Ate here solo on a rainy Saturday afternoon. I was able to be seated in about 10 mins, whereas I saw group after group leave once they were told the wait would be an hour and 45 minutes. Once I was seated, my order was taken almost immediately, which would have been a bit annoying had I not already known what I wanted. My food came out quickly and the presentation was lovely. The French Toast is gorgeous, but I don't think the toast holds its own and hinges on being heavily topped. Nutella, granola, strawberries, bananas, blackberries, cashews, pepitas, granola, etc. It also already comes with the syrup drizzled on it, which in hindsight, I could've done without. During the time I ate, no one checked on me at all. I wanted to order a coffee, but never got to. I figured once there was a napkin on my plate my waiter would come back, but no. The person who took my order walked past me many times, I made eye contact, said excuse me. Nothing. I wasn't in a rush, so I just dawdled and read on my phone. Eventually, someone came up from the cellar and as soon as he walked in, scanned the room and checked on me. That same person cashed me out as well. I didn't get their name, but they had locs. I think this is a solid breakfast spot, but not worth the long waits. The breakfast options are pretty limited and I think that the prices are a bit steep. I work near here, so I'd return eventually but I'm in no rush.
Was walking around and was headed to the east village, but wanted to stop for a late lunch and found Banter from a quick Google search. The space was cozy and there were plenty of tables when we arrived, which quickly changed as hungry and cold people streamed in. I had a matcha and we shared the banter bowl and salmon toast. Both were so delicious, savory, filling, and certainly the healthiest thing we had on our winter vacation. The service was attentive, helpful, and very kind, and I really recommend it and would love to come back!
Two things I desperately needed during my recent trip to NYC were great breakfast and to not feel rushed! Banter felt like the perfect combination of "in the mix" dining and a break from the overwhelming rush of a New York morning. The staff practically read my mind with every request, they were friendly, accomodating and swift with their service. The food and coffee was excellent - the avocado toast being my personal highlight from my few visits. This place rocks, will definitely be returning
Can I have this for breakfast everyday? We stopped by early Sunday morning and were seated immediately. With some 70s/80s light r&b music setting the vibe (think songs like Sade), got a big cup of coffee (no refills?) and a big breakfast. There are variations you can get, scrambled vs poached, toast vs no toast, etc but they are all generously sized and very tasty semi-bowls. I loved mine with avocado while my dining companion adored the kale salad. Service was quick and the place is small and cozy, perfect for those cool autumn mornings. We will be back next time we're in the village. Yum!
Great cozy cafe with yummy all day breakfast options! We got the folded scramble, green juice and sweet potato fries. All delicious, fresh and made w quality ingredients!!! We even tried the vegemite for fun since it was on the menu but wasn't a hit.. will definitely be back to try more options!
Banter turned out to be such a happy surprise. A group of six of us stopped in unexpectedly for breakfast when our original spot was closed, and it ended up being the perfect backup. The coffee was excellent, the ambience was warm and inviting, and every plate at the table looked and tasted delicious. Portions were very generous, and everything felt incredibly wholesome and satisfying, from the food to the beverages. Would absolutely come back here, especially for a cozy, relaxed breakfast with friends or coworkers.
I would STRONGLY recommend adding yourself to the online waitlist about 1.5-2 hours before you plan on arriving. This place is small and popular and the wait can be very long. For a table of 4, we were on the waitlist for about 2 hours, but I will say I think it was worth. I chose the big breakfast platter and wow wee; everything tasted so fresh and healthy, and it was such a large, filling meal. The tomato jam is to die for! Some of my friends got the French toast and they easily rank it in top three best they've ever had. I didn't try it cause I was stuffed, but from their descriptions, the batter (?) was perfectly distributed throughout the bread. The Nutella was a worry cause of the sweetness it could add (in combination with the syrup) but it actually added a much needed bitterness to cut the sweet syrup. Thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast here and looking forward to trying the French toast in the future!
This place is a nice place to come to during the week because we were seated right away and it was pretty empty. It's nice and fresh inside so it's a good pit stop, although the restroom was so stuffy and humid. I most likely wouldn't not come back because of the prices and flavor here. I would say that the inside looked clean but not overly aesthetic to make up for the prices they have. If you don't like sweet potato fries or salad they charge to substitute your side. The cute thing they do is give you a nice little post card to take with you.

