Bangkok Thai is a BYOB restaurant located right in down town Geneva. There Chicken Pad Thai is my favorite item on their menu. I usually order it spicy. Their Tom Yum soup is consistently good too. I usually order it with chicken instead of shrimp. I would like to see more colorful options on their menu like Szechwan chicken (a Thai dish loaded with carrots and bright peppers). read more

Bangkok Restaurant is a gem of a place in the far west suburbs of Chicago. I eat there every time I'm visiting home. The restaurant itself is small and BYOB but is always bustling. The food is simply first-class; best of all, it's home-cooked, and feels fresh and hearty, unlike some other Thai restaurants. Honestly, this is the best Thai food I have ever had outside of Thailand itself. And I've been to probably 200+ Thai restaurants around the world. Portion sizes are large and I always have leftovers. Make sure to try their green curry or their pad ped ma muang (cashew stir fry) or pad graw paw (basil stir fry) which are well-spiced, delicious and fresh. They also use high quality ingredients from their vegetables to their tofu. This place is really special and stands out as one of the best Thai restaurants in Chicagoland. read more

This is a decent Thai restaurant. The service ranges from a little above average to a little below average, the food is a little too salty, and they tend to overcook tofu a little, but there's a lot of variety on the menu and the staff is always on top of refills. They make the pad si eaw with bean sauce rather than a sweet soy sauce, so if this the style you prefer, you should try this dish here. The dishes that feature sweet chili sauce are also pretty good--they balance the heat of the chilis with the sweetness of the sauce very well. Unfortunately, they don't have a desert menu, but they do give you a Thai fortune cookie with the check. If this was in Chicago or even Des Plaines, I probably would pass it over, but since it's the only Thai food around here and they do a decent job, I've been here a few times and will probably be back again. They seem like nice people at this restaurant so I feel bad for writing this, but--- This is how bad my meal here was: I just registered for Yelp for the purpose of bashing them. I have eaten at multiple Thai restaurants in 10 different U.S. and European metropolitan areas and I have never had a meal this bad. I thought it would be decent, given that it's been at this location forever. A mistake. My meal was carry-out. Normally I order spicy basil or curry dishes at Thai restaurants but I was craving Squid Pad Thai so that's what I ordered. Salty, salty, salty. It tasted like a pack of Ramen noodles. Actually I think that's what it was. Squid was 2.00 extra and there was maybe 3 or 4 tiny pieces of squid, along with unidentifiable mystery meat. Not near enough vegetables either. Did I mention salty? Crazy salty. Salt-lick salty. Atlantic Ocean salty. I took a few bites and threw it out. They also put the wrong appetizer in my to-go and since the bag was stapled shut I didn't notice until I got home. Awful. Shameful. Just terrible. I wish I could give this place negative 5 stars. read more

Love this place! I was addicted for a while when I worked nearby, but I got transferred and only get there every couple of weeks now. Super friendly people, great prices, and wonderful food. All curries are awesome. You also can't go wrong with anything on the menu from #46-53. The only thing I have a problem with is choosing what I want to order. Nice cozy, homey feel inside. Mmm...tasty and BYOB - Bonus! The food is good and it is authentic! Service was very nice and friendly. Item #1, chicken sa-tae (satay) was excellent. The meat was super tender and their peanut sauce is really nice and slightly sweet. We also ordered a Tom Ga soup to share and it was good, but perhaps a little over lime-y. I would have preferred it to be more savoury. The chicken was rubbery and I thought they could have done a better job. The #53 was really delicious but I have to minus 1 star because of one BIG problem I had - the chef doesn't use fresh minced garlic. Other than that, the thai garlic sauce is very nice and garlicky - the shrimp was fresh and perfectly prepared! Preminced garlic (aka, the big plastic jars sold at Costco) have a very unique taste. Granted, it has been a few years since I've been here, but it remains the best Thai food I've had. I grew up in the area and had my first Thai food here; since then, I've tried just about every Thai restaurant in Chicago and just can't seem to find a place that matches up. What I do remember well is this: their satay is wonderful. Also, their curry is hot (if you ask for it).... I mean hot, really really hot. Not many places do "hot" right. I just went here for lunch and I was NOT expecting to have to pay $20! Only after a party of people had gotten their bill, the waitress said that there was a $15 minimum! I don't like to carry cash and had already ordered an $8 plate of rice (which had almost no flavor), so after I finished I had to order another plate of food for carry-out. I feel like the prices are reasonable but make sure that you have cash on you if you are ordering anything under $15. I also think that they should clean the ceiling vents every so often, nobody likes to eat while looking at caked dust stuck on a ceiling vent. I can really only see myself going back if a group of people that I am with are insisting on eating there for either lunch or dinner. read more

