We have always had excellent meals at Balmoral over the past 3 years. The soda bread and rolls are amazing especially with their delicious butter. My wife's grandparents are from Scottland so she just loves having food she grew up eating. She starts her meal with Blantyre Chicken Liver Mousee or Scotch Egg or Ye Auld Cullen Skink. I start mine with garlic mushrooms or Granny's Pea and Ham Soup. My favorite entree is the Fish and Chips ( the only one I have had) lol. My wife has had the Shepherd's pie and Ben Nevis Chili and Honey Grilled Salmon several times, Pheasant couple times, and her new favorite is the Manor House Duck! Rarely have had room for dessert. It is very expensive so we only come here for special occasions but it is always wonderful, food and environment both. I need bonus stars for this restaurant... an odd niche restaurant in the far west suburbs of Chicago seems an unexpected recommendation, but it's just that good. Haggis dip? Cullen skink? Sounds weird, but once you've tried them you will get cravings for them... Earl is the best bartender and his drinks are always wonderfully balanced. We will sometimes get drinks at the bar and take some soup to go. The venison and beef Wellington are best. There's nothing that we've tried that we wouldn't order again. I'm gluten intolerant and most of the menu can be made gluten free. The bagpipe player is a fun touch. If it's your birthday or anniversary, expect a special tune :-) If you watch Outlander, be sure to check out the doors to the restrooms... Colin, the owner, is a special character who believes in giving back to the community. He regularly hosts local seniors for special meals free of charge. When we arrived, there was a Piper outside playing the bagpipes, which sets a great tone/mood/atmosphere. When we walked in we were greeted by warm and welcoming staff members. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. The decor is beautiful and it felt very cozy. The staff there is amazing and are team players. One staff member took our drink order, and another delivered the most delicious homemade breads, all before our waiter approached. I wish I could remember his name but he was the best Waiter ever! He was relaxed, funny, and very knowledgeable- he was able to answer all of our food and drink questions, and gave honest recommendations. Now on to the food. Oh. My. Goodness. Absolutely mouth watering! My husband and I had soup for an appetizer. I ordered the Cullen sink and he ordered the leek soup; 10/10. For the main course I ordered the Beef Suet Pudding and my husband ordered the rabbit pie; 10/10. We really appreciate the unique variety and options on the menu! I was so excited to visit this restaurant. As a Brit who has loved here for 8 years I was looking forward to authentic Scottish fayre and I was not disappointed. From the piper at the door, the beautiful decor, the Royal Albert crockery, our fantastic server Jake and a chef that can cook, it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Balmoral finally opened! We were so excited to try this place out after waiting months and months for the opening. Balmoral describes itself as a Scottish dining experience. The experience part of this restaurant is delightful. The decor is beautiful from the wood ceiling to the coats of arms to the ornate china to the beautiful glass shelving in the bar. Add to this the charismatic owner who stops at each table and the friendly service, and it is a very pleasant and entertaining restaurant in which to dine. The menu is somewhat extraordinary - 13 appetizers, three dozen entrees, and over a dozen desserts. We started with the Chilled Shrimp, Watermelon and Goat Cheese and the True Scotch Egg. The shrimp was a very interesting and refreshing preparation -- very unique. The Scotch Egg was less impressive with a sauce that was too sweet for my taste. For entrees, my husband had the Campsie Glen Chicken -- a chicken breast prepared with a Stilton cream sauce and bacon. It is a very tasty preparation, but it was not as cooked as we would prefer it, being almost pink in places. I had Hadrian's Wall Roasted Duck Breast, prepared medium per the menu recommendation. It was a very interesting dish, but I am not a fan of pink-cooked poultry. I think this dish would be much better well cooked. The desserts here are off the hook, by far the highlight of the meal. My husband had Ye Sassenach's Black Cherry Delight, which is a sundae of black cherries in coffee liqueur served over ice cream. I had