**Terrible Experience -- Avoid This Place** If I could give this place negative stars, I would. We went to this sad excuse for a restaurant last night, and unfortunately, it was one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. Our party of five adults (plus a young child) waited nearly two hours and never even received food for most of our group. Two of the adults were served, but the rest of us were completely forgotten. After more than an hour of waiting, we finally asked what was going on--only to find out they had*never entered the rest of our order at all. At first, they told us our food was "just a little behind" and on its way, but that turned out not to be true. Then they even tried to serve us another table's order--who had just arrived--so that's when we realized our order had never been placed, or had been given to another party. After we complained several times and had to flag down multiple people for help because our server had disappeared, we finally got them to put in our order. When they did finally start bringing food, they brought the dishes out one at a time, with more than 30 minutes between each. By that point, four of the six people in our group (including the child) had already left. I asked for my food to be packed to go because everyone else had already left, but they put the meat, vegetables, rice, and noodles all together in one box, turning it into a watery, soupy mess that was completely inedible. Both entrees we were served had to be thrown away. Even after explaining everything that had happened, our waitress disappeared for another 20 minutes. We had to flag down three different servers just to get our bill--for a meal we never got to enjoy. In the end, we were **extorted for over $70** for an experience that was beyond unacceptable. Whatever you do, **DO NOT VIST TOKYO STEAKHOUSE in AMARILLO TX.** You'll wait for hours, get little to no service, and walk away frustrated, hungry, completely ripped off, without an explanation or apology. This was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences we've ever had. We waited hours only to have our pockets picked by these people. In the end, we went home, and still had to make our dinner. Don't waste your time on these clowns. read more

Came here with a group of 5 and the wait wasn't that long. The mushroom soup was delicious. The ginger salad was also good. The hibachi steak although I asked for it medium - the entire table steak came out medium well. The overall server was really good. The rice was good and the noodles were okay. I wish our hibachi experience with the cook was better - everything felt rushed. read more

Sit down, buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride. So, as we waited for any form of service, we contemplated the menu. Selection seemed ok until our server arrived. Out of this meat, we don't have that at the moment. We should've known it would get worse, and we'll it did. The soda was flat, and the iced tea was probably sitting around all day, cloudy as a summer sky in amarillo. Then, when we finally settled on what was available, we weren't surprised about what arrived. Uncooked calamari, ooops, sorry about that, then our roll showed up, with bugs as an extra bonus. Yep, straight up crawling on the roll. No joke, they oh sorry we'll make another. Nope , nope, nope, I told them to cancel everything, which wouldn't be a problem because they forgot to enter the rest of it. So welcome to a pit of despair known as Tokyo joke show. Just don't bother, so many other places. Just read the reviews, we try to look past reviews to give a place a shot, mistakes were made, an hour lost, life goes on. So far the server has a terrible, impatient attitude. The design isn't appealing. It's one big room with unappealing lighting. When I walked in there was a mild odor that I realized was burnt soy sauce, from the grills in the middle of the grouped tables. Everything's grimy. Chairs, tables, air, restroom. The server's tacit exasperation and dislike of guests is a huge turnoff. Wish I hadn't come here. Everything is very expensive on the menu, which is fine since they cook everything right in front of you. The water tastes like tap. I'm sensing the owners are money oriented and they skimp on service and ever cleaning anything. read more

Food was a miss from bland hibachi soup - tasted like dirty dish soap - one lonesome slice of thin mushroom and two slivers of green onion made me really wish I didn't receive this bowl of gray water...the salad arrived drenched in ginger dressing - it was very unappealing with chucks of carrot and ginger laying on top of lettuce - not an appealing salad. Entree arrived at same time as salad - so we forgot to eat the wilted ice burg drowning in ginger dressing....steak was flavorless and tough - the grissely pieces of steak clung together and showed why it's so tough. Rice and noodles were plentiful but not seasoned at all - noodles were mushy and overcooked. This food is wonderful for leftovers right after drinking a big 40 and chasing down some Boone Hill.....not for us on a Friday night when we went looking for teriyaki and hibachi flavored meals. Came here for my 16th birthday last night and loved it! Food wasn't the best, and wasn't the worst. It was good! Our server was so nice, and she was very clear about our orders and double checked what everyone wanted. Our cook was so fun! I honestly didn't expect cheesecake to be presented to me, and it was beautifully presented! Overall, if the previous reviews speak of bad service, I would beg to differ, and say that as of May 5th, 2025, the Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse will in the future see Caleb Freeland again! read more

Tried this place b/c proximity to United Grocery Store. Floor leading to To-Go Desk was slick/slippery. Shrimp/Chicken Habachi bland, sautéed veggies almost nonexistent and miso soup watery. Asked for plastic ware and was given none individually wrapped fork/spoon in age of COVID. Refused that. I was given mustard and ginger sauces only. Food was so bland neither condiment helped. We weren't even here 15 minutes and regretted not going somewhere else. We ordered our hibachi and have family members who are allergic to onions. We were told all the veggies were mixed together and we would not be able to order our veggies without onions. We were basically told we had to have all the veggies or none at all. So some members in our family didn't even order food. This is the only hibachi style restaurant I have ever been to that does not accommodate. We will never come back again. If you have family members who are allergic to onions, carrots, zucchini or broccoli, don't come unless you want to eat your rice without veggies. The portions are also very small. Very different from other hibachi places in Amarillo. My wife's veggies were probably about 1/2 measuring cups worth and that being generous. Also, they had multiple items that my family wanted to order that they kept saying they were out of such as filet mignon, some rolls and some beers. That is crazy that they close from 2 to 5 and can't restock. Very unacceptable. read more

