This might be my new favorite Vietnamese cafe in the whole Chinatown starting today! I was craving for some Vietnamese food after riding my bike for a while on a chill summer day. Out of my corner coming down Mulberry street, across from Columbus Park, I spotted Banh Mi Cafe. Yelped for its rating and it looked really chilled inside. It is a cafe with EXCELLENT, I mean EXCELLENT Vietnamese food! I ordered a lemongrass pork vermicelli, and it was so good! I am judging it from a prospective of both of my parents who worked for Vietnamese restaurants (Chinatown standard) for decades. The mix was tangy, sweet, and if you add sriracha to the mix, oh man, you get the heat, the salt, along with it. They also give you a side of fish sauce to pour in it. I am excited to come back here next time to try the other dishes. The vibe is really chilled inside like a cafe (probably not one you can put your laptop in and work, but it's a nice space!), many people, including teens from across the street come here for a quick cafe break. Lots of couples walked in for coffee and couples who eat in. I don't get a vibe that tips are mandatory. The kitchen is an open kitchen and the service is really quick. My two usual banh mi spots were closed already and we were really hankering for a banh mi, so I did a quick Google search to see what was still open in the area. We really wanted a standard #1 banh mi, and neither of the Vietnamese restaurants in the area had them, so I decided to stop at Banh Mi Cafe. I had their #1 Traditional Banh Mi. I would say the sandwich was about 30% meat and 70% pickled veggies. The addition of peanut sauce in the sandwich was really kind of weird and I'm not sure I'm into it. I don't think I'll be back again for banh mi, even if my usual spots are closed. read more

Should have been a red flag when I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and there wasn't a single other Asian person eating here. I had never been here before, so obviously I started with the special pho, the staple number one item at any pho spot. The thing that made me stop in, even though I had never heard of this place, was that it's an order first, sit down type of spot with no tipping. After I got my pho, I realized all the bean sprouts, mint, and jalapeños were already mixed into the bowl. Usually I don't add the bean sprouts or mint because I'm allergic, so I had to pick them all out. On top of that, half the mint was bruised, and instead of the usual thinly sliced white onions, they used big chunks of red onion. The amount of meat was abysmal. There were maybe four halves of beef balls, about three slices of the thin beef that should have been served raw on top, and only three or four tiny pieces of brisket. The bowl itself was also smaller than usual, but the bigger issue was that it was about seventy percent noodles with barely any broth. The broth wasn't very deep or rich either. All I really tasted was salt, and once I added a little lime, it just tasted salty and sour. I'm not one for wasting food, but I couldn't even finish half the bowl. The only redeeming quality about this place was probably the service. The owner was very hands on, helping guide customers and bringing food to the tables even though it's more of a cafe or food court style setup where you're expected to pick up your food when your number is called. If not for the service, I'd probably give this bowl of pho one star. Maybe the rest of the menu is better, but it would be hard for me to choose to come back. read more

This place is right across from a park, doesn't offer that stinky scent from the streets, it's clean, there is a server that is not pressed for tips, and the cashier was pretty patient, spoke well, and knowledgeable. The price was great, portion matched it very well, it's more than a hole in the wall. Definitely recommend going!! It's a cute little shop tucked in the less crowded spot on Mulberry St. I was excited to have found a banh mi place in Chinatown but I'm also aware that Vietnamese food is not as good in Texas so our expecting was really on a very low level. We ordered their banh mi, peanut noodles and spring rolls to share. Spring rolls were wrapped funny, peanut noodles just tasted straight up peanut butter and noodles mixed together. While banh mi was decent it wasn't what we are used to in DFW. I'm glad that viet places here are up and coming but nothing beats DFW Vietnamese food shop especially what we have in Houston. read more

