So I've never been here before, and I was told to pick a place for my bday party. I literally went on yelp and just randomly picked Ballast Point off of the reviews. And I am NOT disappointed. It was a good place. Although a little confusing when it came to 'hosting a party vs hosting an event' but once that got cleared up we were good. Stayed on the bottom floor and was able to get good seating that was good for everyone. - The beer and food were very good. Although they didn't have flights (only M-Thur) apparently, the beer I did have was smooth and tasty. The only downside that I had here was the time of service, maybe if there was a few ore servers, it would have gone a little smoother. But it was still a great night for me and my friends. read more

Great beers. Good vibes. Location location location. We went upstairs and enjoyed the night time view of the boats. Luckily it was during the holidays so the boats were lit up with Christmas lights. I'm sure it would be just as beautiful during the day. We ordered some beers they were all tasty. I always go with the classic that you can find in the markets. I did try one that was coffee and peanut butter. Wasn't a fan but still good. We ordered sharable nachos.. omg was it good. Great experience would go back again. Ballast Point is a decent brewery to head to for beers but they are not without hiccups. Me and my friends visited to celebrate a birthday and went straight to the drinking as soon as the doors opened. We headed to the outdoor patio area and were able to grab couches despite the large early crowds. The place gets packed fast and it only gets busier as the day goes on so I recommend getting there early. IPA's kicked things off then Sours shortly after to mellow things before the third round. Each were nice and cold. This was going to be a majority of the day function which meant we didn't want to get too buzzed too soon. With that said we looked over the menu and put in orders for food. The food menu is definitely on the better side of things when it comes to food from breweries I've visited. I'll start with the simplest, The Ballast Point fries. Either we were already buzzed or they were some damn good fries LOL. I believe the seasoning played a big role. Other plates ranged from small to bigger such as spinach & artichoke dip to mussels and wings. Each pretty tasty with the mussels taking the crown for the best plate in my opinion. I'm a sucker for a good dipping broth and the mussels supplied it. More rounds rolled out along with a raspberry cheesecake parfait I was really impressed with despite the lack of cheesecake flavor. Maybe it should have been called something else. What that is? I'm not sure but regardless it's delicious. As the day continued they began running out of food items (mainly ingredients) and that's my only complaint. Not so much that they ran out (it happens) but more so that they ran out, allowed customers to order without telling them, brings out the dish with missing ingredients and still say nothing. This was the case with a friends burger and another friends pizza. My friend told the waitress my burger is missing the onion rings, she replies..."oh I'm sorry we ran out". So it left us thinking were you going to tell us? Or were you crossing your fingers in hopes it wouldn't be noticed? Once maybe but this happened twice back to back with two orders resulting in them being sent back. I don't know if this is common here but if so, that needs to change. Proper communication with your customers is key and with that he or she can make the decision on whether or not they still want the items in question. This is the only reason they have a three star rating from me because its inexcusable regardless of how much fun you're having and makes you wonder if this was done to other plates but went unnoticed. This place might as well be an automat. I guess the draw is the microbrew because the food is meh. First of all the location is hard to get to if you don't live near the Long Beach Marina so not a destination venue. I went there because my friend picked it and I'm always looking for somewhere new. Even though the building is massive she chose to sit outside on the just as spread out patio. It's nice enough but it was cold that evening which didn't help (even with the typical space heaters). There is no real service here. You scan a QR to place and 'pay' for your food and drinks. Although I'm well past the legal age no one even bothered to make an attempt to card me. The text I got warned me not to change tables or my food might get lost. Duly noted, I stayed put. After struggling with the menu I ordered Asian styled ribs and rice, my companion a chicken atandwich with fries. I should have followed suit. Because I'm a grazer when I got to the rice, it was cold. A victim of my pace and the windchill. If we had any human interaction I might have been able to ask some questions and made better choices. The newest Ballast Point location in Long Beach is also the largest and most gorgeous. Set right on the marina, their floor to ceiling windows and patio seating showcases sparkling blue water views. I'm particularly happy that they have set up shop closer to me so it frees up space in my brewery schedule when I visit SD! Some notes: they are in a kind of popular touristy location with other restaurants around. This makes for difficult parking at peak hours, and you might have to take a bit of a walk from an external lot. This leads to the next note: chances are, you won't be able to get a good seat outside in the nice patio unless you arrive early or get lucky! Those things are always full, and all of it is self-seated. You also cannot order all the beers at any bar; the menu will indicate which ones are available at which bar (I think there are three...or