This is THE best Thai food you will get in miles! After living in Chicago I still couldn't find Thai as delicious of authentic as the hole-in-the-wall in Geneva. The people who run Bangkok Restaurant are wonderful! They're very friendly and helpful. If you want to try something new just ask them, they have never failed me. I used to work down the street and I would get lunch/dinner here almost daily. The atmosphere is definitely hole-in-the-wall status and if you're expecting anything else you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. This restaurant has always impressed me on many levels. Let's start with the restaurant itself. The decor inside is simple but that's not always bad. It offers enough of a Thai atmosphere to make you feel more connected with their food. The room is generally small so it seems louder than it really is, but it's not too loud where you have trouble enjoying your meal. The customer service is excellent. The owners and employees are from Thailand and English is their second language. They speak English very well, but if you have a hard time understanding each other be patient with them. They are very kind and welcoming. If you are a frequent customer they usually offer you some kind of incentive to come back; usually free spring rolls with every visit along with a warm welcome and farewell. The food is amazing period. No matter what you order it is always guaranteed to be delicious and the food is served quickly. The chefs are very skilled in making the Thai dishes on the menu. The menu may seem generally small, but this allows the chefs to prepare and cook the food very well. If you cannot handle a lot of spice in your food, they ask how spicy you want your food. Honestly, the spice makes the food in some of their dishes. If you have a hard time handling spice, I suggest looking for a peanut sauce based dish. The Pad Thai is a peanut sauce based noodle dish and it is one of my favorite items on the menu. If you have the extra money, try one of Bangkok's specialty drinks. The Thai Iced Coffee is extremely delicious, just be sure to mix it. Overall, this restaurant is always a guaranteed excellent choice. The customer service is superb, the food is well prepared and cooked, and the atmosphere is modest but intimate. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and I will be returning frequently. read more

We really do not visit Thai restraurants much but we won a gift certificate in a raffle. What a great opportunity to try this out. We loved this place. We started with a Sa-Tae and Paw Pia Tod appetizers. Both were pretty good with the Sa-Tae being our favorite in a nice peanut sauce. For the main course my wife ordered the Pa-Naeng (Mild) and I the Mussamun Nuea (Medium spicy). We sampled each other's and I still preferred mine. Could have been just a bit spicier but if I wanted spicier, I should have ordered the Hot then. :-) The prices were awesome and our dinner for two with appetizers was around $35. Not bad at all. (They do not serve alcohol here) The decor is simple and this is truly a little neighborhood restraurant. It did get pretty loud when two large parties arrived and that's the only reason we dropped a star. It became hard to hear each other. Highly recommend this place. read more

Ordered food here on the afternoon of New Years Eve. I should have known something was up when all the other Asian restaurants we called weren't even answering the phone but Bangkok said our food would be ready in 20 minutes. We ordered Tom Ka soup, chicken satay and a couple different chicken entrees. The tom ka soup was watery, salty and too citrusy. The chicken in all dishes was tough and tasteless. Portions were smaller than expected. Not the worst I've ever had but it was a disappointment to me and my wife and our guests. Also a little off putting when someone (owner? Owner's family?) walked in the front door with a child and a small dog and walked straight into the back of the restaurant. Probably won't be back, there are too many better choices for Thai in the area. read more

