Shrewsbury Lanes is awesome! The staff is always super helpful, the bar has some pretty decent options as far as drinks go (and jello shots IYKYK). They have an all you can bowl deal on Sundays which is great and we also joined a league there. This isn't one of those bowling alleys with a clubby vibe or anything super fancy. It's a down home alley like you grew up in. I noticed they upgraded the bathroom stalls to ones with a bit more room last year which I appreciate. You can get jalapeño poppers, STL style pizza, chicken fingers, cookies and all kinds of other food at their snack bar too. Also, despite it being a bowling alley that has been around for quite some time, it doesn't smell like smoke inside which is a huge plus to me! Very clean lanes and friendly staff. I Judge a lot of bowling alleys by the cleanliness of their restrooms, and these were clean. The price is a bit high but nothing crazy. Now as far as the lanes, I'm not a huge fan of artificial lines. So I can't say I will be back for serious practice, but beers with buddies and that kind of play for sure. Been coming here since I was a kid, 25+ years. It's weird that it doesn't smell of smoke in there & it's not a big cloud of it...but it's for the best. Cheap food, beer, & bowling. This, along with Epiphany Lanes are my go-to spots. They have good specials too so that's a huge plus. If you haven't been, this is one of those good vintage-vibe bowling alleys. Shrewsbury Lanes is a sleepy bowling alley tucked away off the River Des Peres. Due to its obscurity, there's no shortage of parking and no excess of teenagers. Of all the cinder-block box's contents, the TV sets and the prices are the only significant updates since 1990. (The former are either wedged between the overhead score-monitors and scrolling through local advertisements for novelties such as hand-fed parrots or are mounted behind bowlers displaying muted sports channels to no one in particular. The latter are slightly below the prevailing market rate.) This obsolescence is mostly charming in the way that time capsules tend to be. Like them, Shrewsbury Lanes is well-preserved and clean inside. The ball returns and pin-setters function as regularly as when they came off the assembly line. The computers, though they look to have been reclaimed from Apollo 11's mission control, still accept input from the keypads with proper pressure. The decor and molded fiberglass furnishings still bear the 70s influence. The bathrooms know nothing of touchless flushing or faucets. Lanes 22-24, at least, are slick, smooth, and free of aggravating warps. There are no ashtrays because there is no smoking anywhere on the premises. As to the main event: I bowled a couple games during Ladies' Night, which promises unlimited bowling, shoe rental, and drink specials from 6-10P. House rules are egalitarian and allow males and females alike to partake of the limitless leisure sport and $1 well drinks and AB-InBev drafts. Both beverage types come in cute, diminutive glasses likely chosen to mitigate the house's losses. Other losses are discouraged by the barkeep herself. When I observed to the bartender/co-owner that the scotch in my scotch and soda amounted to less than an ounce, I was reminded "They are a dollar, sir." Indeed they are. The bowling was as bowling is with friends, a good enough time regardless of pin-count. Thanks to the relatively sparse occupancy, we were able to revel without drawing the ire of neighbors and breaking any rules of bowling etiquette. We claimed a third lane and tore through the frames at a quicker clip. The staff had absorbed the atmosphere's torpor but was nonetheless attentive. They timely fetched derelict balls and promptly provided assistance navigating the pre-DOS operating system. They generously globed molten cheese onto a cardboard tray of fries. On the whole, while not given to smiling, employees never frowned or glared. One should expect nothing more. read more

Pre-review note: Shrewsbury Lanes went into receivership back in summer 2013 and was purchased by new owners who shut it down, renovated, and re-opened around Thanksgiving 2013. The "new" Shrewsbury Lanes is non-smoking, has a redone bar & kitchen, and is freshly painted. Don't worry though, they've still got the same lanes, same scoring machines, same bathrooms, and same carpeted walls as before. This ownership transition explains some of different pricing & policies referred to by reviews before vs. after 11/2013. On to my review... Shrewsbury Lanes is a decent bowling alley with a few flaws keeping them from being one of those great classics that anchors the neighborhood for 50 years. Good: - Staff was friendly. They all seemed a bit rushed since the place was pretty busy, but customer service was still there. - Renovated bar is bright and non-smoking - Local craft beer on tap (UCBC, Schlafly, O'Fallon) - $7 Bud Light pitchers. Works out to $1.75/glass. - You can bowl here. That is really the point, right? Bad: - One of the scoring machines at our lanes had a broken screen. The employee had to put our names in for us because he had the keypress steps memorized. - Craft beer pitchers are 2x the price of macro, at $14/per - They're a little short on chairs. An employee had to go find a table & chairs for our lane since another lane stole ours. They had a couple lanes out of commission, and were those lanes active (& full) there is no way they have enough seats to go around. This was true in the bar as well. - Ball selection is thin. Lots of chipped balls from Du Bowl and very few light balls. It's super close to home so we'll probably be back. Not shelling out $14 again for that craft pitcher, though. read more

Oh this poor little bowling alley. I feel like it is so forgotten. This largely has to do with the location I imagine. This place is buried (and I mean BURIED) behind the Shop n Save and Ashley Furniture Outlet on Watson Rd. and sandwiched in by the train tracks that run behind there. People use this road as a cut through, not as a true place to go out. I feel like the bowling alley suffers because of this unfortunate location. However, this place is still somewhat bustling amazingly enough. It's not quite as packed as other bowling alleys I have been too, but in many ways, that is very good. That is very very good if you are hoping to get a lane without reserving one. Also, the place is very old and kind of dingy, but it's not as smoky as many bowling alleys in the area. That is largely due to their lack of population I imagine. On Thursday nights you can get a bucket of 6 beers for only $12, which is awesome. They have a huge assortment of balls to choose from, and you can even get bumpers if you call ahead and reserve them. (OK, it's embarassing that I know that, oh well.) Shrewsbury Lanes is the scrappy little bowling alley that keeps on kicking. It's very Big Labowski, if you catch my drift. No glory, but wow, the ones that know about it are quite loyal to their bowling alley. read more