Stumbled across this place while in New York. It had a grand opening sign. There were quite a few people inside. The owner Peter took our order right away. Peter Provided great customer service. I got the caramel coffee it was delicious. My husband and the sparkling Ribenna drink and that was delicious too. I had the spicy minced pork with noodles it was delicious also. My husband had a sandwich and he enjoyed it. My sons got the beef pho and it was really delicious. The pho broth was the best seasoned we have ever had. When we were leaving Peter talked with us again and took the time to point out areas in the neighborhood we might want to see. We stumbled upon this place & discovered that they had only been opened for about 2 months so we decided on giving them a try! Started with the lemongrass pork banh mi which tasted fresh and satisfying. It's not your typical banh mi as it included a unique sauce (couldn't quite put my finger on it), cucumber slices (instead of spears) so not as evenly distributed but still overall quite flavorful. Then we got 2 different kinds of pho bowls - the special (beef meatballs, brisket, tripe) & the brisket. Once again, a slightly different experience than I have had previously in that these had thick cut onions which threw me off and the flank was more so well done in the broth so the extra "cooking" in the broth made it fragile and tear apart. The mint leaves I have to say are the oldest I have ever seen on top. We said for dine in. First one they have for here second one they gave to go bag. Came to try Banh Mi Cafe with some friends while in Chinatown. We realized it's more of a take out spot for their banh mi sandwiches but we decided to stay and eat in. The food we ordered was pretty good. The lemongrass pork vermicelli bowl was very tasty and the phos were delicious with very flavorful broth. The fried spring rolls were decent, your typical spring rolls but with Chinese spring roll wrapping, not the traditional Vietnamese wrapping. The shrimp summer rolls are a bit pricey, $3 a piece for their size. We felt that the summer rolls weren't wrapped tight enough so when we bit into them, all the goodness inside fell out. The peanut sauce was also a bit too thick for our liking. The iced coffee was great but the Thai iced tea was just ok. I wasn't aware that Banh Mi Cafe put boba in their Thai tea and I'm not a fan of boba so it kinda ruined the tea for me. The service we received was wonderful. We were looking for a Vietnamese place near Chinatown. We decided to go here since it seemed to have a good rating. We ordered Vietnamese iced coffee, pho noodles, and spicy pork noodles. Although we ordered egg noodles for pho, they still gave us standard noodles. The manager was there, and he repeated my order, but they just ignored it. The spicy pork dish was disappointing; it was filled with inedible spices. We did not complaint, but it was kind of disappointing, also one of server has spoiled water on our table, but he nevered cared to help us clean up. I thought that was rude. Decided to try this new space out. It's conveniently located across from Columbus Park. It wasn't crowded when I came in, but there is spacious seating. Easy to order. Staff are welcoming & don't bother you after taking your order. Tried the special bowl & the garlic parm fries. Bowl is smaller then usual pho bowls, but I liked that the soap was flavorful. Brisket is cooked well. Not chewy or red. Fries were not overpowering with parm flavor. I saw a lot of people ordering the drinks, but I didn't try. We found the ordering process to be straightforward, pay up front, and the food is served to you as you are seated at one of the tables. I spoke to the owner, and they have been open for about three weeks. The pricing is very reasonable, so if you are looking for a spot to eat, this place offers good food for those looking for value. It made sense because the current menus i saw had the restaurant logo sticker on covering the 20%. Sandwiches are 11.50 but I opted for the signature sandwich combo which was an additional $4 more for an option of spring roll 2 pc or house chips and thai tea/soda/or milk tea. Also have a wide selection of cafe drinks like Vietnamese egg coffee and Thai tea. Clean, bright, pleasant interior. The food is solid although I don't like think they do anything better than restaurants nearby that specialize in these items (Banh Min Co Ut, Pasteur or TenTen for pho, dozens of options for Cantonese). They also just opened so may have some operational growing pains. We ordered to eat in, but were given a to-go bag. Decided to try a banh mi sandwich shop closer to my job. Instead of traveling all the way to Grand St. Well tried the Char Sui banh mi. The banh mi would definitely get 4 stars. Plenty of char sui thru out sandwich. Bread was soft not crunchy or baked. Could overlook that small discrepancy. But also had an iced coffee black. Service was friendly even tho I had banh mi to go. I took all the five star reviews with a grain of salt- everyone kept saying how authentic it is. It really is not. This is more of an Asian fusion restaurant than a true Vietnamese place given the whole spice palette of the dishes that they offer. They have Thai dishes in addition to Chinese and Vietnamese. I just think that it's not genuine. I tried their namesake which is the traditional bahn mi and I knew I would regret it because just looking at the description it's not traditional. There is no pate in the sandwich which is a requirement for an authentic viet sandwich. The cucumbers are sliced weirdly. The size of a sandwich itself is laughable compared to other places in Chinatown for similar or cheaper price. The restaurant is named for their sandwiches and it wasn't good so that does not give me confidence in their other offerings. I made my sandwich a combo with spring rolls which again are not Vietnamese spring rolls, but more of a generic Chinese spring roll with cabbage in it and made with a wheat wrapper not a rice wrapper. I had an option to get Thai iced tea and I felt like I'm drinking orange colored water. There is no tea taste in this. I think this place has done well in Union Square because it's not near an Asian neighborhood but where it is in Chinatown, I think the only customers it's really gonna get are all the office workers that want to be able to get a variety of different things and go to one restaurant as opposed to going to many different ones, and getting a tastier and quite honestly cheaper experience.
