People in this place killed our little dog ultimately.

I'm a 72 year old man, who lives with the wife, and the companion dog, the best friend, a little chiwawa. His name was ET. He was KILLED by Banfield Pet Hospital in Citrus Heights due to their carelessness and negligence ultmately. My wife's heart aches and she is in tears whenever thinking of the suffering ET had gone through and his helpless eyes. ET was very loving and brave, had no fear at all. We did our best to give him the best care possible. I noticed ET was bothered by a tooth infection. We gave him antibiotics and it worked fine. Other than that, ET was in very good shape. On June 19, 2022, after a checkup, the doctor recommended that ET's infected teeth should be pulled, and ET would have a much better life. We wanted to do the best for ET as we possibly could. The doctor looked really kind to me, and I decided to proceed. I took ET home after the surgery on August the 15th and the nightmare started. Once ET became a little bit conscious from the drug, he started crying nonstop. He was horrified and in extreme fear. I had to hold him all the time. He lost his little voice and was still crying. My wife said, "It looked like he had gone through some horrible things during the surgery. What the doctor had done to him?" Seeing ET suffering so much was breaking both of our hearts. ET was a dog, not able to tell what happened to him during the surgery, but we found he had many new issues which he never had before. FIRST, ET dropped his jaw many times every day. He was in pain when that happened. I had to help him gently put his jaw back each time. He couldn't eat normally because of his jaw problem. We believe they pulled his jaw carelessly during the oral surgery, and therefore damaged his jaw badly. THE next thing was ET lost focus. He couldn't see things right. He hit on the door when he was walking, or a wall or something all the time. He was in extreme fear and restless, had to hold him almost all day and night to help him sleep, and just to calm him down. THIRD, ET frequently uncontrolled back off and fell to his side. It looked like he had nerve damage or something. Just his one side of his body seemed to be very weak. THE fourth thing I noticed, the most scared for us was that ET had a spasm a few times a day. He would be depleted every time after the spasm, and it took him a long time to recover. It was definitely due to the nerve damage or something. It never happened before the surgery. ET was becoming weaker and weaker. 41 days elapsed; I was hoping ET would be getting better because the doctor said so. On September 24th, around 4 o'clock in the afternoon ET started having to spasm again, no matter what we did I couldn't help him stop. He was crying. He would be having the spasm for a while and become unconscious, then wake up having a spasm back and forth. Until 9 o'clock in the evening I realized ET was not able to make it this time. I took ET to emergency room. The doctor told me ET was suffering a lot and it would be best to put him down. Our dog had been suffering tremendously since the surgery which Banfield Pet Hospital had performed. I truly believe ET was brutally treated during the surgery and created so much physical and mental trauma and damage on his little body which ultimately caused his death. Dogs cannot talk, cannot pretend and they cannot lie. It's obvious that from what ET had gone through, it was the surgery that killed ET. of course, people who performed the surgery. We deeply regretted to put ET under Banfield's hospital's care which ultimately caused his death. ET should have lived a good life longer than that without having the surgery instead of so much suffering, damage and trauma. Now is the holiday season. I sorely miss my little ET which for 12 and half years was my very best friend. I pray that he's in a better place. Video link: https://youtu.be/lsMTCR6fwio

**update: you can see below that Lisa R from Banfield says they saw my post on another site and contacted me there. They are referring to a Facebook post that I wrote, and as of the time I am writing this, they have not actually responded to my Facebook message.** We had a horrible experience here today. Vet told us that our dog needed a emergency surgery and his intestines were permanently damaged because he had an obstruction in his stomach. She told us to go to the ER and be prepared for emergency surgery that would require 3 to 5 days of recovery time. When we went to the ER, and $1200 later, we learned that there was absolutely nothing in his stomach. The "obstruction" she thought she "saw" in his stomach is what a dog's stomach looks like from the side in an x-ray! How would a vet not know this?! That level of incompetence is absolutely staggering. Avoid this vet at all costs!

Instead of focusing on the likely timeline of my dog's issue (such as how a UTI or infection might progress if that's what he has), the visit shifted into a male dog anatomy lesson on Google. I already had some background knowledge--which he didn't check for--but what I needed was guidance on possible health scenarios and what to watch for progressively. When I tried to ask more detailed questions, it felt difficult to keep the conversation on track. During the exam, he had on jeans, socks with Birkenstock-style sandals, with a scrub top. While attire isn't the most important element in delivering top quality care, in a hospital setting open-toed or sandal-style footwear usually violates safety / biosecurity requirements as it increases the risk of animal scratches, exposure to fluids or slipping. If that wasn't enough to feel a bit uncomfortable with this doctor, he also took it upon himself to bring up an old employee discount my partner once had and referred to him as my "boyfriend" without knowing our relationship. I had already clarified at the start of our visit that the discount no longer applied, so his comment felt unnecessary and personal, and I perceived it as biased. Overall, I left with concerns about how communication was handled. I later saw that some reviewers also had negative experiences with Dr. Gonsier's bedside manner, which made me feel my visit wasn't unique. My goal in sharing this is not to call anyone out, but to underline that professionalism and clear communication really matter in a space that is saturated with sub-par experiences. When those pieces are missing, trust and comfort in the care being provided can slip. I am fortunate that money is not an issue in being able to care for my pets, but doing business with a hospital that has someone like Dr. Gonsier on the team doesn't leave me feeling great about a long term relationship.