I came here with friends on a Friday night, and we had no problem getting a few lanes and bowling our little hearts out. And the games and shoes are CHEAP! I couldn't believe that it was so empty on a Friday night. Well...yes, I could. Like I said before, it's a little run down. I personally loved how antiquated it is and how old school it feels. you walk in and think, "this is a legit bowling alley." it's definitely one of the better bowling alleys I've been to, by far, in stl. the alleys are smooth and slick, the workers there are accommodating and friendly, and while we were there, no music was playing so we were able converse with our friends. overall, we had a great and fun experience! read more

This place is a great, budget-friendly, low-key bowling alley of the kind I remember going to as a kid. Nothing flashy, not stylish, just the basics. They've got several lanes, a small bar and snack bar area, video game arcade, juke box, dart board, and a pool table. The pool table is quarter-operated, a dollar a game. That's a deal! This is one of the more affordable bowling alleys around. The staff were friendly as soon as we got there. The place seemed clean. The bathrooms were clean. I think they sometimes have technical difficulties with the score boards and the lanes though. Our pins got stuck once, I saw the guy helping out another group of bowlers with the same problem once. Our scoreboard quit working after one of our games so they switched us to a different lane. I mean, it was nothing big and the staff were right on top of it and friendly. I went here with a groupon and had zero problems with it. We got a pizza and a pitcher of budweiser. The pizza was pretty lousy - had to ask for a dipping cup of wing sauce for it - I wouldn't go there for the food. The staff almost overcharged us when we were leaving, but we just reminded them we had given them a groupon when we came in, and they corrected it immediately. I'd go back for sure. It's not nearly as crowded or pricey as Tropicana, Pin-Up, or Moolah. Sure, it probably lacks some of the nicer aspects those lanes have, but it's a fun place to chill and just bowl or shoot pool. read more

For relatively new owners of a classic house, Shrewsbury Lanes is a gem. Another reviewer on this record had it right that the facility was headed for the auction block until the white knight new owners jumped in. The ceiling tile have a multi-colored patina from being in place so long, the lanes are not in the absolute greatest shape, but they are more than adequate for leisure and league bowlers. The Brunswick pinsetting and ball return equipment is original, without all that distracting neon colored paint decoration. Its visually very retro, all the way back to the 1960's when the place was undoubtedly in its heyday. The electronic scoring equipment is also vintage, Brunswick 2000 scoring consoles with monochrome VGA CRT displays. We were there for High School tournament play. The whole look and feel of the pace takes me back and displays a great deal of character. read more

This is a cool little bowling alley. We live close and decided to take our grandkids there. It was during a weekday while they were on Spring Break, so there were only a couple other people in the place. There was only one employee at the time, which I assume may be the owner. He was very helpful and accommodating. Nice guy. The food was what you would expect for bowling alley food. It was a good lunch and the food prices were reasonable. The only thing we did not expect ere the prices for shoe rental and bowling. Granted, I haven't been bowling in a while but based on the reviews we were expecting it to be much cheaper. At $3 per game and $3 per pair of shoes, we racked up a $70 bill for a few games of bowling and lunch. That being said, the grandkids had a great time and so did we. We would go back, but now we know that it isn't as cheap as people stated. It is probably because they have also made updates with the scoring system since the last reviews we saw posted. And we had no issues with the ball return, so maybe that has been updated as well. (Some previous reviews mentioned that as a problem). They do still have the eclectic charm in the retro decor and I hope they do not update that! read more

Well we actually bowled so I guess one star is in order. We bought a groupon for two people to play 4 games, a pizza, and a pitcher. We forwent the pizza and played one more game. We go to pay and its over $20! I checked their prices, and as best I can tell after a not so nice phone conversation with a less than helpful or professional teenager at the counter, figured out tthat they charged us again for shoes, and ripped us off two games on the groupon. Explaining it was for 4 games total. Gee thanks. Do not buy the groupon! Would've had a better time, better service, and honest pricing at good ole' Saratoga Lanes. Lesson learned. Antiquated bowling alley. They have auto scoring, but I think the machines date back to the very first ones ever invented. You can bowl a good score on the lanes if you are used to old school bowling. The snack bar has really good food. You can go here and have a blast with friends/family because you do not feel overwhelmed by the atmosphere like at some other bowling alleys. Pretty much anything goes here. The food is disgusting and the employees are extremely incompetent. Many of the monitors do not work and there are only a few quality bowling balls to choose from. Not a modern facility, a little dingy, bad ball selection (not many and most aren't labeled by weight), and the parking lot is chuck full of giant potholes, but they offer cheap bowling and they have a cheap (cash only) snack bar, cheap beer and pool, and if you are a BYOBer (Ball), you should be good to go. read more

Went here for the first time on a Thursday night after scouting out other bowling alleys to have an adult party at. Customer service was great, the workers are happy fun people. Cheap to bowl and even cheaper to drink! Had some minor problems with a lane but when we brought it to their attention we were taken care of right away and moved to another lane.