Cute little place with a quick wait period (we were told 30 minutes but it was less than 15). Quick service and great food. The matcha needed to have honey added but after was perfect. Only downside is they don't have sharp knives so it's difficult to cut any of the toast. read more
Service was good. The food came out very quickly, about 5 minutes or less. We came here on a weekday around 12ish and sat down immediately. Certainly a well-balance meal, the Golden Folded Eggs had it all -- delicate and well-executed eggs, avocado, tasty bacon, sautéed mushrooms, and a kale salad. My meal was good, but it wasn't worth the $21 in my opinion. I expected more of a wow factor for this dish. If you are in the mood for a classic eggs breakfast, you'll enjoy this place, but the food is pretty average especially for the price. Banter is a great neighborhood breakfast option. The staff is super friendly, quick to greet and even laugh at my bad jokes. The vibes are good too - the music is relaxed, plenty of natural light, nice art on the walls. The food is both very appetizing looking and very tasty. Simple but good and done well. My cortado was a 10, a really nice espresso shot cut with just the right dash of milk and foam. The Nutella French Toast is rich and delicious without being too sweet. The berries and banana are fresh and perfectly ripe and the strawberries just macerated enough. The toasted oat gives a nice crunch and savory touch. read more

Stopped in for brunch on a Saturday with the dog the staff was very kind and accommodating. Got the fried chicken sandwich and wanted to love it but unfortunately did not. The bun was stale... the chicken was dry missing sauce or flavor... The sweet potato fries were super salty you can even see in the photo. Hope they fix - a chicken sandwich is a must have and must be top notch. read more
I honestly don't get the hype! There's a huge wait for mediocre brunch Food: i ordered the two eggs soft scrambled with halloumi becuase most of the other dishes contained bacon, which I don't like and they wouldn't substitute it unless with a charge. I thought the eggs were just fine but they did look pretty! The halloumi was such a small amount that I should not have gotten it! My friend ordered the poached eggs- and they instead gave her hard boiled eggs. The pesto is also very different than what I expected. Overall not the place that I would come again for Service: First, we waited for an hour! There were three of us and when we finally were ready to be seated, they placed us a all on one table which was so tight. They were slow to give us things like ketchup and when we were sitting nearing the end of our meal, they rushed with our check and told us that they had a huge wait so we need to leave. After a huge wait, and seating is to one table- I thought this was an awful experience. Ambience: it is very trendy and very busy! It is a cool Greenwich place but not worth it. This Greenwich Village spot has a charming brunch atmosphere with a lively vibe, though the food was just average. It's perfect for a casual chat with friends, but be sure to join their Yelp waitlist in advance to secure a table as it tends to fill up quickly. Came here on a Saturday around noon and it was around a 30 minute wait. We were number 27 in line but it moved pretty fast for 27 people in-front of us! Once we got there, we were seated under an awning where the heater wasn't great, but with a jacket on it was tolerable. The inside looked as though the seats were quite close together and it is not the biggest space. After 15 minutes of being seated, our waiter came to ask what we had wanted. We had ordered the golden folded eggs, a cappuccino, an espresso, martini, and the fried chicken sandwich. My favorite part of the meal was the chicken sandwich and the sweet potato fries with the maple syrup and spicy mayo sauce!! The golden folded eggs were also pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary - if I had to choose between the two, I would have picked the chicken sandwich. After being served our food we did not see our waiterand had to grab his attention for an additional drink. Overall a nice brunch experience, just be aware that things may take longer as it seemed short staffed. read more
My friend recommended this place for brunch when I first moved to NYC, and I got the chance to try it out today! It was a 30 minute walk for us, so we waitlisted about halfway through the walk for the popular Sunday brunch time and only needed to wait about 2-3 minutes after our arrival to be seated. We ordered the hot chocolate, nutella french toast, golden folded eggs, and fried chicken sandwich. Of all of these items, my favorite was probably the fried chicken sandwich that my partner ordered. The sandwich was pretty good (though the chicken patties were a bit thin), and the sweet potato fries were amazing -- super crispy on the outside, but very light and fluffy on the inside. I was really surprised at how this is possible, so I really enjoyed those! The golden folded eggs were very fluffy at first, but hardened up as they cooled it down so I didn't end up finishing them. The salad on the side and the mushrooms were both really good though! Everything else was fine, including the hot chocolate which was a tad sweet but one of the more enjoyable hot chocolates I've had in NYC so far. I think the only dish I didn't really like was the french toast, which was a bit too soggy/syrupy for my taste. read more

