There is a category of Los Angeles bar that exists outside the city's relentless cycle of openings and closings and soft launches and Instagram hype, a category that doesn't require a door policy or a design concept borrowed from a Wes Anderson film. It is the bar that walks in and earns the neighborhood's trust in a few short years, the bar that feels like it's been there forever because it figured out immediately what it was supposed to be. Tiny's Hi-Dive on Pico is that bar. It occupies the old Arsenal space, which if you've been in West LA long enough you watched go through its own identity crisis -- I had a trip-hop DJ residency there in a previous life, before it transmogrified into some paisley-wallpapered ersatz club that couldn't decide what it wanted to be. Tiny's has no such confusion. The name says dive. The floors say otherwise. The cocktails are made well, the food is made well, and the place is clean, which shouldn't be noteworthy but in a city where "dive bar" has become shorthand for either performative squalor or actual squalor, it is. It's a Chicago bar, which in Los Angeles means something specific. It means the hot dogs are correct. It means there are Italian beef sandwiches, and the Italian beef sandwiches are not a novelty item or a nod to a trend but an actual offering from people who understand the architecture of giardiniera and jus and thinly sliced beef on a roll that's engineered to get soggy at exactly the right rate. The food at Tiny's is way better than it has any right to be in a bar where nobody would blame you for ordering nothing but beer, and this is the tell -- when a bar kitchen is good without needing to be good, it means someone in the back actually gives a damn, not because the Yelp reviews demand it but because that's how they were raised. The happy hour lasts most of the day, which is either a business model or a philosophy, and at Tiny's the distinction is academic. The effect is that the place fills in waves and each wave brings a different crowd. The retirement set drifts in around lunch -- guys who've been coming here long enough to have a spot at the bar and a drink that appears without being ordered. By happy hour the mix gets eclectic: locals, people waiting out the particular misery of westbound Pico traffic at five-thirty, students, the kind of neighborhood cross-section that only happens at a place where a beer and a hot dog won't cost you twenty dollars. Later it gets busier and louder and on Wednesday nights there's live band karaoke, which is the superior form of karaoke, the form where actual musicians play behind you so your version of "White Wedding'" sounds ten percent less terrible than it would over a backing track. The jukebox is killer, which is a small detail that is not a small detail. A jukebox tells you everything about who owns a bar -- whether they trust their customers, whether they have taste, whether they understand that the difference between a good night and a great night is often just the right song at the right moment. The owners of Tiny's understand this. They are truly excellent people, the kind of owner-operators who are in the room and who care about the room and who have built a place that reflects something genuine about themselves rather than something calculated about the market. West Los Angeles is not a neighborhood that gets romanticized. It's a place you drive through, a stretch of Pico and Olympic and Santa Monica Boulevard that connects the Westside to the rest of the city, lined with strip malls and dry cleaners and the kind of mid-century commercial architecture that nobody photographs. It does not have a brand. It does not have a moment. What it has, on Pico, is Tiny's Hi-Dive -- a bar where they learn your dog's name before they learn yours, where there are treats behind the bar, where the bartenders will ask about your dog when you come in and mourn with you when they pass. Family friendly til 7pm on weekdays. They even had a mini plush they gifted our toddler. Frozen irish coffee hits the spot especially in the heat. The usuals at the bar and bartender were all laid back and welcoming to us. Great dive bar. They have a good happy hour Mon -Fri until 8pm. $8 select cocktails and wells so the buzz comes cheap lol. More spacious than it appears from outside. Plenty of TVs on the wall to watch a game. The bar area has a pool table, there's a room with a few arcade games, and another room with more seating and a projector for games. The food is decent bar food, good for soaking up the booze. Service was good. Friendly staff. There's street parking but you might have to walk a block or two. read more

Tiny's is a manufactured dive bar. This building used to house the Arsenal, which at one point had been a real dive bar before it gentrified and later went out of business. Today, Tiny's provides a dive-bar-esque product without the patina an actual dive bar would offer. That said, I like this place. The staff is friendly. Very friendly. Notably friendly. They have some good beer on tap, including Old Speckled Hen, which I don't see around that much. There's a Chicago expat thing going on here, which isn't really a draw for me, but it means they have malort, Chicago style hot dogs, and beef dips, all of which are fun. Of these things, the dog was my favorite. If you're hungry, the beef dip is more filling. The mozzarella sticks were decent. Some old barfly told me to try the frozen Irish coffee, so I did. It was pretty delicious - an Irish coffee milkshake. (Ok, Tiny's attracts some barflies - maybe it's a little more of a dive bar than I gave them credit for.) There are a few televisions - if I were a displaced Chicago fan, I'm guessing this might be a good game day spot. Tiny's is doing a lot of things well. With a little time and luck, I'm guessing they'll develop the authentic dive bar patina that I'm looking for out of a place like this. The service and drinks were five stars. The food isn't quite at that level - but I wasn't unhappy with the food I tried. I'd come here again and probably explore more of the menu if I were hungry. read more

