Mock Duck Banh Mi
Rathin K.

I went here with my partner and her parents while we were visiting them in La Crosse. They were very excited to take us here as my partner LOVES banh mi. The location is in downtown LaCrosse in an indoor plaza. It's a bit hard to find but not that bad. It's a fairly small space with not a ton of seating, but it's meant to be a casual restaurant so it's understandable. You go up to the counter to order. Service was fairly quick. The menu doesn't have a ton of vegetarian options -- I do wish there were some vegetarian phos available. My partner and I both ordered the mock duck banh mi. It also came with a small bag of chips -- that was a nice plus. The banh mi itself was okay. The bread was good, and the vegetables were as well. My main complaints are that the proteins were too saucy/sweet (which overpowered everything else) and that the actual construction of the sandwich was off (resulting in some bites that were just veggies/just protein). I don't think this restaurant is as good as some in larger cities, but we may be back as it's the best choice in LaCrosse at the moment.

I got the Char Siu Pork Belly and Pho broth and two summer rolls

Food was fresh and tasty! Service was fast and friendly. The place is inside a building, but the signage outside wasn't hard to find. It is small inside, only a few tales but it wasn't busy when I went inside. Definitely would go back again.

First time coming here. Finding the place was a bit hard and confusing but not THAT difficult. We tried the 3 different Banh Mi sandwiches: Lemon Grass Porkbelly, KBBQ Steak, and Char Siu Porkbelly. KBBQ was by far my favorite. Every sandwich comes with a small bag of chips and sandwiches are a decent size. They have a self-serve area that you can grab water on the side. Also ordered a boba smoothie and I loved it. The service was great. They were welcoming and super nice. Let us take our time ordering and even showed us the menu. They were pretty quick with coming out with the food as well. They didn't really tell us what was what when it came out so we had to figure it out ourselves, not too much of an issue though. Place was very cute and clean. They only have one small bathroom but considering it's a small cafe, it's not an issue. Would definitely come back here for more. Definitely one of the better places to get fresh Banh Mi in La Crosse.

Far better than some of the reviews suggest…read more Any review that talks about "the Moose" is discussing an older establishment with different owners in the same location. Not sure how that happened on Yelp, but there it is. Now, on to the review The Bierhaus is a little too kitschy as far as décor goes. However, the food is good, the beer is cold, and the staff is nice Went with a friend and I had the Lacrosse brat and fries, he had the German Brat and German Potato salad. The brats were both well cooked (and juicy). They were definitely as different from each other as the menu listed them - both good. Fries were fine, not super special, but hot and fresh. And a large amount. The german potato salad was good. They may or may not make it onsite, but in any case it was a good example of the warm, tangy concoction that it is. The only miss was the brat buns - they seemed a little stale, or perhaps had been kept unwrapped in a warming tray a little long and they had dried out. Definitely a miss. Bier selection is not Essen Haus quantity, but fine. About 8 german biers on tap, and about the same of american beers if you have to have that lite beer (But why?) And the prices were very good, especially considering this post covid inflationary age. Well worth going to again.

I requested the manager and she swore at me. I give the second star because the waiter was new and was trying but obviously not trained and the manager was terrible. Train your employees.

We weren't sure what to do next and overheard other guests confused about this too -- it felt like we had to follow her without clear instructions. The food was great, and the prices made it easy to try different options. Our server was attentive and kept the coffee coming. We liked it so much we came back the next day just for the food. One small issue -- they only gave us two utensils for three people (both times!), so we had to ask for another. We also had to ask for a coffee spoon both times. Cleanliness was a bit questionable; I noticed a used straw wrapper near the condiment station. When it was time to pay, we waited about 10 minutes at our table before realizing payment is made at the counter. At the counter, it felt awkward being loudly asked how much we wanted to tip. We intended to leave $10 on a $40 bill but ended up tipping $8 instead. Overall, the food and service were solid, but the front-of-house experience and cleanliness could be improved.

My family has been coming here for years! Le Château in La Crosse is owned by a lovely married couple from France. She had to go get another host to come point our name out. After finally being seated. Our waitress took our order right away. We were the only diners and came along 2 other tables. Le Cave was quite busy so it took a while for us to get our two drinks. We finally got our food after a little over an hour. My husband got the lamb wellington but they didn't have lamb and offered beef instead. The sauce was overly salted. So i couldn't try more than the tiny bite i took. I got The lobster risotto. It had mixed reviews but i thought i would try it and have my own judgement. It was also the waitresses favorite. I will say, the herbs in the risotto was over powering and the lobster which was supposed to be poached tasted grilled and was over cooked. Like many other reviews, i couldn't cut it with my butter knife. Perhaps a steak knife would've helped. But it still doesn't help the fact that it was over cooked. The side of butter was unnecessary as everything was too flavorful. And the edamames were just a tad bit too much. Escargot was over cooked. The herb butter was flavorless. We were very disappointed as this was what we were looking forward to the most. Fois gre was ok. $200 dinner and we were not impressed. But it was worth a try.
