A casual speakeasy next to the Venice sign that serves decent drink with a pool table. Cocktails are nothing exquisite (not watered down, nice). It's just a great speakeasy without loud music that you can hold conversation during the weekdays (not sure about weekend, also never been to their rooftop). I think drinks selection here are a bit limited to my tastes in terms of cocktails, their speciality cocktails aren't unique. Service is standard, no attitude. Ambience is cool, dimmed, casual and somewhat intimate. The bar and bathroom are clean, nothing to complain about. Wouldn't travel all the way to here for this but would stop by again if I happen to be in the area, if I want somewhere not loud and don't want to be interrupted. Overall, there are other bars on the same street. So it's not a bad idea to start here and bar hop, if you want to be elsewhere that's more vibey. read more

Ok - i'll admit it. In full disclosure, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to venturing out for nightlife in Venice - the slum by the sea and these dive bar type places - but this place nails it. Now there were definitely some weirdos but they were at a minimum. - Attended this place as the recommendation of a friend for my birthday as they were hosting a DJ at the lower level of this place. The music and vibe in this place was perfect. You can't go wrong with a pool table, intimate lighting and some R&B background vibes. - The bartenders were great. Attentive. Accommodating. We came here after Belle's Beach House because one friend wanted to dance to hip-hop and because the crowd at Belle's had us questioning our age and life choices. Townhouse has two sides, we followed the music downstairs to the basement where the dance floor and bar are. Best decision of the night. The music was a mix of hip-hop and familiar Top 40 hits, so you could dance and know the words. Drinks were flowing, vibes were right, and suddenly we weren't ancient anymore. Really cool spot! Great music, yummy drinks and unique ambiance. There is a room of booths all very spacious however it is soooooo ridiculously dark in there. My eyes took a really really long time to adjust and even then it never really got clear enough to see well. They have a "club" on their downstairs level that has a cover fee of $10 but we didn't go in. It does get pretty packed so if that's not an environment you like this may not be the place for you. Townhouse definitely has the cool factor / we went for music and dancing and the music was great - that's the reason for the four stars. Would've given this place three stars because of the fact that it is not set up well for crowds and that it is very congested and in the basement, which if you're slightly claustrophobic and if there's a full crowd (wall to wall people) it's gonna be a challenge!! that said the bar prices sre reasonable but is hard to get to downstairs; but upstairs there's a cool pool room and the bathrooms are clean and nice! All in I would probably come back. I should also mention that the I found the people working there and the security staff very polite and doing a good job. read more

Great place to duck into when you got your fill of Sun & Sand. Dark, perfect temperature bar. Outside is an area for live entertainment & what a show #blackartdistrikt put on, improvised Jazz R&B. I knew they were gonna be good when I saw some brass instruments. The trumpet playing was very Miles, if you know what I mean. Physically Aggressive Security & False Accusations -- Unacceptable at Townhouse I'm leaving this 1-star review not because of the vibe, music, or atmosphere of Townhouse -- in fact, it's a spot I've enjoyed before. I'm writing this because what happened to me last night was serious and completely unacceptable. I was on a first date. We got in, IDs were checked, and we ordered two shot-and-beer combos at the bar. It was a chill night -- not crowded at all. Music was playing downstairs and I wanted to check it out. I went to the usual gentleman stationed near the pool table, who told me I'd need a wristband from the front security. No problem. When I got to the front and asked, the security guard said it was $20 per person. I agreed to pay $50 up front. He looked at me -- very judgmentally -- and told me no. I explained that I'm new to the area but come here regularly, and mentioned that the older Black gentleman who usually works security (but wasn't there that night) typically lets me in. That's when everything went sideways. The guard got upset and said I wasn't allowed to use the word Black to describe someone. I was stunned. There was no disrespect in my words -- I was simply referencing someone I've interacted with before. I calmly explained that I didn't mean anything offensive. For context, my best friend is Black, and I do not throw around identity terms carelessly or disrespectfully. Still, he denied me entry and was visibly irritated. Two white men then came up from the basement, and when I asked if it was worth going down, they said it was "meh" -- but mentioned they paid the cover. So why was I being singled out? In frustration, I said "f*ck you" and went back inside to grab my date. Moments later, the security guard followed me inside and physically grabbed me by the arm -- aggressively -- to drag me out. I told him to let go because he was hurting me. He wouldn't. I turned to the bartender who had served us earlier, looking for help, and he just raised his hands like he couldn't get involved. Then the security guard told me I was being kicked out because I "called him the N-word." That is a complete lie. I have never used that word in my life. I was in shock. The man from the pool table then came up to back his story. I was being cornered and falsely accused -- just so they could justify the aggressive behavior. We left, humiliated. This morning, I woke up with a big bruise on my arm from where I was grabbed. To the owners or management: feel free to review your security footage -- it will play out exactly as I described. This isn't about drinks, DJs, or ambiance. This is about accountability. Your security staff laid hands on a woman and made a false accusation to justify it. I expect you to take this seriously. read more

Boy is it dark in here! Located on the Venice strip - so no adjacent parking. At the entrance there will be security to check ID and bags. Walked in to find a not so crowded bar with booths in one section to sit and chat. Happy Hour is offered so suggest to stop by during this time as the drinks could get pretty pricey here! Their cocktails are so good, the bartenders are professional and you can tell they have experience making cocktails. The oldest bar in Venice Beach with great vibe. We stopped here for a few drinks after visiting Venice Beach for the first time. I really enjoyed the decor and atmosphere this place creates. Everything was super organised and clean. There were cosy booths and plenty stools to sit on by the bar. Menu offers good selection of cocktails, beers, and some wine. The bartender was friendly and advised us on the drinks order. It's a great bar to come to and relax with friends after work or during weekend adventures. read more

