((4.5 stars)) Sunny and Annie's is very much a 24/7 neighborhood gem of a corner store and deli. it's packed with packaged foods--candy, chips, cookies, ice cream, soft drinks, beer, and a lot more plus the deli counter serves ups an endless list of creative sandwiches. i am not going to say this place is cramped but it kinda is. for example, if people stand in the wrong areas of the store, it will cause a complete standstill of a traffic jam in the store. my advice: order from the deli (and stand somewhere people aren't trying to get to) or grab whatever you need, pay, and leave. this place is not a place to linger. keep it moving. anyway, the obvious draw of Sunny & Annie's is the endless list of sandwiches that are handwritten cards that are stuck outside glass of the deli counter. there is literally something for the pickiest eaters--from hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, wraps, and more. some sandwiches are named celebrities, politicians, etc. i have ordered a bunch of different sandwiches and have not made it through much of the menu. you can also create your own Frankenstein monster of a sandwich. while the sandwiches are a big part of the draw, the insane amount of snack foods crammed into the store is quite remarkable from the large stand of Doritos, Takis, Cheetos and other popular branded snack foods in the front to the separate stand of Wise snacks to an entire back corner of the store filled with all kinds of chips, popcorn, etc. imo, Sunny's has the freshest-tasting Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn. i know an insane take consider it's a packaged popcorn snack from a megacorp (PepsiCo), but i'll die on this hill. maybe it's cause Sunny's sells a lot of Smartfood popcorn so it gets refreshed often, maybe they have a secret in/pipelinbe from the factory, or it's just magic/alchemy. i don't know, but the Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn never tastes stale-ish like it does at grocery stores, the bags never feel deflated because they have been on shelf long, and the popcorn never has that soft mouthy feel but still has the crunch to it. maybe it's just me, but Sunny's serves a great list of sandwiches...AND the freshest Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn. beyond the snacks, the service from the deli to cashier is upbeat and friendly. in all seriousness, Sunny and Annie's is an Avenue B institution at this point and remains a charming family-owned store--and is NOT a sterile modern clone of a neighborhood business. read more

This place is pretty cool! It is open 24/7 and has so many sandwiches on its menu. I was on a food tour and this was our last stop. We got the pho #1 sandwich (wrap). This was my favorite stop of the tour. It is a wrap/sandwich with pho ingredients (beef, bean sprouts, onions), tomatoes, hoisin sauce, and avocado. I loved it so much. I was curious about their Bulgogi Sandwiches, so I came by. I went to the counter and asked for a Jackie Chan with bulgogi, and right as I came, there was a whole rush of people. It took about 20 minutes for my sandwich to be ready, and so I walked around the tiny convenience store to kill time. It is very small and packed, especially with many people, but the staff are very hardworking. When getting my sandwich, the staff apologized for the wait, to which it was not her fault that the rush suddenly came! I ate my sandwich on the go, and it was delicious. I love the textures of the bread with the sweeter meat, accompanied by the spice of the kimchi yet herb from the cilantro and creaminess from the avocado. It was a great bite, not too heavy, and I enjoyed it. Maybe the price was a little high ($19), but I'm glad I tried! read more

It's worth trekking out to this joint, as Tik Tok has advised through many influencer videos. The Korean mom/pop shop really knows what they're doing, though I wish there was a bodega cat to share company while I had the quick wait for the sandwich to be assembled. The sandwich did not have anything missing, and despite not having the soup broth, it did not make me miss it. The greens were SO fresh and the meat was so hearty. The sandwich didn't feel heavy at all, and I felt actually good about myself or having enough greens for the day. I'm so intrigued that I wanna try all of the sandwiches on the menu. This unique bodega offers a large menu of asian-inspired deli sandwiches that include bulgogi, for example. The sandwiches are huge too. The owner is Korean and you can feel that cultural influence in the menu. Lots of interesting flavor combination to choose from, with