This Chicagoan who's been living in LA for several years decided it was time to check out Tiny's Hi-Dive and it did not disappoint. I felt like I was home and I loved the moody vibe. We got there around 2 on a Saturday and the dark coolness inside was just what we needed for the scorcher that was taking place outside. Found a cozy table in the corner and I ordered a Painkiller and Vegan Burger with fries. The Painkiller wasn't the best but the Vegan Burger was so good! It was actually a black bean Buber which was yum! Fries were tasty although a bit heavy handed on the salt. Second round of drinks I ordered a white wine which was perfect. I rarely leave negative reviews, but my recent experience at Tiny's Bar was disappointing enough that it needs to be addressed. I visited on a weekday evening during what appeared to be a quiet drag bingo night. (October 28th) There was no one at the door when I arrived, the bouncer was playing pool, which wasn't an issue, but it set the tone for the lack of attentiveness that followed. The primary concern was the service at the bar. The sole female bartender on duty was noticeably rude to multiple guests, not just me. While I didn't take it personally, this level of unprofessionalism reflects poorly on management and should be addressed. I ordered fries, a smash burger, a fountain drink, and a beer. The fries were well seasoned and the burger was decent, but both items arrived late and cold despite the bar not being busy. When I returned to the bar for a refill (something the bartender had previously told me was available) she didn't acknowledge me and instead responded with a dismissive "What happened" The tone was unnecessarily hostile and completely unprovoked. I get it you're annoyed but it's very uncalled for and quite frankly unprofessional. It's disappointing because Tiny's has the potential to be a great neighborhood spot, but this experience left a bad impression. Unfortunately, I won't be returning and I feel everyone that's ever felt racism in some type of way should just not come here either bc what I and everyone experienced is borderline racism. Great deals on happy hour and a decent selection on draft. The Smash Burger is legit and so is the Italian Beef! And it was big! Easily enough to share. The beef was tender, the bread had the right dip and it was tasty! Could have used more sweet peppers but it hit the spot. Tater tots are definitely the way to go. Honestly, it's just a solid bar. Happy hour is every day 2 pm - 8 pm. You order at the bar. There's games, a photo booth, a pool table, plenty of seating. It's very chill. Breakfast is available until 3 pm. I ordered the breakfast burrito at 2:30 pm. It's a decently-sized burrito, and it's delicious (eggs in this economy?!), so I was good with food for the rest of the day. My friend and I are fans of the $5 mystery shot because it's a drink and a game at the same time. My friends are also fans of the chili fries and soft pretzel. When we came we did not know that Wednesday night is karaoke night! It was amazing because it was a live band backing you up for it. We ordered a moscow mule & new york sour. The moscow mule was yummy, tasted like ginger beer. The new york sour was way stronger. I don't personally enjoy cocktails, but to me it tasted mainly like a dry red wine. This was a very fun bar that my buddy took me to late afternoon when I was visiting. I'm a fan of these local type bars and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the place was way bigger than expected; it essentially had three room. The main room with the bar, a side room with games, and another room that bands can play in, apparently. My buddy and I shot some hoops while we waited for some onion rings and fries to come out. I was looking for a happy hour in or near Sawtelle and found this spot! We went on a Thursday at about 5pm. When you enter, you choose a seat and you'll see a card at your table with a QR code to access the menu. Once you're ready, you place your order at the bar. The drinks were great but the food... AMAZING. The bread on our sandwiches were fluffy and soft and the meat was flavorful. The chili cheese fries reminded me a lot of Tommy's but better (I enjoy a thinner, crispier fry like these with my chili). We were getting full but still had to finish the pretzel. It was warm, soft, and went so well with the cheese and mustard provided. After eating we went into the little arcade room. There was basketball, a pinball machine, Photo Booth, and golf game. This unabashed dive bar has a clear Chicago theme to it. This is one of those places where I would've loved to go to when I was younger lol. It's a lot of fun, but it's definitely a spot that I could see my younger self hanging out frequently. We came here earlier in the day so it wasn't super crowded. There's so many amazing little hidden gems that are out there. You juts have to find them.... It was a last minute thing to meet up with some girlfriends for a birthday drink. They offer happy hour with a decent selection of bar food and drinks. Believe happy hour is from 5-8. The bar is pretty chill and a nice cool vibe. There's the main bar right when you walk in as well as other section that boost load of television. Major place if you want to come and watch sports. But the main attraction, it was drag bingo going on that night. It was the best time. Games are free but please do Tip as she's graciously hosting the night and it was a blast. It filled up fast so seating was limited if you arrived late. The games were a blast, with prizes. We had such a great time that we for sure will back with a group.
