This place is great. I started going to Bar 101 about three years ago when my friends and I started a sand volleyball team. Since then, I've been up there at least once a week for volleyball and we generally wind up there on Saturday nights as well. The staff is awesome, they're all very friendly and they they treat their regulars very well. Yes, they have a dress code which is generally aimed at keeping gang members out, it's not a high end dress code - no athletic shorts at night and no plain white tees, sleeveless shirts, or hoodies... that type of thing. The code gets enforced for regulars and first timers alike. I saw a Yelp review where the reviewer stated he thought he was singled out on dress code enforcement for being asian. I highly doubt that is the case, if there is one bar in St. Louis that is accepting of everyone, it's Bar 101. The food is excellent considering it's a typical bar food menu. The french fries are breaded and my very well be the best fries in St. Louis. They have unique items like frog legs and alligator, and they have $.29 shrimp and wings which always hit the spot. If you're looking for a healthier option, I get the grilled chicken salad a lot, which never disappoints. And the dynamite sticks are amazing. Bar 101 easily has the best sand volleyball courts in St. Louis. Volleyball up there is a blast and league night has pretty much become my favorite day of the week. read more

VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS - BE CAREFUL PLAYING HERE. UNSAFE AND HATEFUL. I have played in leagues and the weekend night tournaments here for years. We stopped playing leagues here this year due to it being extremely disorganized and poor communication. Last night, I played in a tournament and made it to the final game of the night. The team we were playing had belligerently drunk men, and they had friends watching and egging them on. They threw sand in my friend's face from right across the net, came on our side of the net to get in our faces and try to provoke physical fights, and yelled homophobic slurs at my friend. The guy directly across the net from me said he was going to "come over and kick our teeth in". The guy running the tournament was sitting right next to the court and watched all of this happen and did not intervene. It continued to escalate and I was afraid for my safety. I did not feel safe having a large group of drunk men threatening violence and yelling hate speech. Security was incredibly kind and seemed no nonsense, but he was not in view of the court so I don't believe he saw what was happening. He walked me to my car after the game because I was afraid of the men we played as they had already tried to get physical and made so many threats during our game. A little banter is normal when drinking and playing is involved, but this was so obviously past that. Hateful, violent, and homophobic activity is not something I've experienced at a tournament like this and I have been playing in them across the area for about 7 years, and this was incredibly upsetting. I think we all got incredibly lucky that no one got hurt and the cops did not have to be called. read more

Sand volleyball! Yeah, they have a game room bar and a little nightclub inside that reminds of a frat house basement, but this hangout is about (IMO) the sand volleyball outside. They even have a large sound system outside to try and keep the energy up. They have teams and leagues, but I have only been there a few times. The place just is too... So if I was to try to relive a little (StL style- on asphalt) college spring break type action... I might go back to this place. Remember the movie Old School?... Plus they do not have Petron or Grand Ma and the shots are in those little plastic cups! Overall though if I was in the mood I still have to give it A-OK. They make ladies use porta potties instead of the actual bathrooms. And when asked to use the actual bathroom they kick you out of the bar. Would not recommend if you actually want to enjoy an evening. And if you want to play sand volleyball, stl sandbar is definitely the move. read more

Fun refs, terrible coordination for the volleyball league. Had four games cancelled due to no shows (out of 8) - understand that it's not their fault if a team no shows yet it feels like they're in it to get teams to sign up and get the dues and then it's on your own. What's even more annoying? Everyone makes the playoffs - tonight it was *double* elimination (according to multiple refs) End result? Us waiting 3 hours, buying multiple pitchers only to be told that we had no more games. And no, we weren't the only ones. No management presence, no announcements to the rest of the crowd. End result? You're welcome Bar 101 for the donation - you got us this time. Won't happen again. I just feel bad for the teams who are still there waiting for their turn. If you're looking for a fun atmosphere go elsewhere (i.e. WAVE TACO). Better atmosphere, better bar, better staff. read more

