I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food was. -The bla&t ($15) sandwich came with smoked bacon, lettuce, avocado, tamo, basil mayo, and best of all, levain bread. It was the perfect combination, and I enjoyed every bite. -The crisp panko chicken ($15) sandwich came with tomato, avocado arugula, sriracha mayo, hot honey, pickles, and a toasted brioche bun. I was looking for a cafe in the University City area and heard great things about Banyan Kitchen and Cafe. My expectations were high and they were met with flying colors. Firstly the design of the space is beautiful. It is located on the ground floor of a shared office space. Natural light pours in from floor to ceiling windows and there are booth and table seating options. My wife and I settled into a booth and were quickly helped by the manager who gave us cups and an ice water pitcher. This was a really nice touch. I loved the crispy breaded chicken - the chicken was juicy and flavorful and the breading was perfectly done. It definitely tasted fresh and home made. The BLAT was vibrant had excellent balance. We were getting our cars serviced and looking for a quick breakfast. This place is inside an office building and it's really beautiful -- lots of natural light, big windows, plants. There are lots of tables for sitting including long tables for groups. This would be a great place to grab a latte and a baked good and sit and study or work. I've been here twice to study, and honestly, I am obsessed with how quiet and spacious this place is. The layout, decorations, and cleanliness are superb! They open at 8 AM-3 PM, and they offer food, chocolates, pastries, and drinks. I ordered grilled salmon sandwich and for $13+, I thought it was wayy too simple. The sandwich only had 1 leaf of lettuce and salmon. I also ordered Vietnamese coffee both times, and honestly, I was disappointed with how inconsistent my drink was. The first time, a male barista made my drink. The flavor was strong, mildly sweet, and overall delicious. It was also over ice. The second time, a female barista prepared my drink. It was hot with only 1/4 of the cup filled. It also tasted very, very different, and the color was darker. She later then told me how I was supposed to stir the cream at the bottom of the cup. However, even with me stirring it, it tasted the same and the color was the same. What confuses me more was when she said she couldn't make it on ice when my initial order was on ice. I declined her offer on remaking it since she sounded very determine that what I had ordered is correct, resulting in the same outcome. Overall, I prefer the first version better than the second one. The first one tasted more like how a Vietnamese coffee should taste like in my opinion. Overall, the staffs were nice and attentive. The space is great for studying. Tables have plugs along the wall. I had my first experience with Banyan Kitchen & Café through my work's lunch program, and I ordered the BLT&A sandwich (bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado). The portion size was generous, and the flavors were fantastic. My only critique would be that the crust of the bread was a bit too tough, making it hard to eat. I also think it would be amazing if the sandwich came with a serrano aioli sauce--one of my other favorite cafes serves a similar sandwich with that sauce, and it really elevates the whole dish. They were both watered down. The matcha was very weak in flavor and didn't taste like true authentic Japanese matcha. The mocha tasted like a watery dark chocolate drink. After sharing my concerns, they offered to remake the drink with more chocolate this time and she made it a smaller size. The drink was SO sweet that I only took a few sips and had to toss it out. Ambiance & parking 5/5 The place is aesthetically pleasing and quiet so it's perfect if you wanna get some work done. They also validate the parking which was nice. Price 4/5 Overall prices are fair. A nice little café that's connected to a chocolate and coffee place located in what seems to be an artsy district of San Diego. The food was tasty and the presentation was beautiful. I ordered the special that was available that day. Which was coconut chicken and waffles. The chicken had a nice crisp and it reminded me of that coconut shrimp appetizer you get at a lot of Asian fusion places. Even the maple syrup had a little bit of spice in it which reminds me of the dip that comes with that appetizer (sweet and spicy). The waffles were solid and the fruit was fresh. It was tasty and was a fan. I ordered a double espresso Vietnamese coffee which is basically a double espresso with condensed milk most likely. A group of friends and I attended an event at Liberty Station the night before. When we woke up we were looking for a place for breakfast to take a small group of people took reservations because we didn't want to wait over an hour. The eggs on top of my avocado toast were light, fluffy and well cooked. I snuck some smoked salmon on a few bites of my toast and it was yummy!! The breakfast potatoes were delicately flavored and cooked to perfection. We really enjoyed sharing them. My nephew didn't like the actual maple syrup (yum) that came with the waffles so they actually tried to find some of the crappy fake stuff and brought us some dipping chocolate instead. Needless to say we took care of the waffles. We sat inside on some couches with a low table because that was all that was available when we arrived. The staff was attentive and helped us move to a proper table once one was available. I will definitely be back to enjoy this establishment. I've been wanting to come to this place for a very long time but I haven't been able to because of their hours not working with school/work. But I finally got the chance to come and I love it here!
