I liked it. I do like the more flakey crunch you get from a typical banh mi baguette better though. They seem to use something similar, it's not bad just like that better, good quality ingredients (I ordered the special classic). The lychee lemonade was good nothing spectacular. Service was fast and friendly. There's a handful of tables and waiting chairs and the place looks clean. Very nice people at Banh Mi City in Pilsen. I was at Costco and decided to swing by for a late lunch this week. I had a Vietnamese iced coffee, which I later realized was over $7. Ouch. It was fine. The lemongrass tofu sandwich was good. I think the bread here isn't fresh per se as I saw them pulling it out of a big plastic bag. We do have some nice bakeries in the city and that might be a nice upgrade. I took the sandwich home and did add the packets of sriracha. Overall, still wasn't very spicy. Got takeout twice for lunch! Love the options, ingredients are fresh and service is super fast. They delivered quickly. We called to ask for the jalapeños taken out of some of the banh mi but they were already made! They still kindly took the jalapeños out for us. I got the rice noodle salad. It was a much larger portion than I was expecting and came with both a vinegrette dressing and a peanut sauce. Their spring rolls are also really worth it. And we also split a large wonton soup. The only issue I had was the Vietnamese coffee. It tasted bitter/burnt and didn't have much coffee flavor or aroma; probably won't order that again. read more

I had a craving for a banh mi while prepping for a long road trip to the East Coast and ended up finding a spot in Pilsen -- not a neighborhood I'd typically expect for banh mi, but I was pleasantly surprised. They added more meat than I'm accustomed to on this sandwich - which was a big plus. My wife and I both ordered The chicken Pho & we shared an order of shrimp spring rolls. The Shrimp Spring rolls very very fresh! Delicious!! Although they didn't have any cucumber in them. Maybe theirs doesn't come with cucumber. They come with a peanut dipping sauce, which I liked but my wife didn't like. A solid 8.5/10 The Chicken Pho comes in a huge serving! Once again VERY FRESH! this was our first time having Pho so we didn't know what to expect. I was expecting the broth to have more depth to it. But it was still very flavorful. Service was great (5/5) but I do not believe that this place is authentic (so they get 2 stars). There were several factors that lead me to this conclusion. 1). My Phô was served in a ramen bowl. 2). My Phô came out dressed already. I've been to a few Phô restaurants and NEVER did the Basil, Lime, Onion, and Jalapeños come in the dish already. 3). It lacked flavor. I'm someone that usually drinks all of my broth, but this broth was very mid, so I didn't take it with me. Got a DoorDash order of original pho and pork spring rolls. It feels like I received food that was about to go bad. The food was underwhelming. Nothing was fresh. The beef was decent, but the broth was not super flavorful, The noodles were super pasty and wouldn't pull apart, the sprouts tasted vinegary/sour. the spring rolls were busted open, the pork and veggies in the roll tasted old, and peanut sauce was watery with a spoiled taste. The lime didn't even have any juice. Even the fortune cookie was stale. Positive note, I called Bahn Mi City to report the issue with the spring rolls and the customer service was excellent. The person who answered the phone was extremely professional and kind when telling me they couldn't do anything to help me and that my only option would be to come in and pick up the a replacement of spring rolls, hence the 2 star rating. To keep it transparent when I called Banh Mi city I was initially only concerned about the spring rolls beings that was the only item I had opened at the time. Came across Banh Mi City while walking down 18th. The ambiance isn't anything special, but the establishment was clean and that's all I really care about besides the food being delicious. The food... Very delicious! The spring roll was fresh, filling, and really stood out due to the quality of the bbq pork. I ordered the grilled beef Bahn Mi with egg + avocado and it was the best Bahn mi that I've ever had (admittedly limited exposure). The baguette was super fresh, soft on the inside, and crispy on the outside. The meat was seasoned well, was tender, and was generously proportioned. The fresh produce on the sandwich really brings it all together. Next time I'd probably order extra jalapeño, but that's just me. I was surprised by the size of the sandwich as it was the biggest Bahn mi that I've ever had; however, it's well deserved considering it was $12.50 w/egg+avocado. I am glad that the place is here to diversify the neighborhood. I feel like it's tough to make changes to a classic banh mi sandwich. I am used to the 3 different types of pork, but this one had just the 2 cha siu and ham. I think it had good flavor but there needed a little more substance for me. I decided to check this place out and went with an open mind. I frequently go to Argyle St for my Vietnamese so I have a pretty good grasp of what makes a good Pho. Unfortunately, I was not impressed at all. First, the beef broth flavor was VERY faint so it tasted more like a "Mexican caldo" than Vietnamese Pho..definetley missing the herbs that makes PHO....PHO Second, they put all the garnishments themselves into the soup including hot peppers without bothering to ask if you want it all in..I dont even recall receiving any basil leaves which is typical in Pho. Lastly, they certainly dont have the round beef brisket that gets cooked in the broth but rather it's shredded beef... I simply was not sold on the authenticity aspect..and I think Ill stick to tacos in Pilsen and Pho at Argyle.. the banh mi sandwich was okay but nothing to get too excited about... I'd 100% pass on the wonton soup since the wontons weren't that great (though their handmade chicken stock for the soup itself was DELICIOUS). I 500000% get a Banh Mi from here again! As someone who had a lot of Vietnamese food growing up in the Bay Area, I will say this place definitely compares and is so good. Their bread was so warm and fluffy and they gave a great amount of all the toppings. The sandwich was perfectly balanced from the mayo to pickled carrots and daikon to the amount of beef. The pho with beef has shredded beef inside instead of those paper thin beef slice you typically get from authentic Vietnamese restaurant, but the taste is pretty good. The chicken pho as well as the spicy tofu pho are both tasty the banh mi itself is great too normally if i rate by the authenticity of the food i might give it only a 2-star review.
