It's the kind of thing that's probably best eaten on the spot, particularly given the possibility of something melting in the summer. I preserved the majority of my dessert spread but there were some items that didn't travel well. The desserts were expensive, but impressive. I also appreciated the variety of savory items being more than most dessert shops, and oddly these may have been received better than the sweets. There honestly aren't enough good things I can say about this place, my only complaint is that I don't live closer! The cakes are amazing, and I often bring them to clients who absolutely go crazy over them. Everything I've tried has been delicious. But for me, it's all about the matcha. They've introduced a few new flavors recently, but I always go back to my favorite, the strawberry shortcake matcha latte with oat milk. Easily the best matcha in NOVA. I make it a point to stop by anytime I'm within a 10 minute drive. The atmosphere is such a good mix of coffee shop and coworking space, and there are always people working, meeting up, or just hanging out. Whether I'm placing a large order or just grabbing one drink for myself, the service is consistently great. The staff is always friendly, and everything comes out quickly. They also have a really solid rewards program. I regularly end up getting a few dollars off my latte, which is always a nice surprise. Some of the most beautiful pastries , I've ever seen. Truly a work of art! I've been seeing them all over social media and had to stop by when I was in the area. They are very detailed and beautiful pieces, definitely on the pricier side but I think of it as a novelty/special occasion item. We were in the Northern Virginia area and decided to try Layered in Fairfax. We had attempted to visit when they first opened, but at that time they were only doing limited batches. Now, they seem to be producing desserts continuously to keep up with demand. The location appears to be in a former McDonald's building, which gives you a sense of the space, it's fairly large. There are a variety of seating options, and it looks like they've added a new outdoor patio as well. There's a small self-service area for some treats, but most items are ordered from behind the counter. We arrived around 8 PM, and it was busy. We waited about 15 minutes to place our order and another 15 minutes to receive our drinks and desserts. We tried the Yuzu & Limoncello, Rocher, and Café Au Lait desserts (each around $9.40), along with a tiramisu latte ($6.40). Everything was delicious--creamy, well-balanced, and full of flavor. Prices are on the higher side. The cashier was friendly, though it seemed like they might have been understaffed. That said, the team handled the crowd well. I ordered the banana cream matcha which indeed tasted like banana. I didn't taste much of the matcha but it may due to how strong the banana cream flavor is. I personally would not get it again. I came here on a sunday afternoon and we got the strawberry pastry, ube cheesecake and strawberry matcha. My friend and I both thought that everything was ok but a little too sweet. I thought the strawberry pastry was a bit underwhelming in terms of taste as I thought it was would be an outer chocolate covering/shell with a refreshing cream but the cream was more reminiscent of almost a cream cheese flavor that I didn't really like and there was no hard shell. Layered is so good! I recently found out that it is owned by my other favorite coffee spot Chateau de Chantilly which is usually our once a week spot! For coffees I recommend the pistachio latte which is made with homemade pistachio cream. The pastries are amazing. I have tried a few. I love the pistachio one. It is my favorite and I don't feel like it gets enough love. My second favorite was the mango. My husband and son were hoping it would be sweeter...but for myself and my daughter we love it the way it was. The lemon was not our favorite. I came here days after the snow storm, so there was no line when I went around 4:30 pm yesterday. Got my mango and strawberry desserts quickly; though, my crème brûlée drink took a while to make due to orders before mine. Workers were friendly. The mango dessert had a hard shell that I cracked through with my fork. It tasted more like lilikoi inside - very tart. I tasted some mango too, but it really tasted more like lilikoi. I saw fruit chunks of what looked like mango but also fruit purée that looked and tasted like lilikoi, but I'm not certain due to this being a "mango" dessert. Still, it tasted great. I can handle that level of tartness. Presentation was very nice. Looked like a real mango. I thought the strawberry dessert would have the same texture until I took a closer look. It was softer in appearance. When I pierced it with my fork, I saw that the outside of the dessert was like firm cream. This dessert had a milder taste. It had some form of strawberry puree mixed with lots of cream. It was a hint too much cream for me, but it was good enough for me to finish. The stem (calyx) of the strawberry dessert was made of fondant, and the dessert was presented on a cookie. The cookie was stuck to the plate and fragile, so it easily crumbled as I tried to scrape it off the plate. It was almost like a Bischoff cookie. The crème brûlée was delicious. It came in a tiny cup. There was a lot of sugar at the bottom of the cup. I wasn't prepared for that. I didn't know these desserts were going to be $12-13 each. It seems a bit much. The location is very good because of it being in Fairfax and stand alone building makes it easy to access and find. They had many desserts and drink options.we decided on mango shaped cake, lemon shaped cake, rocher type mouse cake, Carmel brûlée latte and camp fire hot chocolate. Everything tasted pretty average but the camp fire halal hot marshmallow hot chocolate was really yummy. I would love to go back there again try other drinks and desserts with time. I was so excited to try Layered after waiting for the hype to die down, but it ended up feeling overhyped for me. I came specifically for their viral pastries and left pretty disappointed. It is a tad difficult to find if you do not know the area, but there are a lot of parking spots and the sign is facing the lot. Seating: There is one long table in the sun, where most people are telecommuting/WFH. The rest are smaller tables, for 2-3 people. There is a restroom on site, to the left when you enter the building. Overall, a bougier side of the Chateau de Chantilly, but a warm welcome in Fairfax City. If they weren't cute looking, I know people would be more disappointed. However, the Rocher and Yuzu & Limonchello cakes were pretty good (and also the cheaper of the cakes). The Rocher had good texture to it, and the Yuzu & Limonchello had more depth than the Lemon cake. I've been twice during a weekday around noon time and would say I've never had to deal with the hype/lines. Plenty of pastries but I've never had the fruit pastries myself. I've gotten the cafe au lait dessert which I liked a good amount since I love coffee flavours. I tried their gingerbread tiramisu dessert for their winter selection and I thought it was fine - it was more tiramisu with some ginger elements here and there. Although, I wouldn't say these pastries are worth $9; moreso it's the aesthetic rather than the taste for these. I like their tiramisu latte! I've gotten their coco Pandan matcha and thought it was average - got watery fast and not really strong flavour there. I like working remotely here, although the wifi did die on me once when I needed it... the only outlets I'm aware of are the ones at the island table, which I end up sitting at. I don't know why there are so many chairs at that island though. I recommend the bathroom to the immediate right if you ever need it - it's huge, clean, and nice structure LOL. I must say I was influenced, I saw layered on TikTok and I was so eager to give it a try. We ordered the following cakes: mango, strawberry, café au lait, and a vanilla brûlée. The mango cake had a coating that had an amazing crunch to it. To me, the cake tastes exactly like mango. My daughter tried the strawberry cake and she really enjoyed it, this cake sits on a cookie. The café au lait had a nice a wonderful coffee flavor. This was my favorite cake. The Vanilla brûlée was my least favorite, I don't like the texture. It had a great vanilla flavor. Since we're months out from its grand opening and the social media hype, Layered is not nearly as crowded, and you don't have to worry about anything selling out. There's a lot of indoor and outdoor seating; it's a big space with some nice decor. We stopped in after going to the library right next door and just grabbed some drinks. I ordered the banana bread matcha drink, and it came out quickly. All iced drinks come out in a plastic cup without a lid (you can put one on yourself later). The drink is good; you can really taste the cinnamon and banana. It's incredibly creamy since it has a cold foam-esque topping, but it's also sweet. I know that it's a specialty flavored drink, but you can't taste the matcha over everything added.
