Meh. I don't really get the hype. When I came for lunch (on a very hot and humid day) the place was packed. The restaurant is not too big and the dish is boiled on the table so the entire restaurant was WAY too hot. Idk if it was because it was so hot, I couldn't enjoy the hot soup. I was miserable for like an hour. Nothing like lack of AC to ruin your meal. The 4 serving budae portion was smaller than expected and the soup (which is the most important part) was not flavorful. Nothing special. I feel like I could make the exact same thing at home. It was not bad but I just don't think it's spectacular. Service was at best mediocre. No refilling of water, no checking on us, rushed, etc. I wouldn't go back. There's better budae in restaurants that don't specialize in it. read more

For those wondering what in the world is this "Budaejjigae" and you're confused about it, I don't know how else to help you other than say it how you're reading it. Korean is a pheonetic language and thus you need to ensure you're saying it as you read it. Budaejjigae is loosely translated to "army base stew". Short history, during the Korean war, the US army would be camped around the South during the fight and obviously, the native Koreans would be in destitute poverty. Once the fighting stopped, the American soldiers who left the shores also left behind a slew of stuff, including Spam. Yes they had Spam back in the mid-50s as well. Koreans loved the stuff so much they included it in some of their traditional stews and it's basically what they got from the army base, hence the name "army base stew". Think of it in terms of the "kimcheejjigae" which is a stew made from the kim chee side dish. The difference here is the broth is made from a beef stock while the kimchee stew is generally out of a pork stock (there will be variations). And they basically throw in everything but the kitchen sink. Some places throw in the instant ramen noodles and fishcakes while others are simpler with less, but the Spam is important as that is literally the essence of the stew. This restaurant took the place of the Busan Fish Cake Factory. Suffice to say, this place was underwhelming in terms of the flavor. This stew is supposed to be rich and here, it wasn't. There was a light-ness to it that was disappointing. They also skipped out on the ingredients. Maybe the one person serving is less for whatever reason as all I had was some rice cakes, sprouts, scallion piece, strips of what looks like mini-Eckrich Farms sausage slices, and mini Spam. No ramen, no fishcakes, nothing that screams chock full of the ingredients that make this stew what it is, a plethora of goodies. This was just your average stew with literally nothing that made it impressive. It didn't pop out to me and the fact that normally, you're supposed to bring out so that it cooks in front of you... didn't happen. And they skimp on the rice. In order to sufficiently finish my $10.99 solo stew, I need to two bowls of rice and even then, the rice wasn't adequate to fully empty the stew bowl but I wasn't about to ask for a third bowl and get charged (they didn't charge for extra rice by the way!) This was a massive disappointment as I dropped $13.00 which includes tax and the tip on an underwhelming stew. Granted it was filing, but that's all it was, was filling. Lacked the enjoyment factor in my opinion as this stew was supposed to have a rich, deep flavor of gochujang, red pepper flakes, and a deep beefy flavor. It lacked all that. It was just hot in terms of temperature and a higher smattering of MSG for that savory factor, or at least that's how my mouth felt afterward as MSG is known to give you that extreme thirsty feeling after you're done. Service was great. Very energetic upon entry. Not very attentive during your meal as they operate purely on the bell system which I guess is staple for Korean joints here in the ATL. But they are quick to greet you as you leave the restaurant. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the food itself and this place is named for this dish and to me, it didn't deliver what a signature dish should bring as the namesake suggests. But if you never had it before, it's worth trying. Just come with friends as you might get more in your stew than riding solo... I know I did. No ramen noodles?! No fishcake?! Bally Budaejjigae is a Korean place that specializes in Budaejjigae. WTF is Budaejjigae? It's Korean army stew or hotpot. Basically, they get a spicy broth and put a bunch of junk in it. One of the popular ingredients are cheap meats like spam and/or hotdogs. Since this place is called, "Bally Budaejjigae", they're obviously catering towards Koreans. An American will have no clue or desire to go to a place named "Bally Budaejjigae." Don't worry though, they speak English. Yes, even though I speak Korean, I choose to speak English and Korean places. Each table has it's own portable stove top. They bring out a pre-cooked stew and let it boil on the little stove top. If you're hungry, you don't have to wait for it to boil. It's ready to eat. The stove is there to keep it boiling hot. You can also add extra ingredients like ramen or udon noodles, cheese, and other junk. It's good for groups. They have stews big enough for 2-6 people. They also have other stews as well like seafood stew and noodle dishes like Kal Guksu. Their stew was nice and refreshing. It was spicy, hearty, and delicious--perfect to cold wintery days. If you love spicy, boiling soup that burns your mouth off, this is the a place to try. read more

