I am always looking for new places with all natural or organic meat. I was so excited to try Bar basic after reading about the care they put into sourcing their meat. The fried chicken burger was so juicy and crispy. I swear it was one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I ever had. The mac and cheese was very cheesy and the wings had the perfect spice. I didn't love the tacos, they were just decent bar tacos. Definitely a new place worth checking out and please get the fried chicken burger!! read more

Stopped by here for a light bite and happy hour drink one evening while waiting to meet up with someone. It has a very convenient location right on 7th Ave. The first thing I noticed coming in was a sort of homey feeling and ambiance aided by the rough wood features and abundance of plants in the space. The selection on the happy hour menu was fine including a few simple cocktails such as the Mai Tai, as well as beer and wine. The prices were on par with any other nice city bar happy hour. I grabbed a beer but the draft selection was nothing too impressive or varied. Feeling hungry I decided to take a taco because it was something small and it was on the HH menu. Not thinking too much, I went for my favorite which is al pastor and was certainly excited to see that they did it with pineapple here. Ultimately, the pineapple would be just one of the major downfalls to the taco. The fruit was so overwhelmingly sweet it tasted like candy and the meat was absolutely not prepared in the al pastor style but rather something akin to a stewed or pulled pork. The savory parts of the taco were good but the rest was a let down. A perfectly adequate spot worth stopping for a basic HH drink. read more

The food and drinks are great. 4 stars alone for that. We especially love the nachos which basically are a meal in itself. However, the service is extremely slow, disorganized, and not particularly friendly. We waited over 45 minutes just for our drinks with not so much as an acknowledgment of the delay. It took even longer for the kids meals to come out, and even longer to get the kids' drinks, which they had forgotten. I understand things get busy and backed up, but sounds like they need to increase kitchen, bar and server staffing. read more

Man I wish it was good, but sadly, it's faaaaaar from it. I've eaten here twice - both times the food was very subpar. On my first visit, one of the staff members got into a screaming fight with a customer. I've worked in restaurants and patronized plenty, but never in my life have I seen something like that. The man - a bartender or server I wasn't sure - called the customer names and threatened to hit him. It was so over the line and inappropriate. And I get it, customers can be a pain but...to threaten physical violence? Over a dinner order? Pretty inexcusable in my book. So that put a very sour taste in my mouth but everyone deserves a second chance so... The second visit was the one that clinched the deal for me. Not only was the food awful - soggy elote, dry tasteless tacos, bland appetizers - but the drinks were bad! It's pretty hard to screw up a cocktail but they did. I ordered a Paloma - very bitter, watery and full of pulp. So yeah, I won't be back here ever. If you're hungry and need kind, quick service, the Chinese place next door is lovely. read more

Bar Basic is a neighborhood gem. I hosted my thirtieth birthday party on a Saturday night and they were so easy to communicate with (thanks Mike!) and very accommodating. I think we had way more people show up than anticipated and Bar Basic handled the crowd with grace. Drinks and food were delicious-especially loved the guacamole. So I'll give this place 4 stars because they are new. Very friendly and attentive staff. Homey decor. We ordered and got our mac and cheese poppers in about 10 minutes. But as soon as we started to eat them, our food came out. Every restaurant knows to wait for apps to be done before serving the main meal (or should.) our meal was great, but chicken and waffles came with half a waffle and a HUGE salad. Instead of salad, just do the whole waffle ! Also got the chicken sandwich which was great. Really stacked that it was too big to bite, I'd suggest- less chicken, less salad, lessen price, and a rectangular plate to make it look better ! Last, the waiter brought us the bill the SECOND we finished our last bite. It's a charming place. I didn't get a chance to try the cocktails or coffee, but the general tso-style wings were divine. Crispy, sticky, and just a hint of spicy like GTC is meant to be. I also tried the pesto cauliflower, which was quite a large portion. It could easily feed 2-3 people as an appetizer. My main criticism was I wish they were roasted rather than sauteed; cauliflower texture is less pleasant when wet. The restaurant is positively plastered with Miyazaki art and other general nerdery. Cool new burger joint in Park Slope. The highlights - chill vibe, cool tables, interesting "plates" (serving tools are cool). Food - mixed thoughts... I do give them big props for having a salad that is both good and decent sized (not some small serving of bird feed). Fries were tasty but huge - almost ridiculously though (unless shared, impractical to eat). The prickly pear lemonade was delicious and refreshing. But the main question - how was the burger... I have to answer with meh... The gnarly burger sounded good, but in reality the meat patty seemed pretty small, way too many juices running all over, and overall feel was just weird. I ended up eating it with a fork. Not ideal for a burger. I'd rate their burger way better than Bare Burger (I;m sorry to say but Bare Burger burgers taste like cardboard with no fat or flavor), but way short of classic diner burger with a juicy patty and gooey cheese and solid buns. So 3 stars overall. 3 stars for burger, plus one for salad and lemonade. Less one star for prices Also, I did find pricing a bit high for what you get, even in Park Slope. I wanted to give this place 3 stars, but since it's new I figured I'd cut it some slack. My boyfriend and I were looking for a place where we could get beer and burgers, and we assumed this place was going to have some sort of alcohol given the name. However, this restaurant is dry, but that's on us! The overall decor theme is... confusing. It's literally a jumble of all the hip decorative items from the past 5 years, like someone bought everything that Etsy had available and slapped it on the walls and ceilings. Our waiter was a little awkward, but really nice. However, he did not bring us a new bottle of water until we were asking for the check. The water bottle is TINY, so we finished it probably before our food came out. I definitely would've appreciated him getting us another bottle a lot earlier. We ordered a peach smoothie, onion rings, angry birds wings, and two gnarly burgers. The smoothie took a long time to come out so I was initially worried that our food would take a long time too, but it came out pretty soon after the smoothie. The peach smoothie was definitely not worth ~ $6. It was literally peach juice/puree mixed with crushed ice. I hate wasting food, but I only finished half of it because it was such a waste of calories. The onion rings and wings were both really good. The burger was also good, but we both felt that it wasn't filling at all. It also didn't come with fries, so if we hadn't gotten the onion rings and wings we definitely would've been hungry later in the evening. I was assaulted, unprovoked, by an employee of this restaurant, in the restaurant. The employee continued to verbally harass me and invite me "outside to fight" while I spoke to the owner about the inappropriate behavior. The owner refused to take any action, while the employee continued to try to start a fight and calling me a "f***ing p***y". The restaurant treated me as though the situation was my fault. (All we were doing was asking to have an incorrect charge on our bill corrected.) The food was pretty good (though there is better nearby) but I've never had an experience this negative at a restaurant, and the way it was handled by management was completely insufficient. read more

