The place had plenty of seating and a okay view. They had a lot of choices of mocos so that peaked my interest because I'm definitely a loco moco kind of guy lol. So I had to get the fried rice moco. Dinner with the family and we knew we wanted local food. Luckily, it wasn't too busy so we were seated right away. Our orders were taken for our party of 6 and then we sat and waited for about half an hour for our food. Maybe they were trying to get it out at the same time? Yes, go up the driveway to the second floor parking and turn left. This place is located in the first spot after you turn left. It is in with other businesses and may be confusing to find. We didn't see it when we turned left and parked further down. We were walking around other businesses but eventually found it. Do it! because it is well worth it. Came here this week and every plate I saw walking through the small restaurant looked like I needed to order it. Nothing super fancy, but yummy local comfort food. As usual, I needed to get the most bang for my experience and ordered the Sumo Loco. It's basically every Loco moco you can think of all in one bowl. Fried rice. Eggs over medium. Classic hamburger patty, chicken katsu, roast pork, and teriyaki beef...all smothered in heavenly gravy... Hoo-ah! It sounds like the kitchen sink, and that's exactly what it taste like...and it is GLORIOUS in all of its offensive 10,000 calories and 3 1/2 years shaved off my life. When the patty is too salty, you take a bite of sweet teriyaki. When you need some crunch, you grab some katsu. When you need to take a break...have some egg...then tender roast pork to start the cycle all over again. Seriously, I have not stopped thinking about it since. Neither has my stomach - it's still full. When the waitress left the check, she said, "good night!" Obviously, she must've had it before, because I really wanted to take a nap. I ding them half a star (round up!) for forgetting my Mac salad that I probably shouldn't have ordered in the first place...But can't help to think my sumo Loco could've been even more legendary with some creamy noodles scrambled in. For our last lunch in Maui we stopped by Bamboo Grille for some plate lunches and saimin. It's located on the second level of the shopping center, so when you drive up, you'll find plenty of parking spots. I was craving roast pork so I knew I had to get that. The main problem I had was that the gravy and pork were room temperature. The meat also didn't have a lot of flavor. This had potential but just didn't satisfy the craving. My girlfriend got the garlic shrimp plate and that was pretty tasty though. My favorite thing we tried was the saimin noodle soup. The broth was simple and the noodles had a really good consistency to it. Even on a hot day this was tasty and I'd get again. Overall, loved the family, old school vibe of the place and the prices are very reasonable. While I wouldn't get the roast pork again, a lot of the food I saw other tables got looked great. Just the other reviews said, the restaurant is challenging to find but if you turn on Waena St. from the Lower Main Rd. and take the ramp on the left up to the upper decker, you'll for sure be able to find the restaurant on the corner with plenty of parking. Unfortunately, they were out of ox tail, as noted on their door. We were greeted by a friendly staff and the restaurant looked clean with very nice paintings on the wall so we decided to still give this place a try. We tried their loco moco and their beef dish. Thought both were just ok. I would've wanted the rice to be softer and my patty not to be charred. The beef dish was more on the salty side. Probably would not get that dish again. However, they do have quite a few other dishes that could potentially be better but will have to come check it out another time. We do love how local this spot is. My daughter likes this hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Her friend who lives in Maui loves this place so she brought her here and liked the food so she wanted us to try. Tasty, but almost slightly too salty when I got it a few weeks ago. Bamboo Grille is also known for their large, made from scratch banana macadamia nut pancakes that is dripping in their vanilla bean sauce. Definitely recommend this! You can also order it as a single stack because it's big. This large order of fried rice was more than enough for 2 and the single pancakes are huge! Yep, this fried rice was winnahs, very tasty, moist. There is kalua pork/pork in the fried rice. First time trying fried rice with kalua pork, except for pork adobo fried rice. The only minor thing was the eggs we got was not over easy, I like to pop that yolk on to the rice. The banana mac. pancakes with vanilla sauce was such a treat, for after breakfast sweets. I love that vanilla sauce! Lolo ( grandpa) that brought out our food and drinks was super nice and hardworking. Service