To all those who say this is the "best thai food in the suburbs" I can only imagine that you've never had truly good Thai food before, and for that, I'm sorry. That's kind of like saying Taco Bell is the best mexican you can get in the suburbs... Anyway, I am all for hole in the wall charm, especially if the food is stellar, but this went a bit past that to dirty and ramshackle. Service was spotty-- I had to grab a passing person to let them know we were ready to order after 20 minutes of waiting. Spring rolls had sausage in them...I've had Thai food in lots of places (though I confess, never Thailand) and I've never run across sausage in a spring roll. Ok. Fine. I'll try something different, I thought. The sausage had no flavor and was chewy. It added nothing, and messed up what is otherwise I very hard appetizer to screw up. As I always do at a new Thai place, I ordered the Pad Thai. If they can't do the basics right, then I know I'm in trouble. It was resoundingly blah. Not bad, not good. Noodles were overcooked, there was only a handful of bean sprouts, no cilantro and no lime. Tofu was decent. Companion had the "red" curry, which came to the table looking green. Fine. Green curry works, too, but he specifically ordered red curry. This was probably the highlight of the meal. He asked for medium spicy and actually got medium spicy. I'm so used to places dumbing down the spice for the gringos. Nice heat, good kick. Chicken actually tasted like chicken. The trip to the bathroom was pretty disturbing (it's the kind of old and grimy bathroom that could still be "clean" but the 20+ years of wear, tear, dirt and dust soaked into the walls and floor will shine through every time). There was a weird door to nowhere in the bathroom, and it's directly across from the kitchen and the garbage. Ambience!! I don't anticipate going back. For those who want good Thai food, I highly recommend Vino Thai. Excellent every time, great service, clean, and nearly every time I'm there, there is at least one Thai family eating there. read more

My husband and I came here for lunch. Food is great. Flavor is good meat and veggies plenty in dishes. They don't take tip on a card though... so sucks for those who don't carry cash. I guess they would just get no tip?? Bathrooms are pretty... let's say hole in the wall. It's def hole in the wall. The food here is excellent. The place is small - maybe 6-8 tables? We went and there were 2 tables with about 6-7 people each and it was a little loud (6 people - 8 bottles of wine you figure it out). The service was ok - not overly friendly but quick and efficient. The food is the highlight though. The prices are inexpensive and the portions generous. The place is BYOB as other reviewers mentioned and it is busy almost all of the time. Beware! They cook with MSG. My wife is allergic to it and we only learned about it when she started to have a reaction. The waitress explained that it comes in some of the sauces they purchase from the outside, which means not everything you get there is made from scratch. The prices and service were good. A little restaurant that is a big-time contender when it comes to flavor. The Panang curry and Tom Kha soup are respectable in spice and creamy texture. We love this friendly little place. We love Thai food, and found this authentic place while trying a few of the new "yuppy-ish" Thai restaurants that open and close. The owners and cooks are all Thai, and they say the food is authentic to the country, not American-ized. I don't know, but I DO know I love it! From Thai iced tea, spring rolls, soups and beef salad (Yum Nuea is THE best!) through all the different rice and noodle dishes and curry-favored meals, we can't get enough of it. This place deserves a 5 star review. It is an authentic, hidden gem in the heart of downtown Geneva. I stopped in for a quick lunch with friends and decided to order a few plates for everyone to share. The shrimp rolls and vegetable rolls were absolutely amazing. Best I have ever had anywhere, hands down. I wish I could exaggerate at how amazing they were but I can't. They have a spicy sausage salad, which had enough heat to give it a kick and allow for an abundance of other flavor. Whoever wrote the bad review about the pad thai must have been having an awful day to start. It was full of flavor and there was enough on the plate to share. The sweet and sour sauce balanced the peanut flavor which I believe can sometimes be a little too much on a dish. All in all I wish this place was in Chicago where I live. I will absolutely come back when visiting the suburbs. read more

