I thought I was on candid camera! My husband and I were looking forward to a romantic stay while attending a formal holiday party next door. Upon arrival (where you have to call someone to come over to check you in), we were told that although we would not have to share a bathroom with others, our room had no windows. When we inquired how that was possible (Isn't that a fire hazard!?), they said that we shouldn't worry. We then saw our room, which was essentially a walk-in closet or large coffin - a small full size bed, no windows, super cramped, mattress was about as thin as a sack, and the bathroom (if lucky), could fit one person. We quickly asked for our money back and left - the gal who refunded our money seemed unfazed as this happens often. We peered into some other rooms and none of them looked remotely like the pictures they show on their website - so shady! Run, run, run! read more

What a lovely visit! I surprised my boyfriend with a night out in Ballard for his birthday. We live in North Seattle and it was a treat to be able to go out in Ballard and not have to drive home. We stayed in the Deluxe King Room 201 which was lovely and had it's own bathroom. Everything was nice and the vintage design touches throughout \ were very elegant. The best part about out stay was the customer service. Sarah, the concierge was so friendly and accommodating. Not only did she get me checked in quickly and easily but she went above and beyond helping me to set the room to surprise my man. She put my champagne on ice, found me candles for the cake and even borrowed glasses from a restaurant next door. She was so sweet and enthusiastic about helping me which was great. Absolutely stunning. Great job updating and renovating this place while maintaining it's historical charm! Staff were friendly and made some recommendations and accommodated our late check out request. When we booked there weren't any rooms with private bathrooms which made me anxious, but there are so many you would never be with out when you needed one. Rooms have great luxurious sheets and duvets, and we never needed any of the supplied ear plugs. I didn't have any of the included coffee (although it was cute and set up nicely!) because there was no whitener of any kind. Beautiful place and location, I will be back for sure! read more

Absolutely charming little place! This is definitely European/guesthouse style, as most of the rooms DO NOT HAVE THEIR OWN BATHROOM. If this doesn't bother you for a night or two, then you'll enjoy this hotel. The shared bathroom was literally a couple steps across the hall. I loved the decor, and most of all, the hotel was nice and clean. Our room was very small and minimalist, but perfect for a night's stay and the bed was extremely comfortable. We loved the hotel's close proximity to many bars, restaurants, and night spots, though if you're on the ground floor, passerby noise could be bothersome. Parking at night or on a weekend can be troublesome, or you can pay for shared parking at the athletic club around the corner. All in all, really enjoyed the stay and wouldn't bat an eye at staying at Hotel Ballard again. read more

The Good: The bedding and pillows were fantastic. The check-in process and lobby was nice. Was made aware of the shared bathroom situation while booking. If you stay on a saturday night, you've got a great farmers market literary right outside the front door. The Bad: The tv had a paltry number of channels No in room phone to contact the front desk with questions. No in room storage, in the room we had. An armoire would have been nice. No black out curtains. The Ugly: Woke up in the morning to see 10+ tiny little black ants scurrying around on the side of the bed. The beds are comfortable and the staff is friendly. It's true that you have to share a bathroom with others, but having stayed a few times now, I have never had to wait for a bathroom or even had any encounters in the hall. The biggest thing to know is that it can be loud. The gym across the street starts early and being in the heart of ballard, the noise at night can go late into the night. Great place to stay if you just need a roof over your head to sleep. I got a Groupon to stay at the Ballard Inn, but I don't think I would pay over $100/night to stay here. The room, bath/shower rooms are very clean. I stayed in a twin room, which was a little small, but I'm from Brooklyn and I'm used to cramped spaces. The water in the room is a nice touch, and it's THE perfect location if you want to stay in Ballard. Everything is within arm's reach. The only downside is that I had a street level room, which can get loud on the weekends. The walls are also a little thin, so the provided ear plugs were handy. A luxury hotel this is not, but you shouldn't be spending your time inside if you're visiting Seattle anyway! read more