I'm so glad we decided to grab brunch here because the food is absolutely soooo delicious. We came here on a Thursday morning at around 9:45, and was able to grab a table for a party of 4. I think we had just missed their morning rush because they were pretty full. For drinks we got a mocha and latte with oat milk. The latte was good but I would definitely add another shot of espresso, and the mocha was a little too sweet. For the main dishes we got the Mushroom Toast and the Banter Bowl. There were so many mushrooms on the toast, and I absolutely loved that. I added a poached egg and got bacon on the side, but probably could've done without getting a side of bacon because I could only finish half lol. The Banter Bowl was filled with so many fresh ingredients making it very light and fulfilling. The service was great! Our waitress was very attentive and checked in multiple times throughout our stay. read more
Got the golden folded eggs and they were a bit disappointing... I think the folded eggs are not created equal here and I definitely got a bit unlucky. I think my eggs ended up being slightly over cooked so I didn't really get the soft scrambled texture I wanted. The smoked salmon and avo were as expected, but I will say the mushrooms and salad were really delicious. Mushrooms had a nice flavor and salad was really refreshing and filling. Overall, the dish was very filling, although I don't really think it was worth $20. read more
First time at Banter! The most resilient characteristic of these dishes was the freshness. All items were tasty and light which I know can be an unusual way to describe bacon and fried cheese but just try it for yourself. We ordered -banter big bfast: high fat moderate carb meal, filling but didn't make me feel disgusting like most large brunch meals do, my faves -green salad with chicken: large filling yet light tasty salad, chicken was tender Really enjoyed being able to sit on a slightly elevated deck, nice decor. Was very busy on a Saturday afternoon, waited about 45 minutes. Service was good and prices ares similar to other brunch spots in the area. read more

Lemonade (F) - Unfortunately, this was a very underwhelming $5 lemonade. The drink is borderline bland and tasteless, very uninspiring for a contemporary brunch cafe. The lemonades that I make are far more flavorful in natural lemon flavor and aesthetically pleasing. Nutella French Toast (B) - This dish is much better than the lemonade, reflected in both the taste and plating. Nutella French Toast is a good concept with lots of promise, and this dish just needs more syrup and perhaps a squeeze of citrus to cut the denseness of the nutella. The cafe itself is quite busy, and I found the servers to be quite blunt and frankly rude. I'm not sure I'd return after the subpar experience. read more