Over priced. Paid way to much for 2 espresso martinis that were frankly not pleasant to drink. The martinis were served in a wine glass and were not topped with any espresso beans. The staff was nice but the payment system was a little suspicious with them picking out a preloaded tip for you. So several years ago, I came here often. I got to know George who's a tequila guru. He was kind enough on one date I had to share all his knowledge about tequila. Unsure if George still is a bar tender her or not. Kind heart and friendly af. I've also been here for several of my favorite friends bands, back in it's day. One particular night I met a man who might have changed my life run off to vegas said yes and had a couple of kids. Ha! Good looking crowd adventurers and thrill seekers. But....... that guy and I never had the coffee the next day he asked for. Some things are soooo good, that they're tooooooo good. When I left his place I locked the door behind me as I walked out and he was already late to where he needed to be. A bearded dark haired guy with a surf board who lived off the Venice boardwalk. Yes, this too could happen to you. Another time, I met complete strangers and he was so sweet calling my date his lady already. Point is he was older friendly and kind hearted, I did give him a hug and my date didn't like that too much. I'm an old soul I hug people from my childhood neighborhood. Anyway, the spot can be a girls night a guys night, a date night, hell bring your family night and show them a good time. Come with a sense of taste and a reason to dance or play pool. Get ready to get sweaty with 1,000+ Los Angeles locals. Townhouse is a multi-story bar/club in Venice Beach. The drinks are expensive, the music is pounding, and you can expect a 20+ minute wait for a bathroom stall. Since this club is partially underground, the lower story is both humid and cramped. Once we made it to the ground floor I felt a lot less claustrophobic and started to really enjoy my Saturday night! The main level hosts a large bar, booths, and pool tables. At nighttime it's largely standing room and you're packed in like sardines. This does add to the party atmosphere and easily gets you chatting with strangers! My biggest complaint were the bathroom stalls. The bathrooms were gender neutral and included about six stalls and a communal sink. The interior of the stalls were pretty horrendous. There were also a number of guys being rowdy/sketchy in the waiting area, so I'd recommend posting a security guard in this space in the future. read more

I had a really great server, who I believed was named Michelle. I am really unfamiliar with alcohol and I think I want to keep it that way. She brought me a drink that was nameless but what she personally likes and it was one of the best cocktails I've had in a while. I like sweet things, so if you don't like the taste of alcohol, definitely mention that when you order a drink. My old friend took me here because she had promised to take me to see comedy standup shows forever. Now that we were in the same place at the same time, we coordinated and ended up here. Watching some up and coming comedians can be a fun experience as well as a stressful one. Humor is always iffy, and I find people nowadays are always complaining that you can't make jokes about anything anymore. I find I have plenty of great material to work with still that doesn't perpetuate violence against marginalized peoples or demeans them. Just my two cents on the state of comedy. read more

Two story bar with a DJ downstairs right by the Venice sign. I've come here multiple times before for a night out, but had a very unpleasant experience this past Saturday. My two main issues are: 1. Rules were being made haphazardly, some of which seemed personally biased. For example, the bouncer asked our group (1 guy, 3 girls) to pay $10/head. I have never been asked to pay cover before, nor were other groups paying cover that night. 2. A different group cut in front of our group, and lied about being there before us. When confronted by us, they still remained in line and the bouncer did nothing to intervene. Overall, I'm disappointed by the poor crowd management and indifference of the bouncers. There are multiple places to go out in Venice, so I would steer clear from Townhouse and head elsewhere (i.e. James Beach, the Brig, and the Lincoln to name a few). read more

This place scammed my partner. Her card was charged twice in one night -- once for her actual bill and a second time for 2x the price of the bill. What was a $53.10 bill ended up being $160 because of a second mysterious $106.20 charge. Calls to them didn't produce a result so we charged back the card. Townhouse disputed the transaction so we're still struggling to get a fair result. The sketchiest part is, when she went to pay at the bar, they didn't know where her card is and were adimant that they didn't have it. They mysteriously found it a few minutes later. The bill that was more expensive and not hers was charged first. It seems like they charged her for someone else's bill and then charged her for her actual bill, which would explain why they couldn't find her card at first. Also, it's a little suspicious that the overcharge is exactly twice the price of the real bill, don't you think? Don't go here unless you want a night out paying for drinks you didn't buy. read more

On Saturday July 20, a group of my friends arrived at this bar to celebrate our friends birthday. We have had good experiences here before and we're hoping we would only continue to good times, however on the night of the 20th it was exactly the opposite. My friend was racially profiled and was not allowed into the bar because of her skin color. When we tried to discern what it was that was preventing our friend from coming in, the doorman said she was too drunk to enter. While visiting LA for our friends birthday she was standing at the entrance in tears confused as to how she could be told she was too drunk to enter as the white girl next to her who was falling on the floor was allowed to enter. I will NEVER enter this place again, I will tell everyone I know to NEVER enter this place again, I will tell everyone who ask about this place to NEVER go there. I don't care how much money a place makes or in what city it's in, this is the 21st century and racism is unacceptable in any shape or form.