was slow ( understandable) due to only one cashier, that does it all- hostess & waitress. The sauce overtop was a coconut pudding (warm and tasty) The egg white side was really just two egg whites. Kinda a bummer but that's ok. I got what I needed The dry lo mein without shrimp was really good. Super savory and salty. The Loco moco had great katsu and everything else but the gravy is gross. It's not unique to here, but my kid keeps making the same mistake over and over thinking he will somehow like the gravy this time lol. Sad to say, as a lifelong customer, I won't be returning. This is the second visit in a row where we experienced poor service. We were the only guests in the restaurant when we arrived, yet our server seemed irritated from the start. She didn't write our order down and was actively walking away while I was still ordering. We ordered four simple items. When the food came out, only three dishes arrived. We assumed the fourth would follow shortly or that someone would check on us, but no one did for at least 15 minutes. About five minutes in, I realized the pancake was forgotten, but no staff came by even though the employees were standing near the front. When our server finally checked on us, we were basically almost finished already, we told her we never received the pancake. She responded, "Oh yeah... you got the one pancake, right?" and walked away. We then waited another 10 minutes. During what appeared to be a shift change, another server dropped the check at our table before we had received all of our food, which made it feel like we were being rushed out. When the pancake finally arrived, it was placed on the table without acknowledgment or apology. I wasn't expecting anything for free. I simply would have appreciated basic attentiveness and an apology for the mistake. Such a solid, inexpensive comfort food spot with huge portions! There were so many loco moco menu items which was perfect for my boyfriend. He got the beef stew moco, which had the most tender and fatty pieces of beef stew. The flavor was also amazing. I got a large fried rice that I thought was a little bland but with a lot of Tabasco and pepper added it was delicious. Probably one of the best fried rice I've ever had! The only complaint I have is that we got our eggs sunny side up, which was a mistake. This is the first time I've had a roast pork plate with WHITE gravy. (Not the cream of mushroom kind either) The gravy wasn't bad, but I could still taste the roux and it needed salt. I ended up asking for a side of brown gravy. Ahhh! There's the comfort food I expected! Now it looked and tasted more like a local style roast pork plate. Honestly, the only time I have white gravy on my plate is when it's smothering freshly baked biscuits. Totally lucked out and found this super local Hawaiian food joint. This place is probably the best in my books for local eatz. They open early for breakfast and have lunch all day. We were headed out to the airport (airport is less than 10 minutes away from Bamboo) and grabbed some breakfast before our flight. Also got some food for the flight to Los Angeles. Local eatz: everything loco moco, they have a ton of different proteins for your loco moco. I got the corned beef hash with over medium eggs and I didn't have anything left on my plate! We ordered two things to share between the two of us and the portions could honestly feed a family of 4 - it was so much food! The restaurant was full of locals so we knew we were in the right place. I can't get over how good the Banana Pancakes were. I'm not a huge banana person so I was shocked that I liked them. I kept seeing Loco Moco dishes at many restaurants but never ordered it and I don't know what I was thinking to wait until the end of the trip to try it! It was freaking delicious and salty. The Sumo Moco came with one hamburger patty, teriyaki beef, and chicken katsu. The teriyaki beef was unmatched - the best of all. I wish I could've boxed up our leftovers and took them home with us but that would have been a disaster! The building itself was really confusing for maps to find so we had to figure that out. And the parking is minimal since it shares a parking lot with an apartment complex. The building doesn't have any big signage or indication of where it is so that was confusing too, but we eventually found it. Our waitress was nice. They had modern Christian music playing and it was quiet. We just got done ziplining, and we were hungry. The portions are huge! I got the roast pork plate, and it was tasty. My daughter got the katsu curry chicken which was extra crispy and could have easily fed 3 people IMO. My other daughter got the saimin. She said she liked it, but she did add a little salt. My husband got the oxtail soup. He said it was ok, but he kept slurping the broth, so I think it was more than ok. We all had water, and as you can probably guess, they don't sell alcohol.
