To my delight, it came with super fresh cooked crab expertly removed from the shell and left in succulent chunks for maximum pleasure. The rest was perfect tender mixed sashimi professionally displayed on a bed of sticky soft tangy sushi rice. I loved discovering what each new fish tasted like. Huge fan. Bravo. Yes yes yes. Leave a little room for green tea mochi ice cream with simple chocolate sauce. I believe Mio has a few locations around Oregon and I'm so lucky to have one close to me (it's the original!)! The location I went to is definitely quaint and located right off of the bustling 23rd street area, so keep that in mind if you plan to go with a group. The service was excellent and the prices were reasonable. And of course, the fish was very fresh and high quality -- I was impressed! This is a great spot for date night or for some takeout. I ordered a miso soup, the bubble bubble roll, and the yellowtail + scallion roll. The miso was a little bit watered down but still really delicious. But I can't say enough good things about these rolls! The bubble bubble roll was filled with avocado and tobiko roe (the smaller roe) and topped with a generous amount of salmon and ikura roe (the larger roe). What made this roll unique was the thinly sliced piece of lemon on top -- and yes you're supposed to eat it! It added a refreshing bite that surprisingly complemented the fish and fish eggs really well. And lastly, one of my go-to's, the yellowtail and scallion roll. You can't really mess this one up and Mio nailed it. The pieces of yellowtail were generous and tender and packed a flavor punch with the crunchy scallion. When my order was picked up the person was extremely rude to the person picking it up (my son). Spicy salmon roll + onions NO THANKS. Avocados in our rolls were brown NO THANKS. I wouldn't have ordered seaweed salad and cucumber salad if I knew the seaweed salad was half cucumbers. Also no ginger or wasabi. They must have used all pulp from ginger for their salad dressing because that dressing was all pulp. This place never disappoints! I've only eaten inside once (I typically get to-go) and the ambiance is so cute. It is small and dimly lit for a very relaxing and cozy feel. The sushi line is on full display so you can see everything they make. My favorite rolls are the Salmon Mania and the Ahi Tataki, and when I really indulgent I like the coco roll- it's rich + sweet. Their motto "best quality at reasonable prices" is actually very accurate. The sushi quality here is amazing and even among the other locations, this one has especially good food quality. I tried the same rolls from this location on Johnson and another Mio location and the ones from here were far superior-- it was 5 times better. After trying the food here at least 4 times, I have to say this location in particular is extremely consistent and always looks and tastes amazing. Not only is the food good, the vibes are cozy and the owner and servers are friendly. Not to mention they have plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options. Great place to grab lunch :) read more

Lots of articles have appeared about how restaurants worked hard to figure out a better way of packaging food for delivery during the pandemic. We recently ordered two bento boxes from the Pearl District Mio; we were really impressed with the visual layout of the Bento box, the quality of the food, the quantity of the food, and the value proposition. Yes, of course some of the hot items were lukewarm at best, but that actually did not detract from our enjoyment. Miso soup, good quality rice, "standard" sushi restaurant salad with carrot ginger dressing. A spicy tuna roll and salmon teriyaki. I have to say, in the past, Mio always felt like a good value, even thought it was never one of the better sushi places in town. Sort of dependable B grade. But it just all seemed a bit better getting it at home. Yes, my standards and expectations have changed. Some better restaurants haven't figured out how to make their delivered food on par with an in-restaurant experience, and their competitive advantage faded. Mio, at least from this one experience, delivered something pretty comparable to dining in with them. Not an easy task. read more

I really appreciate Mio Sushi because they use quality fish at reasonable prices. The sushi always tastes fresh and good. I typically order the tuna roll and the Rainbow roll without cucumbers. But today, I should have specified without cucumbers and PLASTIC. Yep, there was plastic wrap in my Rainbow roll. I pointed this out to the server and her response was to say that the chef uses plastic wrap to make the sushi. Uhhh okay, I'm not a sushi chef, but I don't think it's supposed to be inside the roll at the end. I replied, that the plastic was inside the roll and the chef needs to be more careful. The response should have been "I'm sorry" not a defense of the plastic being inside my food. I even tried to be discreet about it because other diners were close to me and I genuinely like Mio Sushi. That all disappointed me, but then I thought maybe they'd make it right by reducing my bill, or maybe the chef would come to apologize, or something. Nope, I was charged full price and no apology. I don't mind paying for my meal, BUT THERE WAS PLASTIC WRAP IN IT and they did nothing to make the situation better. This location always tempts me because I both live and work in the area, but now I won't be so tempted to go here at least. UPDATE: Mio Sushi contacted me regarding my experience. The head server was very apologetic and wished to make things right. I greatly appreciated that her response included specific actions the restaurant is taking to improve, including bringing in someone to retrain the chefs to avoid future mistakes, and speaking with floor staff to improve customer service, specifically, not making excuses moving forward. I understand no one is perfect at their job, and how mistakes are handled is important to me. I am willing to give this location of Mio Sushi another chance. read more