four?) = B E E R = Ballast Point is pretty much a household name when it comes to beer, so I won't go into detail. I generally like their Fruit and Spice beers- they do those very well, as evidenced by the ultra-popular Grapefruit Sculpin. Keep an eye out for their R&D drinks too. These are still under "review & development," but I've been pleasantly surprised before. Prices are reasonable at $6/$7 a pint. = F O O D = As for food, I've only had their Open-Faced Albacore Sandwich ($14), which came with a heap of crispy golden fries. I opened up their current menu, and it looks like they have rotated their offerings and it is no longer there. It is a little steep, but I think it was still priced fairly due to the location and fancy-casual ambiance. It looks like they expanded on their wing menu- previously they only had PB&J wings which were quite good. I personally would rather eat elsewhere before though. = S E R V I C E = Lots of reviews were complaining about the service, but I have yet to have a bad experience! You are technically supposed to line up at the main bar to order food, but when our group was torn between us all leaving to order food and losing our primo table spot, a server who was walking by noticed and took our order right there. They need to fix the service and how they operate the tastings here... when I came here 3-4 months ago they did tastings over the weekend, I came back this past Friday and found out they don't do tastings Fri-Sunday - WTH what a bummer! how is this a brewery with lots of options but no tastings over the weekend? What they need to do if fix the way people order their tastings... get rid of some bar seatings to make room for tasting lines.. BUY plastic cups or something or order cheap tasting glasses so you don't run out of glasses... so people can enjoy and taste all your beers! What really won me over was the location! Amazing, beautiful location right on Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. The upstairs patio has a gorgeous view of the bay. My boyfriend and I came here on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all. He ordered the Wahoo white and I sampled some of the beers. I'm a sour beer fan so I got excited when I saw they had some on the menu! For food there was a wing special for that day so we ordered the honey soy wings and also the poke nachos. The wings we could pass on next time, but the poke nachos were delicious! Service was really slow for the food, we had to wait around 20 minutes even though there weren't too many tables there. Great COVID precautions. We waitlisted and got seated at the exact time it told us to return. You order very easily with a QR code on the table. Everything was clean, windows open and great ventilation. We ordered the steak nachos which were very good! The only negative thing I would say is that they encourage you not to leave your table so it was hard getting a servers attention for little things you couldn't do with the QR code (ie ask for extra napkins). We go here mostly for the view and atmosphere but this was probably the 4th time we've come and it was the most enjoyable. Usually it's a rabid hunt trying to find a clean table and waiting in multiple lines to order food and drinks. To be fair though, with the amount of people they serve on the weekends, it's naturally going to be crowded and there's going to be waits for everything. Ballast Point has to be in one my top 3 breweries for the views, beer, and great service on top of that. There was a point where my friends were coming here weekly during the summer just because the views are great but also we love the beers here as well. All of the sculpin beers are some of my favorite beers, but I would say grapefruit is my favorite but I do really love the Aloha Sculpin when I'm in the mood for a hazy IPA. Watermelon dorado is also one of favorites when they do have it. I've tried most of their food as well and I would say most of it is pretty solid especially for brewery food. One of my top places to go and chill with my group of friends since most of them do live in Long Beach so it's perfect -- especially on a hot summer day. It can get busy so I would suggest going earlier than later especially on weekends. And parking can be really difficult to find on busy days so I would suggest carpooling with friends. read more

I know it's a brewery and we're lucky to even have options for food, but because the place is so nice and spacious and cool it would've been nice to have an interesting menu...with originality... I think they would do well if they did beer tasting foodie events there- collab with famous chefs around LA for beer pairing events. Or even a beer paint night corner where one corner is just reserved for paint or craft or art class nights to make more use of the space they need to keep in between guests anyway. Maybe they don't need to "try" so hard to be different, they may think they have enough business without trying so hard... but people are easily bored and it takes more than what I saw to get me to come back again, only because I'm a food snob and not a beer snob... If it takes me more than 2-3 times to look over the menu and not know what I want and I'm feeling like hmmmm meh... and not excited about what I get to order, then the menu is boring. The food is boring. I want to look at menus that make me excited for my food to come!!! And if it was good I would crave the food and want to come back. They offered us a table inside or outside and we chose inside. 