Great place for lunch. I would recommend making a reservation for a larger party. We arrived on a holiday Monday right around opening and easily got a table, but the place was full by the time we left. We enjoyed a breakfast burrito and a fried chicken sandwich (absolutely delicious, really satisfying). All of the food looked and smelled great, and prices were fair. This place is very "me" - the cute, quirky decor, the menu, everything. My mom and I came in for brunch Mother's Day weekend. She had the eggs Benedict and iced coffee, and I had the kitchen sink fries with a Bloody Mary. We both loved the food! My mom said several times after we left how much she loved her dish, and she only says this if it really impressed her There was an abundance of topping on the fries which Is important to me, and the seasoning on the pulled pork wasn't too sweet. My mom appreciated they give you two different Benedict's, one with the same pulled pork and one with veggies and mushrooms. It was a warm day so they had the wall where we were seated open to the street. Beautiful! I was honestly surprised it wasn't busier, we were seated right away on a Saturday. Toast is in quotations because what it is is two slices of Peppridge farm white bread with unseasoned scrambled eggs on top. Delivered by a server who never once came back to ask if I would like salt, pepper or hot sauce. All of which were needed to provide ANY flavor to this, again SIXTEEN dollar dish. The burger was just as tasteless as my eggs. Served on a bun that couldn't handle the amount of sauce and resulted in quite a mess. After finishing and waiting another 10 minutes I went inside to request a check. The atmosphere is laid-back, cozy, colorful, and cool with fun details (like tiny mason jar salt and pepper shakers, and a crystal chandelier in the doorway). We were greeted immediately by the server, who was attentive and efficient. I ordered a caffe americano which was served with a small side of steamed milk...wonderful. For my meal I chose the spinach and mushoom omelette, which was all that you would want in omelette (fluffy and packed with goodness), but I think the deliciously seasoned potato hash stole the show. My friend had the spicy tuna melt, and she was pleased with that as well. The jambalaya and gumbo are not available during brunch/lunch time, so I would be interested in returning one evening to try those. The pricing of items might be a little steep, as $20 for a Po' Boy seems a bit much, but this New York after all. read more

Come here to celebrate new year eve with a group of my friends. We ended up here because the original bar we want to go is close today. This place is absolute hidden gem in the park slope. It's very clean and well decorated. On holiday you can barely get a seat because nothing beats a place with tasty food and great quality, clean environment. More importantly great vibe. Their guacamole and chips are probably the BEST corn tortillas in NYC, it is prepared fresh and hot, yes the corn tortillas is still hot when they served you. The taco is to die for! Every single bite, start to finish was mouth watering and delicious. We barely had seconds to take pictures before finishing the entire plate, lol. The spicy salsa and sauce were incredible. The chicken fijitas were phenomenal. The staff is so sweet and the spicy hibiscus margarita is unbelievably amazing!!! OMG, it was all so perfect. Had a really enjoyable brunch here yesterday. I had their delicious twist on eggs Benedict with pulled pork and portobello mushroom and really enjoyed it. Accompanied it by a very tasty lightly spiced Bloody Mary. Others at the table got the avocado scrambled egg toast with a salad and the avocado BLT with fries and to drink had the apple cider mimosa and a spicy margarita. We shared the fudge brownie with ice cream dessert which lived up to expectations and nicely ended the meal. We all enjoyed. Service was consistently good throughout the meal. Pricing was reasonable. Reasons why I will never order from this establishment ever again: I placed a seamless order for soup at 10:29am, and the eta continued to change from 11 to 11:30 then 12:09...12:45...... The driver went to the wrong borough despite my address being clearly stated on the order. The driver called me multiple times, shouting about not being able to get in (because he did not realize he was at the wrong address in the wrong borough). Gnarly soup didn't bother to answer my multiple calls for help/assistance - one went straight to voicemail. We just wandered in for their "soft opening" and had some of the best burgers and fries we have had in New York. I had the basic burger (no bun) and the fries. He had the country fried chicken burger (recommended by our waiter) with the Mac and cheese hush puppies. Everything was cooked perfectly and seasoned properly. And we had the prickly pear lemonade to sip on, and it was a perfect pairing to the spicy mayo for the fries. Definitely will be back. The have gluten free labeling on their menu and can accommodate most burgers to become gluten free (via sans bun). We sat at the bar on great solid stools with a beautiful wood bar top. So great. Just went into the restaurant tonight and had a truly "basic" burger. The quality and grill of the burger was disgusting. I pulled the burger out and didn't eat it.