I visited Banter this past week on a slow weekday morning and had a great experience! The servers were kind and attentive, the food was yummy and didn't take too long to come out, and the ambience was quite nice too. I ordered the falafel bowl which came with 3 delicious & warm falafel, avocado, whipped feta dressing, a kale/broccoli law, cucumbers, harissa sauce, and pickled red onion. Overall DELICIOUS! I just found myself wishing it was 1) mixed up/tossed together and 2) not as pricey. I also got the lemon/ginger juice which I found delicious and not too sweet. I'd recommend trying it out! I got it right before my booster shot and I like to think it helped because I had minimal side effects (bear in mind, I also chugged water for days lol!). The drink made me feel healthy and, for the price, I felt it was certainly worth it. I appreciate places with a concise menu of consistently great food and this seems to be the place, however the average cost for a plate of food is around $16 which I found a tad much overall, but hey, that's NYC brunch. Overall, I'd certainly consider returning, but I'm still on the hunt for a more affordable brunch spot in downtown Manhattan. read more
It was a great meal and great service! Although their food did not wow me, it was very healthy and a great portion. My banter bowl came with huge pieces of smoke salmon. It's a super unique and tasty dressing. Chicken salad wraps were also excellent. Highly recommended and would definitely go back. read more

Decent place to get food but nothing particularly special. Enjoyed the iced chai latte. Tried their popular Nutella French toast, which was tasty but again, not particularly noteworthy. Also tried a bite of my friend's soft scrambled eggs, which were decent. Service was good; our waiter was very friendly. read more

I was super excited to try this spot for brunch as I saw the pictures and reviews. Unfortunately, the food was a total, absolute miss for me. Honestly, I have never left a restaurant so unsatisfied. I ordered the golden folded eggs (as the pictures make the egg look delicious) but the egg was absolutely disgusting. It did not taste like fresh eggs. It tasted exactly like liquid school cafeteria eggs - so spongy and plasticy. I could barely eat the eggs. The mushrooms were not good at all. The saving grace of this dish was the salad and bacon. The service was fine, and the waiters were nice. Unfortunately, the food was just a zero out of 10. Normally I could stomach food that I don't like, but sadly not in this case. read more

I'll cut to the chase and tell you that I don't have enough good things to say about their chicken sandwich. We also got the mushroom toast and while that was great too, the star for me was the fried chicken sandwich. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. The spicy aioli upped the ante and brought it home for me. It came with a side of the most delectable crispy sweet potato fries. I feel bad for the mushroom toast but if I were vegetarian, this would make me as happy as a clam. But it was completely overshadowed by the sandwich. For me. Also the service is as good as it gets. The wait staff is super friendly and accommodating. I'll come back for the chicken sandwich and you should too! read more

Omggggg to say this place is amazing is an understatement. I was visiting the city and my sister suggested we go here for brunch because it's one of her favorite places. I was certainly not disappointed. The weather that day was beautiful so we opted to dine outside. You're like in a little tent with overhead heaters which was nice! She ordered the mushroom wrap while I ordered the golden folded eggs. The spread and presentation of the food was gorgeous. Everything loooked soooo good! It tasted even better. My eggs were very fluffy. I also really enjoyed the thick-cut bacon. My favorite part of the meal was the green salad which consisted of kale and quinoa. Sooo good! The ingredients were very fresh as well. I can't wait to return here :) read more

This was the best brunch we had our whole time in NYC! We just happened to find this spot on Yelp for an early brunch and decided to check it out. We got the last table in their cute outdoor dining area, so I would definitely suggest getting there on the early side if you want to sit outside. I ordered an iced chai latte and the nutella french toast. Nutella is one of my weaknesses, so this was the perfect breakfast to me! It was so good and filling, I would definitely come back here just for that. The chai latte, while a little on the small side, was also delicious! read more

Came here for brunch on a Sunday around 1:30pm. They have very cute outdoor seating and the indoor area has big doors/windows that are open that keeps it well ventilated in case you are looking for that during this COVID spike. Dranks: Had mimosas - they were yummy, no brunch specials on them that we saw. Nomz: Avocado toast as it came, it was good! In hindsight I should have ordered a side with it, I like avocado but don't LOVE it so it was a lot of avocado to eat when you're not a top 0.1% fan. We got regular fries to share and they must be my fav fries in the city now, sooo good! Not too crunchy or soft, yumm, want them now. My friend got the Buttermilk fried chicken and that is where it is at, it was so tasty! Cooked perfectly, crunchy but not too crunchy - and the flavor was amazing! Will def get that next time. Service: great service! Cherry on top: you can add yourself to the waitlist on yelp! So helpful - just know that it was faster for us that day so our time moved up. Banter is such a cute cafe brunch spot! The menu is simple but great selection to choose from such as eggs & toast, salad & bowls, sandwiches, wraps, and of course sweet sections. Loved the server, I forgot her name but it was great vibes. I ordered Jasmin green tea and the golden folded eggs which come with soft scrambled eggs, cremini mushrooms, bacon, greens salad, avocado with sourdough toast. I'd come back to try something else on the menu as well! read more

