Ever since the long time corner Japanese restaurant on Geary Blvd and 25th avenue has left, many variety of businesses have come and gone. But I think this new drink and dessert place has found a permanent home. The newest drink place was opened in the middle of January of 2013. But the official grand-opening was on Ground Hog day (2/2). As I walked in, I see five people ahead of Joe Cool. As I was waiting for my turn to order, I was looking at menu posted on the wall (or grab a to-go menu) of a variety of blended beverages in both English and Vietnamese. When it was my turn to order, I ordered, the Bambu special. For $4.25, the specialty drink contains coconut meat, pandan jelly, longan, & basil seed mixed in with coconut juice. I am not sure if this drink is popular in the Vietnamese culture. But you get the potassium of the coconut juice with the colorful and tasty pandan jelly and the unique texture of the basil seed with pieces of coconut and longan in one cup. I would have ordered something different if I knew my che was going to be missing a key component. Also, how are they out of boba at 3pm? It is opening week and they should expect a lot of business and not run out of something so crucial as boba. We arrived 15 minutes prior to closure and it was busy as if it was lunch time. I ordered the coconut Tra Sura (milk tea), which was rich in milk and coconut flavor. Everyone knows that one of my biggest guilty pleasures when it comes to food (not that this is really a food...) is tapioca (or boba, if you want to be fancy). One of my friends recommended this place to me and told me that it's better than t-pumps (that's a pretty bold statement)! I enjoyed the bubble tea here. The place is mostly for vietnamese dessert drinks (which someday I'd like to try), but they offer bubble tea like many other stores on Geary. The tea itself was quite tasty. I had the black milk tea for just about $4. It was sweet and refreshing. The tapioca wasn't as tasty as I'd like. My friend and I saw this from the 29 bus, looked it up on yelp, and decided to give it a try! The free add ins really attracted us too. We got the Jasmine Milk Tea for $2.75 so we could play around with the fillings. After a long debate with the patient and helpful cashier lady, we got the red tapioca(chewy tapioca texture with a satisfying crunch inside-NOT like those syrupy "popping boba"), pandan jelly (green long noodles), coffee jelly (mini brown cubes), and mungbean (dense, yellow, slightly textured bean mixture without a strong flavor. i prefer this much better than red bean!) The mungbean went great with the longan, but I recommend a spoon none the less. The drink was made super fast, too! Next we ordered the #9 Dessert (Suong sao banh lot) which comes with coconut milk, grass jelly(long, brownish noodles), and pandan jelly. We added basil seed(sorta looks like soaked chia seeds), longan (wasn't sure what this looked like...), white bean(soft beans), lotus(looks like mini lychee, but tastes like nuts, jackfruit(looks like mango but has a starchy texture), red tapioca, and we got one random lychee. It comes with a scoop of shaved ice, but the coconut milk made it melt real fast and the milk was too rich and sweet for me. I've been a fan of Bambu in San Jose for a really long time. So I was extremely excited when I saw that there was opened in SF. I ordered the che trai cay which is the Vietnamese dessert with mixed fruits. It comes with coconut milk, jackfruit, red tapioca, longan, lychee, palm seed, pandan jelly, jello, and young coconut. I felt that this dessert was too watered down, possibly from all the ice that was added. The pandan jelly was really chewy and the color seemed a little off. It felt as if the ingredients weren't very fresh and I was disappointed. My sister ordered the soursop smoothie with red tapioca. The soursop smoothie was very good. It really does taste like soursop. They gave a decent amount of red tapioca. We also ordered black milk tea with red tapioca and dark brick. The milk tea was strong and the perfect amount of sweetness. What I really like about this Bambu is that they allow you to add as many toppings as you like. You can pretty much customize your own drinks at no additional cost. If you go during their happy hour: Monday - Friday from 6-8 pm, you can buy three drinks and get one free. It is a little pricier than their South Bay stores. However, it is understandably since everything in SF is more expensive. That said, I feel disappointed with their che. It's what Bambu is known for and I felt that the dessert