Le colonial was a fun experience. We were a big party and had a prior reservation. The ambience is very beachy and tropical. Felt like summer was back when we walked in. Overall, the menu isn't super vegetarian friendly but we were able to adjust. We ordered the crispy vegetable rolls multiple times cz they were our fav. We also ordered chicken dumplings, spicy beef salad, spicy chicken stir fry, noodle stir fry, and finished strong with warm chocolate cake. It was fun to watch the flambé melt the cake at the table. Overall the food is decent for vegetarian but really good for meat eaters. For cocktails we got a bunch of different cocktails, they were decent but very strong. The food itself was delicious. We went with a group and shared a mix of appetizers, entrees, and dessert, which I highly recommend because it lets you try a little bit of everything. Every dish we had was flavorful and well-executed. The only downside was the service. We went on a Saturday night, so it was pretty busy, but things moved slower than expected. We were there for about three hours, and the food took quite a while to come out. That said, the ambiance, drinks, and quality of the food still made it a really enjoyable night. As someone who grew up eating Vietnamese food, I'd say the flavors were actually pretty decent and spot on for a place that doesn't seem "authentic". We ordered pho, mushroom sticky rice, egg rolls, and vermicelli pork. The broth in the pho was pretty good, they only gave me like 3 pieces of beef though. Yes it's pricey and fancy but you get what you pay for. The dishes are on the smaller side, but for a group of 6 we got over 10 plates and were all nicely full. I would come to this place alone for the vibes and decor, I adore how it looks like inside. There's a sun room in the front with lots of natural lighting come in and a bar/dining room more indoor that's dim lit. You got best of both worlds. This ended up being one of my favorite spots while visiting Chicago. The ambience is honestly stunning. It feels very French, like you're sitting outside on those beautiful Parisian café chairs. The view overlooking the shopping area just adds to it. Every part of the restaurant is so picturesque, you can tell a lot of intention went into the design. I really appreciated the atmosphere they created. I've rarely seen a high-end Vietnamese restaurant executed this well, so I was pleasantly surprised. The service was also lovely and attentive without being overbearing. For food, the shrimp on sugarcane and the monkfish small plates were my absolute favorites, do not skip those. So flavorful and memorable. The beef noodle soup had an amazing broth, super rich and tasty, but nothing wildly unique beyond that. Still solid. The chicken curry was sooo good. I loved the mango and cashews! such a unique combination and really delicious. Overall, I'd absolutely come back. Even just for the ambience alone, it's worth it. Blow away by the service , food and ambience. It's been a while since I have been back.... Easy parking and walked in to be courteously escorted to our table. I got lychee Paloma, hubby got a beer and the kid got iced tea . We ordered the shrimp pork roll, chicken ravioli ( amazing flavors) Shrimp green curry, salmon , chicken stir fry and chicken fried rice . The food was tasty but my least favorite was the salmon in a not so great sauce . Dessert was pineapple upside down cake . The hostess bought out a candle to celebrate our anniversary which was very sweet. It's expensive but worth the price. For high-end Vietnamese, this is the place to be. The lotus root salad stole the show, and the shaking beef was wonderfully tender. I came here for an anniversary dinner having heard many good things. Unfortunately very disappointing experience. I'll start with the food: For starters we ordered the monkfish and the chicken dumplings. Dumplings were good but nothing special (6/10) -- tasted like any dumplings you can buy as take out and they cost $15.... The monkfish was greasy and just okay (3/10). For entrees we ordered the shaking beef and green shrimp curry. The shaking beef was delicious and tender (9/10)-- unfortunately the only dish I had multiple bites of the whole night. The green shrimp curry was unfortunately served lukewarm and tasted just like a $10 takeout dish (4/10)-- no depth of flavor and nearly $40 and did not come with rice (purchased separately). As a side we ordered eggplant (3/10). Again, no depth of flavor whatsoever. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse option. It was okay. Overall I was very disappointed with the food. Literally ordering from a takeout restaurant would have been more delicious and 1/10 of the cost. This place was absurdly overpriced and overhyped. As an aside, I was a bit confused by the theme of the restaurant as well. Their fully white staff wearing traditional Vietnamese clothing and the wall decorations (pictured) for a restaurant whose clientele is 99% white was slightly questionable to me. Six of us had dinner on a weeknight. All the descriptions and all the hype are true- amazing meal. Let's start with the cool atmosphere. Music was perfect volume - it lifted you up and wasn't too loud that you could not hear. Lighting was low and flattering. Service Michelin Star worthy most of the meal. It faltered a little at the end. Took awhile to order dessert and to get the bill. Dinner was a home run! Wow! I thought sitting in the bar area would lose something but it turned out to be better. There are 3 seating areas. The window is the best but hard to get. The dining room was more quiet. The bar had the perfect temple music and a small intrusive TV so the guys were catching the score inbetween conversations We started by sharing appetizers . I voiced my concern about the number in orders (ex only 4 rolls for 6 people). He said he would have 6 of each. So we got 3 appetizers to split among 6 people: the rolls, dumplings, and ribs. All were good but the ribs stood out for flavor. I loved, loved, loved the rolls. The sauce should be used because it adds to the flavor. Two of us split the crispy fish. It was delicious!! Loved it. Perfect amount. The big surprise for me was the 2 sides of vegetables . The green beans had so much flavor and the bok Choy was really good too. Yummy. And they were good about upping all the appetizers that we split to 6 pieces. This was my second visit to Le Colonial, and once again, I absolutely loved the red snapper. You can have it served whole, or the server will filet it for you, which is a great way to avoid most of the bones. My favorite side dish is the Brussels sprouts--the sweet and tangy glaze on them pairs beautifully with the fish. Last time, I had the jasmine rice, but this time I tried the fried rice. While both were good, I definitely prefer the jasmine rice and will stick with that going forward. I didn't order the shrimp curry or the seafood ceviche this time, but I've had both before and they were excellent--I'll be sure to get at least one of them next time. I always enjoy dining here: it's such a beautiful space! On my most recent visit, I kicked off the night with a martini. My table enjoyed the Chao Tom, Sui Cao Chien, and Banh Cuon appetizers. For my entree, I chose the Cari Ga, which was incredible: everyone wanted some of that amazing curry sauce! We all shared the Com Chien Dac Biet at dinner which was a great touch We enjoyed several bottles of wine with dinner and ended things with the Vanilla Crème Brûlée and a trio of Gourmet Ice Cream. All flavors tasted wonderful, but know that the nuoc mam will be a little watered down (I think it's intentional to make it more palatable for folks who aren't used to Vietnamese food).