2 minutes later we decided it would be best to sit outside because there were children crying in the next table and our baby was sleeping. We went back to the host to ask if we can have a table outside and said that they don't let customers switch tables. We had not ordered, we had just sat down, and there were empty tables outside. There was really no reason for them to be so unaccommodating other than they don't give a s*** about their customers. We ended up leaving. I recommend spending your money elsewhere. Went to drink eat and watch the sunset on a trip out to Long Beach and our Airbnb host had Ballast Point on a recommended list of a great place to eat and watch the sunset. Timing it right for the table via Yelp waitlist was not too tough, setting a timer for when you wanted to arrive determined when you should join the waitlist. I joined at the recommended time (2.5 hours before on a Friday) and thought maybe it was too soon so I waited and watched the time expected to be seated until it was right and rejoined again. 2 hours on virtual waitlist while being able to do things out and about the was fantastic. The restaurant was fantastic, got to sit outside and watch the sunset, my sandwich was so good, drinks were Bella good. servers are excellent and attentive and ordering through the online menu and ordering portal is easy, done through a linked QR code at every table. Servers can also take manual orders if needs be. The whole experience made such a great impression that I can't wait to go back again! read more

11/26/16: I'm struggling with this one!--they have a wicked selection of their famous brews, and they got TONS of them, all made by just them, .... yet their food is seriously bad. It's a big place, and looks really airy, and is just a great atmosphere. Their servers are really nice and social too. But man, their food is sad sad sad,... sad sad sad.... sad Look, it's a great place to get a beer. Really. But compared to other large brewery gastropubs I've been to like Stone, Lagunitas, Mikkeller, etc. and the like, this place falls way behind when you throw food into the picture. Beer though, is as good as any. Anyway, this is what I had: 1. Piper Down 5.8% 16oz $7 "malty and complex Scottish ale, with notes of toffee": It was great. Can't remember much, cause I was totally happy, you know..... but it was great. 7/10 2. Curry Fries $8 "Japanese curry, scallions, lime aioli": Standard semi-thick fries, with curry seasoning. Fries were okay, but not particularly well fried. I did like the seasoning though. Pretty damn expensive for what you get though. 5/10 3. Beer Steamed Mussels $13 "Thai chili wahoo, coconut curry borth, jalapeno, ginger, garlic, cilantro, lime, baguette": BP, you need to immediately fire your cooks. And while you're at it, your whole cooking staff. Trust me. Yeah, the soup/sauce is fine. Nothing particularly awesome, but it works. Fun place to drink and chill. The food is ok, there's only a couple of stuff you can order so don't be picky. Lol But the beers... you can most definitely be picky! They have a wide range of different kind of beers you can try out! Poppy, light, dark, fruity... Lots to choose from! I've been here a couple of times with my girls at night just to catch up and have a few drinks. A group of us (7) were here this past Saturday at 5PM and we got a round of beers along with sooo much food: FOOD: -Garlic Confit Fries: anything with garlic, count me in! It was the right amount of garlic - made the fries so delicious -Steak Nachos: whatever sauce they used on the nachos was tasty!! The steak was cut into huge chunks and it was on the dry side. -Wings Buffalo Sauce: good, it tasted as expected -Wahoo Steamed Mussels: good and it comes with bread to dip with the sauce -BBQ Chicken Flatbread: I wouldn't order this again. The flatbread was covered in BBQ sauce and all I could taste was the BBQ sauce and nothing else. I didn't even know it had chicken, pineapple, goat cheese, red onion, or arugula -Ballast Point Burger: didn't try this but the person who ordered this said it was "meh" SERVICE: Beer and food were ordered at the bar and they gave us a buzzer. The food came quick which is a plus but we had such a small table it didn't fit all of the dishes and beer. However, employees were quick to stop by and remove empty plates and glasses asap. We easily found seating outside - probably because it was cold! We went upstairs to find a guy my friend thought was cute but he wasn't there BUT the upstairs patio was packed and the view from above was so pretty! Came here on a Sunday and we loved the wings and burgers. The beer is amazing I love the selection. Service could have been a bit better. I love their sours and the location of this brewery but the service is always hit or miss. Ordered a pretzel and they served me one that looked as if it was weeks old. Really dude? Come on, we can do better. Guess you don't have to worry about customer service when you've sold out! Another waitress came to our table and I asked for a new pretzel. I love the setting of this location. The beach view is amazing!! And the patio is super fun to hang out on. My one complaint is that there truly is not enough room at this location for the swarms of people that come rushing in on the weekends. Upon arrival, they will make sure to tell you if it's a "full house" AKA no seats, long lines to order food and beer, and a giant roar of drunk people socializing. As for beer, you can't beat the quality of a Ballast Point beer. I was sipping on the California Kolsch, which is a crisp and bright beer of 5.2% alcohol. Their menu is also great because the flavors are complementary with their beers. I had the soy glazed wings which were to die for!! SO flavorful and perfect for a stomach full of good beer. Comparison to Miramar location: I'd have to say I prefer Miramar because it feels like there is more room spread out. Also the cornhole is wayyyyyy better because you have a far distance to make it. Whereas at LBC, the cornhole is forced into the corner of the bottom patio where there are crowds of people (on the weekends).
