I have eaten here twice. First time I got a salad and it was great. The second time however we were very disappointed. One of our meals was wrong and the other was just ok. When they. Finally corrected the meal what arrived was not what we expected. The chicken was not very clean and fatty. Maybe that's ok when you order $6 teriyaki but not at a place like this. Instead of taking it off our bill, the waitress just charged us for the tofu version ($2 less) of the meal. How that makes any sense... I don't know. The food was overpriced and they tried to up sell at every chance. I feel this is very disrespectful to try to squeeze dry everyone who walks in. Iced tea was wonderful and the place has a great atmosphere. I wanted to love it but just didn't. I would try it again but for those prices... not gonna happen. read more

I was really underwhelmed by Bamboo, especially given the reviews. The portions are pretty small-- my brother ordered a large salad which was small or medium sized at best. Additionally, the romaine was mostly the white parts on the bottom of the heart of romaine, not the leafy part. I got the coconut chicken with soba noodles and it was just okay. The food took a while to come out, but the friendly staff made up for it. Overall, I probably wouldn't come here again. Go to the BBQ place across the street! Food is okay quality, slow to come out despite restaurant being 30% full and overpriced. Service was mixed, the first waitress was sweet and then "Joan" corrected her about how to position the food by reaching across me and doing it for her. This is after Joan whacked the back of my chair with a high chair and then scolded my husband for not eating the organic slice of tomato that has no place on a teriyaki sandwich. read more

Don't get takeout from here. Food was messy and lacking flavor and salad was soggy and drowned in dressing. Perhaps eating in is a better idea and maybe they pay more attention to your food, but I usually don't have time for that. So needless to say, I won't be getting my lunch from here again. read more

Bamboo is an awesome place to eat! I had a noodle dish with fresh veggies and perfectly cooked fish on top. They gave me both a Thai coconut sauce and a teriyaki sauce on the side. -Both amazing. Cute bamboo wallpaper, and there are painted birds hanging from the ceiling. The menu's are even made with bamboo! They really went all out on the theme! Cute gift shop and art gallery as well. Great restaurant! Wonderful lilikoi drinks and always amazing and fresh fish dishes. One of the best places to get Kalua Pork on the Big Island. A great stop on your way from a hike at Pololu Valley. Don't eat too much since you'll want to save room for some mocha cheesecake. A spacious restaurant with friendly and swift service. It is actually located in a building that used to be a brothel, the staff will happily share some history of the building and town with you if you ask! They have a cool gallery upstairs that is worth a spin while you're there too. Worth a stop in every time we are on the Big Island. read more

We came here for lunch with some friends and found the place to be very fun. There's also a gallery that I was able to walk around while waiting for the food to arrive. Friendly old building, friendly young staff, gluten free menu available. We had the Thai shrimp, the dumplings and the Caesar salad with the fresh fish of the day. Been coming here for 20 years at 3 or 4 times a trip at the bamboo house today was treated by Joan so rudely I will never eat there again. She serve food I could not eat and when I complained he took it back and gave me what I wanted that was very good then refused to take the price of bad food off the check ask me to go somewhere else to eat next time. My boyfriend and I ate dinner here during our trip to the Bug Island. We ordered the grilled coconut shrimp for an appetizer. It was wonderful. For the main course, my boyfriend ordered the artichoke, lemon and cream mahi-mahi, which he loved. I ordered the ribeye and was very pleased to find they actually cooked it rare. The mocha cappuccino cheesecake is an excellent way to end the meal. read more

Yummie! We were starving after hiking Pollolu and yelped nearby good restaurants in Hawi. Up came Bamboo Restaurant. The host was very nice in telling us that we were parked in a no parking zone. We sat down. Although slightly cheesy, I guess the green lighted palm trees work in Hawaii. I had the Kalua Pork which was actually very light and not that salty. Our waitress was very friendly. The passionfruit/liliokai iced tea was better than the normal one. The stir fry noodles was also "healthy" tasting especially with the fresh ono. Apparently the building is 100 years old and sort of a landmark in the area. read more

We had probably one of our best meals on the island here. We came here for lunch after our zipping trip. I had a wonderful passion fruit iced tea and the coconut curry chicken. The bf had their slider sampler plate-mini cheeseburger, teri chicken, and pulled pork. The coconut curry chicken was huge, it came with two scoops of rice, several pieces of grilled chicken, and lots of steamed veggies. The coconut curry was slightly spicy with a hint of sweetness. The manager was very mindful in checking in on us through our meal. Hawi is a cool little Western town that all the Waikoloa peeps like to come up and visit for the day. read more

Very nice, casual place for a great meal. I went for the first time last week, but some members of my family are regulars (they're in the area once or twice per year). I am not a big fan of fish other than salmon, but had grilled Ono on a citrusy salad that was fantastic! We shared a cheesecake for dessert that was very nice--rich, but not too sweet. Local, fresh ingredients are used, and used very well. We ate here for lunch last summer and just went back for another lunch on our Spring Break visit. We both had the Thai Fish salad, made with green papaya, cucumber, onion, tomato, peanuts and carrots tossed in a chili lime sauce. The salad was served with fresh pineapple and taro chips. The blend of the sweet and salty really hit the spot. If you visit Hawi, I suggest you stop here for lunch. read more

We just ate here for lunch while on the Big Island for our vacation, and while my husband enjoyed the stir fry he got, I thought that my grilled fresh fish with white rice (some kind of special since the type of fish apparently varies depending on what is available) was bland to say the least. Went here yesterday after flumin' kohala! The food during happy hour was great!!! Quesadillas, shrimp, and calamari were my favorite. They amped everything up to the next level by having amazing pork and what seemed like handmade salsa with their quesadillas. The shrimp had this coconut curry sauce and it wasn't fried!!! Soooo delicious. The calamari wasn't chewy whatsoever, so I knew it wasn't cheap quality. Definitely would recommend if you are in the kohala area! read more

Is there a 6-star rating? I went there recently with my family. Nearly all of us ordered the Ono, but in different styles. I had the Thai version. There was also two or three other styles. I tried them all and I savored every last morsel. My family has raved about this diner ever since. It was worth every penny. The point of yelp is to reward quality and this place has it in spades. What a fun, cool, old feel of Hawaiiana this place is, well, the bldg anyway...the food is more modern, but still has a local feel and it is very good. We stopped for lunch and my husband had the Big Bamboozler (a sample platter of some of their "pupus") and he enjoyed that. I had the Kohala coconut grilled fish and it was yummy yummy yummy! The service was very friendly and we would return again. They have an eclectic little shop attached to the restaurant that had some interesting and cool local stuff, too. Our friends who live on the Big Island recommended this place and we were glad they did. We started out with a pina colada that was delicious (and had us lightweights feeling tipsy after a few sips). A MUST on your trip to The Big Island. This gem, known among the locals will feed you great food but it's much more than that... It's a whole experience. There is an art gallery and gift shoppe with native Hawaiian and Polynesian art, and you can even take home a bottle of the Lilikoi (passion fruit ) syrup to make your own Hawaiian drinks at home (at my Birthday we had a featured drink "Hawaiian iced tea"). Another diamond in the rough in the middle of nowhere. Great food, great down, smiley/happy faces! This is located in a historic building with a great history. Food is very good (not Michelin chef 5 star) - more like 4/5 star coooking. Asian influences and memorable. read more