Loved the atmosphere. The patio and volleyball courts are beautiful with a full service bar and menu. They offer alittle something for everyone, two different DJ's ( one outside and one in), games inside and courts out, dance floors by both DJ's, tables everywhere and shuttles to all the games. I cant wait to come back next weekend with my girls:) read more

Oh why oh why did I go here? Oh yeah, it was late Saturday night (or maybe Sunday morning?). I had spent most of the evening out with some friends and we were feeling daring! A friend was at Bar101 and he invited us to join...and so we did. First off, why is this place called Bar101? It remind me of college and taking a class. Where is this place? I live in Soulard and I was told it wasn't too far from my place...well we drove around looking for it for a good 3 minutes! It was awful! Why couldn't we find it? I was ready to give up, but I NEVER give up! Finally, a sign! We saw a sign! Actually, my friend saw the sign. I just drove where she told me to go. Once in the parking lot we noticed a line?!?! A line to get into a bar? And a cover charge?!?! Really? I hardly ever pay a cover when I go out. Clearly I go to better bars, but I was willing to give this a try. We went inside. Grabbed a drink. Danced a few dances. Enjoyed conversation and darts....before I knew it the car was closing? Wow! I guess it was a fun night. Will I go back? Maybe. Maybe not. read more

been playing beach volleyball for a couple seasons and have generally enjoyed the place, but some of the new owners rules seem overly stringent. We are not allowed to bring water, on the sand even though we've played games in extremely hot temperatures. And some of the courts don't even have scoreboards!! This place is much more attractive to me in the summer than the winter. Indoors gets smokey and crowded late. When the patio is open, there is much more space available and the smoke doesn't pose a major problem. Also, there is a large bar outside so there is plenty of room to belly-up and order a few. read more

We stumbled upon this place when we were trying to find a fun place with a sand volleyball league. I have to say that Bar 101 was an excellent choice. Besides checking in here getting me the prestigious honor of "Baron of Kosciusko" I've also had a lot of fun here. It is pretty slow on weekday nights with mostly volleyball players hanging out before and after games. But there are enough teams and players to keep it from being dead. The staff is always super fast and nice. The outside area is what really makes this a cool place. They have an outside bar, a couple of decks, a ton of places to sit, and of course two sand volleyball courts. The courts are good and so are the refs. They are usually running drink specials on weekday nights too, and I've never had to pay more than $2 bucks for a beer. I really can't speak to how this place is on a weekend night or their food. But they do a good job of running the volleyball league and have cheap drinks. I don't know how it compares to the other sand volleyball bars in the area, but you can't go wrong here. My only real complaint is that the league was kinda disorganized before the season started, sometimes they are slow at filling the water jug, and the place can be hard to find at first. But this is a great sand volleyball bar that everyone should check out. read more

I have frequented Bar 101 this summer because I participate in the Team St. Louis (TSL) summer volleyball league, which is held every Tues. night at Bar 101. I like the outdoor set up - esp. when we have all day tourneys. There is a nice 'summer' ambiance to the outside for both spectators and players. Their drink prices seem very reasonable. I have only sampled a small portion of the menu so cannot speak much as far as their food quality is concerned. The sand courts are decent - although some of them can get a little deep and hard to maneuver in. They are well lit in the evenings and warm & sunny during the day as long as weather permits. They also have a small wash/mist station just off the courts to hose off all that excess sand, which is nice. They are a little particular with their rules - some understandable where others are not. The only beef I really have at this point is the lack of security in the parking lot. One Tuesday evening - we had a total of six break ins across the league, which is senseless. I will give them credit for placing monitors off the top deck overlooking the lot. Regardless - this is where my team and I play every Tuesday in the summer. It's a fun spot and great place to hang outside with friends while gettin' sandy! read more

