When a biochemist and a classically trained French pastry chef couple opened shop, we got Long Beach Beer Lab. Together they combine science, fermentation, and local quality ingredients to create some awesome craft beers and baked goods. The brewery specializes in sours but they also make IPAs, lagers, and stouts. I'm not much of a beer drinker so I appreciate that they have a sparkling Moscow mule cocktail, a house Chardonnay and a house Cabernet Sauvignon. LB Beer Lab is on my top 5 list of pizzas in this city and it's all because of my love for the Mushrooms Wild pizza. All of their pizzas are made with a beer malt sourdough crust and I recommend dipping the crust in their very garlicky marinara sauce! The Mushrooms Wild pizza has a creamy ricotta base, Local Long Beach mushrooms, caramelized onions, confit garlic, mozzarella, and topped with spring greens, fresh cherry tomatoes, and a lemony, parsley dressing. Yes, it's like a salad pizza and I love the zesty dressing! Their Margherita is quite popular with its star shaped crust and the Spicy Summer with Worthington Meatless pepperoni is good too. In fact, all of their items are vegetarian here. The garlic knots and beignets are bite-sized with a mochi-doughnut-like chewy texture. Both are great for sharing. Order at the register and they'll pour your drink and serve your food when it's ready. Food comes out pretty quickly. Delicious sourdough crust!! I loved the mushroom pizza I ordered- it tasted very fresh and a nice citrus zing to each bite because of the lemon dressing on it. My kids took me to Long Beach Beer Lab for lunch on my birthday, and wow -- what a treat! I absolutely loved it. The space is fun, bright, and welcoming, and everything we ordered hit the spot. The beer and pizza combo here is perfection. I was especially happy (and pleasantly surprised) to find out it's a kosher establishment -- which, if you know, you know! I immediately understood that their "meat" had to play nice with their "cheese," and that made me appreciate the thoughtfulness behind their menu even more. I can see how that might go over some heads (hence a few mixed reviews out there), but my crew and I get it -- and we love it! My favorite pizza was the Margherita -- I'm not big on faux meats -- and their West Coast IPA, Hops, is a total winner. Also, the Long Beach Salad was SO fresh and flavorful. Funny side note: the checker at Lazy Acres in Hermosa Beach actually turned me on to LBBL when I was buying a 4-pack of Dad Beer -- and she was absolutely spot on with the recommendation. It was a holiday weekend so the staff seemed busy which might explain why our table wasn't cleaned and the water cups ran out. There weren't any napkins available. The food was decent. Oh I am SUPER bummed that LB Beer Lab has decided not to bake bread or desserts anymore except perhaps at seasonal times! I loved to pop in and get a pizza, beer, and a loaf of olive bread to take home and slather with butter. So sad. But we broke traditional from ordering a full size Margherita Pizza getting a personal size one along with a personal size Mushroom Pizza. I have to say that while I think it's a great idea to have personal size pizza, they never seem to have the same gusto as a full size one. Perhaps it's just too much of the edge taking over the pie and thus less dough and toppings. While the Margherita was up to par we were woefully disappointed with the Mushroom Pizza which the staff said was an improvement over previous versions. While the super thin slices of potato didn't disrupt the pie nor do the ricotta (I love white pizzas), my question is: WHERE WERE THE MUSHROOMS! Were they chopped up? Bummed. Long Beach Beer Lab is the type of place I'd like to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon: drink a beer, eat a pizza snack, then take a nap. It's lowkey and just kinda chill with a good food program. Apparently all of their goods are baked in house which is pretty genius since it's all fermentation. I tried their cheese pizza ($19) and it was quite possibly one of the best cheese pizzas I've ever eaten. The pizza dough was fragrant with just the right amount of pull with a solid undercarriage. The cheese easily complemented the fantastic flavor of the dough. We also shared the Mediterranean Picnic Box ($12) which is kind of an incredible deal. Ours came with hummus, pickled veggies, olives + pickles, cheese, candied nuts, sourdough crackers and some fruit. This was the perfect accompaniment to our beers just because it was a healthier alternative to what we'd usually crave after a few beers. It was snacky and excellent for sharing. We walk in--lured by the siren call of pizza and beer. Classic combo, right? Apparently, I missed the fine print that reads: Pizza, but only if you're morally pure and meat-free. We step up to order, all smiles, and ask for a pepperoni pizza. The woman behind the counter--who looked like she's one passive-aggressive comment away from snapping a sage stick--hits us with a flat "No." Just... "No." So naturally, we're confused. Is pepperoni illegal now? Did it offend her chakras? We ask, "No? Why not?" She says, "We don't do MEAT here." Like she just caught us shoplifting a goat. Now listen, I get it. Plant-based, cruelty-free, compost-your-thoughts, whatever. Do your thing. But maybe lead with that on the giant "PIZZA AND BEER" signage before people walk in expecting an actual menu, not a morality test. Also worth noting: If you show up in a trucker hat and say you drove in from Orange County, you'll probably be welcomed with open arms and a gluten-free crust. But if you're an Asian woman with a white husband? Be prepared for the full cold-pressed side-eye and spiritual cleansing. I think one of the best margarita pizzas in long beach is found right here and it has a unique look to it as well. The brewery has tons of seating, brewery merch to buy and lots of arcade games to go have fun on. I absolutely adore this place. The atmosphere is 100% fun. The beers are good-these days there's a lot of brew lab competition. I love that they also have slushees, barley wine and gin and tonics-clearly making an effort! Their pizzas and baked goods will absolutely knock your socks off. They have the best pizza going hands down. If you've got a hankering for meat you'll be disappointed. My advice-learn to live without it and enjoy the pizza for what it is-simply the best. If I'm lucky enough to get here when they still have bread I always buy a loaf. Ditto pastries, cookies, and anything sweet.