Just like stepping into my Japanese friend's house where his mom is preparing food for a few more of his friends. It's a very casual joint and definitely all locals and regulars. My bff was craving sushi & since he was visiting, I had to follow suite. All the other sushi places I wanted to take him to were closed, so we finally landed here for some 23rd shopping on the side (for me more so than him). We ordered a few rolls (see pics for details because I can't ermember the names). There was one w/ asparagus & real crab topped w/ avocado & salmon. Another with tuna & avocado. Tempura & a baked dish called dynamite. We thought the dynamite would be a roll, but apparently we were confused. The rolls were good, but nothing was stellar or really stood out. The dynamite took significantly longer than anything else and was rather salty. It made is really want more sushi or rice or something to go alongside. The tables were awkwardly close and all I could do was listen to the next table's snooty conversation about how when they heard the economy was getting bad it really wouldn't affect them, but it is! Wow! Poor you. I also couldn't help but realize the other table next to us was sitting in complete silence to listen to our conversation. Near the end of the meal, without warning the waitress lifted the table next to us (with all their food on it & them still sitting there) closer to us so the new table could have more room. Really socially awkward to say the least. Perhaps the food was fresh, but the prices weren't especially cheap to warrant such a crowded place. Maybe I'm being a snob (though no where near the other table) or maybe it was the enviornment, but I wasn't too impressed with the food or the crowd. read more

Mio is a down to earth restaurant with friendly staff and fresh fish and I find myself craving the unique rolls here, particularly the Bubble Bubble Roll. That lemon slice texture doing a tango with the creamy Alaskan king salmon pairing with the little salty and savory explosions from the tobiko and ikura~so fresh and so yum. There are lots of one-of-a-kind rolls that you don't have to pay an arm for, which is another reason why I love Mio. Recommended items: combo goma salad (comes with shrimp, crab, and octopus on a bed of sweet and tangy goma seaweed and cucumber), tempura shrimp (the way they fry their shrimp is so crunchy and tasty), Bubble Bubble Roll, Sushi Pizza, Champon Noodle Soup. Also try their local special right now, the Aji Mackeral. I'm not a huge fan of mackeral but this one was so fresh with a light clean taste and I loved the ponzu sauce that came drizzled on it. They had incredibly unique but not overly dressed rolls with fresh rice, good fish, and a lot of rolls that didn't rely on sauces or tempurA. I got the bubble roll which I highly recommend- avocado, tobiko and shrimp tempura on the inside with salmon and more tobiko on top with a very thin slice of lemon. Unreal. On the menu, nearly all of the specialty rolls have sweet sauce in them: for me, the sign of a bad sushi place. Instead of ordering those, I ordered a combination that has about seven different kinds of fish on top of rice. Not quite sashimi but similar. It was completely average and unremarkable. The hamachi/yellowtail, my fave, was kind of mushy. And there was one type of fish I have never seen or tasted before that was so distinctly fishy and questionable. I didn't take more than one bite. My cats wouldn't eat it. So, I ate everything but the bad part. It tasted 0K and I didn't get food poisoning. But I probably wouldn't go back. read more

An old favorite for this downtown worker. Went in for the first time yesterday since COVID. What a HUGE disappointment. This place used to be spotlessly clean both inside and out with well-tended tables and chairs for sidewalk dining. No longer. First thing you notice is that the front door is broken and appears to have been in that state for months. Inside, the tables are greasy and the previous meticulously organized dining room is a cluttered mess. They seem to be far more attentive to the stream of take-out orders than to the actual diners (even though the dining room was practically empty at lunchtime). Then at the end of the meal the waiter/owner brings over his credit card device and stands over you eagle-eyed while you decide how much of a tip to select on the device. I went hoping for a relaxing enjoyable lunch and returned to the office in a bad mood. There must have been a change in ownership - a change decidedly for the worse. Our server was friendly and mostly attentive, though it took us a while to get our bill once a few more groups had filtered in for dinner. I was imagining a solid three star rating--the sushi was nothing to write home about but didn't give me the sense that I would have explosive diarrhea later--until I tried the tempura roll. It had definitely not been made recently. I think i would have been less concerned if it had been cold, indicating refrigeration. No. It was simply room temperature.