Talk about another dump in St. Louis that people actually really like to hit up to get trashed. You want to meet some real trashy people. Come here. They apparently have a strict dress code and made me take my hoody off. So I drop my hoody off in the car and roll in with jeans, t-shirt and sandals. Ridiculous. You don't want hoodies but you'll let me in with sandals?? If you're not gonna let hoodies in, why are you letting people in with backwards hats? Come on. Dress code my @ss. It's cuz I'm the only asian guy in there. If you roll in here with a dress shirt, you are way over dressed. And girls who wear dresses to this place, don't bother, you'll stand out like red on white. The bartender called us assholes for tipping on cheap alcohol when we ordered crown. We ordered 4 Vegas bombs. The bartender poured in well whiskey and we asked what was in a Vegas bomb. She said "CROWN, peach schnapps, and red bull. We go well that wasn't crown, and tipped a buck a drink. She goes, and I quote " that's because people tip like assholes." I've never seen someone cuss out a customer after the bar has tried to be cheap on a customer. read more

I found this place when a friend told me about it and that they free shuttle you to all the sports games in town. Parked here for free, had some great food and a couple of drinks then they drove us to the Cardinals game for free! I probably saved $30-40 by doing it this way instead of paying for parking and paying the obscene prices for the food and drinks at the ballpark! Thats a winner for me! Besides the savings this place is huge for a bar. So much to do here- Drink, volleyball, darts, basketball, punching bag, touch screen, karaoke, dance, golden tee, chill, eat(pizza is amazing!) and a couple of tv's. You can be inside in the a/c or outside in the elements. Talk about best of both worlds! If you have not been there yet I definitely recommend it. Great overall atmosphere. read more

As a general manager of a restaraunt when I close my restaurant/ bar usually at 12 ish me and my friends and emplooyees need a three o'clock bar to go to. Bar 101 is where we frequented on almost a nightly basis. We were on a first name basis with several of the bartenders, bouncers and even the owners wife. Lets just say we went their quite a bit. So last evening after a softball game I suggested to some people we should all meet there due to there large patio and we were all in softball clothes. I never in a million years thought it would be a problem considering it is a bar with numerous sand volleyball courts! Well much to my surprise when we arrived I was told on Fridays and Saturdays their is a dress code and because I was wearing athletic shorts I wasn't allowed in. Their also is no signs advising of the dress code. The bouncer and the officer at the front door even advised the manager who told me about the dress code of the frequency that me my friends and my employees come in. I will not go back. Evidently regular business is not good business at Bar 101! read more

Don't be fooled by all the staff reviews. This place is in the ghetto of the soulard fringe. The DJ thinks he is sweet or something and plays nothing but like belbivdavo (spelling) and super crappy 80s bad stuff and I was a youngin in the 80s so there is some love there. But this dude thinks he is sweet and the cuts are so whack it's incredible haha. Makers at the bar isn't makers - I can tell you that for sure so you might as well order jimmy beam cuz that is what you will get anyways and it will be cheaper. The whole vibe is garbage. This place is a joke. Never played volleyball here but hopefully their sand isn't quick because their entire style is so played out. Two tips - fire the DJ and put real liquor in your bottles that match the label. Location is whatever - nothing you can do about that but currently I am listening to spice girls here because it was the last bat on the charity pub crawl we are on. Nuff said. read more

A truly awful experience. I went to Bar 101 with a bunch of friends thinking that it would be a great place to hang out late night on a weekend. It was not. Even though it was not crowded, it took forever to get a drink, which was way overpriced for the neighborhood. There was also this smell, like mold in a basement in there. It seemed like everybody else in the place was just too drunk to notice. There are so many other decent choices for bars in St. Louis, go to any of them instead. read more

Great place to hang out. The largest patio in st. louis with sand volleyball! Summertime doesnt get much better than this. They have a great menu for lunch and dinner also. Especially the buffalo chicken pizza. Just a great place to hang out and watch the game. read more
