Also I came during Portland Dining Month so had to try their offer and it was great. Miso soup very flavorful and full, chicken is amazing and not overly dry. Sushi - amazing. Bamboo Sushi on NW 23rd has easily become one of my favorite Portland spots for sushi happy hour when I'm in town! I've stopped by twice now and each time I had a great experience. The ambiance is beautiful, cozy, and perfect for a solo date or dinner with friends. On my first visit, I sat at the bar with a friend and had fantastic service! Our bartender was friendly, knowledgeable, and walked us through his cocktail making which was awesome! During my second visit, I sat in the dining room with two other friends and had an equally great experience. The cocktails were tasty and the food was chef's kiss! The place was crowded when we stopped by around 6:00 without a reservation. Fortunately we were seated right away. Not being a fan of sushi, I was surprised to find that there were many things on the menu other than raw fish to choose from. We shared edamame, cucumber sunomono, chicken kaarage, and a tuna roll. The only complaint about the food is that the kaarage was a bit too dry. Otherwise the food was fine. Not being a big fan of Japanese cuisine, I'm not sure what "great" food would be. Appetizers: - Tempura cauliflower (MUST ORDER) that sweet tangy flavorful tempura battered cauliflower was one of the best appetizer I've ever had. - Chicken Karaage - Just like the normal karaage , not bad - Wasabi Honey Chicken - Initially, I thought it's just chicken covered in honey, but to my surprise (forgot to take a photo) - Shrimp tempura - very good, I like how the tempura batter is very thin but crispy. - Edamame and the garlic fried rice - nothing special, the fried rice was a bit soggy in my opinion. The Wagyu burger, which I had heard good things about, had a hearty portion of meat but did not taste like much else. I asked for my meat to be cooked medium but it came out well done. There were 4 of us for NYE. We ordered the Tomodachi, which supposedly serves 4-6 people. We ordered another roll and an appetizer with that and we def didn't have any leftovers but we were all comfortably full. The spicy tuna crispy rice was amazing I would 100% get that again and the Green machine Roll (we added salmon to it) was also soo good and I would get again. Everything else was good but I would prob not order that board again and order those 2 with something else new to try if I went back. Bamboo Sushi was a perfect place for sushi. We randomly came upon this place after walking around 23rd Street. They have a unique twist on their sushi. It almost has an Italian like influence on many of their dishes. Every we ordered was amazing with my personal favorite being the Hoki Poke Box. I also recommend sitting at the sushi bar. Good sushi and fewer crowds than way back when. Lots of options for sushi and a lot less description aware each individual fish came from like I remember from the old days. I found the service friendly and they took care of our group of six although one person's order came out half hour after everyone else, which is always an embarrassment when you were hosting a dinner for out-of-town folks all in all this place has stayed the same while sushi and other places has gotten better. It's like heaven for my taste buds, and I refuse to try other rolls because this one is just that amazing. It's a healthy addiction! Style here is the complete opposite from the casual Downtown location. This location feels more simple with the light color wood and has a very minimalist, tranquil and earthy feel. Without a reservation, we were seated at the bar and happily took advantage of their Happy Hour offerings. Our server doubled as the bartender and was all smiles with swiftness. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails were crafty and nice. My crispy, Asian cauliflower was divine (maybe the flowers could've been a bit bigger). My daughter's Shishitos were tasty and so was her Tuna Poke. Hubs detoured from the condensed menu and had 3 types of sushi that missed on flavor. On a happier note, this Bamboo location has a space that's smart and flows in harmony. But our hot appetizers were the ones that took center stage. read more

It is never ready on time - even when we get a notice its ready we end up waiting another 10-20 mins for 'one last item' - which means the rest of the order is no longer fresh. the cool things are warm and the warm things are cool by the time you get it all. Also the nonchalance of the staff relative to this issue just makes it more irritating, especially given how expensive it is. After years of ordering there we've moved on. read more