Avocado toast was great - I added a poached egg on top and it was cooked to perfection Mushroom toast was also really good. Got Banter big breakfast, which was basically had many elements of breakfast but decomposed into individual pieces. Every piece of the breakfast, was just sitting there, some cheese, a slice of avo, a roasted tomato, some poached egg. It was a bit strange to have everything separated, but I tried combining each aspect of the dish to see what went best together. Everything tasted fine, but nothing was particularly tasty. The poached eggs were very flavorless. This dish seemed like something that would be quite simple for me to make myself. Got a beach cocktail though, which was great! Overall, might come back for the drinks but probably not the food if this is one of the recommended dishes. read more
The food at Banter was amazing! We used the yelp waitlist to get a table and even though it said 30-45 minutes our table was ready within 15 minutes. The staff were all friendly and helped us out with the menu. We were a party of 4 and we all ordered coffee which was very aesthetic as seen in the image below. The mushroom toast was alright, it was just a bit expensive for the portion that you get. The mushroom wrap was really good and probably the most worth item we ordered. The Nutella French toast was amazing and definitely is a must try! All of the food came out pretty quickly as well, within about 15 minutes of us ordering. The ambiance was pretty cool if you sit outside. They have plenty of outdoor seating and some indoor seating. We were inside and it definitely was a little more cramped than the tables outside looked. Overall, we had an amazing experience at Banter! read more
Saw this place in a friend's ex wife's Facebook post and knew she had high standards in food. Walked 15 minutes to get there and had a nice table waiting outside for us to sit at. No reservations though. The place was well appointed with nice decor and on a quiet neighborhood street. Menu was limited but unique with breakfast options. Found out the owner was from Australia and these food items were all influenced from there. While I'm not going to talk about all items I will at that my son and I had the same thing and both are still talking about the marinaded mushrooms. Soft folded eggs were special and and bacon was delicious. Had a little salad for breakfast, wha, wha, what? Great accompaniment. And I even added smoked salmon " lox" to my plate. Oh yea, it was good. Others had the avocado toast on sourdough bread with poached eggs. Minor knock was the eggs were a bit over cooked but since neither Chef Michelle nor Gayle was with us, we ate anyway. Lol. Breakfast sandwiches were huge and on artisanal breads. Very good looking. We waited for the food a bit longer than the waiter though we should have, we didn't notice, and he brought some warm out of the oven banana bread no charge. It was very good even though it had no gluten. Lol. read more

I stopped by for a weekday brunch per a friends' suggestion - we arrived around 11am and there were plenty of seats available, although it quickly filled up and a queue formed while we were eating. There's a nice outdoors seating area - one line of tables along the store, facing out brasserie-style, and another row of structured outdoor dining 'booths' on the other side of the sidewalk. For my meal I ordered the bacon and egg roll, which was fantastic. The ciabatta buns were perfectly fluffy, and all of the ingredients were just so nicely cooked and paired together excellently. I particularly liked the caramelised onions, which were a nice touch and contrasted very nicely with the more savoury flavour profiles of the eggs and bacon. I also had the matcha latte which was delicious and just the right degree of sweetness - with a very pure, strong matcha flavour that wasn't overpowering at all. Would highly recommend! All in all, definitely a great meal, and I would say somewhat less expensive than many other similar restaurants of its style and calibre. I'm definitely planning on coming back again :) read more