was a little bland. Maybe it was because they added too much ice, which melted and diluted the dessert. I was also disappointed that the ingredients didn't seem as fresh as it could be, or that they didn't have pearls ready yet when we came by to order. What a disappointment! I read the forewarned reviews on long lines and slow service, but brushed other people's opinions aside because I really wanted to try this place. Metered parking along Geary street wasn't too difficult to find. Stood in line for about 15 mins only to realize I haven't moved at all! My party and I sorta patiently waited but I mumbled that I can literally drive to San Jose, grab Bambu from there. Teehee. After 40 mins in line, baking in the strange, warm SF weather, we made it inside the entry way but then had to feed the parking meter. Another 20 mins fed. While anxiously deciding on which item to get, I see the cash register chick taking phone orders. (Now dammit, why didn't I call in advance!) For a busy store front, one should NOT be taking phone orders too or at least have two staff members working the front. 10 mins goes by, I'm at the counter. Hallelujah! Place our orders (#15, #3 and one of the Strawberry Fantasy). Both Che were watered down. Full of ice, crap load of red beans, and bland taste of coconut juice/milk. I typically order #15 at other locations and they are oh so satisfying, but this was an upset. The Strawberry Fantasy actually was the most decent drink, comparable to Jamba Juice. Service: First -- The management team need to rethink their efficiency. Should have more than one person take orders. Second -- Label the drinks! Before I placed my order, the chick had to tell the party waiting for their drinks, which drink was what. I mean Sharpie the cups. Many of the combos are similar so hard to tell when the customer is looking at their cups. That caused me another minute or two line. Parking: Give or take. That's really cool of them, to be honest. Also, the drinks were very reasonably priced. The only reason why I gave this place 2.5 stars is that all four of our drinks were SO bland and our dessert beverage was kind of watered down. That in itself left me very unimpressed. My mango dazzle smoothie with mango jelly wasn't so flavorful. The mung bean/grass jelly in coconut milk (#12) was watery to the point where you can only taste a hint of coconut milk. It also takes a very special person with magical powers, apparently, to make an almond milk tea just right without tasting too synthetic, if that makes sense. The Thai milk tea was probably better than the other drinks, though. Overall, I'm not sure if I'll be going back. Favorite Vietnamese dessert drinks! Parking is kind of a hassle tho in this area since it's on the corner of Geary St but if you go at night, you should be able to find meter parking right away. I usually order the avocado drink with little ice. Most of their desserts are pretty good and filling. They have quite a lot of different drinks and I haven't tried them all yet but definitely would love to. I also had their three color drink and it was pretty good. They have regular milk tea drinks also if you're not a fan of the dessert drinks. I first fell in love with Bambu after I tried it in Sacramento and I'm so glad they have them here in the city. The no lychee thing isn't a big enough reason to not love/crave this place but it is annoying. I ordered a smoothy from there - the like strawberry smoothy. It tastes just like Jamba Juice but more fruity rather than that. Another nice thing is that you can add free toppings. I took a sip of the iced green tea. It was not bad. I don't have particularly much to say about this place vs my other reviews for places. In terms of parking it's a bit hard to find parking there. We came with a party of three and we all ordered different types of che. The service was very efficient and friendly. The che was very fresh and all the toppings were delicious. #1 is very unusual for those unfamiliar with Southeast Asian beverages and is very unlike bubble tea. However, it was very refreshing and light. For a richer treat, any of the other che drinks with coconut milk will hit the spot. After looking over their menu, we both decided on #10, which was red tapioca, grass and pandan jelly with coconut milk. Our drinks were ready in less than 10 mins. I've never had red tapioca before and so I was pleasantly surprised by its texture and taste. The grass and pandan jelly were a good addition to the drink, but I somehow felt the drink was a little too sweet, not overwhelming though.