each sandwich hefty with a ton of ingredients. To be quite honest, I've really never been a sandwich guy. I don't know what it is, I would just almost always rather eat other things. I never really just sit and crave a sandwich, you know? I tried the pho 1, as it looked like one of there more popular sandwiches. That sandwich literally changed my life. I was so skeptical as I love pho, but couldn't imagine those ingredients being good not in a broth. Was having a really bad week so I thought I would treat myself to one of my favorite sandwiches, the love shine, at Sunny and Annie's. Why not??! I live right around the corner and go here often. Typically, at a deli counter, you're greeted by the person working who may say something like "hi, what can i get for you?" I was standing behind the counter waiting to be greeted like a normal person. I saw the man working and figured he'd turn around in a minute or so. Then, the male cashier intervened and asked me what I would like to order. I said, "the love shine!" I love Korean food - I ordered the 'What the Pho #4" and I am still drooling :) I've never had this type of sandwich from a regular bodega and I was pleasantly surprised. With Teriyaki grilled chicken, avocado, Chives kimchi, cilantro, spinach, tomato (think this was missing from mine), sesame leaves, mozzarella, fuji apple and red pesto sauce on a roll - it's everything I love about Korean food in sandwich form. The Mona Lisa has a chicken cutlet, basil leaves, mozzarella, balsamic vinegar and red peppers - also a good sandwich! For these two sandwiches it was around $20.12 and both come with a pickle. Not big on sandwiches but this is definitely the place to go to for that sandwich craving! No comment on the service experience since my brother got me it for lunch. He said it's known for sandwiches which is clear with the photos of the colorful and extensive menu. I let him choose and he got me the PHO 1 (apparently there's multiple variations just of the pho sandwiches). I was expecting a baguette but to my surprise it was on a roll. Even with the seemingly small size, I can assure you it's a filling meal as it's adequately PACKED. I split it to two meals - the other half was still delicious hours later. The roast beef would have been dry on its own but the tomatoes, avocado and chili sauce created a perfect balance of flavors. Definitely has that tinge of spice which builds with each bite but not unbearably spicy. And YES it has that pho taste! Is it the bean sprouts? Cilantro? I don't know how but it does taste like I'm having pho but in BREAD form. Would I get another sandwich from here again? Absolutely. I've been visiting for years and it's great to see this place going strong, though it's not at all surprising since their sandwich game is on point. And that's an understatement. One of the best (if not THE best) sandwich places in the city. For a while I had a monogamous relationship with the aptly named P.H.O. #1 sandwich, but now that I've opened up my mind and taste buds to the others, there's no going back. They have an impressive list of delicious, cheekily named sandwiches. This includes politically themed options (Hill-Ump or Joe Bama, anyone?) and 10 billion varieties of the P.H.O., most of which have no resemblance to actual pho besides the original. The ingredients and flavors are unique, and most importantly, they manage to work really well together. You'll spot things on the menu cards like cantaloupe or apple slices, kimchi, bean sprouts, sesame leaves, and red pesto sauce. The best sandwiches are also the messiest; if a sandwich doesn't turn your shirt into a Jackson Pollock painting, it's not worth having. Oh, and Sunny and Annie's is also open 24/7, so you can get legitimately tasty food to satisfy those munchies whenever you damn well please. It's near the Tompkins Square Park dog run, so when it's warm, I recommend sitting and enjoying your sandwich while watching adorable pups frolicking around. I was overwhelmed by the menu and overwhelmed by the woman working the cash register who gave us 0 time to decide on what we wanted. She kept on asking every minute if we've made up our minds. Eventually we just ordered because she was so insistent. Not everyone who comes here is a frequent flyer so my only advice is to give the customers some space and time... I ended up getting the Pho 1, but they apparently have many other pho sandwich options. I can't even tell you what ingredients were in them because I felt really stressed when browsing the menu while being adamantly pushed to order. My friend got the cheesesteak.
