I visited here on a Sunday for a quick lunch. The interior is really cute. It's a small space with a counter where you order food, the menu on a chalk board, and a couple of tables + a counter where you can sit. It's clean and cozy. I had the Lemongrass Chicken sandwich which I would definitely recommend. The bread is crunch, chewy and delicious. The salad inside is flavorful (and very peppery, which I love but some might not), and the chicken was well flavored and soft. It was on the spicy side, be warned. I took the jalapenos out. I would definitely get the Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I thought it was awesome. Not too sweet, strong coffee flavor, well crushed ice, and a good coffee to ice ratio. My friend ordered the beef Pho. It was quite peppery, but not bad for the price. Large portion, too. The meat was shredded and the noodles were very well cooked (not too soft, not too chewy). I stopped in to take a look and despite having just closed, they offered to make a sandwich for me regardless! Craved a banh mi so badly and came across this place while walking around in this part of Chicago after our fried Korean chicken wings dinner which was down the street. I could tell it wasn't going to be an authentic as soon as I walked in, it was a very cute and modern atmosphere. I guess I didn't expect too much at this point. As I walk in you can smell a powerful cinnamon/anise scent from the pho. It smelled delightful at first and then over powering after awhile. They claim their food is made with fresh ingredients but when you look behind the counter they have bags of bread sitting next to the oven (they remind me of the breads you buy frozen and wait to thaw, then put in oven). This place wasn't as enjoyable as Nhu Lan right around the corner. For the same price this sandwich is smaller and more "americanized". My bahn mi was also topped with too much pepper. If you want something more authentic I suggest Nhu Lan. I did, however, enjoy the atmosphere and the self serve water station. Each water pitcher had a few oranges to add more flavor. I've been wanting to try Bánh Mì for some time, but there was always something deterring me from doing so. It could be a horrible memory of an over-fiery Pho. It could be memories of my father (who was a Marine in Vietnam) putting ketchup in white rice to make it more what he "had in Khe Sanh." It tasted worse than you can imagine. I looked at the reviews of this place, some good, some bad but they all seemed fair. Today, which is easily the coldest day of the year, I figured I'd give it a shot. If it was too hot, it would warm me up for my return trip home. It wasn't and BOY am I glad I made the decision to go! I kept it simple and got the BBQ Pork Bánh Mì. The first thing I noticed was the bread. It's a baguette, but soft inside with a thin, crispy crust that has the right amount of rigidity, but gave so you're not fighting with the sandwich. The combination of cucumber, shaved carrot, jalapeño and a mild, pickled daikon perfectly balanced out the BBQ pork. Even the cilantro worked - and I don't like cilantro! The spiciness was well balanced, too - it just stayed on your lips somehow. No burning tongue, no watery eyes, just the right amount of heat to let you know it's there, but doesn't overwhelm. Delicious. Since this is my first Bánh Mì, I am by no means an expert and these may not be the most authentic (according to some reviewers), but as a fan of food who's also had some culinary training, I can tell you that the quality and creativity in these sandwiches are just amazing. When I go to a sandwich shop alone, often eat a little on the fast side. For some reason I don't like dining out alone. After one bite of this, nothing else mattered. It made me slow down and savor every bite. If you're new to Bánh Mì as I am, this is definitely a great place to start. I do have high standards for pho, but I expected more for the price I paid ($8-$9), which was average price but below average quality. The seating imitates that in Vietnam noodle shops, which is counters attached to the walls so everyone seats in a line, slurping their pho. The soup was delicious. Hot, flavorful and great portion size. The sandwich was awesome. The bread was crispy and chewy, and easy to eat. The chicken was tasty and the veggies were plentiful. The food was good... I did like it. I was just very disgusted by the conditions in the bathroom... In order to flush the toilet, you have to pull on some plastic bag makeshift device that is sticking out of the water tank... I really hope this Bahn Mi restaurant stays open! I've been to a similar restaurant on Broadway and my experience at this one was so different. I ordered the Bahn Mi grilled pork and spring roll (has 3 large shrimp) combo. The bread was soft and warm. The grilled pork was tasty but I love the jalapenos and cilantro that they add to this sandwich. Such a great combination of flavors. If you need a spicier sandwich you can add the red sauce that they have on the counter. It's probably "guatemalen insanity sauce". The people working there were so friendly and I say this because we walked in about 30 minutes before they closed. You know the looks you can get when a business is about to close. I ordered the curry chicken banh mi and beef brisket pho. I didn't expect a lot but this was not good. Let's start with the banh mi. The curry was more of an Indian curry than a Vietnamese curry. Served with very little meat which is disappointing. The bread was actually pretty decent. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. The pho didn't even taste like pho. It tasted like they just threw in spices and called it a day. I'm highly disappointed. This place is clearly made for people who don't know Vietnamese food. I have been coming to this location in lakeview for the past 3 years and live the food there. On Wednesday 8/23/17 I went there e for dinner and brought a friend with me who never had banh mi before. The person taking our order was impatient and a little rude. She would not respond to questions. Regarding the menu items and then charged our order on my card even though we meant to pay separately. When I asked her for an extra toasted bread roll she quoted me a price that was 50% greater then last time I visited here. Her comment was "I'm just an employee and doing what my boss is telling me". I have visited 3 of banh mi location in the city and referred many of my friends to try their phò. This experience was very disappointing. I hope this review will be reviewed and a simple coaching around customer service will be done at the next employee meeting. I am as far from a pho/noodle/banh mi expert as you can find. Something tells me that there might be better sandwiches around (or cheaper), but my sample set is one Vietnamese place, and I might hit 2-3 places like this all year. That being said, the sandwiches at Banh Mi & Co. were very, very good. $6 got me a warm meatball banh mi and the vegetation, meat and sub roll were all fantastic. The space is a bit of a downer; it's really best for takeout, or if you are alone and one of the 8-or-so stools is free for you to pound your food right away. We brought five people there last night, so it was like getting food and drinks at a bar the size of your kitchen. Others in the group tried the noodle broth and some of the dessert concoctions; everyone seemed happy. The folks behind the counter were nice and cool with our takeover operation, since we dominated two-thirds of the available space with our group. I can't speak for the authenticity, I had banh mi in NYC in the past, and I have a feeling this place is not about being authentic. But it is still a really good sandwich. Prices are affordable. Worst customer service ever, and horrible Vietnamese iced coffee. There was a couple eating in the shop and one person waiting, when I walked in. I really wanted a Vietnamese iced coffee and it costed about $3.75 with tax. The girl filled the cup halfway with ice, then set it on the counter and...forgot, I guess? She then goes on her phone and starts texting. As she's doing so, another man walks in. He stands at the register, waiting for her to finish texting, because she didn't even bother to acknowledge him. Once she's finally done, she makes eye contact with the man and asks him what he wants. She puts his order in, sees that I'm still standing there, and gets this really confused look on her face. She realizes my cup that's half filled with ice is still sitting there. She pulls a pitcher with pre-made mix out of the fridge, fills the cup, and hands it to me. I leave, take a sip, and it's absolutely horrible. Maybe I've gotten lucky when my Vietnamese friends made it at home and share with me. But this was just undrinkable (confirmed by both my fiancé and I who are coffee lovers). I threw it out in the first trash can I could find. I don't know which was worse, me wasting nearly $4 on a horrible drink, or the careless customer service that girl was providing to the customers. I remember chatting with the owner of Bun Mi Express not too long after they opened and hearing about his plans to expand in the area, or more specifically, on Broadway. And here we are! Same premise and same great product - Banh Mi & Co is a quick-serve, modern shop with limited seating and reasonable prices. In just under 5 minutes and $5, I was out the door with my shredded chicken sandwich. The bread was toasted warm with equal parts crunch and doughy chew to it... just the way I like it. While the sandwich is admittedly on the skimpy side for the price (a 2.5 mile straight shot up Broadway will get you more, for less), it's still a pretty kick ass sandwich.
