Chicken Satay
Daniel K.

Not a prime example of Thai food, and you can certainly find better in St. Paul if you drive out little further. This place is tucked on 3rd St in downtown White Bear Lake. Don't expect a parking lot, in this area you'll just park right on the street, but there should be plenty of spaces all around the area. I ordered 3 items: Chicken Pad Thai, Chicken Satay and a side of jasmine rice. Pad Thai: Frankly, this is the first Pad Thai I've ever eaten with cilantro in it. Pad Thai is a staple and usually the most approachable food item for first time visits at a Thai restaurant. Its supposed to be a blend of sour, sweet and salty. The dominant flavor in the Pad Thai was sour. You get the brightness of the lime, but the main sour component comes from the tamarind. I wish that it was more salty and sweet. I felt like the earthienss of the cilantro took away from the other flavor components and kept it relatively muted and one dimensional. Also, the Styrofoam takeout box was stained orange on the bottom. Not entirely sure why, but after seeing that, I didn't really want to finish it. Next time I'd skip on this and get something else. Chicken Satay: I got 5 plump skewered pieces of chicken that were surprisingly very juicy and flavorful. I enjoyed this the most. It comes with a peanut sauce, but unfortunately it was underwhelming. It was quite watery, compared to a thick peanut sauce that I'm accustomed to eating. Usually it is also accompanied with lightly picked cucumber in a sweet vinegar sauce, but here you'll just find sliced cucumbers and carrots that don't really do much for the satay. Side of "Jasmime Rice": What was packed in the little takeout box was not jasmine rice. It was parboiled white rice. I know because I got this stuff at home and didn't want to eat it so that's why I ordered jasmine rice. I was disappointed because I was served something else. Please do your customers a favor and serve what you say you're going to give them.

Vegan fried rice, add fried tofu and broccoli or asparagus

I own a vegan bakery a block away and always get my lunch or dinner here. There's isn't much time for me to cook or run to get vegan food near here. I call the owner/chef Mama Oh, because she cooks so many of my meals! I always have long conversations with her when I go pick up my food. She can basically make any dish vegan. Just ask. Never gives me any grief. Loves to accommodate. I love cilantro, so I always ask for extra and now she just automatically adds more when I forget to ask! I've had vegan pho, pad Thai, fried rice, curry, fat noodles, skinny noodles... A lot of things. I recently tried romein. I think it's ramen and lomein. I don't know, but it hit the spot right on. I usually request fried tofu in my dishes. They have mock duck too. Inside dining is clean and spacious. Food is great. Owner is super nice. Her daughter and husband work there too. I'm usually starving by the time I get my food so I haven't taken many photos. If you're in White Bear lake (and vegan!) and want Thai food , definitely stop here!

Chicken Pad Thai 2 Star

Chicken was nice and tender. Sauce was a bit different than expected. Good! But different. Fast service!

Over priced for salty food. Also as a restaurant giving out plastic food ware. Waited forever to get my food. All the while the owners were cussing and swearing back and forth about charges. Very disappointed and highly dissatisfied! Not coming back to here. Don't waste your time either.

Always on the hunt for some really good Wonton Soup.. unfortunately, I didn't find it. Ordered…read moresome wonton soup and it wasn't what I was used to. It had a ton of vegetables which typically I don't mind, but the broth and dumplings just tasted odd. Other food ordered: Appetizer platter- chicken wings, tempura shrimp, fried wontons, cream cheese wontons Pork pad thai- had nice big chunks of pork. It was okay. The service was great, but the flavors for me- I just wasn't a fan. Prices are a tad high.

He made the food and she took the orders. By the time we were leaving it was pretty busy and she was rushing around trying to so everything plus taking walk out orders. I am vegan and explained that to her and they were able to accommodate me. I got the Szechuan Kung pao tofu. I got it spicy level 3/5 it did have some back heat but overall the initial tasted somewhat sweet. The tofu was nicely fried and there was a good bit and a good variety of vegetables. My mom got the Thai basil supreme with shrimp which had a red curry base. She got it spicy 4/5 and said it wasn't spicy and that mine was actually spicier. Overall we both enjoyed our food but the dishes were expensive. I don't know that I would rush back but it was good.

Tasty Viet- Chinese restaurant. Stopped by here for dinner to catch up with a friend. The…read morerestaurant is standalone with plenty of parking. We walked in and sat wherever you'd like. The chairs and tables were the type you'd expect at a Vietnamese restaurant; iykyk. The guy was prompt and brought our menus which was pretty slim being a double sided landscaped. More a Chinese restaurant than Viet, but it did have a section for Bun and Pho. Entree: Kung Pao Chicken It was tasty, the brown sauce was fairly generic, but in a good way. Like you'd want the consistency in a neighborhood restaurant, but you wouldn't drive out your way to get it. The chicken could use a bit more quality control since there were some grizzly pieces, but not enough to ruin the meal. The vegetables had a good crunch and were expected in a kung pao dish; carrots, onion, celery, peanuts. The portion was generous enough for leftovers or one very hungry adult male.

I ordered food online from them recently (administered thru GrubHub) and when I went to pick it up, there was a sign saying they were closed due to a sudden family emergency. I sincerely hope all is well for them. However, I didn't receive any food on a $55 order. As it was over the weekend, my wife called on Monday asking for a refund as we had given them a decent amount of money for us, but received nothing in return. The person she spoke to told us there was no manager who had access to the GrubHub account, but took our information and promised to resolve it. No answer as of today (Thursday) so I stopped in in-person. I was initially offered a cash refund. Until the person on duty spoke to the manager by phone. He told her it was a GrubHub problem and they couldn't refund money on a credit card purchase. So that was it. thanks for the money, now go away, not our problem. I reached out to GrubHub by chat and was told they couldn't find my order and therefore, wouldn't be offering a refund either. (that's a whole other story.) GrubHub later called back and said, still no refund, but the merchant was willing to offer a 10% discount on my next order. Huh?! I just gave you $55 you refused to give me back for giving me nothing! there isn't going to BE a next order from me, and likely the remainder of my family. I realize it's two entirely different groups saying it's the other one's problem. but Ha Long Bay ALWAYS had the option of doing right by their customers, regardless of who was at fault technically. But they chose not to. And when I called Ha Long Bay 45 minutes before their stated close time to give them one more chance, it went to voice mail. So, I guess I'm looking for a new place for great Pho.
