I am absolutely in LOVE with the vegetarian dish (available only on Wed and Sat) here!!!! I have never tasted a dish like this (and I eat a lot of Asian food). The tofu is perfectly cooked and the sauce is amazing. The sticky rice, crispy onion and vegetable roll that comes with it is the perfection combination of different tastes to the palette. I only know the vegetarian plate, but you really only need to know the vegetarian plate. The vegetarian plate is available on Wednesdays and Saturdays and is, as far as I can tell, basically the same thing every time: fried tofu in black bean sauce with caramelized onions, a big scoop of rice, and a side of either veggies or a spring roll. I have only been on Wednesdays and have always wound up with the veggies, so maybe the roll is a Saturday thing. The veggie plate is huge, delicious, and inexpensive. It could easily be two meals if you're not too hungry. The only real downside here is that it's cash only, and seating is a little limited, so you might want to get it to go. read more

I had to try the vegetarian plate after reading so many reviews about how great it is. And everyone was correct! I rarely get vegetarian specific meals but this one was so good. I definitely wouldn't mind getting it again. They also gave a large serving. I had more than half left over. You get your money's worth. The food also came out very fast and there were about six other people there around the time I went. Everyone's order came out quickly. As others have mentioned, this place isn't fancy. They keep it clean though. Locals and people just passing by stopped in to eat. Most people sat outside to enjoy the nice weather and ninth street. The only lady working was very nice. No credit cards taken here only cash! From this mom & pop operation I had the Imperial Roll which was very good, but I wish it was not fried and I had the chicken curry. The chicken curry had cut up potatoes, onions and carrots and chicken over white or fried rice. The rice was good and cooked nicely. The vegetables were cooked good and soft, the chicken was fully cooked but hardly any flavor. I could smell the faint waft of curry, but very little. And it was listed as a spicy dish, but it wasn't spicy. I have had hotter glasses of beer than this. I would not order the chicken curry again, but i would order the Imperial Roll again. It can get pretty busy (since this is their most popular night), so come off peak. I've never actually ordered anything but the vegetarian special (available only on Wednesdays and Saturdays), but that plate is one of my favorite foods ever. The tofu is fried perfectly crisp on the outside but still soft on the inside, and the black bean sauce is finger-lickin' good. I don't even get the summer roll that usually comes with it.... just more tofu and rice please. :) I'm taking a one-star deduction only because the other things that I've tried (from picking off other people's plates) have all been very mediocre. Bahn's Cuisine is simply delicious. I began going there for lunch over a year ago, and since then, a month does not go by without me stopping in at least once (often times once a week). Wednesdays and Saturdays they serve a special menu, and while I love the offerings on these days, I recommend you try them any day of the week. If you pick something off their "hand written" specials menu, you cannot go wrong. Be advised, the place is small and kinda old, so the atmosphere may be lacking, but I don't go there for spa treatment, I go there to eat excellent Asian food that you can't get anywhere else. I liked my dish at Banh's yet was not in love with it. We dined on a steamy Saturday night and it was a sweltering 95 degrees and it felt even hotter inside Banh's. Couple that with a dish of soup, it was a sweltering combo and I have to come back another time when it is cooler. Banh's is small and a hole in the wall on 9th street. If you want a Chinese or Vietnamese dish for $7 in styrofoam and plasticware, this is the place. The menu is simple with a few standard dishes and then on Wednesday and Saturdays there are a few more Vietnamese dishes. This is a cash-only establishment and I saw a good number of guests pick up their take-out orders. The owner was very welcoming and explained where the utensils were and pointed to the daily specials. Bring your cash, they do not accept plastic! I got the tofu/veggie pho to go. It was not a style of pho that I was used to however I appreciated the portion size and packaging. The broth and noodles veggies tofu were packaged separately, when combined, the larger bowl held the whole meal perfectly! One of the worst Asian meals ever, actually one of the worst meals ever across the board. The selection was sad to begin with, and of the few selections, the food was just bad. They used the same large chunks of vegetables used for stir fry in cold noodles, which made it impossible to chew, and it seemed like they just threw whatever stir fry they have left over as topping. The only drinks thru had was coke products, no Vietnamese coffee, tea whatsoever. We threw half the food away.... Would have thrown more away if we weren't starving and it took forever to park. read more

