Appetizer : summer rolls - pretty light yet a hefty snack. Entree: went adventurous and ordered Sate beef noodle. Less so is the grilled pork + spring roll bun (vermicelli). Surprised on how pleasant the sate beef, not overly rich as expected. Spring roll is very crispy.

Called me crazy but I wanted a Bun Bo Hu on a 100 degree day. The soup is spicy, an umami flavor that delivers a kick. Pork sausage was ok but the pork shank was tender and flavorful. Beef shank is also tender as well, goes well with the noodles. I can't wait till winter to have this again.

This place has been here for as long as I can remember. I used to come here all time about 20 years ago and I remember prices being less than $10 for the pho. The prices now have gone up to $15-$17 for pho!! I understand prices rise over time but I can still find cheaper pho elsewhere. On my latest visit, I have noticed a lot of tourists dining in. Maybe it's bcus of the surge in tourists, they upper the prices. Service is always quick and friendly, no complaints there. And the food is delicious as well. Really comforting and tasty pho, I ordered the medium sized bowl and it was already a lot of food for me! I might end up getting the small next time.

Solid classic vietnamese food. Came in for a quick pho, large order$16. Traditional broth, perfect rice noodles, rare beed slices that slowly cook in the broth. Very filling and tasty. Its a reliable spot for good food, few left in Chinatown that sell you great quality food, with no frills.

Great food and service! Definitely recommend it. A good amount of seatings, spacious.

My family has been coming here for as long as I could remember, dating back nearly 2.5 decades ago. Each year, on random days and on special occasions, we come here to have lunch or dinner or just to have a nice meal or place to catch up. Over the years, we have seen the prices increase astronomically. It is now twice as much as it was when we first started coming here. I understand the economy is also in a different place than it was but $16 for a pho now is insanely high when you can get one for $11 a few blocks away. Don't get me wrong, pho here is pretty decent but in addition to soaring prices, the taste of the pho has taken a dip. I remember very rich broths but now it's almost as if it's been watered down to save on costs. While I don't think the pho broth is as good as it used to be, the other dishes remain delicious! I'm a big fan of the pork chops here, although the amount given varies day to day. The beef cubes are also amazing and full of flavor. A plus is the waiters here are always efficient, polite and ready to help. They seem to know my parents and their needs/wants well. Haha after all, they've probably come to this restaurant well before I was even born. Everyone there is pretty chill and they don't seem to ever kick you out so it's a nice place to hang out with friends as well.

My visit here was definitely eye-opening. When I poured tea into my cup, I have a habit of inspecting not only my food but the silverware, cups etc. I noticed after pouring my tea that the bottom of the cup had a piece of rice at the bottom.. luckily I didn't drink from it. I told the staff and they gave me a new cup. I was feeling noodle soup so I ordered Pho. As I was eating, half way through, I found a piece of hair on the beef tendon. I told the staff and they told me, it's like that-- it's actually hair from the cow. It's definitely not from the chef because the chef is bald. Whatever explanation he gave was unacceptable to me in either case. This is an internal organ from the cow, which shouldn't have a bodily hair... unless I'm mistaken? He shrugged it off and went about his day. Up until that point, everything was good, though the noodle was a bit firmer than what I recall what Pho tasted like. This experience of finding - hair - whether it be human or animal is unacceptable. Very disappointed.

I was on grand street and was craving pho and spring rolls. The place looks exactly like Thai son on Baxter street. I ordered the big bowl and small spring roll. Service was slower than usually. Took a good 15 minutes before my big bowl of pho came. The big pho usually comes with the first 5 minutes after I order. Bring cash for a 3 to 4% discount.

Tried this after archery lessons closeby. Place is very accessible by peublic commute and you will find a table soon. Was crowded but we were served in good time! Their food was good too. Wouldnt say its the best viet in town but its a good choice for grabbing a quick bite.

one of the classic viet spots in Chinatown, located on the busy grand street. All their dishes be good but I always get the spring rolls! Also had the pork chop with rice vermicelli & beef cubes with rice. must try for viet food if you're in Chinatown!

    Lily F.

Hands down one of the best viet restaurants in NYC. Every time I find myself by Grand St, this place is a MUST. From the spring rolls, the tea, the vermicelli, the pho, the beef cubes, everything is cooked to perfection and never disappoints.

It's a solid old place. Cant go wrong here. My dad loves here but for me it's too old school Chinese viet style instead of just viet style.

    No, they dont

Did they start adding water to their fish sauce? It seems to be much blander than I remember.

I got the pho ($21.78), which is steep for pho, but I guess that's Midtown prices for you. The wait was a slog--over 20 minutes for a bowl of pho, which other Yelp reviews warned about. When it finally arrived, the soup lacked that authentic pho aroma, which was a letdown. On the plus side, the beef was fresh, and the reusable to-go bag was a nice touch. Decent, but the wait and price make it hard to love. Might try again if they speed things up.

I ordered "Plain Pho", which is described as just broth and noodles, no garnish or meat. After waiting 30 minutes, for what is literally the simplest item on the menu, the bowl is brought out and it's a bowl of broth with a couple slices of chicken. No noodles. When I inquired, the server told me it's because I ordered the Plain Pho... yea and I said it comes with noodles and broth. They told me they could get me noodles, but acted like they were doing me a favor by fetching noodles for me, which was quite offputting because the noodles were quite literally half of the dish I actually ordered. How does one wait half-an-hour at a very casual fast Vietnamese food place, for premade soup and noodles, and still have the order wrong? In the end, I did get my noodles and broth, but the fact that I had to spend this much time and also justify my request for noodles (which are part of the dish) is quite insane. I put this at 2 stars for now, because I enjoyed my first time. Hopefully the service will improve.

So when my family stumbled into Pho 39, a tiny spot with just a handful of tables tucked away from the chaos outside, it felt less like finding a restaurant and more like discovering a Rebel outpost that somehow survived undetected in the middle of Imperial territory. The menu is exactly what you'd expect from a solid Vietnamese spot: pho, combination rice plates, the usual lineup. We were ready to order and move on with our lives. Then we saw the tacos. Vietnamese tacos. On the menu. Sitting right there between the banh mi and the spring rolls like they'd always belonged. Nobody in my family said anything for a full three seconds, which for us is basically a standing ovation. We ordered the duck spring rolls to start, which were fresh, well packed, and disappeared faster than a starfighter in hyperspace. For the mains we went with the beef flank pho and the banh mi combination special. The pho had a clean, well developed broth that clearly had some time put into it, and the beef flank was tender enough to make you slow down and pay attention. The banh mi combo was solid, balanced, and hit all the right notes. We did not get the tacos this visit, which means we have a built in reason to return and nobody can argue with that logic. For a small room in the middle of one of the busiest cities on the planet, Pho 39 manages to feel genuinely calm and focused. Good food, good value, and a menu with enough surprises to keep things interesting. The Force is strong with this little spot.