My dog was brought back to me and I was told a critical animal came in and the doctor would have to try to stabilize that pet before she could come talk to me. I appreciated being kept informed. When Dr. Lenz came into the room she apologized for the delay which was nice but not expected at all, I totally understand these things happen. It's just like being in the human ER. We were treated with kindness the whole time. I was never pressured to agree to extra testing. Dr. Lenz told me what was suggested and let me decide. I sent this email to them on 1/3, and I haven't received a response yet. Even when this incident occurred, the staff was attentive and went above and beyond to try to resolve the situation. I'm posting this for education to anyone who has a cat. This is a copy of my email on 1/3: Good morning, I wanted to personally write instead of posting a review on Yelp, about our experience when we brought Maple in on Sunday, December 28th. Our family has a long history of pets that we have brought in over the years, and we have never had a negative experience in any way, in fact, I have always spoke highly of the entire staff there when recommending to friends and family. I want to start off by staying that our experience on 12/28 was not a negative one with regards to the staff, but I am writing this email to bring something to your attention in hopes of educating staff to prevent this from happening in the future (and yes, it's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" when cats are involved!). Maple has been very sick and multiple visits to her regular vet and your emergency, have happened the past month. We brought her to emergency on 12/28 in hopes of finding out what was wrong and finding a solution. Maple is a very nervous cat and doesn't like strangers, and she really did not like having anything shoved up her butt when she has been in a lot of discomfort due to the diarrhea. Maple was examined, then taken to the room for further testing. I wish I would have objected, but I trusted that staff would do their very best with regard to safety. Unfortunately, Maple escaped their hold and tried to find a place to hide, which was inside an open cabinet where there was an opening to the underside of the steel exam table. I'm sure I don't need to state how dangerous this is and could have been if the outcome was different. Cats are very unpredictable creatures, and after we were invited to go back to the room to try to coax her out, I was surprised at the lack of secure spaces for cats. I want to add that this ordeal ended up being just short of 9 hours at. We tried everything to get her out. This was an extremely stressful and upsetting time for my daughter and I and resulted in my being awake for 24 hours. My daughter ended up calling in sick for work since we left the vet around 6am. I was doing my best not to be upset at staff, but I feel like looking back, there is a bit of negligence on their part. My request is that staff is educated, more careful, and that there is some type of plan in place to mitigate any future occurrences. Maple was lucky. We were lucky that she didn't have a serious health condition and that she was healthy enough to be in that hole for that length of time. My ask is that you also find out from the manufacturer if there is a cover for the inside of that exam table, so that in the off-chance staff leaves that door open, that another cat will not have the same experience as Maple did. I look forward to your response.

They "only" charged $3400 for the cleanings, and failed to ask us if we are OK for them to remove all teeth from what used to be one of our dog's cute overbite. We also had to pay another $1500 for a follow-up emergency visit because they injured the other dog (and failed to tell us about it). Doctor must have a twisted sense of reality, because they told me the dogs did "fantastic" when I was called after the procedure. Dog 1: Permanent Disfigurement without Consent They extracted all six lower incisors from one of my dogs without a single phone call to discuss the necessity or get my consent. They effectively destroyed his signature look and "overbite" forever. We dropped off our cute dog and picked up a "small beast" with only two visible lower canines, all because they couldn't be bothered to pick up the phone. And I will be requesting the x-rays and get a second opinion in the necessity of the extractions, because the other incident described below shattered my confidence in their competence. Dog 2: Injury and Cover-Up While my other dog was under anesthesia, the staff managed to lacerate both of his ears while trimming his face. Let that sink in: they cut a dog that was chemically immobilized and not moving. Even worse, the doctor called me afterward and emphatically stated both dogs did "fantastic," choosing to deliberately hide the injuries. They didn't mention a word of it during the face-to-face pickup, either. Dog 2: Late night emergency follow-up visit We only discovered the injured ears after getting home. When we called, they downplayed the cuts as "no big deal" and admitted they had used skin glue to fix one cut. They didn't even provide an e-collar. A few hours later, my dog was bleeding profusely--blood was literally pooling on the floor. We had to rush him to an emergency vet where we discovered the cuts were so deep they required actual sutures. Because of this clinic's "minor" mistake, my small dog had to be put under anesthesia twice in less than 12 hours. And we had to foot a $1500 emergency bill, after an incident that traumatized our family.
