Big Kahuna
Zara A.

I would recommend DA BENTO or BIG KAHUNA to try a little bit of everything and sub a side for the BRUSSELS SPROUTS!! Da Bento comes with fried shrimp, fried chicken, spam and beef teriyaki. While the Big Kahuna comes with fried fish, fried chicken, and beef patty. Overall the tastiest things were the beef patty and shrimp other than the Brussels which were so flavorful and crispy. Next time I would try the chicken katsu which also looked good! Great portion sizes for the price while still having solid meat quality.

I don't know how I haven't reviewed Kalei's until now. It's now a tradition that after stopping at Target for provisions, we stop at Kalei's before heading to the hotel. Everything we've ordered here has been delicious. My favorites are the chili garlic shrimp (though I don't love the shell on preparation) and the shrimp katsu. I'm also a huge fan of their rice (not gluey and cooked perfectly) and their mac salad. Our most recent trip to Maui got us in during breakfast and I had their corned beef croquettes. Delicious! I highly recommend Kalei's. Their menu has something for everyone, service is A+ with friendly and helpful staff and the food is delicious.

The ala carte teriyaki chicken was a big portion and is delicious. I grabbed that along with the chicken salad. Both were freshly made to order and very tasty. Great and filling dinner. Great customer service. Please come and create your own adventure.

Kalei's is the local spot in Central Maui if you're new to the island and wanting to try some ono Plate lunches or you're a local trying to satisfy your cravings! I treated myself today and got the Mini Ono Ala Kalei with Capers, Tomatoes, Mushrooms in this frothy butter sauce! It's sooo addicting! It's accompanied by a side of rice and instead of the Mac Salad, you can opt for healthier choices like the Side Green Salad with Papaya Dressing or they have their famous Hurricane Brussel Sprouts. If I'm trying to be budget friendly, they have a yummy Saimin which is $6 if you're wanting some comforting broth and noodles or a Weekly Cheap Eats which is $6 and basically a mini lunch plate. Mondays are always my favorite because they have Shoyu Chicken and sometimes Chili with Hot Dog. I heard the cashier say 4 is the Cheap Eats limit or they'll charge more. My friends usually get the Mahi Burger, Chop Steak, and can't go wrong with a Hamburger Steak or Loco Moco. They usually have a selection of pies & breads. Today didn't really have much. Try their Pumpkin crunch, selection of cheesecakes like Blueberry or Strawberry or their Mud Pie. Go for the Banana Bread if you're wanting Bread instead of the Mango. I was pretty disappointed when I got the Mango Bread before, it was a bit more dry and didn't have those mango pieces throughout. Overall, a great spot if you're wanting some local kine grinds. Lunch time can be quite busy but if I ever go between 2-4 pm it's quieter and food is faster. They close late at 8 pm.

Delicious food! Spacious place with tons of tables to sit at. Ordered the chicken plate and it came with rice and Mac salad. Staff were super friendly and nice, would come back again the next time I visit

Another spot recommended by a local so I was super excited to try this during my stay in Maui. The Maui Lani location was just a 10 minute drive to our hotel by the airport, making this a convenient spot to pick up some last minute food before heading home. I thought food was good although a bit generic as this place is mostly take out style. Even though we chose to dine in, the food was served in takeout boxes and disposable utensils. There were lots of clean open seating area for those who dined in but It seemed like there were many locals in the store who called ahead or ordered online for pickup, not as many tourists. We ordered the Saimin, hurricane fries, and Da Bento lunchbox. Out of all the items we got, I liked the hurricane furikake fries the best. It was crispy, umami, and full of flavor. The Saimin and bento box were good as well although I wish I ordered more unique items from the menu. If I did go back, I'd also want to try their dessert selection, particularly the pumpkin crunch which was unfortunately sold out by the time I had finished my food at the restaurant :( a great spot for a quick bite or picnic food for on the go

Teriyaki Beef with rice and Mac salad.

We looked for a local spot to grab lunch when we landed at the Maui airport and Yelp directed us here! The food was amazing, such a big portion for lunch, it kept us going for the rest of the day and was reasonably priced. Everyone working was very nice and food came out quickly despite the never ending line. I was very happy with my teriyaki beef and every dish comes with a side rice and mac salad.

Da Bento, Brussels, fried rice

Recommended by a local who thought we were locals. This was a little far from where we stayed but it was a nice drive to support a spot less touristy. In an unassuming strip mall, the restaurant was fairly empty for a late lunch. Lots of people came and went to get food to go. We weren't hungry enough to order individual plates, so we shared one bento lunch plate and got sides. Here's our take: - Da Bento Box: mac salad nice and cold, mochi chicken had lots of flavor, shrimp was BIG (came w two), and beef was tender with lots of flavor. Great variety for a plate lunch. - brussel sprouts: loved char and the pork belly bits were nice touch - fried rice: HUGE for the price and had spam! Flavor was on point, a little loose for my liking, but really good value. It took a while for the food, but it seemed like a popular spot for locals to take out. It's worth checking out.

Good food & friendly service. Didn't get to try the desserts as we were on our way to the airport. We will definitely come back to this restaurant next time we are in Maui. A lot of customers seem to be locals & a couple of police officers came to eat there as well. I think that's a good sign.

Triple Double $9: two eggs, two bacon, and two pancakes (Chantilly Macnut Pancakes).
Lori S.