Great historic landmark, excellent job preserving the history while adding a modern look. I've never liked shared bathrooms and this is no exception. They are roomy and very well kept but with no staff on sight throughout the night, towels tend to accumulate on the bathroom floors. If your a night owl Like me, you'll notice these things. The walls are paper thin so you get to listen to the nighttime antics of drunken hipsters. Along with the squeakiest floors in history. The comfortable beds and amazing pillows make up for these minor details. Apple's anyone? All the free green Apple's you can eat! At least I think they are free, I didn't pay for the six I took with me when I left at least. The king deluxe my wife and I had was probably the best room in the hotel. The corner room on the top has a great view of the busy streets below. Busy after four o'clock that is. Happy hour is huge in this area, compared to where I'm from that is. "Are you here for happy hour" you'll hear as you enter a bar or restaurant. I answered with "Na, I just want food". read more

The location is wonderful and the rooms are pretty nice appearance wise. The old building has a rustic feel to it that is unique. However, I struggled to give it more than 2 stars because sound travels through out the building. While having a low conversation in our room, I had to ask my guests to leave because the passive aggressive clerk said we were being too loud and he had several complaints. We were literally talking and walking on the floor to go to the bathroom, which seems within the realm of things we should be able to do without disturbing others. Secondly, the ice is located two buildings away on the second floor. Remember your umbrella, it is Seattle after all. Lastly, you have to pay $15 dollars to park in their garage over night. All street parking is marked 2-4 hours. I really wish the guy at the counter was nicer knowing that the sound travels naturally throughout this building. I would have been able to maybe give 3 stars. Charming inn with a very convenient location in the Ballard neighborhood. Walking distance to many amazing restaurants and shops. The inn was very quaint, clean and cozy. Bed was very comfortable - nice touch with super soft linens. Plenty of fresh towels. They even provided a window fan and ear plugs, just in case (wasn't needed, but nice touch.) The shared bathrooms were not an issue - never had to wait and was always clean. Coffee and tea provided each morning. Secure parking close by. Very helpful and friendly staff! DO NOT STAY at The Hotel Ballard....the rooms are barely rooms with not a chair to sit in, no closet, no place to hang anything, barely adequate bath, few towels and no screens on the tiny little window that is sidewalk level so anyone can reach in or stick their foot in. Housekeeping is iffy and inconsistent, entrance is outdoors on a main street with no lighting to find the lock to put your key in. On top of it is priced so far beyond even a nice hotel. HOw dare they ask $229 a night for NOTHING! $25 would be too much! Then on top of it all, having been there longer than we could bear, they charged us for a night we did NOT stay there & refused to credit us!! That's what you call customer service???? DO NOT STAY AT THE HOTEL BALLARD! I know a great B & B not far from there for $50/night including a beautiful homemade breakfast for 2! read more

Nice and clean place to stay for the night. There was not much things to do or visit around. It was inconvenient to have to share common bathrooms across the hallway. Room is not spacious at all. We got the deal through groupon worth $79 that we paid $79 toward regular price of hotel price, NOT a good deal at all but I should have read the fine prints. And the room can only accommodate 2 person max. We paid about $260 total for 1 night stay so one could get a much better deal than this. read more

If I had stayed in this hotel any time other than summer I probably would have given it 5 stars because it's cute, centrally located, and has great customer service. Unfortunately the one night I stayed there I couldn't sleep at all. It was a perfect 80 degree summer day and my hotel room was really warm so I slept with the windows open. There was street noise till 3am, also no screens on the windows. I was even staying on the second floor and it was a Sunday night. Ear plugs were provided in the room, but I'm just not one of those people who can sleep with them in. I spoke with another guest who had a room facing the side alley to see if it was less noisy on that side, but she couldn't sleep either. I would only recommend this to people willing to sacrifice some comfort for being close to all the great shops and restaurants Ballard Ave has to offer. read more

Stayed here again for my second visit. All was great in terms of friendliness of the staff, clean hotel and comfy rooms. The shared bathrooms still weren't a problem. The only problem on the second visit were the Ballard party animals! Keep in mind restaurants and bars are open late and the gym is across the street. You do hear all the activity as if the windows are open. You're in a great location having access to all that downtown Ballard has to offer however you might require ear plugs and/or sleeping pills. read more

Nice clean spot if you need a place to sleep in Ballard for a night. $189.00 a night for king bed was a bit much with a shared bathroom though. read more