Geneva is becoming overrun by sprawl and strip malls. Whenever I come back to visit, I make sure to limit most of my activities to downtown Geneva because the merchants are worth supporting, appreciative and proud of their businesses. Bangkok is worthy of a visit whether you're enjoying Geneva for a day or are a resident of the tri-cities. Jason S. (see below) and I have eaten here together many times over the years. I ate here on Friday with my husband and son. The first thing I noticed was that the folks at the host station / pay station were kind of startled when we walked up. We had to spell out, "Hi, we are here to...eat." That was the main odd thing. The food was pretty good. Spring rolls for appetizer. Tasted fresh. We had #26 and #30 for entrees. My most favorite was the deep fried noodle in #30. I've never tasted anything like it. Really enjoyed it. The night ended with a sweet note, when one of the ladies who worked there came up to our table and gave our son (who is a year and a half old) a chocolate candy. Went here on a friend's recommendation. Atmosphere is like an old diner in other words - none! Service was VERY slow. Green curry - bland, Sweet and sour chicken - sauce was watery. Shrimp appetizer was crispy but oily. We really wanted to like this place, a BYOB is nice. However the food was bland, service slow and atmosphere non-existant. I read so many reviews that I thought great sounds like the place I want to go, reviewing the critiques now - I see alot of people like this place due to the price. Excellent, just excellent Thai food! We are from out of town and we're staying at a nearby hotel and found this gem. We we're here for 3 nights and ate there all 3 nights so we could try the different dishes, we were never disappointed. Try the Snapper, a really good fish with a beautiful presentation. Decor is simple and the restaurant is clean. Service was great, very prompt, and it's BYOB, and that was so nice. They don't even charge a corkage fee. We said goodbye to the owners tonight, so sad to leave. They made us feel like family and fed us like family, and it made our trip special. read more

The food is pretty good. The service was okay, but understaffed. Family owned. The decor could be improved, and it was noisy. What really struck me as odd, and this has happened the last time I was in there too, I was asked to give them the tip in cash and not on the credit card. I know credit card processors and merchants don't normally charge more for adding tips. It does take a little more time to process each credit card again. I am not saying they are doing this. Typically, businesses that want cash tips do not report the tip revenue. There was no sign stating this policy. I was personally asked to do this. Since I wasn't expecting this I only gave them about 15%, as I don't carry much cash. read more

I've came here numerous times before, we are quite the regulars. I love the family, I love the cultural influence and I love the cuisine. My family used to hesitate trying food outside of their traditional realm being Eastern European but one dinner had everyone sold. I came back with my sibling after about a month break, the service (like family), the atmosphere exactly how it was before, and the food (beautiful). The complex flavors, the perfect blend of spices, the wonderful use of the umami profile. You could truly taste the culture, and every dish brings you crawling back. You will love this restaurant if you like the taste of vomit. My wife and I had the #8 appetizer and after one bite each both said that it tasted like barf, like straight up chunks. Needless to say we didn't finish the rest of that. We did, however wait another 30 minutes for our main course to come out. I don't think we'll be going back. On a side note I was thoroughly impressed by the group of 6 who had 5 bottles of wine, bottle of vodka and 1 beer.... Seriously why bring 1 beer? Back to the food. My wife got the massuman which she left half behind to hang with the #8 and I got the pad Thai which wasn't very flavorful. The drunken bunch had the right idea, get wasted before coming. read more

I'm surprised this place has such great reviews. Imagine if Chef Boyardee made Thai food. My noodles were all stuck together, no gravy (noodles soaked it all up), the "broccoli" was some wilted leaves (tasted gross). My wife's curry was decent, not great. Spring rolls were really doughy (guessing they are made from frozen). I'm usually pretty forgiving and don't leave negative reviews, but this was exceptionally bad. I feel bad slamming this place but we had one of out worst restaurant experiences here. My wife and I brought a couple of friends here who were from out of town, we had reservations for 6pm. When we got there we were told it would be about fifteen minutes and so we waited. As we waited we looked around and all agreed that there wasn't one table that looked nearly ready to go. Since my wife and I are ten year regulars here I went and talked to the owner, he said no problem on taking my cell number and calling us when a table was ready. We went to the bar down the street. After about an hour, and no calls, we walked back to Bangkok Rest only to see them seating another group at what should of been our table. The owner tried to play dumb about it which further pissed us off. We ended up in Batavia and had a great meal at Tusk. What a shame, after eating here 3-4 times per month for the last decade we will never go back. Now we drive past Bangkok Restaurant on our way to Tusk. I know this is not a food review but good service makes everything taste better. Honestly, I would have given them 3 stars for their food. Now with zero stars for service the average is a whopping 1! read more