I've eaten here many times for lunch and dinner. My first time having their breakfast. Triple Double is a good deal $9: two eggs (any way), two bacon (offered choice of other breakfast meat), and two pancakes. I was curious about the Chantilly Pancakes, which they said can be my two pancakes in the Triple Double! Pancakes fill the 8x8 take out container. They only have regular coffee, but I like coffee any way that it's available. It got very crowded as lunch started with people waiting for our table.

IMHO We needed a lunch meet-up place for those of us who had just arrived on the island from the airport. We texted everyone to meet at Kalei's Lunchbox on Maui Lani. Order and pay at the counter, then pick your table. We secured a long table for our party of nine. The restaurant is clean and bright. My family ordered the Triple Double, two pancakes, two eggs, and 2 slices of Portuguese sausage, a Cheeseburger & Fries, Chili Garlic Shrimp w/a side of Hurricane Brussel Sprouts, and either the Big Kahuna or Da Bento. All food is served in take-out boxes, which I think is brilliant. Portions are generous and the prices super affordable! Don't forget to check out their display of pastry delights! I just had to order some Chocolate Bread! Next time, I will order more!!! Get thee to Kalei's Lunchbox! You won't regret it.

this is our favorite dish, but it's a hit or miss lately, sometimes it's strips and sometimes it's the full pieces. We prefer the whole pieces over the strips as the full pieces are more juicy and less burnt pieces. Please bring back the full pieces of chickens that were uncut. But these are still delicious but we prefer the full bigger pieces. No hate or anything, the staff are always lovely and so friendly

We went for dinner this visit but I was just a lil too late to get the cheap eats they ran out. I got the grilled Ono burger and I was confused cause it looked like a fried egg at a glance. It was a big portion of fish it needed some seasoning but still good and only $11. My husband had nicely well done cheeseburger. Good service and plenty of seating.

So, We picked up food to take out for a picnic ahead of our drive to Hāna. The line was very long and was disrupting traffic flow in the parking lot. The food was very good. The chicken noodle platters were hearty and delicious. Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. This place is a must try if you are in Maui. Just plan and order ahead. This place is by the airport in a shopping center, not near the beach area!

I really wanted to love this place because I loved Sheldon on Top Chef…read more but...unfortunately...everything I tried was terrible. I tried teh Kau Kau Tin with pork belly and garlic noodles, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, and a small mac salad. Generally, the Kau Kau Tin and the mac salad were utterly bland. The mac salad tasted of nothing. The garlic noodles in the Kau Kau tin also lacked flavor. The garlic noodle had the slightest of garlic taste. The pork belly was perfectly cooked and was the best part of the Kau Kau tin and I made sure to make each every piece of that. The Spicy Chicken sandwich was the most disappointing item I tried. The chicken patty was just a VERY FATTY piece of fried chicken. It was terrible. The texture shock alone from biting through crispy crust to gelatinous fat was shocking. But then, the chicken was not seasoned. It was a textural monstrosity that had no flavor. All in all, I'm glad I tried it. I will definitely try it again when back on the island in hopes that this was just a bad day.

I like the new location definitely easier for people to get to as the last location was upstairs with no elevator. One thing that has not changed is the food is still just as good if not even better than before. On this trip we had the Lunch Special which was the Waygu loco moco that came with white rice and Mac salad and two eggs over easy. The Wagyu burgers were perfect not over seasoned and the eggs were perfectly cooked. Still runny on the inside. I had the mis fish which was an ahi today. I liked the fact that the Miso was not overwhelming they got them mix perfect and the broccoli was perfectly cooked and it came with a scoop of white rice. Everything was perfectly done and just the right amount of food. The price is still reasonable for the quality of the food you are getting and the service was great even though there was only one waitress and she was doing double duty as hostess. She was very pleasant and the service is some of the best I have had on Maui. I like how the new place has a nice local feel while having that new but welcoming aura. I will definitely be going back because I like to support local and these guys are making some great food for reasonable prices. I definitely recommend these guys and I will definitely be going back. So much more menu items to try.

We did get there maybe 30-45 min before close so we didn't get to try the chicken. However, what we got was super good. We got the grilled kalbi ribs and the hamburger steak plate. The kalbi ribs were super tender and the sauce was perfect. Not too sweet and not too overpowering to where I could still taste the beef. The hamburger steak wasn't anything super special but still good. No complaints on it. The Mac salad was great but I wish they had another side instead of just corn. The view where we sat was nice but the only complaint I had was the amount of flies where we sat. Food: We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, miso butterfish, garlic furikake fries, hamachi sashimi, garlic noodles, and crispy chicken. My favorite was the hamachi sashimi. What I enjoyed about this dish was the diced maui onion that offset the citrus from the ponzu. The flavors are light, and refreshing. The most disappointing was the crispy chicken. I thought it was too salty, but that's my preference and salt tolerance. The miso butterfish was also a great dish. The fish was buttery and flavored well. Not too saucy but the perfect amount of sauce. Service: Service is friendly, like most of the restaurants on Maui. The food was served in a timely manner. The ambiance is casual and felt like a bar restaurant. Overall, I'm not sure if I would return. After ordering 6-7 dishes, I wanted to be blown away by at least 4-5 of them, but that wasn't the case.