The food is great, however, whoever is running this business just doesn't know how to update things. These are their current hours. Nothing is updated anywhere online (that is easily found, I searched for about 15 minutes). To whoever the owner/manager of Tokyo is, I highly recommend updating your google page, making a Facebook and connecting it to your google page, or making an Instagram page. It's difficult to keep up with all of these things but it will help people not become frustrated when it says online that you're open and then no one answers the phone! read more

He told me to change her on the floor or my car (we Ubered there). Awful, disrespectful and illegal! Restaurants are required to provide changing tables over 50 in capacity! Parents: do not go here! Drove all the way to Amarillo to eat at a Japanese steak house with a hibachi grill. Once we got there we stood for 5 minutes without anyone acknowledging us. Finally my husband and I went to the register and asked to be seated. We were told to "hold on a minute" 10-15 minutes went by and still nobody sat us or even made eye contact! I have been wanting this for months. I have called and stopped by this establishment several times and no answer or they are closed. I called and to my surprise they answered. I order the lunch steak medium and lunch chicken. I pick up my order go straight home. My order is wrong I have 2 chicken orders 1 with no vegetables. I call Tokyo a server answers, I tell her what has happened. She blames the cooks and then tells the lady who took my order it was wrong I can here her in the back ground. "she said no it's not I checked it." I have a picture here do I need to send to someone. No, we can make you vegetables and steak and you can come pick it up. Obviously that's the last thing I want to do. So I called back and just see if I can get it another time as a meal. WTH folks.. went here on Saturday night for dinner, when we walked in there was one person in front of us and then two other folks came in behind us. Wasn't that busy but we were not acknowledged once and no one even said "we'll be right there". We decided to try this restaurant for the first time. After being forgot about by the host, we finally was seated at a regular table. Not one of the wait staff acknowledged we were there. After 15 minutes of waiting we walked out. There was no organization with the staff. The host was acting as wait staff while others where standing around doing nothing. Haven't visited this restaurant in probably 3-5 years. Came in 06/24/2023 for my daughters birthday, party of 6. We all ordered and 5/6 had ordered extra rice in lieu of the vegetables. There was another party seated with us of 4 and they also ordered extra rice in lieu of vegetables. So when the chef brought out the food, instead of giving the ones extra rice, he took the leftover rice and vegetables, and put on a plate and took it back with him instead of giving to the patrons. I was appalled. So our bill alone was over $125 and the chef took a "to go box with him". Never again. read more

If you enjoy Hibachi restaurants, this is the place to be!!!! Quality Japanese food, great service, and all for a great price! Their portions are huge! The lunch menu is served with soup, salad, fried rice and vegetables, the dinner menu comes with all the same plus noodles. I always have plenty to eat and usually come home with half a to-go box full for later. The fried rice has the BEST flavor!!! They really put a lot of love into their rice - some places serve fried rice that is hardly more than steamed rice with vegetables, but NOT at Tokyo. The meat is always super tender and always cooked perfectly, steaks are always cooked to the temp ordered, I order medium rare which is hard to get around here, almost everyone over cooks beef. My absolute favorite thing is the Gyoza appetizer! They serve the best Gyoza in town - the wrappers are always crisp and perfectly cooked, there is a good amount of filling, and the dipping sauce is unique and very tasty. If you haven't tried this little gem, run, don't walk! read more

I am so glad I didn't listen to the star rating! This place was amazing. We had their dumpling! To die for! I ordered a sushi roll but the seaweed was a little more chewy. But still tasty! This used to be our go to restaurant for Japanese Hibachi style food. After today, I am not sure we will be back. Our chef was not very personable, and acted like he was doing us a favor for giving us sauces. We were in for lunch, and I accept that they try to cook faster and that the portions will be smaller. Unfortunately there was almost no showman ship, and my hibachi steak portion was smaller than their old kids meals used to be. On top of the smaller than normal portions, I have several pieces of steak that were too tough to eat, and my husband and children had some tough pieces of chicken. I really hope this restaurant improves again, but for now we will choose one of the other Japanese Steakhouses the next time we are in the mood. read more

My wife and I and our three young children traveled from out of town, we called in advance to check wait times and we were told the wait would be 30 minutes. They said they'd put our name and number down and told us to wait in our car and that they would call us when our spot opened up. After 30 minutes my husband went in to check and they told us it'd be 5 more minutes. We waited an additional 15 minutes, watched probably two dozen people walk in during that 15 minutes only to find out they'd been seating anyone who walked in instead of going by the wait list. IS THERE A -1 STAR??? We hVe been traveling throughout the South /SouthEast, where the normal method of abusing fish is to batter and fry!! Then we happened on Amarillo STARVING for even some mediocre sushi (but did expect good service---we've had extraordinary great service throughout our trip!) We saw good reviews for this place - and took off! First the service( or lack of service, lack of personality, lack of courtesy, etc. etc.). Surly is the only description that fits. And thats all I will say about that! The "server" did run by the table one time, after dropping off the offending plates, and asked IN PASSING, how the meal was. We would have had to SCREAM our response for her to have heard. For , like I said, she RAN BY the table... Then to the Sushi-- Tuna and Yellowtail were so old they smelled (HINT: this is NOT a good thing!) The rice was cold, hard, too sticky, and inedible. The California Roll consisted of "crab stick" - we are used to K-Krab, this did not concern or dissuade us! But HINT: crab does NOT contain sticks). Honesty would have been Pseudo-Crab, Phony-Crab... All held together with too much mayonnaise! NASTY !!! The Salmon/Avocado Roll was distinguished from the Antiquated Tuna and Yellowtail by the presence of something green and mushy. (Presumably Avocado) Needless to say we did NOT finish the meal, but did give it a decent burial under a napkin!!! Eating it would NOT have been an appropriate ending to this meal!!
