Harper's Bread is one of those neighborhood bakeries that makes me think, "I really need to come here more often." They sell a wonderful array of classic Chinatown pastries and drinks, as well as notably a line-up of diverse onigiri. In a neighborhood where there is stiff competition for egg tarts, Harper's is certainly up there. Their crust is very good, whereas some bakeries' are way too papery, flaky, and flavorless. Interestingly, their regular egg tarts and Portuguese egg tarts are the same price. Both are good and truthfully I don't think there is a tremendous difference in taste between the two, even though the latter has a slightly more burnt custard. Their coconut tart is also very good, but my husband thinks it's still not as good as Ka Wah's. I love Harper's strawberry Swiss roll most of all. Their pumpkin pancake-like pastry good and not too sweet and makes for a nice snack.

Formerly known as "Harper's Bread House inc" recently renamed to "OHAYŌ Bread House". I believe they're now part of a bakery chain that's also in Brooklyn. This bakery has been around for a very long time and aside from the name change everything has stayed the same. The staff and the layout of the bakery is still the same. Half of it is a bakery. The other half is a bubble tea spot. I haven't tried the bubble tea spot, but the bakery is really good. This is a cash only establishment. Don't get intimidated by the long lines if you see a lot of people because they do work quick. There's a lot of options for baked goods, but personally, the star for me is the freshly made onigiri/rice balls. Everything is affordable and there's so many flavors to choose from. It's perfect if you're looking for something as a snack or light breakfast. Two or three rice balls will fill you up. If you're not feeling rice balls, you can look at their baked goods. Their egg tarts and buns are pretty good. The ladies at the counter do speak English. The rice balls are all individually wrapped in seaweed, and you can peel off the plastic and wrap it yourself. The rice is always fresh and they don't use leftover rice. There's too many flavors to review so notable mentions are: - Purple rice eel - Curry chicken - Teriyaki chicken - Bacon, egg and cheese (yes this is a thing, I was surprised too and it's actually good) - Butter chicken Super affordable, worth checking out for their bakery or rice balls

I come here mainly for their onigiris and also their watermelon slush in the summertime. They have so many different varieties and it's so worth it for the cheap price!

This bakery in Chinatown is a local staple that offers a variety of baked Chinese goods from buns to pastries to other small bites. I got the egg tarts here and they were so delicious. Would love to come back and try other items!

Came here on a Tuesday afternoon after a stressful morning of exams and was super pleased!! Friendly staff and delicious egg tarts; Portuguese was my favorite but the dan tat was also an excellent specimen. They have a bunch of seating which was another pleasant surprise, and the bubble tea looked yummy. Will definitely be back!

Since Kam Boat Bakery closed down, I struggled to find a new go-to place for Portuguese egg tarts in Chinatown. Don't get me wrong: there's plenty of excellent Portuguese egg tarts to be found in Chinatown. But some bakeries charge $2.25 per tart, which is kind of expensive. Enter Harper's Bread House, an unassuming bakery that has been around for decades and that flies a bit under the radar due to its location on the East side of Chinatown across from Grand Street that is less busy and also less touristic than main Chinatown. The Portuguese egg tarts at Harper's Bread House may be the best bang for your buck in Chinatown, as both egg tarts and Portuguese egg tarts are the same price, $1.50. The Portuguese egg tarts have a firmer, flakier crust and a lightly burnt yellow custard that is tasty and pilllowy soft. They also sell a Brazilian version of the egg tart that uses coconut, although I still prefer the Portuguese version. They also sell an amazing variety of onigiri or Japanese rice balls: Buffalo wings, bacon & egg, octopus salad, dry pork, Korean spicy spam, purple rice crab salad, purple rice eel, shrimp tempura salad, crawfish salad, Teryaki fried chicken, curry chicken, seaweed, tuna, spicy salmon, spicy tuna. All priced $2.50-$3. I'm a fan.

Cute, fairly standard Chinatown bake shop. Also sells drinks at a good price. Sells mostly sweets (pastries) and not much that could be a meal. I'd come back here for a haul of their wintermelon and red bean pastries.

