after 6 years we finally made it back for my much improved breakfast experience. Got the seafood platter over the weekend and it was weak. Manini sizes don't get it, not worth $20. The scallops were the worst the size of a penny. My daughter got the keiki breakfast, we exchanged the pancake for a waffle. They said it was extra but the extra was $7 so her whole meal was $20. Been craving for a loco moco since arrived in Hawaii and I was determined to try this place out with its high reviews so that even when it said cash only, I spent 4 bucks to get 20 bucks out of the atm machine they had on site. I ordered the loco moco but was really disappointed when their loco moco was delivered to the table. The gravy was sweeter than expected and too thick. The hamburger patty was not cooked thoroughly, and the juice made the rice a reddish color. Maybe I should have been clear about well done... but, suffice it to say I did not really enjoy the meal. I got the Loco Moco that had 3 different meats, and honestly I could've just had the original. The gravy could use some seasoning and the meat was a tad dry but overall it was an okay dish. We went to a "must do" restaurant on our last day in Kona, the original Hawaiian Style Café in Waimea. It's been remodeled since my last visit ... The entrance has been moved to the RH-side of the front of the building and the place has been painted in a light and bright yellow. There were six of us; one tried the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs ($16.95), another opted for the Loaded Hash Browns with eggs, three had the Corned Beef Hash and eggs ($16.95) and I wanted the Kalua Hash and eggs ($16.95). All but the loaded Hash Browns comes with your choice of rice or hash browns and either pancakes (x2), toast or Belgian waffle. Don't order the pancakes unless you're starving and have a big appetite ... They're humongous! Sensible diners would split a breakfast order if opting for pancakes or the waffle. However, the pancakes or waffle alone are $10.95 versus $1.95 for toast so the deal is to get the former. I was somewhat disappointed with my Kalua Hash ... Back in the day, it came atop a mound of fried rice. I should have ordered fried rice ($3.95) instead of getting the (free) hash browns. My mistake; not to be repeated. The most sensible breakfast appeared to be the loaded hashbrowns. Come hungry or be prepared to ask for a takeout container. I think the Waimea location is better than the one in Hilo, but that's my opinion. It would have been an unconditional five stars had I ordered fried rice with my kalua hash. read more

Extremely Disappointing Experience -- Would Not Recommend My family and I had one of the worst experiences we've ever encountered at Hawaiian Style Cafe. From the moment we walked in, the hostess made it clear we were not welcome. She asked how many were in our party; we told her we had 3 present and were waiting on 2 more. She immediately told us we could not be seated until all 5 arrived. Not even a minute later, another group walked in -- a party of 3, but waiting on 1 to arrive-- and she seated them right away. When asked why we weren't seated, it was stated that it is policy to wait till all in party be present to be seated. To be clear, the restaurant was almost completely empty. There was absolutely no practical reason we couldn't be seated, and the only difference between our groups was that my family are local (dark brown) and the other group was white. I don't like assuming the worst, but when the policy is enforced on one group and ignored for another, it's hard to see it any other way. I served 26 years in the military, and I believe I deserve the same basic respect as anyone else. Instead, we were treated as if our presence was an inconvenience. The manager attempted to explain the situation, saying the other group got seated while missing their 3rd person because they were family and third person that wasn't present yet was owner. How are customers to know who got VIP treatment??? Still no excuse. The damage was already done -- and the explanation didn't make sense given what we witnessed and experienced. My wife grew up here, never ate there and wanted to go because of all the great reviews on the food. Our son was excited, and this was the last place we expected to get treated with no ALOHA! Broke our hearts. If possible, I wouldn't give a single star. The only reason I'm giving one is because the manager at least tried to address the issue. Unfortunately, the experience speaks for itself, and we will not be returning. read more