This place is located in Lawrenceville/ Suwanee area. The prices are decent. I thought the food was good but not the best. The chicken noodles were kind of bland but budaejjigae was good with ramen! The aides were delicious as well. Service was okay. It's pretty busy and seems popular. Prices are just right. Private parking. I definitely don't think it's a bad place to eat and it fills your craving especially on a cold day. Overall I'd say it's an average place in the area, it's not bad but it's not great. Came here during the first week that it opened, so the menu at the time had maybe 3 options. Of course, we had to try the Bally Budaejjigae. A small pot for two people will cost you $24.99. A bit pricy. They also don't include some of the standard ingredients (ramen, rice cake, cheese on top), so any of that will cost you extra. That's where they lose a star. I can't justify spending $30 on a pot of classic budaejjigae. Side dishes were alright. BUT for what it's worth, this is probably the most authentic budaejjigae I've had in Georgia so far. It comes with kimchi, beef, hotdog, spam, beansprouts, and scallions. Most budaejjigae in the area will have the similar ingredients, so I assume the secret is in the broth. Pro tip: The longer you let it cook, the more the flavors come out. Budaejjigae is one of my favorite stews. I've had many in my time. I'd say Bally is up to par with a solid budaejjigae, though it isn't the absolute best I've had. Service was really friendly. The waitress refilled our broth and checked in on us. Wholly unimpressed. Two stars for good water and hot tea. First of all it's hot up in there which made it uncomfortable for me, ymmv. My husband and I are like budaejjigae hunters lol we eat budaejjigae everywhere we go and we just can't live without it. The food and service here is great! The price seems high at first, but the potions are very generous, even for a small size. If you come here with a group of friends and split the bill then it ends up being a reasonable price for everyone. I've always wanted to try Budaejjigae and finally I have found the perfect place! It's in a good location and I was very impressed with the service. The owner and employees were very kind in greeting my friends and I when we were entering. As for the Budaejjigae, it was very good!! I love spicy food and this was really great and they also gave us rice! It was worth the money and the owner personally greeted us to ask if we enjoyed the food and if we come from nearby!! I'm so impressed that Atlanta has its own dedicated budaejjigae restaurant. We came here for an early Saturday dinner, around 5, and so there was only one other customer here at the time. By the time we left, though, there were three other groups here. The menu is pretty simple. There are two main groups of meal you can order: the budaejjigae with 3 different sizes and the asado platter, which is south American style barbecue with beef, pork and sausage, that comes in two sizes. They also have seafood stew, chicken feet and chicken soup. The real star, though, is the budaejjigae. Budaejjigae can be roughly translated to "army base soup," named for how, in the army bases, cooks would throw in whatever they have in the kitchen to make a soup. The soup has bean sprouts, ham, sausage, beans, dduk, and assorted vegetables. We ordered the small budaejjigae for 24.99 and added the ramen noodles for $2- which was well worth it. The stew pot comes out all ready for your table and they turn on the tableside stove and tell you to wait until it comes to a boil before you eat it and you serve yourself from the pot. It definitely tastes better after you let it cook for a while and then after a few scoops, you can add the ramen noodles for some added carbs. The service was attentive and they will come and add more of the broth if you want. You do get about six side dishes to get along with your bowl of rice (choice of brown or white) and the stew. One of my most disappointing meals out recently. I really have no idea how/why some people are giving it 5 stars and saying this place is so good. I guess they haven't tried very good budaejjigae. Budaejjigae has the word "jjigae" for a reason. The broth is supposed to be thicker and richer than "guk", which is lighter. The budaejjigae here was basically spicy beansprout guk with like 50 sausages lol. There were few other ingredients but they did not add to the flavor of the soup. Maybe some people like how light it is (although, then, I'd recommend other Korean soups to fit that taste). I was in Korean Army for my service and stationed in Eujungboo city, known as the hometown of budae jjigae. I can definitely say that Bally makes a very authentic budaejjigae. I love their foods and also like their reasonable prices. Their kids menu (jumuk bap) is also a great deal and my kids love it. I visited Bally three times and had budae jjigae, asado, and seafood stew. They were all good. The owner is super nice and very responsive to her customers. Will visit again soon. read more