We initially came in to try the egg tarts. We got 1 of each and picked up a rice ball too. The coconut egg tart wasn't so great. It was dry to the mouth. You need a cup of tea or coffee to help wash it down. The Portuguese egg tarts and regular egg tart was great. Nice filling and the crust was nice and flaky. There's a large selection of the rice balls, we got the spicy salmon and it did not disappoint. Coming back to try the other flavors.

Harper's Bread House Chicken Bun - Sizable for the price, less interesting than it appears and dry

Harper's Bread House is one of the cheap eats Chinese bakery cafés in Chinatown. They also have a juice and tea section called "Fruit Vanity," plus some seating. Decided to try some items that I haven't tried out in other similar places, i.e., their sizable Chicken Bun, sizable for $2.50, and my first ever Wife Melon Cookie. The chicken cutlet and other fillings in the bun were less interesting than they appeared and relatively dry, although the sandwich could be filling for the price. As for the Wife Melon Cookie, it may be cherished by people raised on it, but for me it was just a nondescript sweet flavor without any melon or other special taste. I'm also not especially wowed by egg tarts, which I understand is one of Harper's specialties, although I had them served often for desert when traveling in China. (Also, not a fan of red bean paste deserts.) Perhaps these items are more geared towards customers with either more muted bakery palettes and expectations or plain nostalgia for these specialties, so I admittedly may not be the best judge. Although writing both of my choices off my Harper's Bread House "bucket list," would stop by again to try out other items available. Please leave me a suggestion of what else might be worthwhile to try on my next visit.

This is my go to place to get rice balls. They have such a wide variety ranging from egg, to various proteins for such a deal. There is usually a steady line but the service is quick. Currently no seating but they usually have a few tables and chairs. It is a bakery so you can buy buns, egg tarts and the like. The star of the show is definitely the rice balls. Good for a light lunch or to go snack with stellar prices.

The bistro itself is very nicely lit. I almost felt like I was in a movie. I had the Turkish eggs and a side of Bourbon glazed bacon. The chili-drizzled poached eggs sat on a bed of yogurt nestled against triangles of thin flatbread. Very hearty and filling for someone who was on their feet all day. The bacon was such a treat. I was afraid they would be soggy from the glaze or a little too sweet but it was the absolute perfect balance of both. My friend tried out the chicken and waffles and I was almost jealous that I hadn't ordered that. After being given a piece to try, I can confidently say that the Belgian waffle had the nicest crispy exterior and a beautifully fluffy inside. The chicken was such a wonderful savory pairing to the not too sweet waffle. The iced coffee was a nice side pairing. The pumpkin spice flavor was the perfect amount of sweet without being overpowering. I will be returning soon!

I also ordered a Diet Pepsi with grenadine; they don't carry Diet Coke, which I almost docked a point for, but the mix was unexpectedly delicious. Highly recommend it. My date ordered the hanger steak and said it was absolutely amazing. Only hiccup: his first glass of wine he got came out hot... like, microwave-level warm. Fortunately, the server brought a new (cold) one and the rest of the meal was smooth sailing. Service was friendly, the vibe was homey and relaxed, and the food was solid across the board. Would definitely come back, especially for that salad and another round of grenadine magic.

It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. I would return to Friedman's when I'm in the Herald Square area, or check out one of their other locations in the city.

Sarge's ended up being the perfect alternative, just a quick five-minute walk from our hotel. We arrived around 5:00 pm on a Sunday and were seated right away, which already felt like a win. The meal started with coleslaw and both a half sour and full sour pickle--such a classic deli touch, and a great way to kick things off. I ordered the half sandwich with matzah ball soup, and the portion sizes were no joke. The soup alone could have been a full meal: a huge bowl with an equally massive matzah ball. The broth was warm and soothing, and the matzah ball was incredibly light with a perfect texture. The half pastrami on rye was just as impressive. Even "half" was stacked high with flavorful, tender pastrami. Adding a bit of mustard from the table brought everything together--it was simple, classic, and exactly what I was hoping for. Not only was it one of the more reasonably priced meals of the trip, but it was also genuinely satisfying.
