I don't understand how the reviews here are so high... I have lived in the neighborhood for 3 years and pass this restaurant every day. I've always wanted to stop in because the reviews are good, but I've been turned off by the price of basic bar food. My gf and I finally stopped in for dinner and we will never be going back. The food was inedible. We ate a few bites of each of our meals and then got the check. Recommended by the waiter, I got the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. Craving fried chicken, I was initially excited only to be let down by a sandwich that looked nothing like fried chicken. Non-crispy chicken thighs that were too peppery to enjoy. I love spicy food, this was over peppered for no reason. My girlfriend got the veggie burger as she was told it was made in house. For $16 we expected something with fresh vegetables. This place had solid tasting drinks. I enjoyed the Hibiscus Margarita. The food was a bit salty, but I was willing to overlook that because the drinks were so good. After being there for three hours and my table spending over $300, we were approached by staff and asked to lower our voices because other customers thought we were talking too loud. I didn't think we were too loud. We were incredibly offended by the entire experience. Not just being asked to quiet down, but being shushed by staff in front of the entire dining area. Too bad, as my friends and I spent a lot of money (as we tend to do in any establishment we dine in), tipped 20% and sadly will not not return. read more

Great vibe, and a great addition to the neighborhood. The service is always friendly, efficient, and fast, and the Basic Burger is out of this world (if you're into things like deliciousness and happiness). Also, update re: previous poster: they now have a full bar! I've noticed it can get a little quiet in Bar Basic sometimes, and you know how it is with restaurants/bars in Brooklyn. They come and they go. Sometimes it seems almost like luck or fate whether one survives and another doesn't. Not to get all existential or anything. But that's why, even though I don't usually do the whole Yelp review thing, I wanted to put in a good word for this joint. My boyfriend and I just finished having an early dinner here and we couldn't wait to write a review. We sat at the bar for dinner and Wayne the bartender is truly amazing. I work in the service industry and am always so excited to have service that goes a bit above the norm but Wayne really blew us away. He was attentive to detail and a pleasure to talk to and got our orders in quickly. For food we ordered two apps and a burger to share. The Mac and cheese jalapeño bites were first up for us and they were delicious and included a yummy dipping sauce. Next we had the mighty wings, which my boyfriend devoured so quickly I only snagged one, but the one that I had was very very good. Crunchy and crisp on the outside without being dry. We finished with the burger -- Wayne picked up on the fact that my boyfriend and I were sharing all the food and cut the burger in half for us without us even asking which I thought was so great. The burger was juicy and fresh and the fries were also pretty great. The chef had happened to pop his head out of the kitchen while we were leaving and we thanked him for his delicious food and he was so gracious and so sweet! (If you go, be sure to "buy a round" for the kitchen!). I found this place on yelp and I'm so happy we decided to travel to Brooklyn from queens for the fantastic food and amazing service! read more

Had lunch here on a nice Saturday and sat in the backyard (good space but needs to be tidied up and there's a creepy storage shed back there). Got the breakfast burger which was pretty tasteless and didn't seem like super high quality meat, despite being $16. Fries were good. My wife got the kale and eggs on toast which was also tasteless (and the waiter never came back so we couldn't ask for salt and pepper) and was also $16 even though the bread was probably Pepperidge farm and it was just kale eggs and mushrooms. Stopped by here for drinks last night at the suggestion of a friend. We noticed right away the ample indoor and outdoor seating, but opted for indoor because it was a bit chilly out. We chose to sit in the back next to this charming little green wall with neon writing (very Instagrammable). Cocktails started at about $12, but Bar Basic also has wine, cider, and lots of rotating beers on tap. I opted for an Old Fashioned to start, and my drink came back very quick. It was just a touch sweeter than I think is usual for an Old Fashioned, but it was really smooth and delicious just the same. I also appreciate when a restaurant has large ice cubes so my whiskey doesn't get watered down. For round 2, I opted for something totally different and ordered an Aperol Spritz. It was also just a shade on the sweet side but very tasty and gave me great Italian vibes. I think what I liked about this place is that the staff really struck a balance between being attentive and giving us space. They were super friendly and quick to take care of what we needed but they were never hovering. We'll definitely be back soon! read more

Fiance and I decided to try Bar Basic in Park Slope tonight. This place opened a while ago and we've been meaning to try it for a while. We got mac and cheese bites, hush puppies and the outrageous burger and shared everything. Half of the burger came home with us, the thing is huge but really not that good. The meat tasted off to me and my stomach hurt after. Fiance liked it so he'll take it for lunch tomorrow. Mac and cheese bites were alright and hush puppies were delicious. I've visited this place twice and both times have had the same experience. After seating ourselves, and the waiter provided us with menus, we were left hanging for almost 20 minutes before our waiter returned to take our drink order. We ordered drinks and food at the same time. It took another 20 minutes for 2 drinks to come out. Food arrived about 10 minutes after the drinks. I can deal with extremely slow service if the restaurant was busy, however there was only one other table with guests. Also the food was mediocre at best, food and drinks not worth the $$$. Have been here twice now, once for lunch and once for brunch. Both times the food, service and experience were top class. The wait staff are so friendly and really on top of their game. The food is delicious, possibly one of the best restaurant salads I've ever had. The decor reminds me of East Village circa 1991 in its adorable kitschiness. I loved it, my teen loved it. We've saw this place pop up in the neighborhood and finally gave it a try. The tater tots were good, came out hot, and were a nicely sized portion. We ordered the fried chicken and fried chicken sandwich and both were excellent. The fried chicken had a nice seasoning and was equally good with and without hot sauce. I walked in on a Wednesday around 2:30. The happy hour is at bar only but the server allowed me to do it at the bar because I needed the outlet. Thank you a lot for that. I ordered 3 margaritas on happy hour and I was pleased to find out it wasn't pre-batched with margarita mix. She made it in front of me with real lime juice. My avocado blt was ok. Needs some salt. This place is amazing! I absolutely love the interior and decor along with the food. It's a cute spot in Park Slope with a small outdoor patio in back and the doors in front open for some air. The cocktails are delicious! Margaritas and the Hibiscus Margs are my favorite! Mojitos and Cucumber Smash are other favs! I had the Basic Burger which was so juicy and good. I wanted to like Bar Basic because it fills a gap that this particular 10 block radius needs: a family-friendly pub with decent food. Unfortunately, every time I've come here, I've had a mediocre experience. The food is decidedly middle-of-the-road. Diner quality fare. That's not, in itself, a bad thing, but if you're going to charge gastropub prices, it's going to rankle. The last time I was there, I sat at the bar and had a few drinks and watched a game on their tv. When I closed out my tab, I noticed they'd charged me for food that a server seated next to me had eaten. I've worked in restaurants for many years; this is not the end of the world, but it's also not a mistake that's easily made unless you're either careless or trying to take advantage. Super cute place. We came in on a Saturday for a late lunch and were seated promptly. I highly recommend the fried chicken sandwich. They somehow managed to pound the thigh meat very flat and then fry it into thin pieces of deliciousness. The result is very juicy and very flavorful. The sandwich as a whole is very thick though, I had to take 2 pieces of chicken out and eat them separately. Very yummy so no complaints. Besides the batter and the frying technique they also used high quality chicken which really shows. I also liked the pickled red cabbage and slaw in the sandwich. I think there's fennel in the slaw which counts for extra points. Onion rings were tiny bit over fried but very crispy and quite good. Fries were a little on the dry side. The chicken sandwich fell to pieces when I picked it up, which would have been fine but the chicken wasn't good at all - kind of fatty/rubbery. My boyfriend had the burger and said it was fine.