the Auld Granny's Toffee Apple Crumble - this is simply amazing, subtle flavors of toffee in an apple crumble. Really delicious. Balmoral is still getting its sea legs. The grand opening is not until July 9th, and their plan is to eventually scale the menu back a bit based on local preferences. I am of Scottish/British decent so the Balmoral already is a draw for me. It is located in a sort of cute outdoor mall area, but when you step inside, it exudes old world charm! There was a kilt clad gentleman playing a bagpipe as we entered. Just wonderful! The bar is absolutely gorgeous. There is ample seating in the restaurant area but they have artfully broken it up to feel more cozy. The beautiful coffered ceilings help to dampen sound so we were able to have pleasant intimate conversation. The tables are set with lovely bone China and heavy crystal goblets. And then there is the FOOD! The charming owner (a Scotsman complete with his lovely Scottish accent) often visits tables personally and proudly offers actual recipes from his family members. Our last visit was to celebrate our 40th anniversary. They have an expansive menu! We began our dinner with the delicious Glasgow's Garlic Mushrooms. For the main course my husband chose Queen Elizabeth's Pork Chop with sweet brown mustard sauce and bacon apple-and-brandy chutney. He said it was out of this world! I was sorely tempted to have the roast beef and seasoned pudding, but that is something I make at home. So I chose the Balmoral Stilton Blue Cheese Filet. It was divinely cooked to a perfect rare! Melt in your mouth delicious! The sides are served home style and will not disappoint. We went all out and ordered dessert as well. My hubs chose Ye Auld Sticky Toffee Pudding. His eyes were basically rolling back in his head! My Princess Sabrina's Royal Flourless Chocolate Cake was fudge-y and delicious along with our perfect cups of latte. I must add that the servers are gracious, warm and knowledgeable! Amazing beyond words. From the moment we stepped out of the car, to leaving the restaurant our experience was fantastic. Piper on his Bagpipe as we walked to the entrance. Greeted by the hostess and started in the bar with a shot+ of Scotch Whiskey. Dinner reservation time.... Walked down a short hallway to our table for Six. All of the exquisite China meticulously collected for serving was beautiful. It felt like Sunday dinners like we used to have at Grandmas house. Appetizers, soups, salads entrees and dessert were all so good. Our table enjoyed the beef Wellington, pheasant, pork chop (huge!!), salmon, and rib eye. A table a bit away from us had the fish and chips. Next time I'll definitely have to try it!!!! Really a lovely tea service. They have an in-house pastry chef and the selection of goodies rivalled a famous downtown service. Even the clotted cream is freshly made. My only qualm is that there are no herbal teas for children or those who may not prefer a black blend (caffeinated or not). It doesn't take much to offer a chamomille or fruit tea, especially for the price. Be prepared to sip and chat for a couple hours. The service is attentive, when they come around. The biggest irritant was the repetitive playing of the bagpipes inside the restaurant for multiple birthdays. Please stop this immediately as you are pushing customers away. The food was good and we each had a different entry but the service was somewhat lacking. Especially clearing the plates after dinner. The menu was extensive and in general a real treat. I have wanted to try this place for a few years now and was so excited to finally get in there tonight. Greeted by a red carpet and bagpipes - this place is fantastic down to the fine details. Our server was Sarah (sorry if there is no H!) and she was also fantastic. We started with the bread, a pot of tea for me, the pork belly and bone marrow. It was perfect! For main courses i got the duck which was cooked perfect! My daughter had the filet with blue cheese cooked to a perfect medium rare, and my boyfriend had the beef Wellington. I'm pretty sure he would have licked that plate clean if he could have. We were there celebrating my daughter's 16th birthday a little late, and they played happy birthday for her with the bagpipes. Is this place pricey? Yes. But in all the places I've gone this place is worth every penny. It's not often anymore that you can tell the owner and staff truly care about each and every transaction from the bread service, to the meals, to the decor and service itself.