This is not a Vietnamese restaurant. They only have may be 5 so call Vietnamese named food, but they do not taste or look anywhere close to any Pho you went to. It is a Chinese restaurant. And they only have 5 main entrée and another may be 5 side items/appetizer to choose from. Food is barely acceptable. Listed price on the menu is good deal in the area, but bad deal when you accounted for the quality and quantity of the food. Genuine Vietnamese food in Durham. Forget Pho. Vietnamese food is so much more and I'm more than happy that there's a place just down the street from me where I can find authentic Vietnamese specials. Asian on-campus food at Duke is just terrible, but a few steps away, tucked into an inconspicuous building, is a wonderful gem of real, home-cooked Vietnamese food, just the way my grandma and mom make it. It's cheap, fresh, and delicious - and the owner is so, so nice as well. I've never had a bad meal from Banh's - in fact, I've never NOT had an amazing one. I always try the new specials on the menu (Wednesdays and Saturdays have Vietnamese specials) from the Hu Tieu to the Bun Thit Nuong or the Chicken Sate, and they've always been mouthwatering and delicious. Unlike most other Asian restaurants, Banhs doesn't leave you with a stomachache. The food is light and refreshing yet full of flavor. The meat is grilled just right, but don't forget to try some of the amazing veggie dishes. They say that the best gifts come in small packages, and this hole-in-the-wall restaurant is so much better than all the new upscale places popping up around it. If you're a Duke student and you're wondering where to find good Asian food - ditch Panda Express, Dragongate, and don't even bother busing over to Chapel Hill for Lime and Basil. This place is the real deal. Early warning: It closes early. I live across the street so I didn't bother to check the hours and have been in front of the closed restaurant twice already. Once, it was after 8 pm, which is their closing time, and the other time was on Sunday (it is closed on Sundays). Anyways, I really like this place, the food is really good for the price. I love vietnamese food. Get the daily specials if you go. They change every day but they are really tasty, have vegetables and fairly good portions of meat. I ordered one that had pork, rice noodles and peanuts and it was DE-LI-CIOUS. The next day they didn't have it so I had to settle for chicken with ginger, sticky rice and broccoli. As of late, I've been craving banh mi but just don't know where to go. When my coworkers said they were going to get Vietnamese for lunch, I tagged along. Sadly, Banh's didn't have any banh mi. Seriously? We got there a little after 12pm and the place was packed. Every table was occupied. I tried their vegetarian special on Weds: fried tofu in black bean sauce, sticky rice and steamed broccoli. Apparently this dish is the reason why the place was so busy. The portion was generous. The tofu were huge and the sauce was yummy. If I were dining by myself, I probably would have licked my plate clean to get every. last. drop. With a fountain drink, lunch was $9.05. For now Banh's gets three stars. I'll have to come back to try other traditional dishes but if you find yourself at Banh's on Weds, don't pass up the fried tofu in black bean sauce. After reading some reviews, I knew I wanted to come in on a Wednesday or Saturday to try the Vietnamese specials menu. I stopped by on a Wednesday after work. There was a steady stream of people picking up their orders and those choosing to dine-in. The cashier was a really sweet lady. I think there is limited staff in the back which caused some delay between getting take out orders prepared and getting food out to the diners. Due to the gloom and rain outside, I ordered the Hu Tieu soup (special #1). It came out pretty fast since the soup components are prepared ahead of time and just need to be thrown together (very normal for Vietnamese cuisine). From the chives to the carmelized shallots, the soup tasted very authentic and almost like my mom made it herself! While I think the portion size and soup toppings could be a little more plentiful, for the price and taste this place definitely hits the spot! read more

Banh's is the source of comfort food for me in Durham, NC (my home town). It's a small hole-in-the-wall -- plastic plates, sink outside the two gender-specific cubicles -- but the folks are delightful, the food is good, and an amazing value. Get the daily special, whatever it is, and it will arrive freshly cooked, steaming, and loaded with vegetables (usually onions, carrots, and broccoli). Caveat: You might want to time your arrival so that you get food freshly cooked, rather than something that's been sitting on the steam table. I also avoid Saturdays; I don't find the more supposedly Vietnamese dishes offered to be that good. read more