(At some point in the dinner I actually opened my phone and yelped restaurants open) I'll break it down. Service: terrible. Absolutely terrible. This is a restaurant that doesn't help each other. It's very much "your table is yours and mine is mine" aka; you get stuck with an overwhelmed server with too many tables and several staff walking through a field of flowers without a care in the world. I had broken chopsticks and it took me mentioning it three times before I got a new set. Food comes out slow and awkward. Ambiance: you're squished together like sardines. I could hear the table next to me loud and clear. So much so it was like I was enjoying their dinner with them. (They also love bamboo and had big feelings on the service here). The restaurant is overcrowded, awkward, and most importantly not friendly to those who would need more space. The decor is lacking. It's as if they decorated on wall and gave up. The managers had water bottles all over the sushi bar, and I really support this one but it's something I was ripped into as a young server so it's something I notice in a "high class" restaurant. Food: terrible. For the first time in my life I sent food back. It was awful. I feel awful for sending food back, but I simply could not eat it. I don't eat raw salmon so that's why I got the salmon cooked and it was absolutely incredible but my friend had it without any meat, he said it's incredible and so you're going to be happy whether you have it with or without meat, raw or cooked. Food is good. They would rather hold a table for two hours for a possible reservation than seat people that are there now. We waited over an hour and a group of the same size only waited 15 minutes because they complained. Lesson is if you're rude to them they might get you in quicker. It is very poorly run, they tell people they are full that night but never once did all their tables fill up. You're losing money by telling people it's an hour and a half wait but there are at least 6 tables open. read more

Bamboo on NW 23rd is my go-to for quality sushi. The menu is consistent yet evolves as needed. I love the yakumi style nigiri and sashimi; rolls are always good, too. My server was Hana and she was friendly, knowledgeable, and made me feel welcome. The ambiance at this location is one of my favorites; I love the mural in the back dining area and the miniature scenes in the front. Bamboo Sushi is my new favorite sushi spot. Each dish was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The Poke appetizer melts in your mouth with avocado, cucumber and a spicy sauce on top. The unicorn roll was very rich and wasn't overpowering with the chili or jalapeño sauce. We would order the cauliflower, unicorn roll and poke appetizer again! Each fish was so soft and buttery it wasn't like your normal sushi/ poke spot. When you first enter you are greeted by the smell of sugar from the neighboring Salt and Straw! One of my favorite date places or girl's night dinners! The place is situated on 23rd, which is so nice as there are many bars, desserts, and shops nearby that you can go to either before or after you eat. The ambiance of the restaurant is also very nice at night. It's a bit dimmer and pretty romantic. :) The staff here is also wonderful and very nice. My friend and I got seated at the bar and one of the chefs gave us a sample piece of sashimi out of the blue (on the round dish in my picture) and it was delicious. Overall, if you do get a chance to sit at the bar, I highly recommend it. Sitting at bar here really elevates the dining experience compared to a table seat. Week 40/52 in my endeavor to try one new (to me) local spot per week! Okay, okay, so this spot isn't in Seattle. BUT, we do have one in the U District so I'm taking it as a win and a deserved spot in this series of reviews that I do! (And will DEFINITELY be visiting the Seattle location). I digress. I had to circle the block for a good 15 minutes before finding a spot that I snagged around the corner. Once that was over, it was smooth sailing. But, something to be prepared for! It was a lot slower than I expected and was seated at the bar almost immediately. The bartender was nice - he was in training (or so it seemed) and kept having to ask others questions, and was super apologetic about it. Poor guy seemed nervous, but he was so kind and personable! I went with a California Roll and the Sunset. The California was delicious - light and fresh, as it should be. The Sunset was AMAZING. I'm a fan of anything with spicy tuna and this roll fit the bill. Seasoned crab, avocado, cucumber, topped with spicy tuna, spicy aioli and tempura crunchies - it was DELICIOUS. Highly recommend this one! For two glasses of wine and two rolls it was a little under $50. Kind of pricy, but worth it, in my opinion.
